Gamespot: Halo Wars Review

After shooting through scores of Covenant and Flood soldiers in three Halo first-person shooters, the United Nations Space Command's story rewinds a few decades in Halo Wars. The game grants you command of both the human UNSC forces and their archenemy, the theocratic alliance of the Covenant. Halo Wars offers quality cinematic presentation and a simple control scheme that makes the game easy to pick up and play, but the limited amount of units, short campaign, and dearth of multiplayer modes make it ultimately feel stripped. Halo Wars is a fun playthrough for casual real-time strategy and Halo fans, but there's not enough depth to win over hardcore strategy buffs.

The Good:

* Easy to play once you grasp the controls
* Engaging storyline and cutscenes
* Good mission variety through campaign mode.

All the other review sites with their 8s and 9s are a fking disgrace and are shameless xbots who rate every 360 exclusive higher with 1 or 2 points.

This game is a CONSOLE RTS. It was doomed from the beginning.
Its a 3 hour long game. If this was a PS3 game, then expect: "omg I ain paying 600 bucks for a 3 hour game", "this is a rental not a full game" lame type of comments.

But AS EXPECTED, when the same crap appears on the 360, not one of these so called "objective" review sites mention the same flaws.

Their opinion are worth as much as the dog shiat that you find on the streets.

Lamo wars is a console RTS and its receiving as much of a praise as the RTS classics like Age of Empires 2, Starcraft etc. THAT IS A FKING DISGRACE.

Anyone who really plays computer games and who really plays RTS, knows that this Piece of shiat called Lamo halo wars is a shallow piece of shiat that doesnt even hold a candle against the beta of the classic RTSs I mentioned above.

Not only is it shallow, short, with shiatty controls, its also (NOT SURPRISINGLY) a short project they crammed in together.

And anyone who thinks Ensembles Studios will continue to support...Ooo woops, I mean "ROBOTNIK" is going to support this POS with additional DLC is out of their mind and quite frankly a delusional xbot.

Ensembles has closed down. 75% of the staff, now works for ROBOTNIK as a independant 3rd party studio. The small amount who still works for MS, are working for MS with new functions that has nothing to do with games.

There is no one out there who still gives a flying fk about making additional halo war maps.

This is a game based on the time before the actual "Halo" ring world. So isn't it a safe bet that the flood wouldn't be in this game at all? Considering they were introduced in the actual halo 1 game that is.

It would be sweet to play as the flood if they do in fact take place in this game. Same goes for the covenant. the score represents what they view as the game now. Not the potential it could gain from dlc down the road. The reviews from other sites are more on the long term effect that the game will get better thanks in part to expanding the levels with new dlc.

6.5 is a bit low for me but a solid 8 is what I am giving it.

It was scored the way it was for no reasons regarding bias. It was scored like that because the reviewer is a huge RTS fan. If he is going to give an RTS a great score, then it is going to have to be deep, full of options, have long involving missions, and be challenging. He griped about the game not having those things. I was about to say the same thing. However, I don't believe Halo Wars deserves this low score. Even though I'm not a fan of Halo and definitely not a fan of RTS, I downloaded the demo and it was quite fun play. It's a shame that more people don't realize it. Still though, I expect their Killzone 2 score to be brutal just to be controversial since that's all Gamespot has going for it. They lost what little credibility they had a long time ago.

I'm waiting for all the people who jumped on the single 7/10 KZ2 score and labelled it "accurate" because KZ2 was "a flop" to admit that sometimes, people have different opinions, and some reviewers just don't enjoy a game for some reason - or hate on it for no reason.

Halo Wars' score is going to sit around 8 average - which is a great score to be honest. Mixed reviews no doubt - but some people are going to love it.

I think the main issue that we saw regarding Edge's KZ2 review is that the review itself didn't seem to match up to the final score they gave, nor was it consistent with how they had reviewed other FPS games in the past. Gamespot's take on Halo Wars is at least explained, and their score seems justified based on the review comments.

I used Gamespot for almost a decade; it was nothing short of my go-to site for all my gaming news but the site changed. The forums were unfortunately taken over by the 360 faithful and all legitimate debate regarding issues relevant to gamers were routinely shouted down as well as the news reporting certainly took a decidedly anti-Sony slant. Especially when you put Microsoft articles and Sony articles side by side, the wording and negative tone of anything Sony related was glaring obvious by contrast. Then we had the whole "Kane and Lynch" issue and subsequent fallout. Let's hope that even Gamespot is capable of reforming, and possibly this signals a return to well thought out and honest reviews by the site.

It is also painfully obvious what you note about Gamespot. I don't even go there anymore. The mods were even (imo) letting snarky comments from Xbox fans slide while bringing out the ban hammer on similar comments from Sony fans.

Nah, sorry but I have to disagree with that. EDGE has been the only reviewer that has given Killzone 2 anything lower than a 8, and they are already known for giving lower than average scores. Also, the EDGE Killzone 2 review came out pretty early as well, and it has nothing to do with all early reviews being the best/highest. I think Gamespot will give Killzone 2 a 8.5 or 9.

