a) throw your 360 down the stairs
b) put a game in you dont play anymore, and spin the 360 round so that the disk shatters and breaks the insides

Then you phone up MS support, perhaps pay a nominal feel of around $70 and poof, brand new HDMI - enabled 120 gig 360 :D

I think the whole idea of the black 360 was to have the IPTV converter already installed in the 360! Now if i'm not mistaken once you sign up for the service they will send you a small device or converter of some sort to connect to your white 360 which is not needed for the black! Also since 360 is upgradeable then you can keep your white one if you don't want to spend the extra cash!

I only had to buy my PS3 once to get all that and a blu-ray drive (I had on old 160gig HD that I wasnt't using so I threw it in my PS3. A lot of people will have to re buy a 360. With that said I commend MS for finally giving their customers a trully next gen system. HDMI being fully digital should really give you guys sharpness to your games. In the end we all win. Competition between companies equals us consumers getting more.

Seeing how all the downloadable content is keyed on the HDD with DRM this was probably why it took them so long to bring another HDD out...they needed to develop a reliable transfer mechanism first. Let me offer a download service and have high def movies between 3 to 5 GB. The more the movies, the more the space. Users cry that 20GB is just not enough. It would be nice to download the movie to an external HD but you know what ... you can't. Now, after months of downplaying the role of HDMI, we have an HDMI enabled unit with 120 GB of memory selling $20.00 cheaper than the 20 GB PS3 and they call it 'Elite'. Yes folks, the Elite edition. So what does that make my current Xbox 360 with the HD DVD player add-on? Ok, so I decide to upgrade and buy the 120 GB HDD. How much will it cost? $99 ... you know, I doubt it. OK, so how do I get my data onto the 120 GB. What ... what did I hear ... another purchase? Right, I have to buy a cable to transfer the data. Why does this sound like a PC?

Alright, it doesn't end here. What happens when space becomes an issue with the DVD media format? I'm sure people are going to gobble up the 'Elite' edition for 'HD' gaming since it is rumored that the premium will phase out. What goes into 'HD' gaming Microsoft? Hey ... Microsoft! 20 GB is enough. Even with a 5 GB HD movie download. You watch it, it gets deleted. What do you want to save? All those game demo's? I sure don't.

Buying a PS3 right out of the box and only have composite cables, now that's sh!t, saying true HD starts with the PS3... Right. The Light gun? The EyeToy? The race wheels? Any of those add ons make people mad? No because consumers like add ons and choices, it makes them feal like they are getting more out of their purchase.

Personally I won't be getting one of the new 360s because I am happy with the one that I have now. I can just add on to my original purchase with a 1st party HDD. Though I don't need the room, I haven't ran out so far, I would like to use the full extent of IPTV.

PS "What goes into 'HD' gaming?" Maybe HD games go into HD gaming. Not an HD movie player and not a cable that has yet to impress but HD games. HD has to do with resolution. Not space on a disc, not color pallets, not even the cable that you use. Those may be "next gen" but they don't add to game play or services, those are up to the developers, both 1st and 3rd party.

I don't disagree with you. I agree that the PS2 network adapter, n64 ram expansion, etc helped to segregate game players. The eye toy and various forms of race wheels are peripherals. I don't consider it an add-on. Its considered an add-on when you add to the core functions of the system. Name me one add-on that has succeeded?

To get that HD picture, you need alot of pixels buddy that create high resolution textures. High resolution textures take memory. Where are you going to store it?

Don't get me wrong. I love my 360. I just wish it was 3 years ahead of the market also (quote from MS referring to the PS3) so that I don't need to keep upgrading to 'keep up'.

I get what you mean about only getting composite is a rip cause for what sony was claiming it should've came with both composite and a HDMI cable. But what about everything thing else that it comes with out the box. I got the 60gb sku so i get WI-fi, Flash card reader, A HD movie player, and a 60gb HDD.

