IGN: Halo: Reach Trailer Analysis

IGN writes:

"We finally have some in-engine footage of Halo: Reach to pore through and speculate on. If you haven't yet seen the trailer, make sure you watch it right now -- this isn't the sort of thing any Halo fan wants to miss. I've watched it several times now, going through it frame by frame, to see what little goodies I could find that might be easily passed over on first glance. As it turns out, this trailer offers up a lot more information than you might initially think."

Uh IGN seems to think the one Spartan is returning to the team when it's far more clearly saying this is a new member of the team. How did they mess that one up?

Kevin ButIer5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

This is supposed to be after Halo 3 right?

The green one is Master Chief?

Wheres Master Chief?

Edit: Thanks "helping bubbles" for u, anyway... we are going to have a lot of "missing spartans" :)

Rev Jesse Custer5268d ago

It's my understanding that Halo Reach is a prequel set before the events of Halo 1,2,3 and Master chief will not be the principle protagonist.

Saaking5268d ago

Reach is a prequel to Halo Combat Evolved. It's probably gonna deal with the battle of reach depicted in the novel.

YungXclusive2K95268d ago

That trailer was full of CG, I honestly wish it was in engine but I'm 99.99% Sure that trailer was BS. I haven't seen 360 pull out anything looking nearly as good as that. Considering how microsoft complimented Killzone 2 on its graphics this CG trailer was basically a bad attempt to kill the graphical king

lowcarb5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

No this is before Halo part 1.

edit above yung: So once this game blows you away will you still be in denial? Have you even seen Alan Wake? 360 has a lot of juice left inside of it that MS seems to finally be trying to show off.

CWMR5268d ago

I guess you didn't know that it has already been confirmed to be a cinematic using the games's engine.

peowpeow5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

I believe it was in-game as they stated themselves that it is the opening scene of the game (or part of it), and Halo games never have cg cutscenes.

The graphics are great and I only hope they're the same during gameplay. The visor reflections look good too

Edit: Can anyone give me an idea of how many spartans there were during Fall of Reach

kaveti66165268d ago

Were we watching the same trailer? What the hell is it with people saying the trailer was CG? Come on. It didn't even look that good for people to say that.

Kevin ButIer5268d ago

It will receive a 10/10 on graphics department just as Halo 3 did with a cheap engine.

Its all about gameplay and hype

lowcarb5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

"1.9 - Who cares about how it looks?
It will receive a 10/10 on graphics department just as Halo 3 did with a cheap engine.

What was that? Sure it's about game play but really there's no need for low blows and hate towards the franchise. If you don't like or know anything about Halo then why in the heck are you here anyway?

NoBias5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

I wonder if Bungie will implement some sort of a cover system. That could be sweet if done right.

I hope the lens flares will remain during actual game play. That adds a great deal of style (KZ2 & Mass Effect both use them).

dalibor5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

A cover system might not work well with a Halo game but if it is done correctly than I'm pretty sure that Halo fans would like it(still depends though everyone dislikes something). The trailer looks great though, it seems like we all have something to look forward to 2010 as gamers. I know I'm amped up as a Ps3 owner as should the 360 camp.

SixZeroFour5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

@Rev Jesse Custer - i still feel like believing that it may be john, but not as MC because they still didnt want to show his face (which they only do to MC and they didnt call him by name so its not completely clear) also, that this game will feature battles on reach, but not the actual fall itself (all speculation however)

@YungXclusive2K9 - of course you know all this, you have inside sources that tell you right

@peowpeow - i believe that during the battle of reach, there were 30 but split into 2 groups, 27 down to reach and 3 (john, fred and kelly i believe) away from it

@kaveti6616, Kevin ButIer and the rest of the haters - what do you get out of bashing a title? honestly wondering

@NoBias - you know, i would love to see a game have a cover system taht stays in first person...where if you get close enough to the edge of the cover, you actually peak around or above the covering object to shoot and then move in the opposite direction to remain covered again

if anyone knows a current game that does that, i would love to hear it cause id like t try it out, as far as i know, once you go to cover, it goes to third person view

EDIT: answered question from my thoughts before reading the actual article

if you watch a high def version like the one on b.net, you would notice that the skull isnt actually painted on, but scratched out...it was one of the first things that actually caught my attention when watching the trailer...his helmet is badass

everything else, seems spot on

barom5268d ago

I thought it looked a bit too Gears'ish. That said it looked good but not really mindblowing as some hyped it up to be. If it sports the 4-player online/offline splitscreen, that would be extremely impressive. If not then it's not really that great.

