Ok, I'm about to get flamed here, but.....personally, I've always enjoyed Splinter Cell more than Metal Gear. I've had quite a fun time with SC games in the past. However, MGS never drew me in. I played a lil bit (granted not much at all), but I used to watch my cousin play the games all the time. Just never drew me in. So I think personally, yes I would have more fun with Conviction (which DOES look awesome btw), than I would MGS4. I did play the demo for MGS4 though (just to give it one more try) and I don't see where the "easier" comment comes from. I never even played MGS games much and had no problem with playing it.

That being said (before I start losing bubbles for liking SC and never really caring about MGS lol), how in the world does HHG get away with this stuff? He is an absolutely atrocious writer. I mean we're talking borderline illiterate here. We really should demand more from our "media". Truly. Of course it only helps this poor excuse for a journalist when his buddies come out of the woodworks to approve anything and everything he writes.

Personally i never was into MGS. Ive tried the original it never stuck and then ive rented MGS2 and beat the first level and never went any farther. It is hard for fanboys to admit there is some faults with their precious. And i for one do not have a single problem saying MGS 4 was average at best and the controls was just horrid (from the period i played of it). I disliked the game so much after the retarded monkey smoking a cig scene i just quit and played no farther. And do not get me started on multiplayer, i gameflyed it about 1 month ago to check it out. After deciding i was not a big fan of single player i would check out the multiplayer which was 2 hours and 47 mins later i finally was able to play my first game of multiplayer. Then i ejected it and sent it back that same day.

As a guy who really hated MGS3; I was skeptical about part four. I loved 1 and 2, but part 3 was really bad for me. So I would say I'm not an MGS fanboy. But MGS4 was so good, that no ten minute playthrough of the game made by GOD, could possibly give you the impression that it is better than MGS4.

I didn't pre-own MGS4 and didn't go out and buy it until I read the first review, which was, MGS4 most amazing game EVER!(from a reputable site) And after reading everything he said I went out that day and grabbed it. MGS4 most amazing game EVER, is a setup for disappointment, and yet, the game managed to impress.

Everything just came together in that game, story, graphics, tech, level design, weapons(like 150) and this will go on and on if I don't stop now. And the nostalgia just destroyed all.

Don't like to say this about anything but I thin this is just for the hits. MGS4 is inferior because SCC is easier to control somtimes? Is that what caused the fuss?

Firstly the controls in MGS4 were pretty tight and also don't forget that this is a game about OLD Snake who ISN'T as agile as he once was so to expect super agility would be silly and if implemented would, in fact, detract from the verisimilitude of MGS4 representing an aging man.

Secondly, MG games are nistorically a little complicared in control terms-they just aren't noob games and had they made it too newcomer friendly it would have lost much of what made the series great.

Fact is SCC is more similar, from what I've seen, this time round to U2 and I feel that may be the actual reason, ar an element in Ubi moving release to next year-to avoid any comparisons to ND's game.

Because of all these points and a HHG history of inflammatory articles I have to wonder just how much this was driven by a desire to press both sides fanboy buttons as he's ignored pretty much all the history which made both series so great in the first place and this makes the whole stroy seem very suspect, imo.

You should probably play at least one of the games being compared before you give an opinion. Most rational people would actually play both... You're judging games on VIDEO, and I get the distinct impression that you've never played MGS4. The gameplay in MGS4 was awesome.

I don't think I've ever played a game that was so complex but intuitive. I find it so much more satisfying when I pull off a complex CQC move that involves a series of button presses to make it feel like I'm actually doing it. Go and play MGS4 before whining about phantom complainers. Most people are annoyed that HHG brought up MGS at all, when really the old Splinter Cell could have been compared instead.

The problem I have w/ Splinter Cell is that Ubisoft has a history of churning out titles year after year until the series just got played out - they needed to take a break w/ it after chaos theory.

As far as MGS goes, every entry in the series is pretty solid. I liked the way in MGS4 they had 5 stages throughout the course of the game that put a different spin on the gameplay, plus the boss fights are top notch, and there is nothing like the octo-camo.

Splinter Cell:Conviction looks promising, but I really can't tell what's so different about it. Plus, it looks kinda cheap how you can pop out from behind a door and automatically kill like 5 dudes.

metal gear 4 was a much more easier game too play than others which is true but the things you can do in splinter cell is much easier to pull of in that game i guess cause of the control scheme and the way it responds to the things you do. you have to play it too really fully understand where i'm coming from. Mainly in splinter the action is so much more streamlined with the configuration like most traditional 3rd person action games. metal gear is much more complex easier than before but still way more complex than what splinter cell provides in-terms of gameplay you guys

Dude, people aren't even arguing the gameplay of Splinter Cell. What people are annoyed is that you just haveeeeeeeeeeeee to compare it to MGS.

