Is Modern Warfare 2 Causing RROD? A Possible COD-spiracy?

Reports have been rolling across the Gamesmen Media Desk, as of the last four days, from our small community and their friends lists. Reports about what, you say? The dreaded Red Ring of Death, of course. If the numbers multiply on a percentage basis, it would seem that Xbox360's could very well be dropping like flies. Again. What game was spooling and spinning as these unfortunate circumstances occurred? Modern Warfare 2.

Games don't cause RROD. There was a report like this a few years ago talking about Halo 3 and Forza 2 causing RROD. It happens with all these bigs games. It's because people play these games for long periods of times, as long as 12 hours, and that has the console on that long, which may cause it to overheat. There's your explanation. You could keep your ps3 on for a very long time and as long as you're not suffocating it, you'll have no problems. My PS3 has only been off like once in the last 6 months because I went outta town. Older 360s can't handled to much prolonged stress so yeah... certainly not the game that's killing the 360s.. just overuse. The only times my console went down was from overuse on playing the best titles.... First it was Dead Rising, then Gears of War, then GTA IV, and so on, the one thing these games have in common is that they push the 360 to it's limits, like an over-clocked PC running a game at max settings.

This is a recipe for disaster which is why the 360 has a high failure rate, especially when popular titles are released. Games that push the limits + playing them for 8-12 hours straight = RROD

The two component making noise is the DVD drive (which you can alleviate by installing a game) and the fans. The newer Xbox 360 aren't that much quieter, unless you can find one with the quiet fans. DVD drive, well, you are sh!t out of luck!

I haven't seen or heard of any recent 360s with the quieter fans. All mine are the noisy DC brushless fans.

funny thing is, mw2 has been proven to:

- run at faster framerates on the 360
- load faster on 360 straight off the disc, even when compared to the ps3 installed.

It plays great and certainly does not 'chug'. I havent noticed a single framerate issue, but then again I am enjoying the game when I play it, not testing the frame rate.

Ok lets break it down from a personal perspective; Live is a really good service with a generally younger and louder audience whereby around 40-50% use a headset and I have only ever experienced major bugs in Gears 2 and the L4D(only the once it crashed).

On my PS3 I have had issues with 2 games Killzone 2 (after first patch) and GTA IV before patches and playing with people with bad connection. On the PS3 about 25% of people use headsets, a significantly lower number but I also rarely encounter the enraged 10 year olds, the few times it has happened is in Killzone 2.

From what I have personally experienced, not only at my house but at my friends houses is that I can not see a significant difference in the two services in terms of speed and bugs.

I would like to have this, however, the games that I play whilst enjoying listening to my own music are Wipeout HD and Burnout Paradise and they both have the custom soundtrack option, so it's no big loss. I would like the option for Fight Night Round 4, I've never been a fan of the Fight Night soundtracks.

For an Xbox to meet my gaming requirements I would have to buy a wireless adpator (I think costing around £60) and subscribe to xbox live (I think costing around £40 a year). That made the xbox a far more expensive option for me at that time and as far as I'm aware that's still the case today.

I bet if you looked at the number of reported incidents of RROD (Or YLOD for that matter) and the games "associated" with having caused them, there's probably a similar percentage of users every single time.

I.E. if Game X sells 100 copies and 10 people report it causing the RROD, then Game Y sells 1000 copies and 100 people report RROD, does it mean Game Y is causing the RROD? No, it just means with more copies of the game floating around, more individual errors are associated with it, when in actuality the occurrence of the error is no greater.

it is the simple fact the older model 360s their cooling systems are flawed when the disc is turning it turns at a faster speed making the Xbox work harder. It has nothing to do with a specific game the newer sku systems have a better cooling design when the xbox works even harder. the ylod is from the thermal compound wearing away after a couple of years and then it stops transferring the heat from the cpu and gpu to the heat sinks so then it gets really hot and desolders it self from mobo it is not the fan. now for the rrod it is the fan and the fact that it can not move enough hot air from inside the console so that makes things escalate when you add the dirt that gets trapped in the console from normal use and that dirt usually stick to the heat sinks which make them get hotter now those fans that already have a problem cooling the console have even more heat to deal with and that is what makes it desolder from the mobo

More people bought MW2 for 360 than PS3. In addition to that, most people like Xbox Live far more than they like PSN. The economy is awful, so, you have a bunch of people sitting at home with nothing to do in addition to the 12 - 21 year olds that have no motivation outside of "Prestiging". The bulk of this activity is happening on Xbox Live. These people are playing all day, everyday, they have little aspiration outside of dominating online games (until they have to pay bills). It's the excessive use causing the problem, not the game itself.

Want to test the theory? Watch the movie "Old School" and slam beers until it's over. Who will be blamed when you end up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning? The movie? Or the individual who drank in excess?

Both consoles when played for long periods of time will eventually die. Its inevitable yes the 360 is more prone to these hardware problems but the ps3 is not immune. A few of my ps buddies who play for long periods of time have both had to get their ps3s repaired i dont know if thats the case with everyone who has the same gaming habits.. The majority of the breakdowns for the xbox are probably the old models as they tend to break down frequently but at least theirs a good warranty out there for them.

my friend got a RROD on is xbox 360 while playing MW2, bt it isn't because it's the game that was causing problem, it's just because he didn't play with his 360 since a long time and then he played for like 12 hours straight and the day after played for like another 8 hours straight.