NecrumSlavery5268d ago

So is this going to be like Full Spectrum Warrior or C&C Renagade?

How is the commanding of your platoon work? Or even sweeter, can we get 6-8 player campaign modes online? where you actually get a full team. So we can roll out with out anyone getting stuck with an idiot NPC who can't drive.

Montrealien5268d ago

New halo reach info comes out and on N4G all we see in the comments sections are people complaining and hating on Halo, while the people that seem interested in the game gets bombarded with dissagrees.

Gj job people, your hate for this franchise is infact helping this Hype you all speak of, the game is already in the hot list on n4g and its a year away...oh the irony.

StanLee5268d ago

A lot of hate in here. Let me say this, Microsoft has nothing to gain and everything to lose if the trailer misrepresents the leaps the Halo franchise is taking because if the final game doesn't live up to the expectations of the trailer, the backlash would be epic. I think the trailer is in-engine, I think the game will be fantastic and I think it will be the biggest game of 2010.

lowcarb5267d ago (Edited 5267d ago )

1.20 - bandit
"You've seen (one) touched up cutscene and you're suddenly crying from the rooftops that the 360 is the most powerful? Get over yourself."

So did you bother telling this to PS3 fanboys that made the same claims with MGS4, Lair, Heavenly Sword, UC, UC2, KZ2, and now Heavy Rain? Don't attack us for showing a bit of excitement kind of like whats gone on this entire generation with every game released for PS3. We already know HAlO REACH should look better due to time so no need to repeat that. I just don't see the point of getting bothered in a Halo thread with it's fans. If we brought it up in a PS3 thread sure but other than that take it to the open zone.

pixelsword5267d ago (Edited 5267d ago )

...a great trailer for things to come; if and when Bungie decides to reveal gameplay, they will.

Until then, all I have to say is it is an awesome trailer and I can't wait until the game comes out!

Traveler5267d ago

For those saying it is CG, well I guess that is a high compliment to the graphics, but it has been in fact confirmed to be an actual in-engine cinematic. It looks fantastic. 2010 is honestly shaping up to be one of the greatest ever.

Dutch Boogie5268d ago

Hmm since the release of the video i have done my own dissecting and although it could use more work, so far it is looking good. I suppose it's good news to 360 fans and Halo fans. 2010 looks like a good year for both systems. I might get a 360 Arcade for copied games. Alan Wake is the only game i'll probably buy on the 360 next year.

kaveti66165268d ago

Thanks for letting us know of your plans. We were dying to know.

Dutch Boogie5268d ago

Truth hurts i know right? Yeah we really wanted to know what you thought of my opinion lol.

avengers19785268d ago

The real truth is this game did not look that great it could have easily been halo 3 or ODST. It basically is ODST but with spartan squads instead of shock troops. It might be a new engine but it's the same old hardware, and it shows since new games look basically the same as old games on the 360. PS3 games on the other hand just keep getting better and better as more people learn how to unlock it's full potential

Ps_alm3k5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

It's Cg ...........................

Nikuma5268d ago

That is some bad CG then. Insecure much?

Bnet3435268d ago

lol that's not good enough to be CG. If you think this is CG that just goes to show that the graphics were that good.

Saaking5267d ago

Isn't it kinda like an ingame cutscene? IF it was CG it would look leaps and bounds better. Anyways, compare the Reach trailer to ODST's Cutscenes and you'll see the huge leap.

r0s3b0wl235268d ago

Analysis: Major piece of crap that's going to sell millions anyway because gamers are retards that can be bought off with marketing just like the idiots who like Britney Spears and other nonsense.