If Splinter Cell Conviction's gameplays so great, people will see it themselves. You don't have to say it's "better than MGS" just to make a point.

For example, if Forza 3 was really the definitive racing game of this generation, then Turn 10 didn't need to repeat it five million times and let the game do the talking. Instead they banter and downplay Gran Turismo over and over again just to make themselves feel better.

Now I'm not knocking on Splinter Cell, infact I'm looking foward to it as much as Uncharted 2, God of War and other big titles.

But the way you just havvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve to knock on another title to prove a point shows how smart you really are. Which doesn't seem to be the case at all.

Metal Gear a movie ? Pff is that all you can say ? At least the metal gear series have a storyline not like Splinter Cell...
I took 24 hours to beat it on extreme and the total length of the cutscenes is about 5 or 6 hours (a pretty long movie then), maybe a little more with the codec scenes. So that leaves at least 17 hours of gameplay.

The difference is : MGS Gameplay 60 % MGS story 40 %

Splinter Cell Gameplay: 80% SC "story" 20%

i always knew the splinter cell series beat out the MGS series in terms of gameplay. hell, splinter cell series runs laps around the MGS series for being a "tactical espionage" type game.

but fans of both (myself included) go into MGS and Splinter cell for different reasons.

i enjoy splinter cell for the gameplay mechanics, and i enjoy MGS for the intricate storylines and characters. and random hella weird logic.

so in a weird way, while splinter cell and MGS series are the same genre, both are so unique in their own aspects you don't see them in the same light.

I agree. I buy MGS for the story, and for the characters. I buy SC for the gameplay. I thought that was pretty true for most people.

MGS has better and more interesting bad guys, and makes me care about Snake and the situation he's in, and makes me think about politics and war. SC makes me have a great time dealing with terrorists or whatever they are; sure, Sam and co are a bit cookie-cutter, but that's okay, he's fun to play and I can button through the cutscenes to avoid the really cliche bits.

On the other hand, MGS does have some really epic boss battles. SC has nothing to match The End, or the Ocelot fight, or the Rex vs Ray battle-- I'm not sure how much of the epicness of those fights was from better gameplay and how much was from the emotional investment, but SC hasn't matched it so far...

In MGS4 you're in a battlefield filled with lots of things to interact with and the environments are so big that it leave you lots of choices to approach the different situations. For example: you can help side A but then side B turns against you and vice versa or you can just ignore all and go all Rambo or take your time and move stealthily around the stages. And there's still more... Like the fact that Snake is now an old man and you have to consider his lower stamina and other things that are directly affecting his body. This little details are what set apart the MGS franchise from the bunch. MGS it's unique, Splinter Cell it's generic like your usual spy based movie of James Bond.

HHG probably got exited for Conviction because the game seems more action oriented and he seems to enjoy this kind of games more while MGS it is more like... Passive?

It has it's merits, but none of the examples given really "trump" anything in MGS4, if anything they are equivalents.

-I would compare the interrogation moments in SC:C to the end fight sequence between Snake and Liquid Oscelot (in control, but augmented for THAT specific sequence).

-Splinter's use of shadows to Snake's camoflauge and subversion with making noises and distractions and so on.

-MGS4 auto aim, Splinter's assisted aim/stealth kill thingy

-If you strictly want to talk about which game has MORE to do (more gameplay) MGS4 is packed to the brim, so until this title's release, I have seen nothing to compare to the sheer number of things possible in MGS4.

That's all for now, either way it looks really promising; there are a few things in Splinter that I would have liked to see in MGS4, the crawling outside of the building on ledges, window sills, et cetera. I know MGS4 had to keep with MGS tradition, but I think Kojima should have parted with the 1,2,3, CQC mechanic and gone for something more fluid for the basic hand to hand stuff, but that's just me.

First when it was announced that it was only coming to Xbox 360 that shocked the industry considering the previous game came out on both platforms. There was also talk about the Playstation 3 not being able to handle Splinter Cell: Conviction cause of technical issues, but ubisoft cleared that rumor up fast. 1. The interrogation gameplay in Splinter Cell is so easy and deep. Walking around with your character, talking to others to get answers, smashing their face in a door, or ramming their head into glass I mean the way it feels and the way it’s represented is on another level from previous games i had played.

2. Movement around the environment is so much smoother considering your climbing up poles, shimmering across ledges, running, hiding, dodging is so much simpler and looks more fluid in-game which makes the over gameplay quality higher.

