BD will win, not that i want it to but all this hype and bullshit talk of the BD disc space actualy being used up will kill HD DVD.

Even though, the codec for HD DVD can fit twice as much data then that of the BD codec, mpeg? the old one.
Meaning, that seeing as the discs arent twice the size, HD DVD will be able to to fit more or less the same amount of data.

But more space isnt neccesserily a good thing, i mean there games, there isnt a decent one out of the bunch and one of them apparently uses over 35 gb of space, i for one want to know what they are filling these discs with because the games dont look that great, the best looking game on the PS3 uses the same amount then Gears of War does for the 360.

well the fact is that bluRay does sell well over all and it is still a gaming media just like DVD, if I were you guys..i wouldn't get the 200 dollar add on for the xbox yet. i picked up the add on. for 150 not bad a cheap way to jump into the hddvd format. this was before blu ray really took off. I dont think there will be a winner, just a dominant format. I definatly dont regret getting it. I do regret watching it on a sd tv. I will probably pick up a stand alone blu ray player just so i can have both.

They got to the point. Toshiba is going to include a HD-DVD drive with all of its laptops. They say they could sell 10 mil in a year. Well that is nice, but I hate watching movies on my Laptop. I think that it will help HD-DVD a little but not like a standalone unit.

I'm guessing if it has a HD-DVD built in there will be some sort of output divice so you can send it to your HDTV, many HDTV's have PC monitor support and I am sure more in the future will as well. You don't have to just watch it on your laptop.

You may not like watching DVDs on your laptop big_tim, but most college students do--and college students are a huge market for laptops. When you're out of state and poor, laptops are a great way to watch movies with friends, especially because you can do it anywhere.

The popularity of watching movies on laptops is shown also by the prevalence of widescreen laptops these days.

I own an Xbox360, but I'm not an HD-DVD fanboy. I really don't care which format becomes the next universal disc format.
The effort was mde by SONY to include the Blu Ray player in the PS3, but even if Blu Ray were to fail, the PS3 can still utilize the disc space for games. The PS3 will not die without Blu Ray movie support, although it would certainly help them if Blu Ray became the standard.
I'm just tired of this whole "format war" and I'd like to be able to move forward and buy new hardware that I know will be supported in 3 years.

Not only is this old news, but it comes from the most unreliable source on the net (a site that uses words such as "HORRIBLE" on their headlines).

This is old news because we already knew Toshiba wants to include HD-DVD in every laptop. Assuming that they were the only PC vendors to sell a next-gen format with their computers, how is that gonna help? People watch movies at home on their stand alone or console; very few do it on PCs, much less will do it on laptops. But that's still assuming they're the only ones in the market to do so, which is not true. Sony is selling blu-ray with their high-end PCs and laptops. They could just add them to more computers by holiday season. Dell supports blu-ray, and HP is already shipping "Super Multi Blu
". Mac also supports Blu-ray. So, Toshiba is alone on this one. I love it how the writer ends up speculating about Acer adding an HD-DVD drive, as if they were an important manufacturer.

As I said, HP supporting "Super Multi Blu" means they're supporting Blu-ray and HD-DVD. It's not a set of words I invented, it's a product made by LG that reads both blu-ray and HD-DVD. So, I did imply HP supports HD-DVD.

By the way, the Elite is sold out because it wasn't produced en mass (nice marketing tactic, microsoft; make your user base believe you're sold out), because it is for enthusiasts, for those that were on the fence for the lack of technology, for collectors and for fanboys. That's how few were produced. You really think that's the one that sells the most? Hell, even the HDMI output is crippled, and it's pretty much worthless if it doesn't have a next-gen format out of the box.

The reason I say it's worthless is that why would I need HDMI if I don't have a next-gen format? Especially on a console that only has HDMI on the minority of SKUs. It's WORTHLESS, unless studios decide they wanna activate DRM. If that happens, most Xbox 360 users will be screwed; so yeah, HDMI worked, but only for the minority. On the other hand, HDMI is not worthless for PS3, as it can deliver 7.1 uncompressed audio for games (example: LAIR), on 360 it just isn't worth it to program for (it's not even HDMI 1.3, so who knows if it's even capable of that).

Did it ever ocurr to you that most people watch movies at home, or with small portable video players? Even fewer have their media centers connected to their Home Theatre. But a Laptop, due to its hardware constraints can hardly act as a media center. A laptop does benefit from storage though; but if you're going for storage, Blu-ray is definitely the way to go.