RIP Gaming Industry

avengers19785268d ago

The gaming industry is not dead, the 360 might be but the PS3 is gaining more and more momentum, and has tons of great exclusive games out now and the near future of 2010 is full of great PS3 games.

KilZoneGeneralStrife5268d ago

Thing is...if that was ingame.. What type of AA are they using?I see no jaggies at all

peowpeow5268d ago

I am pretty sure they said this scene IS the actual intro of the game

jdktech20105268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

people are slow to understand so I'll repeat it for you

The scene was actually in game using the engine that will be used for Halo Reach and according to Bungie, was part of the opening sequence for Halo Reach....btw, go back (doubt you've ever played the games anyway) and find one cg cutscene in any Halo game made by Bungie......I'll wait forever because it isn't there.....

People apparently don't understand the english language anymore....maybe video gaming is bad for you

lowcarb5268d ago

"What type of AA are they using?"

Well they obviously touched it up a little for the unveiling. Also I think Bungie and MS are out to end the PS3 more powerful myth.

Zishyfish5268d ago

With the Halo 3 video, they stated the graphics in the trailer was a target of what they wanted it to be like, whereas this video contains the actual running graphics they are using for one of their cutscenes. But I can understand not wanting to be bought in until actual game footage is shown, its only logical.

ASSASSYN 36o5268d ago (Edited 5268d ago )

This is pic example of the type of AA bungie may be using.

TheBand1t5268d ago

I imagine it's like what they did with Uncharted 2 - Which is use in-game assets but boost AA during cutscenes.

Myze5268d ago

@3.6

Yep, it's in-engine assets, like most games that do non-cg cutscenes (usually not all cutscenes, but think of the ones in UC2 or MGS4), but it's not running realtime. They use the game's engine to create the scene, but it's rendered on a computer with massive AA and higher poly/res models, etc. The thing is, it tells us next to nothing about what the game will actually look like, one way or the other, since pre-rendered in-engine shots can be made to look well beyond what is capable during actual game processing. That being said, even if this is 100% what the game will look like, it still won't surpass some of the games already released this generation, yet it will be the best looking 360 game and does look nice.

siyrobbo5268d ago

its like killzone 2 all over again, nobody believed the game would be as good as the first trailer, but guerilla proved everybody wrong

We'll just have to wait and see

spinbot_lv15268d ago

agree.you've explained perfectly the differences between in-engine assets and real-time graphics in game .the trailer it's not running in real time.

dabri55268d ago

look at a higher def video. Also look at the objects in the background. You can see them a little bit. I watched the hd version of the trailer on my 52" tv last night. I could see them.

Perkel5268d ago

@ siyrobbo

the diffrence is that K2 render looked just OMG and they delivered it with some flaws but 90% of this omg render was delivered. And it wasn't just art style but tech and power with no tricks.

In halo trailer they only showed few objects with SSAA (AA is touched up people, go beyond3d for more info) and still quality of graphic (tech and art style) isn't OMG as people expected from new engine.

It may be only this scene but for first trailer from new engine they should show some improvements over H3.

B3D forum noticed only improved lightning and better models (more polygons) and ofc this superior AA which is probably BS (read in-engine assets render not gameplay).

Also thing is lightning was good in H3 so lighting in reach isn't much upgraded (still looks v good).

Better poly models is big plus.

Hope they show new trailer with some serious fireworks for 10mln game..

dabri55267d ago

No, he didn't get it right. The video is running real time using higher quality lighting/shadows/AA/char models being generated in real time using the in game engine. It's able to look better than whats running durring game play because the system does not have to contend with extra information like AI/control input. This is a common technique used in many games. A good example of this is in gears of war or Mass effect 2 when you see the higher detailed models/textures load in during a cut scene. The way he describes it is a computer records the video before hand and this pre rended video is saved via a media file and played via a specific trigger point in the game. What I am saying, this video is just a bunch of scripted movements and camera angle changes saved and run / processed in real time durring with the in game engine. The difference is big. One, all the work is being done off the console. Two the work is being done on the console.

