Japan: 1 Million Xbox 360s Sold in 4yrs, Should Microsoft Give up?

Gamesthirst: With some voicing their concerns publicly and gamers being furious about Microsoft's lack of first party studios, the question must be asked: Should Microsoft abandon their efforts in Japan and focus on the western regions like Europe and North America? Or should the software giant keep waging war on Sony and Nintendo's territory? The recent data we found is depressing to say the least, if Microsoft is in this business to make a profit and not just throw money at problems, then maybe they should consider leaving. Apparently, the Japanese are just not into the Xbox 360, let's have a look at some stats.

1 million in four years? hahaha

Major_Tom5313d ago

I thought you didn't play the number game?

Mo0eY5313d ago

How is he playing the number game? He's just repeating what the article reads - it is quite sad though, lmao. 1 million Xbox 360s with only 500,000 being playable, and of that, only 30,000 probably play it daily.

Yup, that's quite sad.

Microsoft Xbox 3605313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

They should pack up and go. You can't sell crap to the Japanese.

ultimolu5313d ago

I see the idiot bots sniped your bubbles as well.

I think MS *should* pull out but then again, they should just stay for the lulz.

AngryTypingGuy5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

I think they should keep trying. I'll say it yet again: Japan is a big rock that MS has to keep chipping away at. In time, success will come with persistence.

Three things that MS needs to do right for success in not only Japan, but the rest of the world. 1. Adapt a Sony-like business model. By that I mean keep supporting the 360 long into the next gen. Let people get their true money's worth. 2. And this is probably the most crucial...only release the next console after it has been put through the ringer and is ready for market. MS needs to correct its reputation for hardware quality. I think the next Xbox will be their last chance. 3. Slowly build up first party studios.

If they can do those things, they will find success. Also, they need to be 110% behind Natal when it launches.

Defectiv3_Detectiv35313d ago

Americans will buy any crap - Hummers, Big Macs, rims, etc.

infekt5312d ago

I hope other nations realise what crappoli of anything MS makes. Looks like European and Japanese quality has totally buried the competition in recent years.

1. Star Ocean 4 (life-to-date: 208,521)

2. Blue Dragon (life-to-date: 203,740)

3. Tales of Vesperia (life-to-date: 194,714)

4. Last Remnant (life-to-date: 154,493)

5. Lost Odyssey (life-to-date: 40,000)

if theyd spent less on bribes hype n crappy hardware and more on first party games they might still b a contender...

Immortal Kaim5313d ago

This site posts nothing but flamebait drivel...watch it reach the top story like their other "articles".

kalebgray925313d ago

the 360 has failed and lost a lot of money ..... the correct business thing to do is to pull out

Immortal Kaim5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

I'm sure the Japanese market is part of Microsoft's business strategy, the costs of penetrating this market must not outweigh the benefits if Microsoft continues its effort to capture the market.

And, yes the last four stories from this "site" have all been created to encourage the sort of fanboy conflicts I'm sure will occur.

MURKERR5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

under the noses of SE (lets be honest SE love big pay offs) to get ff13 to launch in japan with the ps3 unfortunately its completely game over come december 2009.

evrfighter5313d ago

Japan USED to be the benchmark for determining the success of a game or a console.

That tradition has long since shifted to the U.S.

curse those handsome devils.

LastDance5313d ago

haha ... "used" .... your ridiculous statement was void before you even finished it.

AKNAA5313d ago

MS should just call it quits now in Japan before the release of FF13 this dec... It's just gonna be like killing something thats already dead...

Syronicus5313d ago

Oh that's right. They're the ones struggling to keep up with the weekly PS2 sales... I forgot.

gaffyh5313d ago

@1.1 - Damn man, why did LO sell so little?? It is one of the best JRPGs on that list.

Myst5313d ago

Wow kind of surprised at Lost Odyssey, In my opinion it's the best one out of the list you provided. Kind of saddened to hear that :(.

Keowrath5313d ago

Gaffyh agreed! Wow! 40,000 copies sold??? That's really not good. I know a few people who have the game and they really enjoyed it.

Guess 360 owners don't want JRPG's and then you have the PS3 owners who are begging for em. (Square, you really screwed yourself over this generation lol) At least we're starting to see them released now.

Incidently, anyone know how much Fallout3, Oblivion and Mass Effect sold on the 360?

I'm not usually one for counting sales on any console but I'm interested to see the difference in demand of WRPG's and JRPG's on the 360.

SCThor5313d ago

"What's even worst is most of the aforementioned games will soon be available for the PS3 with Tales of Vesperia already out for Sony's console with that version selling over 140,000 copies in the first day and 217,000 in its first week out, totally outstripping the life-to-date sales of the Xbox 360 version."