If Gamespot awarded Resisance 2 a 9, I seriously don't see how they can give Killzone 2 anything substantially lower.

Casual RTS with the Halo Name, people on both sides are going to be disappointed. Halo fans will expect the classic "Halo Game", which it isn't, and RTS fans will be disappointed in the lack of depth. Well I have to say that I don't normally expect an objective review from gamespot, but they are one of the few to look a little deeper than the obvious visual polish and ease of access and find that its game missing something.

I'm about halfway through the campaign, maybe a little more, and I have to see its simply not a very deep RTS as so I'm a bit dissapointed...and most of these remarks in the review ring very true.
I'd have given it a 7 based on the 5 hours or so I've played, but thats close enough to suggest this site is simply calling it as they see it.

If your not an RTS fan, then you might not notice the missing strategy element that are disappointing, and if your mad for Halo, then you should be tempted anyway as the story is good and presented very well, that will be enough for many.

But keen RTS fans will likely feel this title is too shallow - I can't be bothered to write it all again, but if you have a genuine interest in the strategic elements I think are missing I wrote it here in another post:

Yes I work on games, but I've only ever done one for the PS3, and that was multi platform, so it was 360 game too. I've done 3 others for 360, so I guess professionally I've worked a lot more on 360 games than others. I also have more titles on 360 than PS3 and have owned all the current gen machines since release, so I have a 360 a lot longer.
But I digress, I write on here from time to time as a committed gamer, nothing more, and I'm commenting on this particular title as I have been playing the release version all morning. I'm disappointed, but I don't see why that should offend you so much. Just cause I don't think Halo Wars is the best RTS in the world doe not mean I hate your adopted plastic machine of choice. I have stated my views openly and honestly without trying to be offensive, and at least give reasons for my viewpoint.
You my friend, represent everything that has gone wrong with this site, and indeed gaming in general. Where once gamers were united and brought together by their love and interest of games, there's huge numbers of you who's only interest is to promote some kind of unholy crusade on behalf of your adopted corporation. The problem is your comparing a console RTS to all the other PC RTS you've played because there's not many to choose from on console, so you're next competition is pretty much impossible to rate.

It's fun, does it match up to PC expectations? Absolutely not.

Go for it bub, I found a couple of ps3 games that didn't really get awesome scores but i still enjoyed them never the less. If I had a 360 I def. would at least give this a rent. I think a 7.5 is pretty good score for a game imo, screw reviews anyways, just read up about the game & if it sounds like you would enjoy it then boom, lock & stock & check out the game is what I say.

tried with Halo Wars in making it more accessiable but the problem is it lacks identity. It dosen't play like a traditional RTS from what i have gathered. For example building bases and gathering resources is not really a priority in Halo Wars.

So i guess traditional RTS fans will be dissapointed but Halo fans should still be happy with it as it expands the Halo story. Also i heard nothing but praise of Halo Wars cutscenes. I love great cut scenes. MGS4 having the best with WarCraft 3 in second for me.

I have to say it but the trend seems to be:

MS is rushing development to fill their line-up and ensure profitability.
Sony is taking their time with their games, (albeit some of the 2007 stuff was rushed) and ensuring quality.

Needless to say it's finally catching up to MS. Microsoft needs to rethink their strategy (maybe they already have) if they want to remain competitive in game review scores.

Halo Wars is a very good game and the reviews are from positive to great. The droids have only the Gamespot's review on their side...but they don't say that Gamespot havent't reviewed Killzone 2, so If I were them I would wait.

There is still the hope for two great news:

1) KZ2 reviewed badly by Gamespot.
2) Halo Wars that outsells KZ2 in March NPD.

i'm NOT a fan of the Halo series at all anymore (i lost interest after part 1).

HOWEVER, this Gamespot review just doesn't seem right at all.

let me explain.

most console RTS games fall short because they try and shoehorn PC like gameplay onto a controller (why these games don't allow for mouse and keyboard support is beyond me, just like FPS games).

Ensemble was trying to do two things with Halo Wars.

1) Introduce diehard Halo fanatics to a new genre of gaming: RTS. the Halo license was the bridge that would get them to view RTS games in a new light, kind of like how Final Fantasy Tactics got traditional FF fans to give strategy gameplay a chance.

2) Because the game was designed to introduce typically FPS fans to the RTS genre, they streamlined it so it would be easily accessible to those FPS gamers.

for example, my first strategy game on consoles was Vandal Hearts. that game introduced me to the Strategy RPG genre. it's simple gameplay, interesting story, and intuitive control scheme paved the way for me to graduate to the infinitely more deep and complex Final Fantasy Tactics. my love of the genre was born.

my point is, you have to start SOMEWHERE, and the RTS genre is just as niche as the RPG and FPS genres USED to be, before games like FFVII and Halo introduced them to the mainstream and they became VERY popular genres in the marketplace.