How'd fallout not make the list. Atleast over cyberpunk, tales , and halo. Fallout been around since what 96 98 and has 5 6 games into it. It's full of lore when you play it. I'd even add star ocean to a point.

robtion502d ago

Agree Fallout should be on there.

MadLad502d ago

And somehow Planescape Torment doesn't even make the list.

Crows90502d ago

Hollow knight surpasses these.

shinoff2183502d ago

In lore? I must be missing something

Crows90502d ago (Edited 502d ago )

Yes in lore. Easily missed... absolutely. Never played a game that had me loving the world and lore behind it as much as that one. Most of course wouldn't be able to experience it since it is a more difficult game.

DarXyde502d ago

I can't speak for all titles on this list, but by the time you get to Dark Souls III, the lore is a bloody tapestry of intricacy

Crows90501d ago

Played them all. Im not saying the games on the list dont have good lore...I just think hollow knight had more lore that is hidden but present and more easily explored and accessed. The souls games have tremendous lore but theyre mostly hidden and stay that way unless you look for it and research it. The lore is not very accessible.

DarXyde501d ago

Crows90,

I think that's a somewhat fair assessment. For me, the Souls games are less upfront about the lore, but it does invite your fascination through NPCs, items, locations, bosses, etc. There's this kind of natural progression where the picture becomes just clear enough by doing the essential tasks, but it really makes you want to explore every inch of the world.

TheColbertinator502d ago

Suikoden and Legend of Heroes also have massive lore setups.

agent13502d ago

narration is more important than lore i'd rather watch the story and characters in a more cinematic way instead of searching for notes and stuff that's why i love sony exclusive games like uncharted and gow and hate from software games

shinoff2183501d ago

The article was top ten lore in video games. I think they did a bad job picking games out. I know what you mean though. I just like a variety of games and genres.

Awesome news - so can we look forward to playing Halo: Infinite with no online issues circa 2033?

just_looken587d ago

"You can download the improved Reach AI mod at Mod DB" This was a mod 343 did nothing so the online will be fixed in our dreams.

SullysCigar587d ago

Par for the course with 343.

Profchaos586d ago

They did say they had a 10 year plan for infinite we just all assumed it would be DLC could of been a 10 year netcode rollout.

But seriously this is a mod the community won't be able to modify infinite in the same way

Cikatriz_ESP587d ago

Combat Evolved was the best campaign, and it's not even close.

just_looken587d ago

You should have tried this version of reach when it first came out remastered for a year there was no sound because 343 could not locate the sound files.

It was a special challenge.

badz149587d ago

more like the bunch at 343i are simply mentally challenged

ACEMANWISE587d ago

Well I guess 12 years is faster than most fixes. I guess this is a cheap way to "remaster" something nowadays.....by just fixing something that used to always be broken.

zidane1341587d ago

Did you even read the article? This is a mod to improve AI from back almost 2 gens ago. Nobody is claiming this is remastering anything. Yeesh.

Crows90587d ago

Halo is dead. Microsoft has other shooter franchises it cares more about now. 343 are no longer Xbox golden studio. They are likely to shift things around or even close it all together and give the IP to someone else.

343i decided to pummel the IP into the ground...and when they see it didn't quite look like Glenn's face they decided to just keep on pummeling. Not sure if Glenn is the IP or the fanbase in this case though.

Profchaos586d ago

343 were never the golden studio they were a hastily thrown together b team when bungie said we want to do something else cya

Crows90586d ago

Well ...I didn't want to say it but I agree. Makes you wonder why Microsoft gave them the IP and didn't keep Bungie or any of the talent they acquired from any studio.

CobraKai586d ago

“ Halo Infinite, Halo 3, or Halo: Combat Evolved. It’s hard to say which of the sci-fi FPS games offers the best experience all round.”