It clearly shows that some japanese only bought the xbox360 because they neded their "RPG-fix" and didn't got another choice, since Halo, Gears, etc don't appeal to them.

ultimolu5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

Um...yes?

Lol @ the disagrees. Seriously, one million in four years is BAD. The 360 had all these rpgs and couldn't even make a dent in Japan? That's just hilarious.

And v1c1ous, love how you bring up the PSP, a handheld! Lol!

v1c1ous5313d ago

well?

or how about the PSP?

Face Palm5313d ago

And PS3 slim sold 1 million units in M$'s territory in 1 week :)

ABizzel15313d ago

I had to readdress my statements, because I use to be one of the people who say Yes, and I still agree, but that was from a consumer stand point. However, from a business standpoint any sell is a profit, but I think they shouldn't focus their marketing as much in Japan, seeing how their earlier attempts which were great attempts, failed.

gamesR4fun5313d ago

especially lo

ps list is off the article

I dunno why they sold so little well other than piracy maybe...

ChrisW5313d ago

It is very exciting to see our enemy fail so hard in our allied country, Japan.

We are pleased that Intel states that at Toys R Us, the shelves where the Xbox360s once were, are now filled with the glorious PS3! This transition took place about 2 or 3 months ago with the slow yet absolute extermination of all Xbox360 paraphernalia and propaganda. Thus in turn was a major victory!

However, it is still saddening that war fronts in major retailers like BigCamera have not completely vanquished the enemy. Also counter-intel reports that major electronic districts like Akihabara in Tokyo and OsuKannon in Nagoya still show a certain amount of support for the Xbox360. This however is nothing to be alarmed about. We will prevail!

Hail Fuhrer Kaz Hirai and the Sony Socialist Republic!

NateNater5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

You know if the title mentioned PS3 sales being bad somewhere and someone said Sony needs to give up, this article would have hit 1000 degrees already. But because its xbox, so many people here are PS3 fanboys (including me lol), its ok to put down M$. N4G is just littered with Sony lovers.

But I really do think M$ need to rethink their entire strategy in Japan. Selling 1 mil consoles after 4 years is not a good thing. Especially in a country where gaming is of great importance. They don't necessarily need to stop selling their console there, but instead just provide something that appeals more to Japanese gamers.

Raoh5313d ago

I agree with the low sales of lost odyssey

it is one of the best rpg's this generation..

the low sales to me speaks more in volume of the common xbox gamer..

they are not rpg gamers.. which is why some rpg's sell based on marketing and hype but they are more the halo/call of duty crowd

I know plenty of gamers that are xbox supporters that dont care about final fantasy 13, they never liked final fantasy series and claim to never will, but are happy that it is no longer exclusive in america just cause they hate sony.. but are they excited the get a chance to play ffxiii? nope not at all.

CaptainKratos5313d ago

and they said the 360 was doomed.....

table5313d ago

"Should sony have pulled out the first 2 years of ps3 release?"

PS3 is the 3rd fastest selling console ever...

ThanatosDMC5313d ago

Guess, it's cold in Japan... ::wink wink::

darthv725313d ago

how many did the original xbox console sell in japan before it was killed off?

vhero5313d ago

You people are thinking of the smaller picture they lose it in Japan but gain it back in the states its partly why they have stayed on top. Getting those exclusives you can only get from Japanese developers who are not gonna make the games if their is no console for sale in Japan as that would just be stupid. MS don't care about losing to Japan as they are making it back from US and Europe. Their plan was never to beat Nintendo and Sony in Japan it was to get great games from Japanese developers and get a foothold for the future.

siyrobbo5313d ago

I read this as 360 sold 1 million in 4 hrs, i thought, wtf? why? then i relised

lol

KingME5313d ago

Step 1: Check to see who the article was intended for.
Step 2: Check to see if the comments being made are by the people that the article was claimed to be written for.
Step 3: Check to see if said commenters are making negative or positive comments about the subject (Especially if the commenter is not part of the intended audience.)
Step 4: Mark as flamebait and report accordingly.
Step 5: Sigh then move on after noticing that the MODs appear to be fanboys also.

pixelsword5313d ago

...and the whole "ODST outsold Killzone2 in one day" article not flamebait?

That's the problem: either eliminate all sources of flamebait, or accept all. There is no middle ground.

KingME5313d ago

ODST outselling KZ2 in day one "IS" a flamebait article. The point is, why are we continuing to approve this type of crap.

pixelsword5313d ago

I don't think I've approved an article like this before, but I'm not certain, but if I did, I don't think I did so once I realized what a flamebait article was.

Elaine Benes5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

I think MS could care less about Japan.
I think their focus is on the US 90% and EU 10%.

They could give up. And their accounting team wouldnt even notice the loss.
They would just keep stacking the money piles higher and higher, so Daddy Bill, and Uncle Steve can swim in them. :)

You know what guys? I really miss that cartoon, "Duck Tales". What were thier names? Huey, Dewey, and Luey?