I see what you are talking about with the add ons but by your definition I don't consider a bigger HDD or HDMI to be an add on. Neither add to the core functions of the system. They don't add anything new that was not there before, like the PS2 network adapter. I would say that they are upgrades. Add ons may not sell well in this market but upgrades might, especially when they have a use like IPTV DVR. It is hard to tell but they got me ready to buy that upgrade.

I think that MS and Sony are both future proofing their systems just in diferent ways. I think that from a business stand point, MS is doing it in a more savy way. It is better to take a small expense and Produce upgrades than to take a large immediate expense and be future proof immediatly. Especially when the market can change in a matter of a few years. Who knows in a matter of years digital distribution could overtake the HD market and MS wil be there with a bigger HDD and making money off it, where Sony would be loosing money to third party HDD. I think it is good business sense. Who knows though.

The hard drive and HDMI. ALthough games look fine with software rendering to 1080p through an analog cable, HDMI is digital and offers finest quality. Is this a boon to those who have HDMI, yes although the amount of people with HD TV's who have HDMI are in the single digits versus overall. The digital connection would be nice as it allows top performance at 1080p currently and component or VGA with high refresh rates, and high levels of detail should not be used above 1080i.

The hard drive is what pisses me off. I know you can get by with 20 gb's but that for $100 a year ago was a joke. The new one at 120 gb for $120-$170 (rumored) is a bigger joke. Seriously, go look at 120 GB hard drives on sale right now. You can get 500GB for $130. I know accessories are where console makers get their cash, but this thing should be no more than $50, tops.

Should this piss off Xbox owners? Well why should it. Options are never bad, if you want to sell your old one and get the new, you are a free person. If you don't want it don't buy it, you are free as well. Ultimately, I think choice is never bad, and won't hurt sales as video game consoles have had new renditions since atari and nintendo. Shoot, I think PS2 had 4 versions (including chip changes).

My question though is does this make developers think differently? As we know Oblivion on the PS3 loads faster because 4 gigs worth of the game gets placed on the hardrive. My guess is other developers will start to do the same on the 360. What happens when people are playing 5 games at the same time that all take 4 gigs. If you still have the original 20 gig hardrive then you are now forced to upgrade, pretty much eliminating the ability to choose whether or not you to upgrade.

I admire your stance on trying to stop flaming, but have a look back at your other posts and realise how much flaming you've done yourself. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? I don't pretend I know who started attacking who first, but I know who attacks who most, at least for the last year anyway. Xbox fans attacking Sony and Playstation wins hands down. Look at people like Mart. He says he doesn't need HDMI, which is fine. Then he complains because its not included with the PS3. No doubt he complains about the price of it as well. How much more would composite, component and HDMI cables all in the one box cost? And the reason they're not there besides price is who knows who needs what? Are Sony expected to supply 3 different cable when only 1 will ever be used and we would all have to pay for all of them?

About the article, I really wish M$ had bit the bullet and done the hard yards to start with, instead of portioning out these things in dribs and drabs. They make me a bit nervous. If they bring out a model with HDDVD built in later I'll really be pissed. As for this model all I really want is the harddrive. M$ should do a trade in for all our 20G's, as they were always gonna be too small.

I would also like to ask; on behalf of who do you speak when you say, "Ya, it does hurt. It hurts as a 360 owner" it's obvious that us xbox 360 owners aren't bother by this new SKU. Maybe because we are educated about the difference between the 2. We know as proven over and over that HDMI does not bring much if anything to games. The new SKU will come with a larger hard drive (120GB) but as indicated by this pictures it's removable which means that we can simply go to the store and get one. Now when it comes to HDMI, who knows maybe microsoft will make an adapter for those crying about it.

I remember not having a problem playing Final Fantasy or Metal gear in 4 disks. It does not matter how ugly you want to paint this as a problem, but since I own many xbox 360 games I see myself having to stand up to switch between games. Sometimes I play COD3 for 1 hour and switch to Lost Planet or Gears. Do I have a problem doing this? Do you have a problem doing that with your PS3? Or let me guess all your games come and fit on a single blu-ray disk? Assuming I only have 1 game that comes in multiple disk for the 360; why would I have a problem switching a disk between 15-20 hours of game play? As you can see is not a problem.

