360 sells more than Wii and DS in UK's 2009

The UK's current generation console installed base has topped 24 million, with the Xbox 360 selling the most out of all the video game consoles in 2009.

Despite the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii leading out in sales over the past 12 months it's interesting to look at data for 2009 itself.

The last data from Gfk Charttrack came on January 3rd 2009, where the total UK installed base of the current generation of consoles hit 22 million. If you look a little closer you'll notice that the Xbox 360 has sold the most units in the past six months of 2009.

360's success is due to the fact that it offers as much (software wise) as its direct competitor for cheaper. Moreover getting all the former PS exclusives like Resident Evil, GTA4, Final Fantasy and DMC for instance has convinced former PS2 owners to switch to XBOX.

Percentage is meaningless when it comes to game ratings unless you close your eyes and choose games at random. You DON'T have to play the bad games to get to the good games. As consoles get more popular, and more games are released, the percentage of highly rated games will ALWAYS go down. Look at the PS2 - it has over 400 games rated 60 or lower at Metacritic.

Would you rather own a console with 100 total games - 50 of which are 80+ rated (50%), or a console with 500 total games - 200 of which are 80+ (40%)?

Europe is fairly shared, so I will not comment, we'll have to see what happens with motion controller war, hopefully hardcore games will win, but I'm not too sure for the ease of making casual games and the wider market means they are more profitable.

I prefer my 360 so yes I'm glad its doing better in the UK vs wii and ps3, and yes you will see comments about ps3, which many of us also own(including mine) simply because many are responding to many unfounded claims made by those who prefer ps3 over the months. So its not realistic to expect everybody to be silent when FACTS come out but I don't see how the vast majority of comments "want A game console to fail".= No, gamers should love the competition it brings. Really its just about giving credit where credit is due...ALL the consoles sales are healthy but micro has done significantly better this gen compared to last and considering their competition is two of the giants in the business thats a helluva Achievement, there is NOTHING WRONG with wanting to see your favorite console with the games you prefer do BETTER. It seems that a system allmost 'needs' some piracy, were even the hacked systems show to friends what a 360 can do. See it as some sort of marketing, were friends will buy the 360 and might just buy originals they see running at their friends hacked 360 with burned games... Who knows...

For the time being the game attach rate on the 360 remains a lot higher then on PS3 platform which isn't hacked.

Since launch it has been a gimmick with a few stars. The real gaming consoles are 360 and PS3, and the 360 library + price makes it the ideal buy for the consumer looking for a Gaming Console period (it does offer netflix etc but is more for gaming, i think). The PS3 price is high and it will be like this for a while, the 360 has already enter the mass market with its price tag in the Arcade and the Pro. With RE5 and FF XIII coming, CoD MW 2, etc the 360 offers plenty of reasons for anyone to go and pick it up. This 360's success has little to do with the PS brand appeal like some posted above, it has to do more with the 360's content, online community and price (without accessories of course). The Wii is a fad, the PS3 is premium priced and as a consequence slower in sales although once it gets to the mass market price point the winds will change in some manner that is a guarantee.

PS: My personal preference for gaming is PS3>PS2>PSP>360, and the reason for this is because i buy multiplatforms on the PS3 and 360 exclusives stopped coming for us, the already owners of the White box. PS2 is because i miss out FF XII, ICO, SoTC, MGS 3, so i have plenty to play in my free time. The PSP i just love the PSN DL like FF VII (playing for the first time) and some PSP games are high quality like Ratchet, Daxter, Burnout, GTA series, GoW, MGS, Stardust portable

# PlayStation 3 – 2.2m

# Xbox 360 – 2.2m

The only difference is, since june 2008, the 360 sales have increased, while ps3 sales have fallen.

In fact, the 360 sold 1.7 million last year, while the ps3 sold only 900000.
Thus next year will show the ps3 falling behind in equivalent yearly sales, compared to the 360 this year.

It's all in the numbers, if you care to read the article and pay attention to details.

You can pick up a 360 for less than £100 these days. Sony's console is still £299.

But low price consoles coupled with great games is what sells. And if it does sell it must do 200-300 times better than now to just catch the 360 sales let alone pass it. Agreed, it's there in black and white, xbox is clearly doing well but they have had a small dose of luck having such a low price point available in the middle of a recession, the situation definitly isn't strictly down to the xbox brand being better in the UK.

I, along with most of my friends, are PS3 owners but i know alot of people who have bought 360's simply until the ps3 price drops because they simply can't afford to lay down 300 sheets on a PS3.

Like you say though, once that price drops it will be a whole different ball game. I can't see MS being able to slash prices much more if they are being sensible about it. However, if (or more to the point when) Sony knock down the price (especially if it's just before Chrimbo!) things could get very interesting indeed......

Its sold the most in UK but its at under 4m while Wii is 5.4m..So for the year it is a couple 100k ahead of the Wii and DS so far..Will probably change later in the year. And we probably won't have an article about that when that happens.

Err No, i know people who have dropped £100 on a 360 and a couple of games to fill the time (dunno where you got £300 and £400 from?).

The people i'm refering to aren't hardcore gamers, they wanna play Call of Duty, FIFA and a couple of other third party titles every now and then and aren't bothered enough about online to pay 50 shots for the pleasure. After watching a few Blu Rays and playing a coupla games on mine or my mates PS3's they've pretty much all said they wanna be getting one when the price drops next.

