The poll is a statistic. Believe it or not companies actually use polls to gauge how well their products are received. For example, this is very simple but say you ask 100 people if they like Halo or not. 60 say they do and 40 say they don't. You could then say that given these result, 600 out 1000 people would say yes and only 400 would say no. Off course, it's not that simple but you get the point.

It's not a fact - it's a poll result. I don't believe the 54% any more than I believe the 10% PS3 failure rate.

If you believe the 54% 360 failure rate, you also have to accept the PS3's 10% failure rate (which is more than 3X the standard consumer electronics average of 3%).

I'd like to ask PS3 fans (who believe in the poll) something - Is it OK to be bad (as far as reliability is concerned) simply because you can point to a competitor and say "They're worse"?

I don't believe 54% either...I think it's higher because some people with broken systems don't want to tell the truth since they have spent a lot of money on it. The first time my 360 broke was 2 weeks before Halo 3 came out, I was pissed and worried. The second time it broke which was the same month but a year later, I almost didn't care much. I think it depends on when your 360 breaks, plus knowing that you have a live subscription plays a big part in why people keep coming back.

-Well it must be something we learned from dating the ps2, sony denied all the violence until they were sued in court. Still they never compensated the many victims of their faulty consoles. For some, like myself, Live is a legitimate reason for me to keep my 360. I buy all the exclusives on PS3 and I could really live off all of them for the rest of the generation, but there's an exception.

Live is literally the reason why I buy all my multiplatform games on my 360. Just how everything and everyone is alive and integrated. It's so seamless.

This is an example what happens when I turn on my 360:
-I turn on my 360 it boots up to NXE
-I scroll up once and see who's online.
-I join a party already made up of 4 of my friends
-We chat up for a little bit playing individual games
-Someone sends an invite to the entire party to Call of Duty 4
-We all accept it and we all join his party in CoD4 within seconds.

That is why Live will continually get my money until PSN offers the same, not to mention that almost everyone on Live has a mic if I ever need to play alone with randoms.

No doubt in my mind, if PSN had party chat alone, I'd probably buy more of my multiplatform games on the PS3.

Don't get me wrong, I play my PS3 and 360 equally, (inFamous is amazing) but Live is well worth the admission and why I keep my 360.

I'm definitely not saying PSN is a terrible service, there are several things I like about PSN such as dedicated servers as you mentioned, Home, gaming sharing, etc.

I believe that I'm getting my money's worth paying for Live. That's my opinion. If you think paying 7 bucks a month is too much, that's fine by me. I can't tell a man how to spend his cold earned cash.

Personally, my gamercard represents myself when I game, I can't give that up. My gaming history, achievements. Party chat is also a big draw for myself, my brother lives in Alberta now for his job, we talk and play occasional games through Live quite regularly.

1. theres no way to tell if the people voteing actually own a 360, its very easy to vote negativly against a console you dont like, and going by N4G theres alot of people on here that are only too happy to make a fuss about MS.

2. people that have had issues with the console are more likely to give feedback, ive never had a problem but i fully understand the frustration of those that have.

NewZealander, great comment! I agree completely. Such a survey can never be reliable. That's like looking at user reviews on Metacritic and expecting to get an honest assessment of a game. It isn't going to happen. As we have seen, fanboys are all too happy and willing to mark down an exclusive from the opposing console in hopes of making it look bad. What makes anybody think they wouldn't do something similar in a survey?

The Xbox 360 has not got a failure rate of 54%, that's a ridiculous thing to say. The last failure rate measurement which was in 2008 before the NXLE, was confirmed to be below 16 percent. How the hell can the percentage suddenly rise by 38% when it’s been going downhill ever still?

Regardless, if this 51% were to be true then your Xbox 360 would have half the chance of breaking every time you use it. It’s utterly preposterous and completely wrong! I had an Xbox 360 for two years and it broke once! Yes, many Sony Gangs are quick to remind us that the failure WAS high in the past but at least Microsoft fixed the hardware, allow full game downloads and gave us a 3 year warranty.