Notice I am not talking about Video clips that are just played as the disk is read. I am talking about Game Assets, like sounds, meshes, graphics, etc. Did you know that the xbox 360 has only 512MB - System reserved mem and the PS3 has even less. did you know that before you start playing the game those game assets are loaded in mem from disk? Why do you think games have to load between levels? (Tip: Clear unused assets, load new ones) As you can logically blu-ray does not help levels to be larger, or games to be bigger, or graphics to be better, the only thing It helps with is maybe preventing a game from being release on 2 disks. ohh wow! the end of the world there! That's why microsoft knew this was not going to be a problem.

I would love to play all the games, but the problem is ... M$ is not thinking too much about the reliability of their product even softwares...
I have all MS product with me, Windows 3.1 - XP (waiting for vista too, after upgrade my PC) Pocket PC 2003-2005 (ipaq 3780, O2 XDA IIs, Windows CE Casiopeia) Sidewinder gamepad, ... and the last is 360.
and guess what? you know the history of windows of bluescreen of death?
my PDA need to restart at least once in 2 days. I just use my sidewinder once (it's terrible gamepad) and my love 360 got circle of death and burn-out~
I'm sure M$ know about this problem, I hope they fix it.

Quit arguing about WIFI. WIFI is useless to most users. Sure, it sounds all nice and fancy, but if you're gaming with the main TV in your house, chances are your cable modem is sitting right next to it. A 3ft CAT-5 cable is all you need to a router. If you still live with your parents and have your own TV setup, or you live in a house with a cable jack on the other side, then WIFI might be a good idea.

My Xbox 360 is not any different now, I don't think M$ is screwing me.

I don't care about HDMI, I don't care about black (I like my white 360 more) I can just buy a 120 gigs HDD, and with my current HDD, I'll have 140 gigs to store my music, trailers and demos, and download without any problem any ammount of HD movies and series from the marketplace.

The hard drive and HDMI. ALthough games look fine with software rendering to 1080p through an analog cable, HDMI is digital and offers finest quality. Is this a boon to those who have HDMI, yes although the amount of people with HD TV's who have HDMI are in the single digits versus overall. The digital connection would be nice as it allows top performance at 1080p currently and component or VGA with high refresh rates, and high levels of detail should not be used above 1080i.

The hard drive is what pisses me off. I know you can get by with 20 gb's but that for $100 a year ago was a joke. The new one at 120 gb for $120-$170 (rumored) is a bigger joke. Seriously, go look at 120 GB hard drives on sale right now. You can get 500GB for $130. I know accessories are where console makers get their cash, but this thing should be no more than $50, tops.

Should this piss off Xbox owners? Well why should it. Options are never bad, if you want to sell your old one and get the new, you are a free person. If you don't want it don't buy it, you are free as well. Ultimately, I think choice is never bad, and won't hurt sales as video game consoles have had new renditions since atari and nintendo. Shoot, I think PS2 had 4 versions (including chip changes).

Its true the HDMI people are in the single digits and only a small fraction of those people even know what it even is. And only a fraction of those people will even go out and buy and HDMI cable and set it up probably. Most TVs have 1 port which is usually hooked up to an upconverting DVD player, which the xbox 360 should replace now since upconverting is allowed over HDMI.

The existence of this new box doesn't have a damn thing to do with Sony. The reason for Microsoft creating this box is to push IPTV use. They are setting themselves up to offer this version as a set top for companies willing to provide their service. The HDMI is to maxmize the amount of TVs they can connect to, 65nm chip is so that you can leave the thing on for extended periods without fear of heat, and obviously the 120gb HDD is for the increased storage means. Sure it would be great if they offered a trade in program but this box was created to go foward...not to replace what is existing. They will use the new config to attract potential buyers that might have been sitting on the fence. This product was not designed to screw existing customers, but instead a means of creating an even larger install base...and a larger base insures developers have us in the forefront of their plans.

the difference between everything you just measured is that, all these system might be different, but they are cosmetic difference and usally cost less then the system cost at launch. MS is releasing a system that adds-on components that they deemed unnessary no more then 5 months ago.

