When the PS3's price is dropped, regardless of how many consoles sell each month, 360 fans will simply reverse the line that PS3 fans love to use:

If it's true that PS3 sales are low due to anticipation of upcoming price drops, that bodes well for MS, because 360 sales have not been affected by the hype. The price drop will help PS3, but will not hurt 360. If 200,000 people continue to buy 360's every month with the knowledge that a PS3 price drop is imminent, MS has nothing to worry about.

Now from what I can see, the PS3 had the best month in July of 08. Last month was better than this month but I would guess it is because they are pretty much sold out everywhere (more or less).

360's best month of the three was last month. Looking at July last year in comparison, it isnt far off now from then.

Wii has taken quite a dip from this time last year.

DS actually increased in June but this month is lower than same time last year.

If the rumors are true for sony, there should be a big turn around in the next couple of months.

Nintendo had another great month Wii sales are surprisngly low considering Wii resort just launched , M$ did well also I'm sure they're happy with these numbers. Sony did great but the PS3 numbers are low either the slim is really coming and reports of them not supplying retailers with ample supllies are true otherwise they need to cut the price and hurry and get a GT5 out and bundle it.

Theres a 80 000 gap between the 360 and PS3...I was pretty sure a PS3 slim + pricecut would help it to outsell the 360 but now I think it will probably sell on par with 360 without really outselling it.

yes i understand that and by no means is console sales just the bottom line but really where i was going was that sony has more that just the ps3 just as nintendo has more that just the wii. people just look at ps3 vs 360 when there doing the fanboy march song comparions and theres more to it then ps3 sales for sony. like i said before, i have all the consoles (including my/my daughters HM psp) and the only thing in it for me are the games. Usually i avoid the conflicts or at least keep my mouth shut but then sometimes the stupidty of the arguements bring me out of lurking. i truely will never understand the attachment people have to a console over the actual video game hobby itself and truely believe some of you guys dont even ever play games but instead sit hear and fight over them. later

Microsoft has year over year growth because it has year over year price cuts. This time last year was there a $199 360?... no didnt think so. Also i dont understand why people debate sonys overall success on NPD which is only giving numbers for the US. The reality is the 360 was at 7 million when the ps3 launched and now its still 7 million ahead meaning the PS3 has kept up with the 360 year over year.

Lets also not forget that this game called metal gear solid 4 came out last june and would be the reason the PS3 had such high sales in june/july last year... no wait.. thats to much common sence.

Oh and seriously we all know the 360 has like a 3-1 install base advantage in the US and its half the price of the PS3 so why is it every time NPD comes around fanboys have to act like the 360s dominance in the US is some kind of big shocking revelation and therefore a reason to talk about the uncertain future of the PS3.

Not really a great time for anyone (in the US).

PS3 has dropped significantly - it's just too expensive as an entry point price in this economic climate, regardless of (theoretical) value. They need a price cut, and have for more than a year. The upside is there's still large brand awareness following the PS1/2 and a big bundle of folks who haven't moved on to anything yet this gen who 'might' be waiting on a realistic Playstation option/pricepoint - if they provide it in time.

Xbox360 has decent figures, but considering the price cuts i'm sure they would have anticipated larger sales - ideally moving them more towards PS2 type movements (lowest entry point option of all three). Might still happen, but hasn't happened thus far really.

Wii, like PS3, has dropped a bundle. Starting to look a bit worrying. The casual gimmick type sales hype appears to be waning. Upshot for them is their tech costs bugger all to produce, so, if they wanted to, they could cut the prices pretty significantly, which might make a difference (at least short term).

I agree the price cut is a 'rumour', but let's face it two plus years without any price cuts - if one's to consider the PS3's 40/80 gig restructuring one even (arguably it's not) - is a long time in this industry. Especially long when it's in these market conditions (recession) and doubly so again when it's been almost two years since your direct competitor has cut their prices without you responding.

Some rumours have more clout than others. That Sony is bound to cut the PS3's price sooner or later - and likely sooner than later - is just common sense, even if there were no rumour (that they haven't already is to many eyes a touch of arrogance/stupidity). And that Sony would deny said price cut plans is also logical - naturally, they'll want to protect sales/profits on pre-price cut models till last possible moment.

Yes, Microsoft could fire back with another round of cuts - and probably will - but there's only so much 'cuts' can do at the bottom end. I'd wager it's less likely that Microsoft will have as big an uptake from a cut of $199-$150 for their entry level unit as they did from their original cuts down to $199 on the unit back in late 2007 (when, as you point out, they turned to things around from going backwards at near to par 360 v PS3 pricing).