For what I just told you, Acer will not be the next Magnavox/RCA/LG/Vizio, and also because they are owned by Telmex and they have no business whatsoever on format wars. Magnavox/RCA/Whatever might have huge marketshare for cheap DVD players, but you know how much Acer has for market share? Yeah, absolutely nothing. Well, not nothing, but the marketshare on PCs and laptops are mainly Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba and Apple. Everything else is niche. Dell is the one with most marketshare and they support blu-ray only.

I love it how people want to shut "Sony protection group" up, but they listen to troll websites like "The inquirer", and take whatever they say as gospel, if it favors their opinions.

I just read your response to someone, below and what you're saying is wrong. It's useless for Toshiba to put an HD-DVD in every laptop if nobody will buy movies for those, if Blu-ray is the storage format of choice (it's even cheaper, and it's better storagewise), and if there's no software on HD-DVD. The reason most computers have DVD now is not because people watch movies on their computers (unless they're media centers, and frankly those are very few; NOT laptops), but because its good for storage, and the number one reason is software. On storage it has lost already, and there's already software on Blu-ray (only compatible with PS3 of course, but HD-DVD doesn't seem to be having content other than movies any time soon).

Your logic of "The cheapest products introduce new technology faster" fails in most categories since the cheapest products cannot support these new technologies, otherwise they would be expensive.

HD-DVD drives and Blu-ray drives/players are nearly identical in manufacturing costs, so your argument is moot. Even HD-DVD discs cost more to manufacture than Blu-ray discs (on a per-layer comparison). Blu-ray is also being advertised by Retailers as the superior format, and thus is kicking HD-DVD to the floor in terms of hardware and movie sales. Add PS3 into the equation, and you can easily see the outcome of all this.

Even if they put a HD-DVD player in every Laptop it will not matter that much. Laptops aren't used primarily to connect to big HDTV sets but the PS3 is. So they can sell 10 million HD-DVD Laptops and take a lost and only 500 thousand actually use the HD-DVD player for movies. I wouldn't buy an HD-DVD movie just for my Laptop I would download the movie or watch a dvd. It's not the same experience on a laptop, no surround, small screen. I watch my blu-rays on my 42 inch set with surround and it is like a theater and that is what people are expecting when they watch HD films. Toshiba will take a huge lost with this one and I am sure there shareholders will not be happy.

In order for this to be viewed as a secret weapon it would have to mean that these HD-DVD drives would help drives sales of HD-DVD movies. Why would anyone bother to buy HD-DVD movies over DVD to watch on a laptop? The only way I would do so is if I already had a HD-DVD player at home and thus I could take my HD-DVD with me when I went on trip and could watch them on my laptop.

So again I do not see Toshiba putting in a HD-DVD drive as being the big secret weapon the Inquirer is making it out to be. I do. Most military folks do. Especially the ones still living in barracks. 1-3 soldiers have one and others have portable DVD players w/ screens.

Many laptops..well at least mine have HDMI or DVI and or optical outs.

I never mentioned it being a "secret weapon", I was talking facts in general as to why Toshiba might put an HD-DVD drive in there regardless of how Blue-Ray is doing. Just like I posted that HD-DVD in a laptop drive can do more than just watch movies.

Just as Sony will put Blue-Ray in their laptops, it's not so much about watching movies. While of course it can only help with the name recognition and other positive factors.

In 2008 what makes you think the format war will still be within their reach by that time. Out of the 9.2 million laptops sold how many had hd dvd drives. By forcing the hd dvd standard on the consumer unless it comes at the same cost u are basically forcing the consumer to buy something they might not want or need because chances are by that time the same consumer has already purchased a blu ray drive. Get serious i honestly think this move will have little or no impact on the war by 2008 unless these drives are sold at a loss or sumthin forcing them to lose more money than they already have. I mean sometimes it hurts to lose but toshiba really just needs to call it quits and strike a deal with sony. Sony did it with dvd's i mean you win some you lose some damn

Was really crappy. Other then spinning the fact that they think toshiba making the drives standard is a secret weapon is actually not a bold move by any means necessary. Its a desperation move. Now they are forcing you to use the drive. If they offer this feature without any additional cost then maybe it might work. But i doubt it. Toshiba is loosing millions over the cost of the drive just like SONY. Im not to fond of there laptop cooling design. Alot of there models are VERY prone to over heating. This standard drive could really do more damage if they don't fix it. For there customer sake.

I am only stating I feel this will not be the secret weapon The Inquirer has made it out to be for the HD-DVD format, as have others in this thread. I feel the exact same way for laptops with Blu-ray drives as well so I am not defending anything here as you imply. You have not countered this statement by saying you feel it will create a big surge in sales for HD-DVD so why do you feel we disagree? The only thing I am saying is that people who do use their laptops for watching movies will most likely stick with cheaper DVD's rather then Blu-ray or HD-DVD. Sure it can't hurt for Toshiba to put them in but again the only thing I have said from the beginning is I doubt it will spur any kind of HD-DVD movie sales. So given that is Toshiba's take on the PS3 it would seem absurd to think that they or we should now count laptops with either a HD-DVD or Blu-ray drive as actual movie watching hardware that is going to generate big sales of HD-DVD or Blu-ray like a stand alone HD player would.

