A.) Rushed development times and a general lack of the "quality" that many older gamers associate them with.

B.) This continued push for "westernization" in JRPGs. The whole concept seems at odds with itself. If people wanted a Western RPG, they would play Oblivion.

Only good JRPGs I've played this gen: Folklore, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia (though it was really just Tales of the Abyss in HD, let's be honest) and Valkyria Chronicles.

Not one title on that list from SquareEnix. They've lost their mojo. And I don't think that porting DS games to the Wii (FF: CC) or 14 y/o SNES carts is really helping their consumer image much (to those that care, not mom and pop, who will buy a turd so long as it has the appropriate label).

Edit: @ Kigmal. Yes, I did play them; decent games, each one. I was referring to "main" console JRPGs - PS3, 360, Wii - and should have been more specific :) Oh, and I'm pretty sure that World Ends With You was only published by SquareE; they had no hand in the development (someone linked something to that effect in a post the other day). But you're right, handhelds certainly haven't disappointed this gen at all as far as JRPGs go.

Well put my friend, my thoughts exactly.

I think they are relying way to heavily on Tri-ace, a developer that just cant get the hang of this gens technology, look at infinite undiscovery, but heck, even internal development for games such as Last Remant shows rocky and awkward development for engines that western developers use (unreal engine). This sudden need to "tap" the US market is unnecessary, US gamers like myself were already enjoying JRPGs just the way they were

I would actually "seek out" JRPGs just for that certain style that was different than american style RPGs like oblivion.

I want the feeling that Xenogears, Chrono Cross,Vagrant Story, Brave Fencer Musashi gave. They just had the right stuff.

JRPG games shouldn't try so hard to please western fans. They should do what they know best. Sure it's nice to infuse different styles but not at the expense of foregoing the core essence of what makes one great. It's like how anime has that certain flair and style that is totally different from western cartoons. I for one can appreciate the differences of products from around the world and value it's variety.

I have excepted the fact that JRPG's will never get the recognition they deserve from 'expert' reviewers. Most of them bashed Lost Odyssey and that turned out to be one of my Favourite games this gen.

So I will wait and see...not for more reviews, but for my own experience from the game, I suggest you guys do the same.

Kigmail has a point. Square maybe have fall in consoles, but it's pushing forward portables (maybe too much, and there the lack of resources to put good consoles JRPGs out?).

That said, we all know that this would be in much points (gameplay, animations and art style, just to say a few) an enhanced version of SO3, which most of the media desliked, so no surprise the score is low, be it Square/Tri-Ace not geting it right or not.

I don't remember GI review on SO3 and this is one of my "still most of the time trustable" review sources, but I know it's very possible they have disliked the game and I, in the other hand, loved it.

Bad scores won't push me away from SO4, be it I have to wait 'till a PS3 version or wait 'till I can get my hands on a 360.

SO3 had the same probs with a some-what crappy/ confusing story but the combat systems was top notch...so im not really surprised here....but im a big RPG fan and this game can't be missed IMO...

All I know is from the scan it says the first 3 hours are the real knock off of SO4. It also has poor voice acting.

That's not enough to discourage me in a game that will be 70+ hours of gameplay if you explore and do the extra dungeons. That's about 1/20th of the game. While I do feel Star Ocean Till the End of Time completely ruined the series with letting you know it's all in a virtual world/videogame/Matrix, I don't feel I would write this JRPG series out. The majority of the fun in these games is the battle systems and challenge in bonus dungeons.

JRPG fans won't skip on this I'm sure, but there has yet to be a game this generation to convince a friend who isn't a RPG fan to become one. Hopefully FF13 or FF13VS will do the trick... or a new KH game... or by some alignment of moons and planets a 3rd Chrono game gets released lol.

I just got this issue and read it a few hours ago, and I knew that there would be a post on here about it.

People put alot of pressure on SE, when in reality, 80% of their games are mediocre, and people just make themselves like them! SE (while they were seperate) made alot of games in the past, but most only remember their great feats. I remember some of their...uh... we'll say, "Low quality" games that most people ingored and never knew existed.

BTW, did you guys read that interview with the dude from IBM, who is talking about how they made the CELL and 360 chip basically the same? It raised alot of questions in my mind! Hopefully it can kill some of the fanboyism in here.