Being honest I'm still on my first 360 for almost 2 years now. However, I feel it's just a ticking time bomb at this point so I've been constantly buying all my multiplatform games on PS3. I've also been encouraging all my friends constantly to pick up PS3s and about 1 or 2 remain till that's all settled, then I'll always have at least one person I like playing games with me.

I could see though how the 3% for PS3 is now 10% considering the sales have gone up and up and more are out there to have a chance to slip up. However the same can be said for the 360 that more and more are out there and that's why I can believe the 50%.

At the end of the day though 3% vs 33% or 10% vs over 50%...it doesn't take a math wiz to realize either way the 360 is a bad move if you actually want to have a gaming console that won't break down on you.

2 years and I have been fortunate to not have had any problems with my XBox 360 (*knocks on wood*) but when I'm on my PS3, I miss being on XBox Live. I miss my friends, I miss party chat, I miss the UI. XBox Live is the reason I have an XBox 360. 2nd, how have M$ avoided a recall?
They bought everyone off cheap with an extended warranty. Any company that goes from 3 months to a year and then 3 years on the warranty, know there product is seriously lacking quality wise. Thats just common sense. Has anyone seen Fight Club. If AxB-X (or something like that) cost less than the total of a recall, THEY DONT DO ONE. So spend a billion for warrantys and look like heroes, or recall 10 million consoles and admit you're shonky. You do the maths.

Finally, Live is not my drawcard. I know you guys all love it, I can take it or leave it. I think the reason people keep coming back is because of your own games library. I've invested thousands. My Xbox dies and I turn my back on it, all those games are useless. Its either sell them for a pitance or get a new machine. Thats why I get all my multiplats on a machine I trust. So gradually my Xbox library wont be so important I cant walk away from it. (Actually I'm there now, but I would miss Tenchu.) Probably alot of other feel like this. I think the case of these video games should be almost the size of a PC desktop to make sure it has real good ventination inside, real powerfull coolers and for that you got to get used to soem noise.

My 60g PS3 had major graphic bugs after 9 months(ok I left it turned on 24/7 doing folding) of use and some games such Oblivion had huge black squares in the middle of the screen.

then I bought myself a Ps380G that suddenlly poofed the motherboard and It had the MB changed and so far all working ok.

Anyways these video games don't survive well to summer time on most contries( even in Europe).

The 54% failure rate is a stupid figure because the launch 360`s failure rate was much higher than 54% (100% failure rate for the people I know) But everyone I know who has a newer console (anything with HDMI) has had no problems except 1 person who kept getting disc read errors and that was only after a few days so warranty covered it.

Never will I defend MS on RROD because the launch 360 failure rate is just outrageous. But at the same time Im not going to tell people not to buy a 360 because the failure rates now seem to be at an acceptable level for an electronics device.

Just completing my post above about problems that are occour because of overheating inside a video game.

My Ps3 does real low noise at the beginning but later on around after 7 or so months of extended use the coolers starts to make quite a huge noise.
I wonder if the vg had these coolers running at max speed since the begining it would make the consoel to last longer ?

I know that if the coolers run at lower speed they make less noise and save more energy but then the life time of the components gets lowered.
Am I wrong?

As far as I remember, in a PC desktop the coolers always run near max speed, always makes lots of noise and the reason for that is to make sure the components are all cooled up .
Coolers in a PC don;'t wait for summer time to start to rotate faster like we see in video game consoles on this gen.

And it just keeps right on selling. That's because it isn't as big of an inconvenience as people make it out to be. Your console goes away for a week and comes back. Most often for free, and for 3 years. Ask the owners of the 10% of PS3 owners what happens after that first year when their console dies.