There's barriers into gaming. $299 is psychologically and fiscally a big drop from $399/499 (actually moves a product into a different category), whereas $199 down to $149 really only effects the reluctant very budget end of the market - and with HD games at $60 a pop, how interested these extreme budget customers would be is questionable.

However if you look at all the fact it might not be in sony's best interest to cut the price right now. You need to take in to account that the sales of the ps3 at 600 dollars where so poor that sony was forced to make to price cut in less then a year of 100 dollars each. No system in the history of gaming has ever had a price cut with it 1st year so to have 2 of them is just mind blowing. and this while its was still costing sony over 800 dollars to make a ps3. If a silm comes out and sony stay with the same price it is likely this will be the 1st in the ps3 life that sony will be making a profit off it. Also I dont think either way this will have the effect ps3 fanboys are hoping. when x mas comes around and mom and dad got to buy lil jimmy a new game system they are goint to see 199 vs 299. They will see both system let you play guitar hero and harry potter and almost any other game they heard lil jimmy talking about. They might look and the ps3 box and see sockboy and uncharted they will have no clues as to what they are. On the other hand when they pick up the 360 they will likely know what Halo is. If they know a ton about games they might even know what gears is but lets not count on that one. I mean, come on! Who in their right mind would pay more for a Wii? Hard drive or not, I'd rather own a 360 any day of the week then spend more for a Wii...and I bought a Wii at launch. Took me a year of not playing the damn thing before I gave up and sold it to a co-worker who wanted to buy it for his wife.

And judging by game sales, there's a lot of dusty Wii's out there. Or, just for kicks, check out Wii's for sale on kijjiji. I know in my city there's plenty of Wii's out there for well below new prices with quotes like "Owned by 52 year old woman..never used," and "Haven't touched in months. Bought a new system. No need for confusion. There's two customers there, 'educated value' customers (willing to pay a bit more) and 'entry price' customers.

Ask yourself why MS would have a model with a very cheap price, but less features? - think impulse buy, 'he wanted a console - 'oh look, this one is half the price and has many of the same games!'', 'you know, i just want something cheap that i can play half a dozen games on for half an hour at a time every now and then' etc.

You and i could have a conversation about what's better value once all the bits have been put back in - harddrive, wifi, Bluray option maybe etc - but that would be very different conversation.

I'm surprised how 'confused' people get about the idea of their being two approaches to analyzing price. Wouldn't think holding two concepts in one's head - value argument, versus a more affordable luring front end ticket price - would be so difficult.

If you add all the accessories to that thing plus a Xbox Live membership, it's about $50-$100 more expensive than the PS3's cheapest SKU.

Therefore the 360 is the cheapest console when bought, and the most expensive when accessories are applied (which should come with your console).

As for the PS3 slim, nah. I don't think your average joe/casual gamer would frequent these types of gaming sites. I know Yahoo recently posted a rumor on the front page about the PS3 slim, but that was in August. All of these Slim leaks and rumors didn't explode until late July - early August. It'll be interesting to see how the PS3 sales are in August.

PS3 sales are low because it's simply too expensive versus the 360 (broadly its tech equiv), and hasn't had the sort of cultural mindshare Wii has had managed this gen (although that looks like it's wearing off a bit). Expansion of cheap fully featured alternatives to the PS3 as a Bluray player probably has hurt sales a little as well.

Sony simply needs to get their act together and price the PS3 a little more competitively if they want to stay in the game. There's plenty of sales not going to anyone atm (360's numbers in isolation aren't exactly groundbreaking (versus PS1/2 etc monthly's in previously gen's)) but sooner or later those potential customers of previous Sony tech will lose interest/dry up if Sony doesn't price things more realistically in their eyes.

1. Wow Nintendo! Even with the drop in Wii sales, they still dominated software sales. Amazing numbers for Wii Sports Resort, considering it launched July 27th. VERY impressive for just a few days.

2. 360 only 50K behind the Wii? Really? That's both a sign of the 360's sales stability this year and the decline of the Wii from last year's numbers. 360 keeps it up, slow and steady.

3. NCAA Football did well, as always. I expect Madden to top the charts next month.

4. I guess Infamous tailed off after two months in the top ten. Oh well. Hopefully sales will stay solid for a while. PS3 fans owe it to themselves to buy it.

5. EA Active still in the top 10. Having used it a few times, I can say that it's definitely a good workout and worth the money...but a trip to the gym is still better. Kudos to EA, though, for branching out a bit.

6. Will people hold off on 360 and PS3 purchases this month, given the likelihood of price cuts and new models coming soon? We'll see.

