The reality is that people HAVE to pay just to play online. I wonder, if playing online was free on XBL, how many people would fork over the monthly fees for the extra bells and whistles. Since Microsoft doesn't allow its users to play online for free (for the most part), we cannot truly know if gamers would continue to pay for XBL GOLD if they didn't need to.

3. "The subscription fee allows Microsoft to create a better, more robust service with more features." I have both consoles and from my experience, XBL feels like it has substance whereas PS3 isn't connected well, or as I should say, isn't cohesive. This is probably because of all of the online features being separated into different places on the XMB. Other than, I don't really think PSN is as bare-bones as people would say. It has its own store, it has a place to get all the latest demos (though not organized in the same way as XBL), and those are pretty much the main features in XBL.

XBL also sports videos that discuss new games or features or strategy guides and stuff like that. I never really bother watching those but I assume others do and they must love them. XBL has netflix but so does PS3 now, if I'm not mistaken.

XBL has cross-game party chat which I love. PSN doesn't have that. XBL feels louder and more vibrant because of the choice of colors, the avatars, and the fact that most people online are gonna have mics. PSN seems a bit less colorful, but that's really a change in preference rather than a gripe. A lot of people on this site say it's a good thing that fewer PS3 owners have mics because they like the quiet atmosphere. I personally don't like it because it takes away from the cohesiveness of the experience.

I also have no problems on XBL with people cursing and being racist or homophobic because 1. I understand that most of the time, taunts are a nature of gameplay. If someone calls me a "f@g" I don't take it personally because he doesn't even know who I am. Plus I'm nineteen and I'm not easily offended. 2. I usually get into a party chat with my friends so I hardly every hear anyone else anyway. 3. I use the mute button if I ever want to.

Both XBL and PSN provide the same service but one has a few more bells and whistles that are not necessary for online gameplay. People will then argue which service provides lagless gameplay the most, and I don't really know the answer to that. All I can say is that from personal experience, I have experienced lag plenty of times while playing Halo 3. Whenever I play on XBL I have to turn off my laptop or make sure my AIM is off. When playing Uncharted 2 online, I never experienced any lag and my laptop was on and so was AIM. So in this case PSN won, but I'm not gonna make that judgment overall because different people have had different experiences.

If online gaming wasn't part of the XBL Gold package, I doubt many people would be paying their yearly sucker tax. It's a shame that they thrive while charging for things that should be free, but their fans would rather defend the fee than demand Microsoft get rid of it. They're the only non-MMO entity that charges pay-to-play fees, and it's just amazing to me that they've suckered so many people into forking over the cash, no matter the price.

To me, the only things that matter are online gaming, and Netflix to a much smaller degree, since I am a subscriber who loves their streaming service, and both of those things are free on the PSN. After 2 years of using the PS3 on a daily basis, I could count the instances of laggy online gaming on one hand, so the idea that it's a can-and-string operation over on the PSN is absurd.

Of course I do appreciate the whole "one cohesive unit" feeling that XBL has, and it's something that the PSN is most definitely missing. It's just not a $50/year difference.

Is that really the reason? Or is it because Microsoft had an exclusive advertising campaign with MW2, or the fact that the 360 has timed DLC, or the fact that there is just over twice as many 360's than PS3's in North America.

It's undeniable that LIVE offers an amazing service... for a fee.

PSN being free is the better deal, but as an overall package, if you don't mind parting with around $50 a year for LIVE, LIVE is the better service.

Now that PSN is going to offer a Premium service though, I think it would be fair to compare PSN Service to LIVE Service, but I want to see what Sony includes in the PSN Premium.

It would be amazing if you could rent movies and stuff under the PSN Premium service instead of just being able to have services like Netflix where you have to pay separately for movies and stuff.

With that said, keeping PSN free even when the Premium service is coming is a great way for Sony to compete against LIVE.

Tell me since when can you get onto PSN with dial-up from your PS3? I very rarely have lag issues on live but my god almost every game i play on the PS3 plays like crap. MGS, Socom, LBP, Killzone so on and so forth. The only 2 games i have played that plays well online is Resistance 2 and Uncharted 2. I have played Multi platform games on both and Live is a far better experience. Everyone knows it, that's the difference between paying 30-40 bucks a year VS Free.