Seriously now... HDMI is not all it's cracked up to be... NOBODY is adhering to the spec as of yet (especially not Westinghouse... Grrr), and the only thing that you NEED HDMI (or HDCP enabled DVI) for is watching (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) movies in 1080p. HD-DVD currently doesn't even require HDCP to do 1080p.

The only thing I see that's appealing about this new SKU is the fact that it comes with a 120GB hard drive... And I'm not so sure that's worth the extra cash...

I wonder how much Micro$oft will charge for the 120GB drive separately... Considering they have been charging their customers $100 for a 20GB drive... =P

They should seriously set it up where the hard drive is universal... Ie, you can go on NewEgg, get a 200GB 2.5" SATA drive, put it in, and have the system work with it...

BUT... Then you wouldn't have to pay Micro$oft's inflated price on the hard drive... (Last I checked, a 20GB 2.5" SATA hard drive was going for only $30 + shipping...)

This burns me a little. I just bought my xbox just a little over a month ago under the assumption that MS was saying that there won't be another skew in the near future. Sony has always said that for future proof we should add HDMI for full 1080p signal. It turns out they knew what they where talking about. Then again it's my fault I guess for not seeing this. Even MS said themselves that Sony is a hardware company. I should have taken the advice of a hardware company that does proper forcasting of where future appliences would end up in a couple years...........oh well, at least this doesn't effect the quality of games that I love now.

20GB Hard Drive - more then enough storage for game saves. enough storage for downloading free demos (if most ppl delete a demo when they are done with it like me) storage is not an issue. enough room for saving extra content from xbox live.

120GB Hard Drive - this will be great for ppl who do not have a computer and thus cannot stream audio from a pc, so they have way more then enough room to save audio to the xbox 360 harddrive. if you wish to keep all of the demos you have downloaded this will also come in handy. if you download alot of movies/shows from xbox live this will definetely be the hard drive of choice, this is also easily the best decision for iptv

some things to think about for hdmi.
does your tv have hdmi inputs??? if not, then this feature will be useless. what is the max resolution of your hdtv? is it 1080i? then their is no point of hdmi, if your tv has 1080p hdmi is more preferrable.
are you intrested in hdmi for gaming or for movies???
hdmi versus component for gaming is not a big difference.
hdmi versus component for movies is when hdmi bonus is more of a bonus.

for anyone who is not sure --> the xbox360 purchased at day1 will play the same games that this new xbox "elite" will play.

for my situation --
I live in Canada, in Canada we cannot download movies/shows from xbox live because that feature is not available here. I have a pc which I can stream music & videos from. I am fine with deleting demos, if i like the demo i buy the game so i delete the demo when i buy the game, if i do not like the demo it is erased right away.
in my situation the 120GB hard drive is not necessary

my tv does not have hdmi input, the max my tv can get is 1080i component, so this new hdmi feature has no advantage for me. i use my xbox 360 just for gaming and not movies, so even if i did have hdmi and 1080p this will still not mean much to me.

do i feel cheated - NO

however if you think about all of these things and you have a better use for hdmi and a larger hard drive and you just purchased an xbox 360 or it would have been better for you to have this new xbox 360 "elite" i would also think that this person might feel a little cheated.

