360 vs. PS3 '09 Remaining Exclusives Showdown!

CouchMercenaries.com - Over the past months I have heard many people talk up the strength of Sony's 2009 line up compared to the 360's. Undoubtedly the PS3 does have a very strong line up, but on the heels of E3 I began looking at the games that were "actually" coming out in 2009. I mean coming into E3 you heard everyone talking up Sony's line up being far superior with the likes of Heavenly Rain, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, GT 5, M.A.G., and others. The common theme was Sony would dominate this Holiday season. However a funny thing happened as we closed out the E3 week.

They had a better lineup last year, and it's looking the same way this year. Already have Killzone 2, MLB 09', and inFamous on the market. Uncharted 2, MAG, and Ratchet will just seal the deal. Bit early to make this assumption, but I have a feeling Uncharted 2 is gonna be my favorite game of the year. It was my favorite showing of E3, with the single player looking totally outta control awesome, and I can't stop playing the beta.

You can also import the euro version of Heavy Rain, which comes out at the end of the year, since the PS3 is region free.

Halo ODST is just Halo 3 repakaged. It doesn't even have its own multiplayer mode. No new substantial improvements. Will also get overshadowed by a better game, in MW2. I predict Halo Wars scores.

Forza 3 is just Forza 2 with better graphics. No new ground breaking features. AA for sure. Forza 2 barely averaged 90.

Left 4 Dead 2 is just a quick cashin. Left 4 Dead 1 isn't even AAA.

Splinter Cell Conviction is not a AAA franchise. The last Splinter Cell game got an 85. lawl

"What's our take? It's interesting, because while I haven't played the single-player yet, it looks like it still maintains that moment-to-moment feel and gameplay of Halo, but in a different way. By the way, it's "good" interesting, not "eh" interesting. My only reservation is that I want to play the single-player for myself, and see how the flashback missions feel. Essentially, I'm cautiously optimistic, in that the campaign is doing some interesting things (tweaking the feel of being human as opposed to a Spartan, the nonlinear story), and the main reason why I'm not discounting it is because it's Bungie, and it's Halo. It's also interesting to see Bungie stop using the phrase "expansion" and to just treat this like a full-on game. I didn't hear a price, but Staten comments that the campaign is a good chunk of playtime, and the ODST package comes with a second disc focused purely on Halo 3 multiplayer (a stand-alone disc that has every Halo 3 map pack, plus new map), that players shouldn't feel cheated. I'm hoping he's right."

There's nothing negative about this. They say it's enjoyable, and it's Halo for christ's sake. You know it's gonna be good and have success.

So, instead of spinning, how about you go play the games that you constantly brag about. Oh wait, none of them have release dates :(

But to be honest, I could care less about some of the obscure, never heard about titles on both of the lists for PS3 and Xbox 360. This fall I will be playing many games including Halo, NGII Sigma, Uncharted 2, MAG, WKC, Forza 3, Modern Warfare 2, L4D2, and many more. Many of the rentals but some of them purchases. In the end, my point is, no matter who has the most exclusives it all comes down to one thing, what console has the most games YOU like. Play the games YOU like and if you have both consoles like me, then you are as lucky as I am and get to pick from a larger library.

The problem with the 360 is that most of the exclusives aren't really exclusives.... I own a 360, a PS3 and a solid PC. All the games I'm buying this year are PS3 exclusives.

Games like Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead 2, Splintercell are all going to play better on my PC... And it's the cheaper option.

To be honest I think developers are losing money when they select the PC as one of their platforms.

Games like Mafia 2, BioShock 2, Modern Warfare 2 and the before mentioned games are going to sell a lot less on the consoles, because all these will be a click a way on the torrent sites. Probably even before release.

@Maxpower-I hear that it will do soon but not in the choppy waters of the holiday season where Japanese games(FF apart)tend to disappear in the west slightly. I'd put your money on spring next year-fantastic game btw makes me wish I still had the will power to learn Japanese(very jealous of my mate who can and plays everything earlier than me!).

On topic-I'd put GT5 down as very, very likely to be out this xmas. In fact I'm hedging towards it being a certainty since they started talking post E3.

I'd also take Wardevil off anybody's list as it's vapourware/canned/disappeared up it's own 4rse, imo. Sonce it didn't make it to E3 I've lost hope of ever seeing the game and felt this way since they failed to even reply to a friend of mine who applied for a job(which he was VERY qualified for) that they advertised back in January. Since then nothing that was promised(mini sites, new gameplay info) has appeared whatsoever and given that we have never seen gameplay in three years I'd say it's prolly a dead one. Even AW, pre E3 had more of a presense.