Because you have no choice. And what does HBO have to do with anything? Your analogy fails. Wii doesn't charge for it, PS3 doesn't, and your beloved PC doesn't have an online entry fee. Again, your comparing apples to oranges. The connection between cellphone fees, HBO and bottled water to the conversation is tenuous at best. Yes, you can spend your money how you like. No one says you can't. And if you feel like you're not a sucker then fine. But that doesn't mean gamers that have been playing online games for almost 10 years or more can't object to a mandatory fee just to get online.

Loving Netflix on PS3. No additional fee either. I get on, pay Netflix, and I'm in. And I believe you're telling the truth when you say if you didn't need it JUST to get online you wouldn't pay. That's what everyones problem is with the Live mandatory fee.

Stop right there. Again your analogies make sense to you and only you. No one says you HAVE to get that information from Quore. The whole point, again, is that you HAVE to pay to get online on 360. Shoes in Home, Vidoes on PSN, or info from Quore are ancilliary features. I buy Modern Warfare 2, I play on PSN, and I don't pay anything extra. No mandatory fee barrier that prevents me from gaming online.

BTW, I just downloaded Dante's Inferno on the psn last night, and guess what, its nowhere on xbox live. Last I check it had a huge video store, tons of games (online and full retail), online play for all games, dedicated server, netflix, demos, internet browser, ticker, and HOME which has become huge and getting bigger. Game launch from home and tons of small minigames. Not to mention if you have an eye then vid chat is there too. ALL this for free!

I hate when people say live is much better than psn. Live is extremely overrated at this point in time for a few reasons. Psn updates are allowing more features to be implemented in games. Just look at mw2, you can send game invites, join friends in progress, and play from match to match in parties. What else do you need really? Party up and send game invites in uncharted 2. You can easily party up with your friends and play clan matches in killzone 2. In Lbp you can play with your friends easily as well. Street fighter4, resistance 2 and so on. It's only getting better.

So you see psn just depends on the games creator to implement same features that live has automatically. Still not worth paying for if u ask me especially since psn supports the biggest games with the biggest dedicated servers while live specializes in p2p for pretty much all it's games.

LOL @nycredude; you don't HAVE to do anything; paying for xbl is an option nothing more nothing less. When I paid for xbl I paid because I wanted to, when I felt like PSN satisfied my needs I stopped paying for xbl and the ps3 became my primary console. No one made me do anything and every other consumer has the same options I did, but the fact remains when comparing psn and xbl. Not the games, not the exclusives just the services. As it stands today in my opinion and many others the ONLY advantage psn has over xbl is the fact that it's free while xbl has many features i.e advantages that psn is lacking. Once again you need to experience both platforms extensively not just at a friends house for a few hours at a time.
Edit - noticed in one of your other post you state you have a 360. I'm sure one of the games you have for the 360 has a xbl trial card for you to try out the service. You also get a 30 day free trial when you initially sign up for the service. I find it hard to believe someone has a 360 and has yet to even check out the free trial unless you have a hackbox 360 instead.

I think what really burns all of you PS3 fanboys is that year after year you claim, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 is the year of the PS3 and yet time after time, even after several price cuts, your precious console still falls short. Being I have both systems and have gamed since the days of pong and Colecovision I think I have been around the block quite a few times. I find myself buying only PS3 exclusives simply because of live's ease of connectivity. I have tried socom and warhawk with friends before and it just always seems a hassle. The voice quality on PS3 is another subject altogether but when you reach the age of 34, sit at a computer everyday and want a simple telephone like experience the Xbox wins. I rarely ever comment on here and really expect some type of negative response but I had to be truthful. Also I am hangover360 on PSN and have a 60 GB BC PS3 so I have had experience with the system.

PS. what is four dollars a month when you work everyday.

It's debatable who's got the better online service, MS's online is more integrated into the experience, and has a more cohesive system for viewing what your friends do. Sony has Home, MS has avatars - you can't really argue avatars are better without looking like a fool (one offers a massive world to run around in full of mini games and allows you to furnish virtual apartments, the other is there for dress-up/extra revenue.)

The sad thing is what Microsoft tells you - you get what you pay for, when in reality their service is the result of having better software and forcing devs to follow their protocol, it has nothing to do with their servers being better or whatever you want to believe. You're paying for the right to use your console, Microsoft makes far a away more off subscriptions than what it actually costs to run xboxlive.