Tri-Ace has been rushing development this gen A LOT. I'm still going to get this game, because it looks like their best game in a long while. 7/10 is still pretty decent, but honestly I did expect a bit better

JRPG's for their Japanese flavor and since these Japanese developers have started to make their games with the Western flavors, I have lost a little interest in them. If I want to play a Western RPG, I will look no further than Bethesda and the like. When I want a good JRPG, it's getting tough to find one that is reminiscent of the days of old.

Do what I do. Forget the big publishers; go small. There a plenty of JRPGs available on PS2 and the handhelds. Matter of fact, Persona 4 is fast becoming my favorite game of all time, replacing its predecessor Persona 3 FES. When the SMT series hits the next-gen(PS3/360/Wii) I expect it to make quite a big splash. For now, stick with those games, and hopefully we can ride this thing out.

I'm agreeing with you that the problem is Square-Enix at the moment but claiming that their last good game was FFVII is bull. They've released loads of great games since FF7; it's the last few years (and primarily in the introduction of 'next-gen gaming') where they've let us down.

But... it makes a certain amount of sense that we're hardly seeing any JRPGs from other companies considering how PS3/360 games need huge budgets and developers would rather go with the easy option of making another FPS that they know will sell.

actually no. Valkyrie chronicles, persona 4, and dragon quest IV all have been fantastic and above expectations. However Next gen Jrpgs have been lacking, hopeing white knight story turns it around, but disegea 3 and Valkyrie chronicles both have been surburb. Too bad Square is rushing poorly developed titles out the door and ruining JRPGS as a whole.

Surely you must have seen the screenshots of both games, or seen gameplay videos? Star Ocean has very high res textures on the ground and on the characters. It has dynamic self shadowing and a very shiny and polished look to a lot of it's surfaces.
The lighting is also very beautiful and helps to further promote the details in the game world and it's characters and monsters.
It is also running in 720p and has a very sharp and clear picture. Surely you must have seen this with your own eyes?
White Knight Chronicles on the other hand doesn't seem to have spent as much time on many of these small and finer details. Making it seem a bit more "muffled" in my opinion. It is still a fine looking game, but surely doesn't match the visual polish of Star Ocean 4.
If you disagree i am very curious on how it is possible to disagree with this, as it seems like completely logical truth.
I am no xbox360 fanboy, i am a ps3 fanboy, but I still can use my eyes and good sense.

White Knight Chronicles runs at a full 60fps at 1080p. In terms of Polygons, they're roughly the same, though SO4 has better textures.

They're both technically pretty good.

What teams are u talking about? SquareEnix did not make White Knight Chronicles. But I do agree the best SquareEnix developers are hard at work on their flag ship titles Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy Versus 13, no doubt about it.

From what I can tell it has a slow starting but improves with "LOST" like twists. Character models that are hard to take seriously, terrible voice acting and frame rate problems.

The battle system has improved over SO3 with a range of new abilities.

Another game with frame rate problem coming from tri ace. You think they would learn how to program after Infinite Undiscovery. I will wait a year or so to see it there is a port.

I didn't like SO3 but I will be willing to give this game a chance.

If listening to japanese voice acting is a fixed then I rather play it like an older RPGs and read the text. I consider the voice acting to be as bad as the english.

Im still going to pick it up at some point. I've been a fan of the Star Ocean series for a while so it's only right.

But it's really odd that the majority of the jrpgs released so far are plagued with technical issues--stuttering frame rates, choppy animations, ridiculous load times, etc.

The RPG genre needs its own Killzone-level title to raise the bar and offer an experience that's truly top notch.

yeah IMO these games have been rushed to make sure they come out on the 360 first. Look at this and last remnant. It makes no sense to me tough, because then they have a poor product and gets a bad rap then the better ps3 version comes out, but by then people won't care or have moved on or are scared to buy it because of the buggy 360 version. It just makes more sense on both ends just to make the best game they can on any system. This is just one review so we can't say anything yet, but Final fantasy 13 better deliver the goods, or square enix will become a laughing stock.

What is it about them this gen thats making them sooo Meh, last gen they were really good. I can only hope That WKC is gonna be an 8 or so, as it was likened to rogue galaxy in famitsu's reviews and that game was priased in the states. we shall see
so far the best rated JRPGs this gen has been Valkyria Chronicles with tales of vesperia in a second. everyother game one has been teedering on the edge of Meh and mediorce at best. Sigh, I hope FFXIII will be good, Kitase did a pretty good job with FFX and FFX-2, I didn't like 12 even though alot of people thought it was a master piece, and it had critical accliam, perhaps because it bears the Name Final Fantasy.

