Gears of War 3 re-confirmed?

No-one seems to remember way back in 2006 when Gears of War first came out, from day one it was set to be a trilogy, though over the last few months Epic have said things like "There are no plans for a GoW trilogy" and they were handling things on "a game by game basis." Yet now it seems a third title MIGHT be coming.

The only reason I kind of doubt a Gears announcement is because part 2 kind of underperformed for the series and I can't see them putting Gears3 up against HaloReach. It might be smart for Epic to bring this one out early in 2011.

And a Gears movie? Really? I just think the Gears universe is kind of weak for a movie. I mean, why is it so significant that they are on a different planet, it looks the same as earth to me? And why is it that these monsters just happen to emerge from the depths one day?

The characters are underdeveloped and the whole dystopian future thing is really getting cliche.

I think the reason why movies like Doom, Blood Rayne etc... fails is because there are so many things to cover and the movie ends up being rushed. Yes a big problem is the director too, but when you play a game for a whole day, how long will it take you, 6 - 8 hours? How long is your average movie, 1.5 - 2 hours? The movie has to live up to expectation within that time frame and there are things in the movie that end up changing stuff, or missing stuff.

The same thing with movie games, they try so hard to cover everything from the movie but ends up failing. When you look at games that have a different story like Riddick, Ghostbusters etc... it ends up being well received.

GOW was NEVER "set to be a trilogy". When they said they would take a "game by game basis" approach, they meant in not LIMITING it to a trilogy. They even referenced Star Wars in that same interview, as they hoped for that kind of long-term success in the franchise.

My comment is in response to "all time greatness". I don't think the article is even about God of War. God of War is a much richer, deeper, and satisfying experience than gears. They don't even compare in genre. Both the original games (GOW and GeOW) won AIAS GOTY for their respective year but God of War: Chains of Olympus also recieved Handheld GOTY 08' from AIAS this year. Gears 2 took home zero. I think he is just nervous GOW3 (God of War III) will own in March.

@kewlkat... Dude it doesn't work that way. That acronym usually gets updated. So if you type GOW3 now and search in google, GOD OF WAR will show up, but since Gears 2 came out late, Gears has more searches in recent 1 year and so GOW2 will yield more Gears searches. That is the way Search Engines works... If Gears 3 debuts in 2011, then type GOW3 in 2011 and it will yield more Gears result.

Both the franchises are equally popular. But during the PS2 era, games hardly crossed that 4 million barrier apart from GT4 (11-12 million),MGS3,FF and Halo (don't know, but above 5 million). The reason is a a mystery to me as well (even though more consoles were out there.. actually double the current number). GOW2 sold around 3.5-4 million (oh and don't go by VGZ crap).

In the end both are console sellers. GOW3 as a PS3 franchise has an equal status with MGS,GT and now Uncharted franchise. Similarly, Gears has a Halo kind status for 360 console.

I just stress people to make it clear in their post. That is why I say use GOW for God and Gears for Gears. It's not that the more selling franchise gets GOW... The first one to see is the first one to get.

The reason GOW is God is mainly cause it doesn't have any other name to be called up with. So everyone is gonna use GOW for GOD... But Gears has an optional name.. GEARS!!! So just use it. no need to confuse it with GOW.

Huh? What are you on about? As of November 7, 2008, Epic Games announced that their first title sold 5.88M copies on the 360 alone just before Gears 2 was released.

I personally believe they should wait for Unreal 4.0 engine, and the next Xbox console. Yes, that means a 2011-12 release and it can work well for a launch title. For 360, they're only left with subtle improvements, which I don't really care for. GOW2 is a great game, pushes 360 to limits and it can have a longer life with additional DLC, & gametypes.

Halo 3 is still one of the most played online games. GOW2 can be on same league for rest of this generation. A last game in trilogy should always be bigger in everything, and that's only possible with new hardware. I have patience, and other games to play. Gears 3 can wait, I won't complain.

LOL. I remember someone always writing that. It was cool cuz it was funny and he got us all excited about the game.

I absolutely loved Gears 1 on both xbox/pc. I hope Joshua aint writing this one. Gears 1 had just enough story but not too much to convolute it(a la MGS4) and more than enough gameplay both off and online. Gears 2 story? Not so much. But played the heck out of it either way(check my achievements). GOW = win! More Gears? Bring it on.

Well if their last venture is anything to go by, I think they better pack Gears in and start on a new IP.

The last one was terrible, I don't care what anyone has to say. Everything in that game was broken, I still play Gears one as that plays hundreds times better.