3. The more stealth kills you do the more perks you get throughout out the game to do other moves and abilities which is incredible. This makes playing in stealth mode not just an option but a significant bonus to the game because it opens up other ways to kill enemies and it rewards Sam Fisher with new abilities to help certain situations you encounter during gameplay

4. You don’t only use Sam Fisher, you’ll get to play as some of the pedestrians in some of the levels (i don't know what the hell you ment with this paragraph so i took a guess)

5. The unique way that you can draw an enemy to confuse them is amazing. Using shadows to make them think your there but really your setting up a trap for them

GTAIV story missions were pretty boring, except for a few, took me 23 hours to beat. There also weren't military in the game anymore Way less cheats than previous games (No riot mode, WTF!). Less weapons

The problem is people wont admit when something sucks. Its a form of denial. they wanna think they have the best game that was ever made. What they need to realize is that GTA is old. They arent giving people what they want, they're giving people what the creators want you to have. Honestly all i can see they did is give GTA and graphics upgrade, a mediocre story we've seen 100 times in older titles. The same missions and nothing new. Atleast GTA:SA was new. SR1 didnt reinvent the wheel it gave us what we loved about the genre and what we wanted. They made the game more personal, they didnt say here is nico bellic and his story, they said here is YOUR story. Then they gave us a much livelier place to play in. Hell i played SR1 for months and occasionally go back to it from time to time.

look its no contest, SR2 will be more fun than GTA 4,'FUN' is the keyword there, but none the less GTA iv its still a great game, graphically, sound-wise, story e.t.c, the only thing is SR2 is going to give a real gamer, much much more fun, unquestionably, lets contest features shall we:

If Sammy was such a bad a$$ then tell me, why did ubisoft decide to go back to the drawing boards near the release of MGS4? Why didnt they release SCC then? Its simple because SCC wouldve gotten MURDERED by MGS4. So ubisoft made a smart decision & delayed & took what they seen from MGS4 & made it better a few years later.

I never really got the chance to play previous Splinter Cell games.
I have always loved my MGS series and enjoy the slow pace in MGS than that of FPS.

There aren't alot of 360 games that I am interested in.....but this one definately interests me. I love the stealthy style games, this is why Batman Arkham Asylum too me looks so sweet.

Whether or not Splinter Cell is better than MGS will only tell, but as good as MGS is. I'm ready for the next installment of stealth action.

the article mentioned some of the features that Splinter Cell has to offer... what about what things that Metal Gear Solid 4 has and Splinter Cell does not?

examples:

+ Soldiers Emotions (rage, fear, etc)
+ Huge set of items and weapons. There are even special type of bullets that can drug a soldier (laughter bullets anyone?)
+ Snake's tools (Cameo, Radar, Solid Eye, Sound wave detector etc)
+ Gekkos
+ Various types of Gameplay situations. Sometime you are trailing a person, you are on vehicle shooting an army, you are trailing footsteps in a jungle, sneaking in a heated war between factions, PILOTING A MG, boss battles etc...
+ The Re-playability where you can achieve ranks and special items.
+ 5 Totally different and unique environments that makes you feel like you are in a sequel (no noticeable pattern in maps design)
+ Guards A.I is superior in guarding, searching and attacking together (specially on high difficulty) and we are yet to see how does Splinter Cell A.I works this time.

and that's why people must stop comparing SC with MGS. It is clearly that MG is on a whole other path in term of gameplay (as MG subtitle say it is a Tactical Action Game). Assassin Creed and Hitman games are more comparable to SC in term of gameplay.

I understand what you are saying, but still Met. Gear is still a step slower in the stealth department and depending on the person will vary. So, lets hold judgment until we play both games.

Now this is my opinion so take it as you like. Splinter cell is an all out better Stealth. In the past, Splinter cells character movements were always better scaling fences, wall splits etc. The element of Stealth was a lot better also, the A.I relied on sound walking/running. Your shadow from light source, or the loss of sight due to compromising the light source. Then you have the lock picking , hacking, safe cracking, and bugging mini games.

The gadgets through the history of Splinter cell have been small, but have added more to the store and game play where as MGS had a large amount of weapons, but really didn't do anything but add eye candy to the game.

Now here is where MGS shines, it has a story line that people become fascinated in, and if you have been following from its nintendo hey day you would want to know the out come of over a decade of play. One problem is, Metal Gear hasn't had a game play over haul it's still the same stand, crouch, crawl,
hide in the locker type of play. Does that make it a bad thing, for some yest, but for the loyal fans No.

I think its perfectly fine to compare the two because it still falls under the line of stealth, if you have to run and hide from enemies, or break any line of sight its pretty much a stealth. It's not like SC is a first Person shooter, and MGS a 3rd person.