All this AA/AAA nonsense does my head in as well. Have we completely lost the ability to make up our own minds? Busy year for gamers though-which is always good-though yet again I'll have way too much at xmas to buy at once let alone play. It needs sorting out as I'm certain it really hurts lots of games sales being pushed out against big sequels like ME and DS had to do last year.

Forza3 - Biggest new feature is Movie Editor(weak). Devs lied about it running at 1080p @ 60fps. 2 discs, yet still less content than GT5. 3 other racing sims coming out this year.

Splinter Cell - Will have to contend w/ Assassins Creed. Also on PC.

Alan Wake - Kind of a letdown. Looks like Alone in the Dark. Also on PC.

Halo ODST - What exactly is different in this game from Halo1-3?

Should be a decent holiday for all especially when you throw in some of the big name multiplats like Batman, AC2, MW2, etc. But look out for 2010 because it is looking to be an even better year. Blockbusters out the wazoo!

People forget that Sony has already released 2 triple A exclusive games this year, and are releasing potentially 2 or 3 more this fall. The 360 has four triple A quality games releasing this fall. So looks pretty even for the full year.

After E3 especially, I too wondered where this unbeatable Sony lineup was, especially after seeing and playing some of these games myself.

Biggest exclusive of the year between MS/Sony will be ODST of course, followed by Forza 3, then either Splinter Cell or L4D 2.

Those four may even change up a bit, but I dont seriously see any Sony exclusive this year touching any of those games. What you like better is all up to preference, but what will sell better I think is a forgone conclusion.

Dont hate me for this, but I played it at E3, and I wasnt that impressed. Same as when I played the demo a couple of years ago. But at E3, I played the co-op, so I dont know if the GFX were still rough, but there were some serious AA problems (jaggies galore). Im not one to say a game sucks because of that, but for a game that is being touted so highly for its looks, I was left scratching my dome.

Gameplay wise, it was OK; I would def have to play it some more. It wasnt bad, but there was nothing about it that jumped out at me. I do plan on renting the first one, since people seem to like it. Ill give it a shot.

Trust tho GEC, once you try Bayonetta and Prototype, they WILL jump out at you (and Bayonetta is oh so pretty). But hey, everyone's likes are different, so what can I say.

I fell in love with the first Uncharted game the story, characters and graphics so I guess I am impartial when it comes to the sequel. Still plenty of dev time to go and the real polish doesn't come until the end.

Killzone 2 i would say is AAA, but InFamous AA, not quite as good as i was expecting.

Ninja Blade was an absolute pile of crap in my book. its funny, before the game came out i was one of the people saying gamers should give it a chance specially since its made my the same guys that made Otogi which i loved... but ya, what a let down. I was disappointed with NG2 big time, but after playing Ninja Blade i went and played NG2 again, and i have to say its so much better.

still i think the biggest game to look forward to UC2.

Mirror's Edge was my favorite game while 360 owners were playing Gears 2, Fable II and L4D. All are good games, but all provide experiences you can find elsewhere. Mirror's Edge was innovative, and deserving of your gaming time.

I think we're being too concern with exclusivity as if it was a game feature in of itself. Of course, as with PS3, exclusivity may mean quality. But we worship it whenever we make these lists.

If you don't count the whole year. Killzone2, MLB09, and Infamous have been amazing. And where's Heavy Rain? 360 is definitely going to have a slightly better fall season but for 2009 overall PS3 is slightly on top.

And I'm not sure why L4D2 is even on this "exclusives" list. Any near modern PC can run it and that's definitely where anyone with sense would play it. I've played both of the original and the PC is far any away better.

Yeah, I usually game on PC for games like L4D, Half Life, etc.. (games with a strong PC community). I got the original Mass Effect on PC after renting it on 360 and experiencing a ton of bugs, otherwise I would've just bought it on 360. I think a lot of people prefer playing games on their couch with a controller, so they pick up games like Mass Effect or L4D on 360.

Also, I don't think Heavy Rain is coming out this year.

I think it's funny that now people are talking about "the rest of the year" so they can feel like they accomplished something. I can understand N4G commenters doing it, but it's kinda fanboyish for a site.

