Valve: 360 Community Head and Shoulders Above PS3

Left 4 Dead project lead Chet Faliszek has said the 360 community is "head and shoulders above the PS3", and that's why the multiplayer-focused Left 4 Dead series isn't on Sony's console.

Speaking to CVG Faliszek said the community aspects of the PC and Xbox platforms "really fit" Left 4 Dead - so it's not coming out on PS3.

"Right now for Left 4 Dead 2 we're looking at PC and 360 because the community aspects really fit the game - it's all about playing with your friends," he said.

I like Valve's games, they are solid. Having said that, these guys make some of the lamest excuses I have ever heard for not developing a game on a certain platform.

It IS the best single player campaign as a TPS.

Regardless of what PS3 fanboys say, Valve's right. The 360 online community does spend more money and most of them use mics(mostly due to the fact that the 360 comes with a mic).

Plus the 360 community supports their exclusives better:

Halo:ODST(called an "expansion pack" by PS3 fanboys)- 2 million sold on day one.

Uncharted 2(supposedly "the best single-player campaign ever that nothing on the 360 can compare to)- 300,000 copies sold on day one.

Anyone else see a HUGE contradiction here? I only game on the PS3, but I KNOW that Live is better from countless bouts of COD4 ive had at friends houses. The only reason I don't game on Live is because I don't feel Live is worth 50 bucks a year. PSN DOES have the better value, but Live IS better.

I game on both the 360 and the PS3. While they both offer similiar features, I feel that the 360 does a better job with its online features.

Much better friends data, the ability to see where the player is doing/level they are on by simply using the dashboard, the ability to join games through the dashboard, cross game chat, EVERYONE has a mic on the 360.. but then again you do PAY for it, so it better have some advantages over the PSN.

The support PSN offered for UT3 could be given to it and MS, as Valve know, just won't allow mods and stuff on the 360(nothing for free) which makes L4D on 360 a sheer waste of your time esp as you have to pay more for it too!

If you can't get it on your PC don't ge it. I have it for both and, rest assured, the 360 game never coes out of it's box while I often play on PC to this day as there's real support on that platfrm-which Sony might have allowed but MS won't on console. It's a shadow of the PC exerience and just not worth buying-Valve suport it as it's lots of cash for zero effort for them and should say so. It certainly isn't about "community" as they do nothing, or allowed to do nothing to create one on 360. Why in the hell do we have a friends list on PSN. If it's not to play with your friends then I don't know what it's for. This is complete BS. I play Left 4 Dead all the time, and even though the 360 comes with mics, there have been many a time where I've play with numerous amounts of people who don't use the mic, so that cuts out the mic issue. Not to mention most of the people who have mics on XBL are annoying 10 year olds, or people who get on and talk shigady the whole game, so what's the point of mics besides talking shigady back and forth.

Cross game chat. If so that's complete BS if someone's going to play a specific game, their going to play it. Send them a message to their X-Media bar, and go on about your business. Cross game chat is a convenience and nothing more.

This is another excuse from Valve, and frankly I think it's an attempt to sway the 360 audience more since, they know they won't be developing for the PS3. And it's wise not to develop for the PS3 at this point, because Valve will be bashed out of this world by PS3 gamers for all the BS they spread over this gen.

The community excuse is pure BS, Valve just don't want to come out of pocket and make the PS3 version. Valve may as well be a 1st or 2nd party studio for MS.

Before all the hate comes about why is it not fair for Valve to make 360 exclusives, but it's ok for Insomniac.

as a big fan of Half life, it disappoints me that a company makes such lame excuses not to develop for another console, of course the ps3. Both fanboy sides have either defended valve or accused them of being lazy of the sort. I laugh when 360 fanboys point out that sonys exclusive devs like Naughty Dog, guerrilla games and sucker punch didn't produce them on 360. Its really easy to point out thou that those companys have not come out and said the 360 is too hard to program for, or better yet the 360 community is not strong enough for their game. Even you PS3 fanboys ADMITTED it a week or so back in a thread about "Should Sony Package Headsets". Most all of you said "No, I only use my headset if a friend is online and never any other time." The PS3 community doesn't show team work through strangers at all...

The only game that does exhibit this is the SOCOM community where it's pretty much required that you own a mic or you'll get kicked out of the game from other players. Hence why it's only 1 of 2 multiplayer games I play on my PS3 (SOCOM and Uncharted 2 - even tho people don't talk on that either...) Besides that, it's single player campaigns on PS3 for me.

Other than that, playing any multiplayer PSN game online is barren, dry and communication-free. How you all can sit here and lie saying that it isn't is absolute BS. L4D is a serious team-work game and it takes communication to beat the levels. Most PS3 fanboys wouldn't know that but "claim" they know L4D. If you don't work together, you will die.

So yes, I agree, PC and 360 community are more geared towards games that take team work. A lot more hardcore players choose 360 because of this. Playing shooters without comm's is called casual play. I'm a hardcore multiplayer-gamer so when I encounter people without mics on PSN, it pisses me off. Stick to single player campaigns if you don't plan on communicating. You mess it up for everyone else.

Valve made the amazing Half life 2 and its episodes, which makes all of your opinions obsolete. They are right, the community for 360 is much more alive and has many more fluid features than PSN, such as cross game chat, community playdates. Actually 360 users buy "a game". Since there is no variety, and no choice, the sales figures are bloated. The PS3 has a wider and better library, and the PS3 users don't all have to floak to a single title. Most publishers claim PS3 is selling more software, especially when you consider the year lead the 360 had, and how they should have more consoles out there.

Valve made the amazing Half-Life 2 and its episodes, which makes all of your opinions obsolete. I still love how people are calling L4D and L4D2 360 exclusive. I mean honestly, exclusive means it's on that particular gaming system only. So 95% of 360 games AREN'T exclusive considering they are also on PC (and usually are better to play there). I for one love L4D and have been playing the L4D2 demo but not on the 360, nope, on the PC with loads of friends.