I personally hope SC blows MGS4 out the water, so this way I can get a ground breaking MGS5 and beyond. Same Goes for SC

In mGS4 you go against spys, different army factions. giant robots, super soldiers, machines, cyborg ninjas, humans with wolverines healing factor etc. splinter cell convistions is boring in comparison and with no real compelling story in the trilogy which makes it fail. This game actually looks pretty good but to compare it to MGS is ridicolous. MGS is on a different level. Every MGS game has scored above 90 in meta and sold lots of copies ( I really don't care about sales nor meta but I just thought it was worth mentioning). Splinter Cell 1 was ok and Chaos Theory was really good, but the rest of the games was just plain boring and crappy. I didn't even knew why I did the missions since you only got a crappy briefring. Being that I have been a gamer for the past 24 years I can appreciate another person's opinion. It is not until that opinion is conveyed as fact that I begin to have a problem. Splinter Cell, in some eyes, is the clear winner in terms of accessability but Metal Gear is deemed as one of the greatest games ever made. So to say that SC beats out MG in gameplay can only have one objective, to pit gamers against each other in yet another pointless debate.

Look Splinter Cell is all about making you feel as though you are really engaging in the act of being a spy. Metal Gear on the other hand takes a more cinematic approach to the espionage genre delivering a deeper experience by venturing down multiple avenues making its appeal stand out amongst a wider audience. Both games have a great track record but to say that one is better than the other shows that there is a lack of understanding in terms of what each game's purpose is.

The original titles were so hardcore stealth - game over if found and very linear world - that the gameplay "idea" was nearly that of the old Atari classic "Pitfall." Think about it. You have a roving spotlight/swinging rope that you must pass at just the right time or you are spotted/eaten by a crocodile, and if you are spotted/eaten, you will have to replay a significant section of game.

Metal Gear, however, has always been about options. In the opening shadow moses infiltration of Metal Gear Sold (PS1), the player is given a large outdoor area with a heli-pad at its center; roving spotlights, armed guards patrol, and security cameras keep overwatch. Tasked with entering the base, the player can take a direct sneaking route without being seen, take out and hide the guards, find some hidden flash grenades and create a distraction to slip by, or just run like an idiot through the center and hope for the best. All of these tactics can work, and the entire game is played in this fashion.

Even though MGS4 had more action-stealth elements in it - borrowing cover mechanics from Gears of War - the option is still there to play through without being seen or killing a single person.

If Splinter Cell has managed to clean up its failed Action-Stealth mechanics and offer some player choice, then I welcome it to the club. But don't think that it has dethroned Solid Snake because it has played catchup pretty well.

Defending HHG, I have so many times but now I will no longer do so. First He and Torrence from the BitBag.com are flooding garbage into this site in order to get hits. Both are fanboys to the max, Tor from Bitbag.com is a 360 fanboy and HHG a PS3 fanboy. Metal Gear gives me the best story (still in awe at how Chapter 3 ended in MGS4)

Splinter Cell gives me the gameplay that I find a bit better than Metal Gears (especially Chaos Theory and the original)

Wasn't MGS4 the reason why Splinter Cell Conviction was scrapped and sent back to the drawing board? MGS4 was rumored to be why this game was delayed. Word is that they got a glimpse of MGS4 and decided to send much of their work to the delete bin in order to work on improvements. - This could all be rumors, but this is what I read or heard somewhere.

Listen, gamers win because both of these games continue to exist. Hopefully, this competition will be favorable to us so we can experience better and better games. It is a win win situation for me, because any future MGS game and Splinter Cell game is my cup of tea anyways. It is VERY hard to admit that you like one and not like the other. You may prefer one over the other, but hey, if these are your types of games, chances are you can't go wrong playing them both.

will have features that are likely to be better or more polished than a stealth game which came out years before it. I don't see how there's a competition here, if it was within the same year it would make sense. Story wise I have always preferred MGS as it contains the most solid story for an action-stealth game ever conceived. However, back to the topic, the comparison is not really justified. Both game, imo, are in league of their own.

Furthermore, I think we have MGS to thank for, for many of the improvements we see in other titles relating to stealth gameplay.

Splinter Cell and Sam Fisher can't be compared to Metal Gear Solid and Solid Snake except that both are stealth games. In terms of story, innovation, crazy ideas, characters and protagonist, we all know that Metal Gear has the edge.

I sincerely thought MGS4 would take the stealth/action crown but was sorely disappointed. The Solid games aren't for everyone that's for sure. Bosses too easy, cutscenes too long, story too convoluted/same backstory for most bosses(way to cut corners Kojima), dialog too slow/longwinded, unrealistic gameplay/clunky controls... I could go on and on. Realism is a big deal with stealth/shooters and that's something the Splinter Cell series nailed from the gate. If I don't agree with anything HHG says, I agree with this. My 2 cents.

Ive always enjoyed both games but SC gets the nod overall for me, I found playing through MGS4 an annoying chore in the end.

IMO SC just feels so much more intuative in terms of controls.