The problem is people wont admit when something sucks. Its a form of denial. they wanna think they have the best game that was ever made. What they need to realize is that GTA is old. They arent giving people what they want, they're giving people what the creators want you to have. Honestly all i can see they did is give GTA and graphics upgrade, a mediocre story we've seen 100 times in older titles. The same missions and nothing new. Atleast GTA:SA was new. SR1 didnt reinvent the wheel it gave us what we loved about the genre and what we wanted. They made the game more personal, they didnt say here is nico bellic and his story, they said here is YOUR story. Then they gave us a much livelier place to play in. Hell i played SR1 for months and occasionally go back to it from time to time.

Looks like the 360 is in pretty good shape. Obviously the Wii is on the decline, but then again, it had nowhere to go but down. And selling 500K of Wii Sports Resort in a week obviously helps.

The Ps3 is obviously in a not so great position, with months straight of negative YoY growth, when it needs the exact opposite. But its still alive and kicking.

But one has to look beyond the numbers and understand the $$$ behind them. The Wii which has high SW and HW sales, also has cheaper games, and makes much less revenue online than the 360 (and I would think the PS3 as well). The 360 sells 3 SKU's, which get more profitable for them as you go up.

Sony still loses $ on every system sold. And if anyone still doesnt think those recent articles which claim that the PS3 brings in more $ for EA than the 360 does are false, just look at the sales for EA games this month on each respective platform. Sony definitely needs to shake things up in a major way this year, and soon if they want to retain any hope of catching up.

As for any anticipation of price drops or slim systems affecting sales, thats also false. 95% of people who buy and play games dont keep up with the blogs and what not, and arent going to simply wait on a price cut that may or may not happen.

It's only one territory, and we know worldwide they're still pretty much neck and neck. I don't think there's anything to be concerned about. Last year the 360 was trailing the PS3 by over a million consoles before their price cut. I have no doubt a PS3 price cut would reverse the couple of hundred thousand the PS3 is trailing so far this year in a hurry.

What I find really surprising about these numbers is that, despite being the cheapest console on the market, the 360 still can't beat the Wii. The 360 is 10 times the game machine the Wii is in my opinion, but still lags behind. What gives? And it certainly looks like the effect of that price cut has worn off now. That last quarter was the worst sales quarter the 360 has had in 2 years. I thought the price boost would last longer than that.

correct me if i´m wrong but isn´t xbox division that has been with profit and playstation division who´s acumulate losses? micro earns money with any xbox sold and sony loses money with any ps3 sold. i think ps3 will sell lots because Sony name is BIG and when we speck to people about games they say " you have a playstation?".

Nice to see the Wii coming back down to earth sales wise. I mean the Wii is a pretty cool little machine. But I want the fad to die away already, I'm so sick of hearing about it. People buy it because it's the "it" thing like an Ipod. I have nothing against the Wii or people who enjoy it, I play it sometimes and like it as well. I just don't want the market to turn to casual gaming. I NEED games like Gears, God Of war, Uncharted, Halo etc...

this is only usa granted, but seeing as its over 40% of the worlds market its by far the most important nation with regards sales.anyway the ps3 outsells 360 in JAPAN about 15,000/20,000 a month compare this to MS outselling SONY 90,000 every month in the us and you can see why they will never recapture their position as market leaders.a price cut/slim will NOT save sony as suggested by some, as once you add the "real" price of a 360 together(wireless/live) there is not much difference in price.

You may correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I can tell, 360 owners will have the following games to play this holiday season:

Forza Motorsport 3, Assassin's Creed 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (along with exclusive DLC), Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony, Halo 3: ODST, Left 4 Dead 2, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City, Shadow Complex, plus the 360's additional back catalog of games that includes the most critically acclaimed lineup of exclusives of any current gen console.

That sure doesn't seem like anything to cry about to me.

2010 is looking even better for 360 owners. They'll be playing:

Mass Effect 2, BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams, Final Fantasy XIII, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Crackdown 2, Metal Gear Rising, Halo: Reach and, most likely, Gears of War 3.

numbers are going to go down some. For those who cry about Wii is for kids/older gamers, that is complete BS. Core/Hardcores/Casuals all have Wiis. I state it on here all the time that I have 13 consoles with the wii, PS3 and Dreamcast getting my attention almost daily.

PS3 games in general, are flashy games with little substance besides a "forced online component". Where as alot of 1st party Wii games have re playability because of overall fun factor and difficulty.

I could go on and on. But look at the quality between lets say Twilight Princess and SMG and compare them to like Ratchet and Fallout/Oblivion. Its almost embarrassing to make comparisons like that.

If it wasnt for PS3 fighters and Sports games, i would even touch my PS3 *excludes MGS4, KZ2 and Uncharted*