You all need to remember, the online community is largest on PC's. It was there first, because the PS2 didn't really have online and Xbox was out way after all of your older consoles, even the PS1. Xbox was the first to have true online but they made you pay for it. PC, still to do this have I not paid "monthly or annually" for any game I play. I am not a WOW player and will never be one.

I can understand they don't have the resources or talent to work across 3 platforms, thats fair enough its their choice to make the games on whatever systems they want to but to take a swipe at the Playstation community is just pretty low. I game on a PC, PS3 and 360 so get the best from each platfrom but I can honestly say I've spent more on PSN content than I have on the 360 and the PS3 has better support for modding, just look at Unreal Tournament 3. Another good point to talk about regarding online for the PS3 and 360 is Sony doesn't require third parties charge for DLC. Doesn't Microsoft do everything they can to force it on them? It's free to go online on the PS3. I won't say the PS3 is better but I think it's as good as Xbox Live.

If you are looking to actually play games online and not just socialize with your friends over headsets instead of actually hanging out with them, The PS3 has alot less lag than the 360. I have played COD4 on both systems using the same wired connection and I find that games on the 360 have almost twice as much lag as the PS3. Also, if you're going to make an idiotic claim that is completely untrue regarding PSN users and their use of headsets, make sure that you actually play an online match of any online PS3 game. More people use headsets than I see on the 360. The only thing that I can easily say is better on the 360 is cross-game party chat and seeing as how PSN users will be getting that soon, the one thing that xbots always bring to console fights is losing its touch.

Well, I was too vague with my comment.
I meant to say that PS3 owners of late - have sooo many choices; all of which in my opinion make L4D2 look like a less profitable venture for Valve. I think they are acutely aware that their L4D2 (basing this off the Demo I've played - yes, I own a 360)...that their game would need a graphics overhaul and be MORE....I can't put that into a better explanation, because I don't even know what it is - but L4D2 is missing that "something great" from what I've read and the demo....it's very meh to me.

But - this is all for moot anyways. Valve have stated many times that the PS3 is too hard to develop for and looking at many third party titles of late - makes Valve look very very sad.

I've been playing the L4D2 demo a lot recently (since last Saturday because I pre-purchased it :P) and I don't need a headset and a headset in the team doesn't really help until you start playing on the much harder difficulties. There has probably been less headsets in the L4D2 demo so far than when I would normally play multiplayer on COD4 on PS3! But then text chat does make up for that but still. UC2 could be fun, but if you get a connection error (which I do almost every other match due to the "Amazing Wi-Fi capabilities") then you lose $40,000 and your rank goes down, kinda a little overboard, don't you think? I went from rank 20 to 1 after getting 2 connection errors.

So in my case, I would rather pay for LIVE, which I still use wirelessly, and not get a connection error, than PSN, where you obviously get what you pay for.

I've got a blu-t headset and sometimes use it.

Talking to teammates is normally found within the name, i/e MATES/Friends.

Used for clan matches.

Then you used to get other idiots slagging you off on PC, for not doing things the way others want you to.

My mates that have a 360, get spam voice messages calling them all sorts because they beaten the other person.

Clan matches are better for chat, always were, always will be.

And yes it takes a low spec PC to run this game.

When firing the any weapon, does not feel as though your hitting anything.

Gabe and co, really need to up the graphics engine and games they make if they want to compete on PS3.

I completed L4D in a few hours. Was EAZY.

Valve really does piss me off. They have not made enough incredible games to act all high and mighty. The reason they are not working on the PS3 is because the PS3 is a new piece of tech that they are not used to dealing with. The 360 consists of basically the same tech of a mediocre gaming PC, and seeing as how the source engine (which is not looking so good these days) was originally made for PCs, it's very difficult for them to port it onto the PS3.

That they are game play innovators and not game design innovators, and they simply don't have people who can program for the PS3. PS3 owners aren't that upset, because it's just a typical FPS that is all co-op VS. zombies, sure it's something that we'd like to have, but it's nothing particularly amazing. As far as I can tell, L4D2 is not a significant improvement over the last one, so even that's not impressive. Also, playstation owners have more sophisticated and diverse tastes, whereas Xbox players are FPS lovers, who will gobble up whatever trendy FPS is on its way next. I'm not saying this to be offensive to Xbox players, I'm just pointing out that the FPS genre in particular does really well on that platform, it started last gen because FPS was more of a PC genre, and since Xbox is similar to PC from a game design perspective,a lot of FPS programmers decided to make an extra buck by porting to Xbox, plus microsoft encouraged them to so that they could get some exclusives, whereas the playstation platform has always focused on other genres. But the real problem here is that Valve seems so unconcerned about the prospect of really ever getting onto the Play Station platform that they'd rather insult the community than own up to the fact that they just don't have enough experienced people to work on PS3 and they seem to be an insular group so they're reluctant to take new people on.

I am just being logical here, the Xbox community is so much larger than the PS3 community. It is therefore going to be getting more sales on the 360 in comparison to the PS3, not to mention it'll be played a lot more on the 360 because of a larger community, increasing word of mouth and in turn gaining more sales.

The PS3 online community is VERY small compared to the amount of people logging into Xbox Live on a daily basis. I bet more people log into Xbox Live in the run of a day than what people log on to the PS3 in three days. I am just being realistic here. It's common sense. To Valve, releasing L4D for the PS3 is almost as bad as releasing it for the Wii. ALMOST.

L4D2 uses the aging Source engine designed before we even had multi-core processors in PCs, cannot be optimized properly (or cheaply) to work on PS3 (see orange box).