The one thing that cannot be opinionated is price, and one costs $50 a year(40 if you hunt for deals online), and the other is absolutely free.

i will say that Dennis works for MS, and it is his job to promote his company's services.

xbox live does its job well, and plenty of people who are not stupid mindless slaves pay their hard earned money for the service. Even someone like me who has both consoles and could be gaming online for free with the ps3, but still finds value in xbox live.

let me put it this way, if both services were pay services I would choose live over psn. even though psn is free I still use live more often to play online games. I use PSN to play Killzone 2, uncharted 2, and LBP and it works fine. I just prefer xbox live, the main reason being most of my friends game on the 360, and I enjoy gaming with them.

although i agree xbox live has better social features i just get annoyed at the amount of lag i get compared to what i get on psn. All the big games except cod on ps3 experience like no lag at all but on the 360 i get laggy matches every few rounds in games. anyone who has played halo3 online or gears 2 knows what im talking about. i know it would be stupid for microsoft to make dedicated servers for every game but they need to find a way to reduce lag even if it means filtering out people with bad connections so they play together

When it comes to the laggy games I always say blame your ISP. I have not experienced lag that is worth mentioning since I switched to cable from DSL years ago. I know it does exist and can think of a handful of times I have received it but to go long distances of time without seeing a hiccup on my connection is not weird. Also as a suggestion My XBOX performs much better when I put it in the DMZ of my router you may want to try that. It not only speeds up online connectivity but the streaming is noticeably faster as well.

360's dash is more "connected" to LIVE than the XMB is to PSN. With the 360 is like everywhere you go there is community information. Games are rated, including disc based games. No MW2 LAN Tournaments on Ps3

Ps3 has a gamebattles ladder but nowhere near as rewarding as the 360 ladders.

Hundreds of more clans meaning lots of more matches resulting in a more competitive community.

Due to XBL being a premium service multiple accounts and leaderboard inflation isn't as big of a matter on 360.

360 Version will most likely get maps and updates first.

Cross Game Inviting and Party Chatting makes organizing quicker and efficient.

The XBL Community and amount of people utilizing all of the features is what puts XBL over the PsN.

I've played Modern Warfare 2 on both the PSN and Xbox Live. There is NO difference at all. I can join my friend's game, invite them, chat with them, set up a party, and uh... play online with thousands of other people. I would mention Party chat as a positive for 360 but even that got blocked on MW2 so.... after seeing Modern Warfare 2 on the PSN, I honestly don't see how Live is worth that subscription fee.

For all intents and purposes, I feel Microsoft charging to play online is a scam and a rip off. Why should you, I, or anyone else pay to play RANDOM games online?

Does Microsoft charge you a fee to use their PC OS system online? No. Does Apple charge you to use their OS? No. Sony doesn't charge, certainly Nintendo doesn't charge. Further insult, Microsoft has virtually the same LIVE service for PC gamers and they don't charge people to use that. Apparently they tried and failed but kept it going...FOR FREE (a slap in the face, imo). Instead, they charge you to play on XBOX LIVE. Why?

Think about this, dragonking76, when you purchase a $60 game, the code to play those games online is already on each and every disk. The developers put that code on the disk because you have already paid for it. All Microsoft is doing is blocking you from playing the content YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR until you fork MORE money over to them.

I'm sorry, give me tons of disagrees if you wish, but as far as I can tell, Microsoft has turned XBOX users into gullible cash cows and I refuse to pay to become that.

Really, how many times do we have to hear the "Xbox Live is the best gaming experience because XBL is the best gaming experience" argument? And by argument I mean "argument" since nothing of any real substance is offered. That the same ones since day one it went into service, namely cross gaming chat and invites, are the only ones that matter while all the rest is window dressing. That much of that has been on the PS3 offered directly and indirectly as soon as the console was available.

I've been playing Xbox 360 since March '08, and I feel safe to say that the 360's online service is only marginally better than the PS3's online service. The only thing it has over the PS3 is p2p networking, other than that... there's really nothing that makes it superior to the PS3. What's the console's failure rate in comparison to the PS3? Can it play BluRay DVDs?

I only own a 360, but I am going to take the logical side here. The Ps3 offers bluray playback and free online. the only reason WHY xbox is more popular is because of the marketing scheme it has, not to mention it came out a year earlier.

Well, there's no argument whether or not Xbox LIVE is the better online gaming service. Of course it is! By miles. Even a blind, 2 month old walrus with Down Syndrome can clearly see that. The only question is whether the 360 version of COD: MW2 sold better because of Xbox LIVE, which is most likely exactly the case. It is nice to play with people with mics sometimes.

things are not organize on PSN. You have to go around and around just to find something. Quite annoying. Plus they don't have demo for every game (like arcade games etc....) Are they expect people to just buy it? or is that in the demo tap (see so confusing). You don't have to jump through loops like that on live. Cross game chat is a neat feature and really make u feel like u are connected. PS3 feel very disconnected. It is free so can't really complain, but i mean they should charge PSN to get money to improve it. $20 a year might not be so bad, and i don't mean Qore.