The main problem Is that Sony placed Blu ray first and gamers second. You heard the arrogance " We can sell 5 million PS3s with no games." And for the most part they were right. People don't seem to realize that the real battle is between Sony and Toshiba. Microsoft is more of a hindrance. Sonys biggest money maker is their games division, they want to change that with pushing Bluray technology in the PS3. Bluray isn't needed for games, they just want to sell their Blu ray movies through the PS brand name. Its a lot easier to introduce a new product(Bluray movies) through an already established one(playstation). If they wouldn't have tried to push Bluray on the public the PS3 most likely would have been a success. These are interesting articles that explains these points very clearly................

As to if its a Blu-ray player first then a games system or vice versus is pure symantics. In the end the PS3 is a very capable blu-ray player and a very capable game system as well. The fact I can enjoy both in one systems is one of the reason I purchased a PS3.

Sony would much rather sell us games and movies since they make money from both.

This is what I call brilliant strategy, which Sony fans will never understand.

Sony is bleeding dry from the initial high production costs of including Blu-ray in PS3, and the gamble hasn't paid off 'cos PS3 is selling like yesterday's poo thanks to Microsoft and Nintendo.

The production cost of HD-DVDs have gone down by now, so Toshiba won't have to cushion as much losses by including HD-DVD players in their laptops. We all know Toshiba laptops will sell like hotcakes, so the early PS3-advantage will be obliterated in a blink of an eye and HD-DVD will prevail... unless Sony includes Blu-ray in Vaio.

But if Sony do that, they suffer even more losses and will go into bankrupty in no time.

You know the funny thing is I have seen tons of people argue that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are not even needed for viewing on HDTV's that DVD are good enough. Yet now we are suppost to believe that because a laptop has the ability to play HD-DVD or Blu-ray movies that people will start buying up those expensive HD movies like crazy rather then the cheaper DVD version to watch on their laptops. Sorry but I don't buy that. If people are going to argue you can't see a differents between DVD and HD DVD or Blu-ray except on the largest of HDTV screens there is no way your going to convince me there is a big difference on a 17" laptop screen. the 360has the highest atach rate, it has over 6 million live users, it has a better marketplace, it has better games as of now, it had more games during the same period as the ps3 .

It has more exclusives then xbox1.
It has 1080p and true surround sound, it comes with hd cables and a headset, it has a better online experience, it has movies,tv shows and more arcade games, the ps3 still has no games nor is the ps3store anyting to right home about and most ps3's are collecting dust like mine waiting for games.

As of nw the 360 is destroying the ps3 an has the games yet you bash something becuase your simply childish. you most likely didnt even pay for your own system.

You have a point there, but the format war is not just about movies. Same argument for PS3 isn't it, that Blu-ray was meant for storage of data for games and not movies?

yeah but the fact is the blueray wasnt put into the ps3 for games, thats just a ecuse they use to make it seem like its specialy for games but its so they can winthe format war, most ps3 games up to today dont even use the ammount of a dd9 let alone fill a blueray up.

Theres no reason for that and the 360 proves that.

"More storage" - well HD DVD space is enough for any movie 1080P movie.
I do agree about "More support" ... that's the only advantage I think blu-ray has when it comes to movies. If I were looking for more storage for storing files and other things not related to movies.. then we should be talking about Holographic Versatile Disc. Don't you think? Is 3.9 terabytes good enough for you?

well were there again hd versus blu ray well what have formats got to do with games sony have used bluray in the ps3,why well i hope to bring us somethink we haven,t seen already better graphics no loading times behind the scenes interveiws etc etc etc
every time this subject comes up we go on about how many films it sells
hell this site even shows links to toshiba etc under the title heading
i thought this site was about games not for film buffs
it doesn,t look good for n4g with adverts pointing to hd dvd under the
heading and not having bluray as well and that applies the other way round
what i think most people want are new games not just remakes somethink different by giving devs space that will happen which ever format wins but if the top men can get away with just the bare min they will as long as it makes money thats why they are rubbing there hands at the sight of the wi
top games will come from in house with the exception of a few and if they haven,t the space on these platforms the easy option comes up

hollywood is not in the UK. Obvioulsy Blu-ray is kicking @$$ here in the states... but HD DVD success does not depends on the UK.