When will that definitve JRPG apear and totally change the face of RPG games for this GEN arrive? because we are all getting short handed with these big name RPGs from what was once thought to be the King of RPGs. Square is really on a downward spiral, Project Sypheed, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, and Now SO:The Lost Hope, granted though all those mediocre RPGs came from Tri-Ace, It seems that they dont know how to make good RPGs, Squares other teams that Make the FF games seem to have done well, Crisis Core:FFVII, and Disidia:Final Fantasy all did well. It's time to really bring forth the true next gen Japanese RPG, because i dont have a taste for western RPGs... no offense bethesda, Bioware, Codemasters, But Fall out and mass effect, overlord and 2 worlds, and oblivion really stink to me.

Even though this review from GameInformer is average, I won't be surprised if SO4 gets a bunch of mixed reviews with some reviews lower than a 7 and with some reviews around 8-8.5 because both Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant got a LOT of mixed reviews.

GameInformer gave Infinite Undiscovery an 8/10, and we all know how most of it's reviews weren't so great, so I can only imagine that there's going to be a ton of mixed reviews for SO4.

Personally I think that FFXIII is going to be the JRPG to totally change the face of JRPG games this generation, and Versus XIII will be the next because both games have had a pretty long development cycle, have had more funding, and they've been getting the best treatment. I really thought that WKC was going to be the first, AAA JRPG, but since rpgfan.com gave WKC a 7, I'm thinking that it might end up getting a lot of mixed reviews as well, but I hope it does well in reviews.

Visually the game had me gripped the moment I saw it. I was definitely in ore of its look as i'd never played any of its previous carnations. WTF is happening to square. Seems like the enix are trying to undo all of the good square have done. Is the game a glitchfest. Is the unreal engine killing square?????? answers on a postcard....

Seems SEGA have produced one of the most innovative and compelling jrpg/srpg's this gen and that is truly saying something. Play it if you can. The only thing its missing is trophy support.

:side note: man why do they look so soulless when they talk or move around? Most games have been doing this. Did anyone actually think this was gonna be a good game? Ive seen vids of this game and it looks like a schizophrenic mess. Too many things going on at once, too many characters that don;t matter. the JRPGS are on DS. There is a big library of JRPGS on the console and DQIX is coming this year, or pick up FFIV etc. PSP has some great ones as well. Wii has Tales2 and upcoming Tales of Ten and DQX.

PS3 will get there with JRPGS, since this gen isnt over for them yet.
360 has Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Tales of Vesperia. I thought the 360 JRPGS were decent.

Personally I see it as Square Enix, not caring what hits the 360 solely, cause they inked a deal, with Microsoft, just so the 360 could waid, in the water, but bathe in their funds, to continue production on all their major games. I luv RPG's as long as they go somewhere with the premise, and don't cheat the player.

Sakaguchis' Myst Walker, can't really define itself until he leave's the Final Fantasy aspects alone. I felt like Lost Odyssey, was left over pieces of a FF game that never got made. Square Enix and a few others are taking risks, in a good way to branch out their products, but because of the outcome, that's probably why you've not seen a Shin Megami Tensei, Disgaea, Suikoden, and few more niche RPG's.

We all need certain games to break the monotony of genres, like shooters, sports, and sandbox style games, cause creativity, and content, should surpass those genres, ten fold, so people have that imaginative world, we hope to immerse ourselves in, and get lost.

The one lesson that all console manufacturers should learn this gen is that if you want quality on your system the best bet is to make it. I think it's shambolic the amount M$ have spent on getting games to their system when they could have produced over a dozen top quality titles with the money. Whether they are worth the money or not is irrelevant IMO it's signals a lack of focus and commitment to your own hardware. If Sony have paid for exclusives then my dissaproval extends to them also.

It's a generation where news features about "which game is now at the top of a RENTAL chart" are among the largest media highlights, and how much lack of innovation one game is allowed to get away with while another game of equal or higher caliber gets criticized for that very same reason. It's the fact that the media is more swayed towards an obvious console bias and how the fact that most publications are now internet-based allows every fanboy douche with access to a keyboard the ability to transfer their biased influence accordingly.

JRPGs haven't gone down in quality and neither has their developers. People are expecting too much and rely on review to dictate what they buy and most reviewers nowadays are distinctly anti-JRPGs. Final Fantasy whilst getting good reviews has always had a hard time.

