Dennis: "Xbox Live is the Better Online Gaming Service"

The huge success of Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360 was largely due to Xbox Live. Many users prefer to play it on Xbox Live than on PlayStation Network, at least, according to Microsoft's David Dennis.

Fishy Fingers5248d ago

And because it's the truth. But I still believe the PSN offers the best deal, obviously, being free.

kaveti66165248d ago

1. The install base is probably not as large as 8 million as of now.

2. "Consumers have shown that if you can deliver value, they're willing to pay for a subscription service, beyond just what multiplayer brings with an Xbox Live Gold subscription." - Um, Microsoft hasn't actually proven that people will continue to pay for XBL Gold just for the extra features. The reality is that people HAVE to pay just to play online. I wonder, if playing online was free on XBL, how many people would fork over the monthly fees for the extra bells and whistles. Since Microsoft doesn't allow its users to play online for free (for the most part), we cannot truly know if gamers would continue to pay for XBL GOLD if they didn't need to.

3. "The subscription fee allows Microsoft to create a better, more robust service with more features." I have both consoles and from my experience, XBL feels like it has substance whereas PS3 isn't connected well, or as I should say, isn't cohesive. This is probably because of all of the online features being separated into different places on the XMB. Other than, I don't really think PSN is as bare-bones as people would say. It has its own store, it has a place to get all the latest demos (though not organized in the same way as XBL), and those are pretty much the main features in XBL.

XBL also sports videos that discuss new games or features or strategy guides and stuff like that. I never really bother watching those but I assume others do and they must love them. XBL has netflix but so does PS3 now, if I'm not mistaken.

XBL has cross-game party chat which I love. PSN doesn't have that. XBL feels louder and more vibrant because of the choice of colors, the avatars, and the fact that most people online are gonna have mics. PSN seems a bit less colorful, but that's really a change in preference rather than a gripe. A lot of people on this site say it's a good thing that fewer PS3 owners have mics because they like the quiet atmosphere. I personally don't like it because it takes away from the cohesiveness of the experience.

I also have no problems on XBL with people cursing and being racist or homophobic because 1. I understand that most of the time, taunts are a nature of gameplay. If someone calls me a "f@g" I don't take it personally because he doesn't even know who I am. Plus I'm nineteen and I'm not easily offended. 2. I usually get into a party chat with my friends so I hardly every hear anyone else anyway. 3. I use the mute button if I ever want to.

Both XBL and PSN provide the same service but one has a few more bells and whistles that are not necessary for online gameplay. People will then argue which service provides lagless gameplay the most, and I don't really know the answer to that. All I can say is that from personal experience, I have experienced lag plenty of times while playing Halo 3. Whenever I play on XBL I have to turn off my laptop or make sure my AIM is off. When playing Uncharted 2 online, I never experienced any lag and my laptop was on and so was AIM. So in this case PSN won, but I'm not gonna make that judgment overall because different people have had different experiences.

Megaton5248d ago (Edited 5248d ago )

If online gaming wasn't part of the XBL Gold package, I doubt many people would be paying their yearly sucker tax. It's a shame that they thrive while charging for things that should be free, but their fans would rather defend the fee than demand Microsoft get rid of it. They're the only non-MMO entity that charges pay-to-play fees, and it's just amazing to me that they've suckered so many people into forking over the cash, no matter the price.

To me, the only things that matter are online gaming, and Netflix to a much smaller degree, since I am a subscriber who loves their streaming service, and both of those things are free on the PSN. After 2 years of using the PS3 on a daily basis, I could count the instances of laggy online gaming on one hand, so the idea that it's a can-and-string operation over on the PSN is absurd.

Of course I do appreciate the whole "one cohesive unit" feeling that XBL has, and it's something that the PSN is most definitely missing. It's just not a $50/year difference.

Dandiego5248d ago

I have both and I have problems when playing online with my PS3 (lag) online Xbox wins... the games is another debate but online its not even close

SilentNegotiator5248d ago

DarkTower8055248d ago

but it's not. Gears much? The difference is that Live lets you get away with having a crappier internet connection, PSN isn't as unforgiving. But trust me, if you have a good internet connection PSN is lag-free. It's the cheapskates that think PSN is full of lag with their dial-up.

sugard05248d ago (Edited 5248d ago )

Just because MW2 sold more on one platform, doesnt mean that platform has a better online experience.

"The huge success of Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360 was largely due to Xbox Live. Many users prefer to play it on Xbox Live than on PlayStation Network, at least, according to Microsoft's David Dennis."

Is that really the reason? Or is it because Microsoft had an exclusive advertising campaign with MW2, or the fact that the 360 has timed DLC, or the fact that there is just over twice as many 360's than PS3's in North America.

Did these guys do Science at school? You used to have to make sure your experiment was a fair test.... but noooooo these guys just continue to talk out of their ass.