I'm not exactly sure I'd consider R&C a AAA franchise. Though undoubtedly they have had AAA titles within the franchise (some other titles not quite as good). But i will say this, it's as much a AAA franchise as Splinter Cell is like all these fanboys keep wanting to claim (which i've actually loved most of all the Splinter Cells i played back in ps2 days). So i think in actuality (depending on the title) it's one of those franchises that straddles between AAA and highly rated AA for the most part.

One thing though, I dont get all this emphasis on AAA titles really. I've had games that were rated something like 70 or whatnot that i enjoyed far more than other games i played that got all this critical acclaim.

Heavy Rain was pushed back to 2010, same with White Knight because Level 5 is adding a bunch of new content, GT5 doesnt have a release date yet but I expect we will get that info come TGS, and GOW3 comes out in March 2010.

@Giant Enemy Crab, MS can't really claim the Fallout 3 DLC anymore as it's been confirmed that all of the DLC will be coming to PS3 by the end of the year.

As a guy that doesn't care too much for shooters, I am more excited for the PS3's lineup. L4D, Halo, and MAG, should be great for the fans, but Im just loosing interest in FPS these days (that said, I will get MW2). I'd simply rather play Uncharted 2, R&CF2, and NGS2. 360 has Forza 3 though. I'll have to see for Splinter Cell, it looked fantastic but honestly I've said about all of Ubisoft Montreal's games this generation. Splinter Cell aside my main multiplatform game this holiday is Assassin's Creed 2, another Ubisoft game. God it looks soo good. I cant wait for it.

Uncharted2 looks typically polished and will be the best thing on PS3.It's a class act from what iv'e seen and wasted on almost all that game on the machine - 90% of Sony fans don't have the first clue what an adult presented and cleverly written game is all about - Killzone2 anyone

I personally think the PS3 is the better machine by a little way(certainly not picture clarity though) regards to potential and general raw performance, but apart from some really great games like Uncharted, MGS4 and LBP, i'd be bored by now with PS3.The supposedly awesome Mag will be mostly ignored by the average gamer because shooters are already fantastic with just 16 - 32 anyway and Cod is really where it's at if you're a PS3 fps fan

Some of these sorts of games were the icing on the PS2 cake but PS3 needs more obvious choices that better fit in with the times

Not in any way am i saying any one of these is bad for PS3 but a glance down at what's turning up on 360 this year tells it how it is for Xbox fans ie fun times ahead

Ok dude, but that is just your opinion. I think the PS3 fanbase is more diverse (in tastes and age) and Sony provides a game for every player. Every game released, except some few misses, has sold 1.5+ million (and continue selling). So its BS to say that mature games dont have an audience among PS3 owners. If so why we have Flower, flow, Linger in Shadow, and games in the line, at the same time with franchises like MGS4, KZ2, UC and platformers like R&C. Why RPGs sell more on the PS3?. The list is not correct. None of the games you had mention will be coming out this year as far as I know. But there are a few more exclusives missing in:

1. Champions Online (PC version in Sep and X360 version before end of the year with cross platform play)
2. Raiden IV
3. Section 8 (PS3 version was canx earlier this year)
4. Magna Carta 2 (Namco already announced American version will be release this year, just a few weeks after the Jap version)
5. Shadow Complex..This game looks like a full retail game with 10 hours of gameplay and insane pseudo 2d/3D graphics.
6. Perfect Dark (in 1080P and online play, nuff said)
7. GTA4: Stories of Liberty City standalone game (comes with both The Lost and the Damned and Ballad of G@y Tony) Do not required GTA4 to play..so it should count as a full game with over 20 hours of gameplay for $40.

You do know that Sony releases games all year round, not just in the last 2-3 months of the year. Those 4 titles aren't competing with just Uncharted. They're competing with titles already released:

I always thought, in business, the more higher the revenue number you needed, we must shrink the release titles and come up with only a handfull of AAA title. Sony's holiday line up SUCKS compared to Microsoft's, big time. Uncharted 2 is the only game there that will probably sell over a million in the holiday season. Halo 3: ODST, Forza 3, and Splinter Cell are all guaranteed to sell a million plus, hell Halo will outsell all other PS3 exclusives combined this holiday. Shadow Complex looks better than any PSN game to ever come out (please dont talk about those glorified screen savers called Flower and Flow please). I, for one, am getting really tired of the "This is the year of the PS3" crap. It hasnt happened yet, and by the time it does , it wont matter any more.