I think people need to play the games themselves because a lot of them are good. The Last Remnant's got excellent gameplay and the story ain't half bad, it's also pretty much open-world. It got unfairly treated because it has the same problems as Mass Effect and to a certain extent Fallout 3 but they got really good reviews and praise. It also tried to really be different, it's one of the most innovative games out there and yet it get ignored. There has been a lot of innovation in JRPGs more so than in shooters.

But I agree with everyone that says the DS is where the RPGs are at.

After FF VII all other FFs and rpgs from SE I did not like much(besides remakes here and there like FFIV for the DS)and I guess on this gen Square Enix is continuing to focus ONLY on graphics and forgot to make a real fun and still beautifull game such FF7 ,FF4 and Chrono Trigger for exemple.

So many PPL put on the top of their RPG list the game FF13 but for me I removed that game from my list like 2 years ago, I mean I will still get the PS3 version of it but I dont expect to no way to be close the fun of some Ocidental RPg games such Fallout3 ,Elder Scrolls or mass effect.

BTW that game White Knight Chronicles is preatty much a CLONE of previous Final Fantasy games and that disturbs me, that makes me apreensive about if the game will be really good indead or not to me.

Whatever anyone says, and no bashing of anyone or anything intended, it comes to something when PS2 has the best pair of JRPGs of the past twelve months or so. 360 owners have been sold short and PS3 owners even worse, imo, and to argue over the piles of cack we've had so far seems beyond stupid. Christ, the handhelds get better games in general than the HD consoles do and if Nomura wasn't treating Versus like his only child I would hold as little hope for that as anything else right now.
Yeah, VC is a good game but it's criminally ignored so even gamers aren't holding their end of the bargain when it comes to it. TLR seemed to have every flaw that has become typical this gen and , as such, is the nadir representative of what JRPG's have become. Disgaea3 (haven't played it yet) looks ok but that's as far as it goes and while I like Folklore I wouldn't call it a true RPG in many senses.
Fact is there's a problem with them this gen and the fact the Persona's have shown all their HD cousins the way to do it without shiny gfx is telling. These games are either rushed or gimped because of the budget constraints of developing for HD consoles and the story and gameplay is(generally) not up to what we're used to(again TLR showed ALL these signs didn't it?)while the number of tech issues many have is simply not on.
Personally at the moment a 7/10 isn't disgraceful-it's about par-but the sad thing is SO4 has a history stemming from the first two stellar games and therefore any sequels are judged that way and it's hard to keep a run of form going when you jump from platform to platform and the PS3 versions so far(of those gone multi) have benefitted solely from a reduction in tech probs due to a longer gestation.
There's a lack of innovation AND a lack of doing what they know works and we've ended up with a lot of half baked games unsure of where they're going-even VC(which I really enjoyed) didn't know whether to go fully RTS or RPG imo and I wonder if they could pull off the same trick twice as I think it was a bit of a lucky break for them that they hit on that formula.
Sorry for the rambling text wall(though nobody will bother reading it anyway)but to see everyone getting all console wars over jrpgs that , this gen, have let us ALL down is sad as f*%k. Sorry I must disagree about The Last Remnant, it's only issue was technical issues. It's gameplay is one of the best fighting systems out there and allows for a wide variety of strategies and it's story is up to snuff, not bad but not great.

EDIT: In fact The Last Remnant got universal praise for it's combat system(there were a few complaints but the majority said it was excellent).

Lot of negative comments about the review and tri-ace..hmm interesting, honestly most jrpg dont get a really high score anyways, except few AAA titles and few others from small companies. It really should come down to whether you are a fan of the series or your not, i personally enjoyed all the star oceans. Was hoping this would be on ps3 instead of 360 as i prefer playing rpg's on sony consoles over xbox, but hey that what my xbox is for. As far as the score it shouldn't be surprising nor should it really matter if ure a fan. It shouldn't be surprising as tri-ace products never really had the polish that most gamers ask for and never will--- second story suffered lag and framerate issues so did so3. Only wished they didnt use unreal engine on this one though-- as it may have been the reason why the game didnt go multi plat. Despite the flaws it might have, it will be a welcome collection in my books and should be as well for those who enjoyed tri-aces games. As long as its better than infinite discovery and last rem i think ill be fairly happy.

i mean.. c mon we all know famitsu always rate xbox games way better than the ps3'ones ... yess indeed Square Enix is becoming a low quality company right now (on ps3,xbox) but just because that, dont FLAME Level 5's White Knight Chronicles, that game is innovate on some aspects