Having had extensive abuse from Sony after my first PS2 died from DRE's less than 4 months after I bought it, I'm here to tell you that the 360's repair process is infinitely better than what I experienced back then. At least it didn't take a class action lawsuit for Microsoft to acknowledge that they screwed up.

For me.. I had a 360 that lasted almost 2 years before I was hit with RROD (you can check my 360 voice blog, youll never see a gap of no playing due to waiting for a coffin for its first year and 9 months of life).. so naturally by the time it did RRoD, I had a slew of games that I wasnt willing to get rid of.. so I dealt with a repair here, messed up dvd drive there, then my final RRoD almost a year after my 2nd repair before I said forget it, and sold it without a hard drive to some chap for the same price as an arcade.

I lost out on some money given the amount I initially paid for it but, I've been putting my Jasper to work since January and havent had the slightest hiccup since January.. plus theres still a lot of games coming for 360 that I've been dying to play so I just couldnt give that up.

I'll stick to my PS360 combo (can't go wrong with this IMO)

My personal failure rate is 50%. I've owned two, one died, my failure rate is 50 percent. All of my friends are at LEAST on their 3rd 360 or worse. So, for m,ost of them who had 2 die and is playing their 3rd, their personal failure rate is 66%. For the mathematically challenged, 2/3 = 66.66%. I have one or two friends who are on their 4th, which takes them up to the 75% personal failure rate.

When you break it down to PFRs(personal failure rates), it is not so hard to believe.

By the way, didn't all of IGN's 10 or more launch consoles all die? That would put them @ 100%!!! I am not really concerned about the poll; because polls can be tampered with which can make them inaccurate. The thing that makes me a believer is my own personal history with the console. I am a lifetime gamer that was willing to bear the elements to get a sneak peek at this current generation of gaming. I owned 5 games before I even owned the console. I take extremely good care of my belongings; ensuring that my consoles received all the TLC one could provide. However, I quickly realized that something was afoul after my second hardware failure. My Live friends all thought I was crazy and dismissed my claims. Soon, the "virus" seemed to spread like we were all residents of Raccoon City. Long story (still kinda long), I went through 6 systems...1 I had destroyed in frustration. I had fun on the system while it lasted, but I am no fool. The greatest software in the world is null and void if the hardware won't play it. I am no fanboy, but I will NEVER spend another dime with a Microsoft gaming console again. Whatever the correct percentage of failure rates on the 360 are they are far too high.
I have a launch day PS3 still going strong
I bought my first elite about 18 months ago and Ive had 3 break on me so far. I'm currently without one because Microsoft want 100euro to fix mine (I got 2 lights instead of 3) None of the breakages where through my neglect so I'm too stubborn to pay them to repair it. been 5 months without it now.

(and we all know the numbers for all 3 consoles were heavily inflated) this site has gone from fanboy fights to and all out sh!tstorm of "Sony is dying! the PS3 slim can't save them!" vs "54% failure rate!"

Seriously...fvcking drop it. I'm fine with your little squabbled but when every single day now the site is covered from head to toe with this trash, it's really considering making me (and I'm sure a lot of other people) want to avoid it all together.

If you have a XBOX 360 thats failed you have choices and you know what they are,if you have a PS3 have the same choices, PS3 fans stop moaning and groaning if you like PS3 then good so be it. But I like xbox 360 failing or not at least MS is standing up to the task and is getting better with the baby of the bunch and if PS3 was as good as you PS3 fans say then why is that xbox still have the most people? even a lot of your PS3 fan club own a xbox 360 an have the nerve to be on here crying about how the PS3 is better but logging more time on their 360, stop the crying and game or leave it alone,because thats what I and MILLIONS of other XBOX fans are going to do.

No matter what the fail rate is, they haven't fix anything an Sony has drop the old models because of their fail rate and this kind of shows that Sony is willing to show they mess up.

I been threw 4 an will a buy another? yeah -_- sad but true an Halo is the only reason I need a 360 and it sucks that its not on PC anymore.