Oh and BTW.... NA does NOT equal the whole world.

-Alpha5248d ago

Exactly.

It's undeniable that LIVE offers an amazing service... for a fee.

PSN being free is the better deal, but as an overall package, if you don't mind parting with around $50 a year for LIVE, LIVE is the better service.

Now that PSN is going to offer a Premium service though, I think it would be fair to compare PSN Service to LIVE Service, but I want to see what Sony includes in the PSN Premium.

It would be amazing if you could rent movies and stuff under the PSN Premium service instead of just being able to have services like Netflix where you have to pay separately for movies and stuff.

With that said, keeping PSN free even when the Premium service is coming is a great way for Sony to compete against LIVE.

LazyDevs5248d ago

Tell me since when can you get onto PSN with dial-up from your PS3? I very rarely have lag issues on live but my god almost every game i play on the PS3 plays like crap. MGS, Socom, LBP, Killzone so on and so forth. The only 2 games i have played that plays well online is Resistance 2 and Uncharted 2. I have played Multi platform games on both and Live is a far better experience. Everyone knows it, that's the difference between paying 30-40 bucks a year VS Free.

Anon19745248d ago

Oh right! The cross game chat, so you can annoy your friends when they're not even playing the same game you are.

Funny, I use these services to play games online. One does it free. One charges. Other than that I tried both for a couple of years and don't see what's so great about XBL versus the PSN. I certainly don't miss being a gold subscriber.

MAYTR1X5248d ago

And also considering PS3 HAS different variety of games, instead of this 1 BS GL!TCHMANIA BOT OF DUTY 2.

Why do u think it got its exclusive console cause its INEVITABLE to have a GLITCH/malfunction game without is girlfriend.. getting BLOODY RED RING OF DEATH so yeah ..its INEVITABLE they were meant for each other ..

PS3 owner's were playing Rachet, UC2, Demon Souls, BFBC2 beta, MAG beta, GOW3 demo, GOD of WAR 1 & 2, ...now Dante's Inferno Demo & soon GT5 demo..

So as u can see we don't rely on 1 game to ENTERTAIN us WE HAVE VARIETIES..screw it am a go watch some BLU-RAY..hahahahha

tordavis5248d ago (Edited 5248d ago )

I'm tired of people complaining about the cost of XBL. I'm a sucker? I don't think so. A sucker pays extra for something that they aren't getting. They get fooled out of their money.

While I think paying JUST to play online is stupid, I understand that it's just the cost of entertainment. No different than having to pay $4.50 a month just to have HBO. It's the cost of entertainment. I chose to buy and Xbox 360 and I want to play online. So I pay the price.

How many people here pay for text messaging when email is free? How many people buy bottle water? How many people pay for death (cigarettes)? I work and earn my money and I'll spend it how I like. Don't tell me I'm a sucker for doing that.

If I didn't need Live to play online, I wouldn't be paying the $39 year...at least up until I decided to check out Netflix which I am now addicted to.

Oh one last thing if you like to nitpick. The information you get from Qore cost money, but it's free on Xbox Live.

@sugard0 - North America is the world I live in.

NecrumSlavery5248d ago

The majority reason people pay for LIVE, isn't it's supposed great value. It's the fact is that if you don't pay, you don't play. It's called monopolization...a popular tactic Microsoft likes to use.

PopEmUp5248d ago

Well if it wasn't, why the f would you pay for it lol either way Psn still offer a better service in regard as it "Free" :D

"Having an install base around 8 million more than the PS3 certainly helps, but the main factor is Xbox Live," said Dennis of the Xbox 360.

hmmm with an official failure rate of 54% and 1 million xb360 banned when cod mw2 was released i really wonder if the lead is 8 million. smoke and mirror is microsoft way.

kewlkat0075247d ago

Though I'm with Fishy Fingers on this point ". But I still believe the PSN offers the best deal, obviously, being free."

I know people that don't want to pay for XBL which is fine. This is still a business, in it to make money. Not everyone can afford a every service.

XBL is better all around, though they both can perform the same basic function for why they do exist.

"While I think paying JUST to play online is stupid, I understand that it's just the cost of entertainment. No different than having to pay $4.50 a month just to have HBO. It's the cost of entertainment. I chose to buy and Xbox 360 and I want to play online. So I pay the price."

Because you have no choice. And what does HBO have to do with anything? Your analogy fails. Wii doesn't charge for it, PS3 doesn't, and your beloved PC doesn't have an online entry fee. So why does 360? Because you have no choice. Whether you want party chat or not, if you want to use multiplayer, a feature you pay for when you buy the game, you have to kick that 50per up to MS.

"How many people here pay for text messaging when email is free? How many people buy bottle water? How many people pay for death (cigarettes)? I work and earn my money and I'll spend it how I like. Don't tell me I'm a sucker for doing that."