4Sh0w5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

It states Lost Odyssey (life-to-date: 104,417) not 40,000= proof some people dont read the articles on n4g.

Why quit, I don't think anybody in their right mind would honestly say they thought micro would win(lead) in Japan at any point. Also the notion that bringing jrpg's to 360 has been some wild spending spree thats holding up dev of other games is silly, who's to say how much those games cost microsoft and would they just have put another 10mil here, 10mil, there, 10mil extra Halo3 advertising with Halo Gatorade, 10mil extra on some launch party etc, etc, microsoft has a huge budget but not paying to bring a few less jrpg's to the 360 doesn't mean it would have went to creating game x.

Also microsoft isn't failing in Japan, they've offered plenty of Japanese centric games with their jrpg offerings, however its obvious Japan is not as receptive to a foreign console as other places and still many see microsoft as the outsider. Thats a tough hill to climb, it takes baby steps, and the fact is 360 while being far behind ps3 and waaay farther behind wii has already done better than its predeccesor. Thats not saying much but IT IS progress, and consistent healthy sales in Japan will take time. Also its worth noting that several of ps3 jrpg's while having big first weeks also had significant drops the latter weeks with many no longer on the charts outside of 3 weeks. Yeah, there are a few ps3 jrpgs that did well but some game like Valkyria Chronicles didn't do much better than 360 games in LTD sales either, what are the LTD sales of Folklore and all the ps3 jrpg's 'cause japan hasn't exactly brought alot of console games this gen anyway. Look at the all the top Japanese dev's willingness to lineup and support Natal, I think in part its because they feel comfortable that microsoft is willing to stick it out in Japan, the type of thinking that says microsoft should "give up" in Japan is very short-sighted when you look at the big picture.

XxZxX5313d ago

give it Dewey, you won't make it.

tee_bag2425313d ago

Quite clearly Microsoft do not understand the Japanese market. Perhaps its the lack of variety in Genre on the 360

jden285313d ago

SORRY BUT NO, M$ shouldn't give up what the slanted author of this thing fails to mention is that the original xbox sold only 470,000 units in it's 4 yr life in japan. So a 240% increase in sales in BUSINESS is a positive. Now imagine if there next console sells 240% better than the life time sales of the X360 in 4yrs thats over 2.5 million and that my dear fanboyz is what MS is looking forward to.

The Lazy One5312d ago

"this very reliable source" = wikipedia?

That said, no they shouldn't. They already have the product. Their going to keep selling them everywhere else. It would be near idiotic to not have the consoles available in japan.

Lich1205312d ago

From a business stand point, pulling out would be a terrible idea, unless MS doesn't plan on releasing there next console in Japan. If they pulled out now they would be screwing over the people who do enjoy the 360 there. Those people would not purchase the next MS console.

Also, lets keep in mind that Japan's population is about 1/3 the size of the US so the equivalent sales in the US would be if the 360 had sold 3mil to date (based on population size). Obviously this is still not great, but it's no drop in the bucket. Im sure MS wishes they were doing much better but its no reason to pull out since they are still be backed by the US market.

mebob5312d ago

The Japanese expect the best quality for their hard earned money and this is proof of it :D

Natal is the Last Hope for Japan

MURKERR5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

because motion controls ae nothing more than a gimmick which gets tiresome fairly quickly, so what makes you believe a console that barely outsells ps2 by a couple hundred units is suddenly going to ignite by bringing its own version of motion controls three years after the wii?

edit: instead of blindly pressing disagree why not attempt at answering my question? my god n4g is full of immature hardened fanboys where logic hurts them.......its a piece of plastic entertainment, microsoft are not paying you royalties your PAYING them....think about it

beardpapa5313d ago (Edited 5313d ago )

silly, that was Star Ocean 4.

@ Murkerr, you fail to realize that Microsoft successfully got millions of people paying $42-50 a year to play games online, while also getting to enjoy using Twitter, Facebook, or Netflix only if they pay for Gold subscription. They also successfully managed to get these very same people to watch advertisements in their dashboard - because it's the only correct thing to do, give your customers more advertisements for things they paid for. They also managed to successfully get millions more to adopt the 360 brand despite the RRoD fiasco with their 3 yr warranty plan incentive. They tested and tried selling overpriced accessories, and successfully concluded that people are willing to pay those prices to get the best gaming experience. They successfully advertised a Windows 7 campaign featuring a cute little Asian girl that was intelligent enough at that age, to create a movie or powerpoint slide using impressive & positive comments from review sites such as Cnet. She's definitely a PC. You also fail to realize that Microsoft has successfully managed to get by being a powerful [yet dirty] business company and it's definitely okay for them to do the things they do because... it's simply just business.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood3h ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.
