how about turn up the volume of the GAME or use headphones if the sound of the drive is a problem to you !

Why would anyone want an Elite? It's really noisy and almost as much as the far superior PS3. For a little more money you can get a PS3 that looks nice and doesn't even make any noise. Noise does matter to most people. If you're watching a movie you don't want to have to blast the sound up just so you don't hear the 360 running.

These drives arent issues at all and consumers don't care. I manage a retail Game store and not a single person complains about this so called "ISSUE"

Honestly I have a launch xbox 360 and the sound isnt even that loud. The only time you even notice it is when you are in the dashboard. It similar to a PC. The noice is a tiny bit louder than the ps3 when it has its disc spinning.

The thing is that the xbox 360 switches speeds, like 1 instance its spinning 10 000 RPM loading a game then it'll go quite and then if you get to another load scene it revs back up and thats when people notice it. If it was at max the whole time people wouldn't notice it. I think Oblivion was like this where it streamed at a decent speed and once in a while it would rev to max.

The only place I hear about these loud comments are up on these websites. None of my cousins or friends that own a xbox 360 ever mentioned it. If your super sensitive put your console in the entertainent cupboard and make sure the back is open is air can move around.

Ya know it is all in the game. Some people mite love to hate, other love to be seen. In the end the games are what matter the most.

Sony fans have had a hard 2 years waiting for the PS3 to put out, they have had to watch 360 have fun and gloat about it. So the smallest things will be blown way out of proportion just so they can feel good for them self for just a few minuets in the day.

Think about it the 360 has the best games on the next gen market right now for the best price. SO people want to take the attention away from that and poke holes into the 360 game. Oh well game on.

My thoughts exactly. Keep on folding b3yond. Anyways, none of these kids ever used pcs with cd/dvd drives before. Whenever the drive is activated the startup rev noise is there..

I can't even make out if the 360 drive is working as i usually sit a bit away from the 50" Tv and the only sound i hear are the game sounds or from movies which I stream from my PC. U guys must be having library quite rooms that you can even hear your consoles breathing.

I would hardly consider this a SERIOUS issue but I guess it is an issue nonetheless and worthy of reporting. I'm curious as to why they didn't stick with the the BenQ. Perhaps they are more expensive and since its not a heavy hitter issue they went back to the Hitachi and Samsungs.

People shouldn't get so defensive about their console and this wouldn't even be consider flame bait. It's just an article. I didn't see anyone write "The Elite is a piece of crap because of the noisey drive!!!! PAWNED" but I did hear a bunch of guys complain about fanboys spewing out garbage about their system. It's not a major issue but an it is an issue.

The question is why did they have a player that was quieter but went back to a louder player? No flames necessary.

I guess MS find a way to go with a cheaper cost of production, china is now popular for production cost cutting~ not mention they also give you an option of quality in production... some of my friends now starting open a factory in china to cutting cost of production, and they tell me how to do it with a china way.

They have the technology, the cheap labour, supportive goverment and qualities.
Now it's depends on you how much do you want to spent or invest, you can make a class A quality, but also can produce a F quality too. guess what? most of the ppl choose the F quality, that's why... most of the product from China... is very cheap.. but also lack of reliability. But there is also some of A class quality too, but it's not so many.

My original Xbox with the "problem" Thompson drive that supposedly has so many issues still works just fine, and I'm sure if I looked at this site I'd be told my current 360 has massive sound problems when it's absolutely no issue for me.

And how much you wanna bet there will never be any kind of site like this for the PS3, because the PS3 supposedly doesn't have any issues at all? (every local retailer I know has had similar return rates between 360 and PS3, less for the Wii)

I was thinking and then I remembered. My PS2 made the same exact sound when I would put in a music CD. It wouldn't do it at all with regular PS1 and PS2 games. I rarely used the CDs on my PS2 so thats why I forgot. It seems like the CDs where to big or something. You can hear the disc is rubbing. Its something to do with the tray (rubbing) not the drive. My Bad...

Story about the loud drive is true, but not all Hitachi drives are loud. I went out on a limb and got 2 Elites, both has the same Hitachi drive. One is quite loud even there's no disk running in it. To my surprise, the other one isn't that loud at all. I'll keep the quiet one, the otther one go to my bro.

It is quite noisy but... just like my computer, i dont mind the noise. If the game is good enough the noise easily gets phased out. i only hear it when a game is loading.

I'm in the same situation as you man... on my 3rd, and it's "quiet as a tomb" compared to my previous two...

funny thing is though, my brand new (custom built) computer is quieter than my Xbox!