Weather they do buy a PS3 or not obviously remains to be seen but point i'm trying to make is that the 360's far cheaper price point is obviously going to influence peoples decisions in the current climate.

Not surprised. I was buying my 360 a few weeks ago and I wanted to trade in my PS3, first thing the clerk tells me is "What for?" and I can tell by the tone of his voice he knew what for. He says the 360 is a lot more popular despite consumers being PlayStation 'boys'. Not unusual considering how massively popular the PS2 was over everything else in terms of gaming.

I don't think this trend has much to do with price right now. I just think the 360 has established itself as the next-gen console in the UK market but Sony can definitely compete with a significant price drop.

If we all learnt anything in Australia where the 360 is selling better then the ps3 because of the price differential with target selling out of $199 40gb ps3's that alone shows us the demand is VERY HIGH. If sony does come out with a $199 sku its almost guaranteeing SONY 1st or 2nd place.

Well of course it is a fact, the numbers do show it so it cannot be ignored by either 'side'. However, it would also be wrong to say that the Playstation 3 is doing poorly when it clearly isn't. Both are doing extremely well, and, given the timeframes invloved, are almost neck and neck anyway.

Clintos59 does have a point though. As much as people tend to put hate on the PS3 for whatever stupid reason they've come up with, you do have to give them some credit for sticking in their at the price point the console has, especially during these hard financial times. Clearly their is a large demand for the PS3, but only if it drops below a certain price point. Price seems to be underplayed on this site quite alot, when its one of the biggest factors for the average consumer. Not everyone frequents gaming websites to know about Blu-ray, or the advantages of Xbox Live, or RRoD, or anything else for that matter. I've worked in gaming retail (and the industry for that matter, Studio Liverpool FTW) for years, and price, along with the games and 'my mate johnny has one so....' are what influence sales, with price taking a high percentage of that.

What should be commented on. instead of arguing and trying to be the bigger man, is just how well each console is doing in their own right. They are all rather successful, all bringing quality games and all striving to be the best, which only proves a bonus to us. Everyone and anyone arguing over sales is seriously missing out here

Its worth noting that nintendo themselves have said they are not competing with sony and micro, now obviously they ARE because all game consoles are competing with each other for "gamers" money, however I don't think anybody can disagree with the idea that the wii's higher sales have alot to do with the wii brand itself appealing alot more to a DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC than ps3/360, in fact the wii's success is mainly due to its appeal with "non-traditional" gamers like so called "soccer moms" for example...these folks aren't in the slightest interested in *confusing, too-many-buttons-games like Halo or God of War, etc thus Gamer Politics is actually correct when he says nobody's going to beat wii in the sense that the wii's target audience is much bigger than the traditional/hardcore gaming audience that both micro & sony are in DIRECT COMPETITION for...that could change but for now its true. Which is why both micro & sony are both looking for ways to tap into the "soccer mom demographic" with their latest "motion controls" at E3. I don't know if it will have much impact...at this point wii HAS THE MOTION CONTROL MIND SHARE. That one leaves me puzzled. In 2 1/2 years the PS3 has moved just shy of 23 million consoles. In 2 1/2 years the 360 sold 19 million. So even with the temporary economic slump we're seeing affect PS3 sales now (which will be quickly remedied by the incoming price cut) the PS3 is still being adopted by consumers much faster then they took to the 360.

So, by MS beating Sony, seeing that it's not happening in the number of consoles sold you must mean money? Wait, no. That's not it either. MS Entertainment has only had one profitable quarter since the 360 was released and is in the red again despite increased sales and revenue. At this rate, in the lifetime of the 360 they won't possibly even break even. Sony, in contrast, just needs a swing in the Yen to become profitable again, and that's already happening. Plus experts predict the PS3 need only hit 40 million consoles to pay off the development costs, and they're over halfway there. Doesn't look good for that ever happening with the 360.

So, someone want to tell me how MS can come out ahead this gen, cause I just ain't seeing it?

Yeah, and that's why every week another First Party Developer for Sony (who probably has never used a 360 dev kit) tells someone that their title can only be made using the power of the PS3.

That's the point (I can't remember if it was Sony or a number an analyst pegged) where the PS3 would have paid for itself with the revenue it generates. Obviously selling hardware at a loss results in a loss (although it was amusing to see Commodore clapping like a trained seal at the very mention of Sony losing money)

And from a hardware point, the only reason the PS3 isn't break even now is because of the foreign exchange difference. Otherwise they would have been break even on the console last year.

You won't find me arguing that everything Sony does is infallible. They've made plenty of bonehead decisions and arrogant comments along the way, you won't hear me argue that. And you're right, it is better to be a neutral gamer. If you look at my posting history you'll see plenty of posts praising the 360 and it's games, the Xbox before it, the Wii. But at the same time I follow the industry and as such have many opinions on what each company has done right and wrong.

However, when I see videogame "fans" just spewing lies or perpetuating myths about consoles, I just feel that muddies the waters for gamers who haven't made the leap into this gen yet. You know I had a new gamer PM me to get my opinion on if the PSN is just as bad as everyone says?