I do not agree with Microsft doing this because in a way it does cheat the early adopters, I mean eventually yes I do want a tv with 1080p and hdmi but will I buy a new xbox 360 elite - NO i will not, and because I bought xbox360 at day, ppl who have waited have will have updated hardware because they waited or bought their xbox360 later then i did.

i will only be getting the HDD as all my current 360 stuff (pioneer speaker desigend to match the 360, HD-DVD addon, 4 controllers, battery charging station, wifi adapter... EVERYTHING is white, not black, and no need for HDMI as my TV doesnt have it. would be nice to get the 65nm chips but ehh.

ps2 had a redesign that added the network adapter,but it cost the same as the old one.the receiver for the dvd remote was built in but it cost the same as the old one.then it got cheaper.never mind the color changes.microsoft is adding things and making you pay more.and you love it.if it doesn't bother you,then so be it.but looking from the outside looking in,you got to at least wonder if other gamers are right.nintendo didn't make the new ds and add features and charge you more.it was the same price as the old one.

i just bought the memory card reader for ps3.it's almost as small as the plug in on the end of a ps2 controller.sony could have built that into the system.but now that i transfered my ps2 saves,it's useless.unless i let other gamers borrow it to tranfer saves.so even sony makes mistakes.the second analog could have been on psp too.

but you want to spend for more on the same product you already have.you don't feel cheated buying the premium thinking it was the best you could get,but now it isn't the best if this is true(just like a 3d card).you believe that ps3 is more expensive but all the add-ons and the elite cost as much or way more than ps3.

First of all I never said that I wanted the Elite 360, I did however say that its good for those who want it. I have a Sony 50" 1080i HDTV and my games look beautiful on it.....I've seen comparison's at Best Buy and honestly I can't really see the difference between 1080i and 1080p in side by side comparisons, I have perfect 20/20 but even if I could it wouldn't make a difference FOR ME, because MY TV is ONLY a year and 3 months old so its not like I'm going to be buying a new 1080p anytime soon....for the minimal difference that I can't actually see in real time.

-So why would HDMI be significant FOR ME and almost 95% of the gamers out there? Now as far as the HDD is concerned I haven't ran out of space since I usually delete demo's and trailers etc. after I've seen them.....but even so I desperately want the larger HDD because I'm very interested in IPTV, how is that bad? If current 360 owners WANT the Elite, they should buy it, maybe some of them have a 1080p HDTV and they actually WANT to actually use the HDMI for the best possible resolution.....BTW, if Hi-def is so important to Sony why didn't they include HDMI cable in the box?....oh, that's right because MOST gamers can't use it yet? -damm, what about a component one? -nope, so I had to go out and buy one.....so my PS3 actually cost ME an extra $40.00 for a JVC HDMI cable so I won't be stuck with the supplied 480i (non Hi def) AV cable on my 1080i TV. -Isn't it ironic that the 360 core unit will produce Hi def content out of the box. -No need to buy a "add on". -lol

Listen guys, why do you have a problem with M$ offering more features? What they are offering is just a plus, extra's, which has been done with PS2, and Nintendo consoles. I would understand if it was something that affected "gameplay" or something that would make what original 360 owners games less attractive....but it doesn't with or without the HDMI I'm still only going to get that terrible "1080i" resolution.....so unless M$ surprises me and upgrades my TV for free like Sony did then I don't need HDMI, and I will buy a 120 gig HDD....which is good news for people like me who WANT IPTV.

Like I said, are you guys really here in a half-hearted attempt to laugh at us and "make us come to our senses"? or is it really that you are "scared" that this might "help" M$ sale more consoles to some undecided gamers?

*If* this is true, it's bullsh!t. What about those who have already purchased the premium xbox360, and the HD-DVD add on? Now they're stuck with no HDMI unless they throw down another $480.00 bucks for a new Xbox "Elite". They must be starting to regret all the money they've spent on their Xbox360's so far. Microshaft sells an HD-DVD drive that isn't even *really* an HD-DVD drive. It doesn't do 1080p (unless you throw down another $40.00 bucks for a VGA cable, which may or may not work depending on what kind of HDTV you have), it doesn't do *True* Dolby Digital sound (no HDMI, no TRUE Dolby Digital), it doesn't up-convert standard DVD's (again, no HDMI, no up-convert).

This must all be very frustrating for the loyal 360 fans.

well is M$ is bad then sony is the devil himself cuz its was only 3 months before sony changed thier hardware... and charged more. poor PAL people...