For the record, i connect both x360 and PS3 to the same router (i have high speed comcast so don't say i have dial up), and the max time to dowload 1gig/higher on live is 1 hr (mostly around 30mins). I have to leave PS3 on for 3 days just to dowload KZ2, MGS4, Bayonetta, and Heavenly sword (i check after 2 days and they are only at 80% complete, not to mention that i kept getting an error message. What the hell? It take such a long time (it is just demo, so shouldn't they compress it or something to improve the loading speed?) Another stupid part is that u have to install them afterward? Can't u just play it right off the bat? PSN and the PS3 interface need lots of improvement. I don't want to go to the setup just to get re-directed to somewhere else for the setup (example: u go to theme setup and it redirect u to the photo panel for set up? WTF, what is the point of putting the setup there in the first place?

I like the fact that it is free, but I can see why it is free.

How are things not organized on PSN? i have no problem finding what i need. As for cross game chat, i do not need it to enjoy online gaming. Its a cool little extra but not worth paying for it. I do not want to talk to someone thats not playing i am playing, and i do not want to be bothered while destryoying geth. The demos for the arcade games i can not argue with however if i want to see what an arcade looks like i have no problem looking for videos online. also they do not have that many more demos on XBL as they do for PSN anyway and besides if you have a 360 with silver you can still get those demos. I can not speak for everyone but i have never had to wait so long for downloads and i have my ps3 connected wirelessly. 10 mins tops for me most of the time. The install doesnt bother me either because its 30 secs. The interface i preferr to the Xbox's. Its easier on my eyes and much easier for me to find what i need. The only upgrades the interface needs is the friends list displaying more information. And i have no idea wtf u mean by setup thing. ive never had a problem setting anything up. Overall this is a personal preference thing.

I do think xbox live is a much much better system than the ps network but i refuse to pay for it. Im now back on silver and use my ps3 for the online gaming. Its nice the ps3 online play is free but you really do get what you pay for. Im just tight with my cash or it would be xbox live all the way.

And yeah the ps3 interface is a bit confusing to some. And installs are a pain. No if's and but's. Thats bad design from Sony. My hd is down to 15 gig due to installs. Why o why does a game on xbox run without install yet the same game has one ps3. Doesn't run any better. If anything its a design flaw. Don't get me wrong i like my ps3 but it's internal software seems a little rushed.

thanks for proving my point. It is not organize in that sense that u have to jump around or even go to another source (video online) just to get information on something. They should have everything listed (demo,picture,description,rela ted DLC,etc.....) in one category for that particular game that you were looking at. It is much more efficient and organize that way so you don't have to ran around looking for it.

I'm not sure where you are from, but here in America, our network is not that fast. Comcast is the fastest thing we have right now and that how long it takes to download something. Or maybe cause i have like 4 other wireless laptops running at the same time which eat up the bandwidth. Regardless, Live is faster when you ran both Live and PSN at the same time from the same network. I used direct ethernet connection for both. Wireless connection is unstable and too much interference.

To reduce the load time for demo, just compress the dam game. Bayoneta look worst on PS3 and the file is huge (1.4/1.6 gig uncompress?) and u still have to install it afterward. Another thing that i see was that they try to download everything at the same time, hence everything become slower. On live, things download one at a time so it is a lot faster that way. PSN is not efficient and that is that.

I like PS3, mostly for blue ray and some good exclusives (demon soul or UC2), but what Sony fanboy said about PSN is "better" than Live on N4G, c'mon u guys can't be serious. Talk about lying through your teeth and cover up to protect what, an inanimated object?

I know that it is free (which i like), but like i said, I can see why it is free. They sure didn't make it easy on ya. I wouldn't mind paying for PSN so that Sony can improve on what really matters. This success of COD on 360 is more about demographics and a lack of 360 games this year.Shooters will always appeal more to the racist,horrible little teens that flood Live.
Me and 2 life long gamer friends cancelled Live this year because it's not worth the money.
PSN has better games this year and less lag and drop outs than Live in my experience.It also has larger player counts for PS3 exclusives,and yes 32 player is better.The XMB is also a much faster GUI to use and I prefer the store.
