Mortal Kombat concept art interview

Ian Fisher writes: Awhile back ago we were graced with some incredible concert art for a Mortal Kombat reboot pitch that was made by Midway artist Vincent Proce. For some unfortunate reason Midway decided to pass on Vincent's pitch which is a great injustice as it was the type of reboot MK fans were waiting for.

Vincent was nice enough to take some time out of his schedule to discuss his MK concept art, Mortal Kombat and what it was like working at Midway.

Ian Fisher - If given the opportunity, would you be interested in using your concepts within a theatrical release of the MK franchise?

Vincent Proce - Yes absolutely! I would love to be involved at any capacity. The previous movies didn't do the license justice.

man MK needs a reboot more than any game series...period. I wonder though, would it be possible to use the old digitized style from the old ones, like they used real people as the characters. but have it look amazingly real and the animations more like videogame characters now. Instead of that choppy repeat animation over and over. if that was possible then have it 2d/3d like SF4, then we would have a winner. and screw the "real" fighting styles like the new ones. you can have real fighting styles and still have over the top fights with crazy specials and gory(and i mean GORY) finishing moves.

FragMnTagM5232d ago

That is exactly what I want from an MK game. If they make that, then I will be one of the first in line to get it.

Panthers5232d ago

They need to move away from the slow combo system and bring back the fast paced button mashing from the originals. I hated the new ones where you had to memorize combos. I just liked doing whatever I wanted and the fighting was still fast paced and fun.

i hope that Mortal Kombat 9 could make the franchise come back really strong . Mortal Kombat is my favourite fighting game and i can wait to play Mortal Kombat 9 which i hope is in 3d with highly polished realistic character models . Mortal Kombat games were known as being the only fighting with realistic looking character models and environment. while other fighting games are known for random people fighting in the streets, the Mortal Kombat universe has a story of why all the characters are fighting .

I think, the art directions/models have been pretty good overall but all the 3D ones have failed badly. The game has become too slow with the animations. The fatalities got corny.

I miss that "MK Ultimate(Arcade)/Trilogy(N64)& quot; look. I don't know but whatever magic they used, the characters used to look real, which was one of the many draws, back in the day. I remember seeing it and thought it was "real people" which somehow made the fatalities look more gruesome. It needs some "SF4" type revival.

Double Toasted5233d ago

When he mentioned the lines that were formed to play MK games, I got goosebumps from the thought. Those lines must have formed all across the country back then...great times.

FragMnTagM5232d ago

I spent many hours of my youth in arcades playing those MK games almost exclusively. I remember the long lines with some pretty tough competition. Man I wish they would bring that former glory back, the series really deserves it. MK2 was my favorite game back on my SEGA Genesis. I had it on Super Nintendo, but it was not as good as the SEGA version. If I recall correctly, the SNES version had very little or no blood at all and on the SEGA Genisis, you had to put in a code for the blood. Anyways, those were some good times back then and they really need to bring that back...

They really need to get rid of conquest mode and all the stupid BS they have put into the games recently. Please revive MK and make it how it should be made.

15 Hardest Final Bosses In Fighting Games

GB: "More than perhaps any other genre, fighting games offer the kind of mechanical depth that you can lose yourself in for years. Learning the ins and outs, learning and perfecting combos, and so many other things that make this one of the most competitive genres in gaming, even on a professional level now. But you don’t have to be playing against another human to be challenged in a fighting game. Throughout the years, this genre has thrown multiple final bosses at us that have got us all collectively pulling our hair out. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at fifteen such fights."

Isshin the sword Saint was the hardest boss I ever beat. And I've been playing games for 30 years

I went through the clickfest, it's shameful; more than usual that is, lower than gamingbolt standards, Congrats GB you've reached a new low.

Mortal Kombat Female Designs from 2011 - 2019

CG writes: Despite Ed Boon going on record suggesting he would have rather toned down the “mature” looks of the ladies in Mortal Kombat 9 (ignoring the extreme violence) how well do the designs stack up over the years? We take a look at select Mortal Kombat female characters and compare them from Mortal Kombat 9 in 2011 through to the latest Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019. It’s rather interesting to not only see the graphical differences, but also how the design changed from porn star looking fighters to more realistic characters.

Mortal Kombat was always over the top, with the violence and character design. It seems dumb to suddenly become a puritan regarding boobs, but then remain just as silly with the violence and fatalities.

AnubisG1833d ago

They claim it's because now it's more realistic🤣

TricksterArrow1833d ago (Edited 1833d ago )

Well, the game was never about the bewbs, unlike DOA, for example, so... Is this really an issue either way? Plus, the females looked transgender in M9. :S

Jaypi031833d ago

Imo the fatalities seem like "silly" and just more brutal and graphic than ever to the point where it's near cringe inducing in a good way.

Jaypi031833d ago (Edited 1833d ago )

Could it just be different artist and tech? I think with MK9 they had the characters looking over the top cartoony to downright ugly, due to the limitations of the 360 and PS3 at the time, then with X you could see they were moving to a more realistic design, and now with 11 it seems that goal of realistic design has been reached now that they've seem to have perfected the facial technology with Injustice 2.

I think the costume designs for the majority of the characters are pretty realistic within context, while still making them look unique and cool.

TricksterArrow1833d ago

Sonya had more abs and broader shoulders than the guys at my gym in MK9. It was really not that sexy.

NapalmSanctuary1833d ago

In MKX Kitana and Mileena looked really good. Probably the best they've ever looked, concerning their defaults. In MK11, Kitana and Skarlet look clownish. Jade looks ok but nowhere near as good as Kitana and Mileena from MKX. None of these look realistic in any sense of the word, though Kitana's MKX outfit got pretty close to somewhat realistic. I just want an option to make Kitana look cool again. She was my main in MKX but I can't stand the way she looks in this one.

paradigmfellow1833d ago

Disagree with you. 11 has the best looking Kitana I have ever seen.

gamer78041830d ago

they could still have realism and show some skin where it made sense. Looks like they just covered up all the women and not the men.

MrChow6661833d ago

The character designs of mk11 are the best in the series so far, the 2011 designs look ahemm...not very feminine to be honest