Again, your comparing apples to oranges. The connection between cellphone fees, HBO and bottled water to the conversation is tenuous at best. Yes, you can spend your money how you like. No one says you can't. And if you feel like you're not a sucker then fine. But that doesn't mean gamers that have been playing online games for almost 10 years or more can't object to a mandatory fee just to get online.

"If I didn't need Live to play online, I wouldn't be paying the $39 year...at least up until I decided to check out Netflix which I am now addicted to."

Loving Netflix on PS3. No additional fee either. I get on, pay Netflix, and I'm in. And I believe you're telling the truth when you say if you didn't need it JUST to get online you wouldn't pay. That's what everyones problem is with the Live mandatory fee.

"Oh one last thing if you like to nitpick. The information you get from Qore cost money, but it's free on Xbox Live."

Stop right there. Again your analogies make sense to you and only you. No one says you HAVE to get that information from Quore. The whole point, again, is that you HAVE to pay to get online on 360. Shoes in Home, Vidoes on PSN, or info from Quore are ancilliary features. I buy Modern Warfare 2, I play on PSN, and I don't pay anything extra. No mandatory fee barrier that prevents me from gaming online.

Hahaha, there isn't even any cross game party chat anymore. How is that better then the psn again? BTW, I just downloaded Dante's Inferno on the psn last night, and guess what, its nowhere on xbox live. Nothing against my 360, but I swear Im never gonna buy another multiplat for it as soon as the ps3 gets X game chat. I dont see the logic in paying for a service when I can get it free else where. Of course, that is until Microsoft actually comes up with that must have multiplayer title. IM still waiting on that.

kaveti66165248d ago (Edited 5248d ago )

There is actually cross-game party chat. Microsoft has allowed developers to forgo having that feature in their games if it doesn't comply with their vision of how they want their games to be played.

WildArmed5247d ago

MS just gave devs the feature to disable it.. that means its still availiable for 99% of the titles. Mw2 chose to disable it, but i heard that they are rethinking it over.

MY PS3 broken network station 3 its pathetic, although I was in denial due to my characteristic of loyalty towards the dismissal console, I for once can said the ps3 its the gayest of them all. Nothing but headache with this worthless blu-ray player and I most said that I have never been raped this way in such a state that I have nightmares with the pos3. Oh fallacy and divinity does not fit together, and yet how is it possible to relinquish agony from such a broken station 3, there most be a way to redeemed one soul and I only see the possibility to come out clean and tell it like it is. Therefore here its the truth that has hunted me for the past 3 years:

1) 360 you are the GOD of gaming
2) PS3 does everything but backwards compatibility lol...
3) wiitarded its for kidies
4) No one has ever created a more advanced console than 360
5) Ps3 its the most un-reliable console
6) Ps3 its good for grilling quoted from george foreman
7) Pink its the ps3 fandroids color fact. pink console-dildo control

For my conclusion, I will summarized the statement above in 3 words for dumb fandroids: PS3 its garbage.

Truthfully yours: Sausage Slinguing ur face.

PSN is free, but is bare bones in what you get. Xbox Live is the much better of the two.

Perjoss5248d ago

PSN should catch up in time, or who knows maybe it wont, thats up to Sony. Until then I'm happy to pay for something that is worth it, as long as it stays cheap.

regardless of wether live is better or not, microsoft makes a lot of money from live subs, this money helps them afford stuff like exclusive dlc for popular titles, this makes the console stronger and in the end is good for the fans, we all win.

nycredude5248d ago

Kev

Care to elaborate on how PSn is bare bones?

Last I check it had a huge video store, tons of games (online and full retail), online play for all games, dedicated server, netflix, demos, internet browser, ticker, and HOME which has become huge and getting bigger. Game launch from home and tons of small minigames. Not to mention if you have an eye then vid chat is there too. ALL this for free!

Care to elaborate again how PSn is barebones?

I really don't understand people who think like this. I have both consoles but NEVER play on live cause it sucks to HAVE to pay for what I can get for free just buy turning on the other console.

talltony5248d ago

I hate when people say live is much better than psn. Live is extremely overrated at this point in time for a few reasons. Psn updates are allowing more features to be implemented in games. Just look at mw2, you can send game invites, join friends in progress, and play from match to match in parties. What else do you need really? Party up and send game invites in uncharted 2. You can easily party up with your friends and play clan matches in killzone 2. In Lbp you can play with your friends easily as well. Street fighter4, resistance 2 and so on. It's only getting better.

So you see psn just depends on the games creator to implement same features that live has automatically. Still not worth paying for if u ask me especially since psn supports the biggest games with the biggest dedicated servers while live specializes in p2p for pretty much all it's games.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos2h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto2h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger881h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).