Ensemble was trying to open up the RTS genre to a wider audience, and i think Gamespot isn't viewing the game in that light, and is instead viewing it like every other hardcore RTS game that turns off more casual or mainstream gamers.

Halo is mainstream, because it's accessible to everyone. GTA is the same way.

there IS NO mainstream, accessible RTS game out there on the market, and Ensemble hoped that Halo Wars would be that game.

i haven't played the Halo Wars demo (like i said before, i'm not a Halo fan), but i do like RTS games, and from what i've gathered from those that have actually played the demo/game for themselves, it's a very well made RTS, that works within the limitations of a controller superbly.

that alone should net it more than a 6.5. an 8 at the least, considering the other elements it does well.

i'm not one to complain about the length of game (unless it's an RPG, or a Sandbox game), but i could care less about a short campaign if the gameplay is solid enough for me to want to play it again.

also, one of the key elements of an RTS game is that you can REPLAY those campaigns over and over again, and utilize different strategies, meaning that, generally, no two battles unfold the same way.

reviewers are a joke this generation, and have completely forgotten how to have FUN with the games they are reviewing. it's all factoring in hype, sales numbers, and whether or not the game is going to be the "savior" of the system it's on. no room for enjoying the game for what it is in that equation. nitpicking twats. that's what game reviewers are these days. hell, that's what the gaming media as a WHOLE has become this generation.

my advice: if you played the Halo Wars demo and enjoyed it, don't let stuff like this sway you. if you wanted to buy it then, BUY IT. don't let another person's opinion dictate what you do with your own money. especially if you happen to enjoy what you were planning on spending your money on.

I disagree with your stance on the gaming media as a whole, only because I think you and most other sony fans take their critique of games waaay too seriously. Indeed they have a responsibility to act professionally however these are games and their opinions of each individual game is just that= 1 mans opinion. I do believe there are plenty of decent game journalists and sites out there...even Gamespot but unlike the pessimists I think the reality is that sometimes their scores are alot different from what I think a game deserves or simply they are flawed humans capable of "innocent" mistakes. It seems very odd that there would be such a huge Score differential.

I mean most reviews are 1 or at most 2 points within the norm, with only a few sites straying, but a 6.5 is really kinda out there, and is cause for a bit of concern on such variation.

I listened to the review and I heard very little that would warrant such a bad score. If he did in fact view it from a hardcore PC standpoint that would explain the lower score, but we dont normally compare Pc FPS to Console FPS because of controls and complexity issues so why should an RTS be any diffrent.

but Ive only played the demo and maybe he knows more then I do.

Also It seemed as if it was a comparison to a PC RTS rather then the console. But who am I to judge.

EDIT: I also Am very confused as to how they awarded DOW2 with an 8.5 a game that is the definition of micromanaging and complex. I mean going from the criticism in this video a game like DOW2 should have close to a perfect score in their books.

If the reviewer is a huge RTS fan why is he reviewing a console RTS ?
A console doesn't have the power to make a large scale massive deep RTS game. That's why we get these Starcraft (small) scale RTS games.

Try to play Supreme Commander (on 360) if you want to to tourture yourself.

And your never able to play as the axis in the WWII shooters so why does Halo Wars get a - for not haveing a covenant campain ?

It'd be like buying Civilization and being forced to play solely as Ghandi. We already know how the series has ended so it ends up disappointing that we don't have SP campaigns for the Covenant AND the Flood.

Hell, even Halo2 had you play as the Arbiter - which I might add was a stroke of masterful genius on Bungie's part. It's why for me I never considered HW to be "milking the franchise". Bungie created a wonderful mythos that Ensemble disappointingly failed to capitalize on.

It's being judged and reviewed by an RTS fan because it IS an RTS. Just because its prospective audience typically doesn't like the genre, should it be given a free pass as a result?

a very low score for the game. i like ensamble studios, they made one of the best games (age of empires). and i cant believe that they dont exist any more. sh!t microsoft, instead to bribe the 3th parties you should have made a AOE4 on pc. disappointing for the developers. but i am sure the game will still sell well.

Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Resistance 1/2, LBP etc. they were all Killer Applications before their release date, but then nobody buys them.

I bet on the fact that Killzone2 will sell well on its debut in February, but then it will be outsold by Halo Wars in March. And a lot of SONY drois are going crazy for this.

What a great joy to see a HALO game FLOP. MS fanboys have been talkin sht for almost 2 and a half years now and finally got their asses handed to em. Sorry..but the game sucks and is a snore fest, point & click shot that....point & click shot this....the RTS formula just does not work for Halo....bad choice in going in a different direction with franchise, if anything they should of made a more mature looking Halo game and get rid of the cartoony look and feel and kept it a FPS, what would of been cool would be to have it a FPS/RPG element to it like a Fallout 3 type of game, that would of been interesting.....why you think MS Microsoft where planning to close developer Ensemble, after they complete work on Halo Wars.
