Xbox 360 Now Cheaper Than Wii In UK

With no ending in sight to Microsoft's denials of any future Xbox 360 price cut, retailers from the United Kingdom decided to take matters into their own hands and offer their customers what Microsoft wouldn't: cheaper Xbox 360s. Way cheaper! As reported by several websites over the last couple of days, including Gamasutra, some UK retailers have initiated an unexpected, unseasonal, and unofficial series of price cuts for the Xbox 360, as well as for the old PlayStation 2.

In particular, the "Core" package of Microsoft's next-gen console is currently enjoying the most consistent promotions, with price cuts of up to £50 (€75 / $98). So instead of the suggested retail price of £199.99 ($390), the Core Xbox 360 is now being sold for £149.99 ($292) in some places. As a side-effect, this means that Microsoft's console is now actually cheaper than Nintendo's Wii, priced at £179.99 ($351), despite it packing way more computing power.

Coupled with the 3 million unit reduction in shipment figures (and only 3 million units sold in Europe after 15 months) things don't look so bright for the 360 over there.

You crack me up. M$ isn't losing money on the 360s like Sony is losing on the PS3. They can afford to sell them less. This isn't bad for M$, this is bad for Sony. Why buy a PS3 for twice as much (a system that has less games I might add, and a lesser online service, etc), when the 360 looks so good over there for the right price?

Mart, all he said was it wasn't selling well and it would be irresponsible to say otherwise. If stores have to take a hit and cut prices themselves and lower profits for themselves then yeah I would say that is a really bad sign.

By the way, I like how you consistently compare the PS3's current rate of sale to the XBox360's. If that isn't insecurity I don't know what is. In case you can't read well or your anger overcomes all sense of reason (like I assume it does the majority of the time) DJ did not compare anything to the PS3, so get off it.

If you want to compare then please, enlighten me again on all of the territories that the XBox360 is available for purchase without port, then do the same with the PS3.

it is February. Jand and Feb are always slower. Also, a lot of people are waiting to see the PS3 for themselves before making a decision. That doesn't mean everyone is trading in their 360s for a PS3.
Take my older brother for example. He didn't buy his 360 until after the PS3 came out, and he saw how void it was of quality games, and a quality online system. Sure, it will get better, but he made up his mind. Now he has a blast getting his a$$ whooped in Madden, GOW, R6:LV, or whatever by yours truly.

Well if it gets more people to buy the damn thing then i'm ok about it and MS has not made the price drop offical yet, many of the UK retailers want this console to keep on selling and to do that they will need to have a price drop, maybe bundle some games with the console. All in all its not that bad, the consumer wins again!!!

MS is starting to turn in a Profit faster than they thought, with the game attachment, consoles already sold, and the cheaper cpu's coming out, which will probally be announced at GDC, it's probally a good thing for gamers by the time X-mas 2007 rolls around. Its a rare thing to say (especially after the news of the redesigned PS3 for pal territories) but it appears to be a good time to be a UK gamer, I wont complain at great kit becoming cheaper, I may pick up another PS2 after selling my old one last year so I could afford my 360 (oh sweet irony) coz 2 consoles are always better than one!

Gotta say though, I now maybe start to worry about the Wii, more expensive than the 360 and it is experiencing something of a games drought while the 360 has Halo, GTA, Mass Effect etc on the horizon, maybe a earlier than expected Wii price slash could be on the horizon.

Guys, you have to remember we are NOT average or casual gamers, for better or worse we are hardcore and our perception of these things is slightly skewed. I spoke to a couple of real 'casual gamers' today and asked them what they thought. Yes, they both thought they might now buy a 360 as the price was considered reasonable.However one said,although he would buy one it was only ,because there are no Wii's available. £150 pounds seems to be a level that even casual gamers are prepared to pay, but its not the only consideration.Sony would do well to watch carefully and respond quickly if they are seriuos about contending for the top spot.

I can see microsoft taking up the second console position now. For those people that have the wii but also want another console it looks like the 360 would be a good choice. It's about time for a price cut anyways. I think they're smart to try and usurp the ps3 launch with a price cut, there's a lot of people that will be swayed into getting a 360 with a cheaper price point.

Just when the PS3 is about to hit the UK, MS drops a bomb to further mess Sony's sales opportunity. sorry but you are wrong about Microsoft losing revenue as they will sell at a standard price to all retailers, what they (play.com) decide to sell the console at is their own business.

I am hoping they reduce the Prem pack by the same amount, so you are looking at £240 for a game (usually Gears). If the price difference was over £200 that would be huge.

This "PRICE DROP" is from a Makro branch. Not a retail store.

Makro you have to be a member to even get in! You have to sign up through your work depending on your status. Fill in applications and wait for an approval, you can't turn upto the store and buy the console.

THIS is the problem with America! They take something like this and twist it and turn it into a regularly available thing...

THIS IS NOT THE CASE every other high street retailer is staying at the same price for 360's!...

As an update, play.com that had the core system for £150 has put the price back at £199. I know for a fact it was £150 on thursday

The reason for the price cut is simple. Its not selling very well in the U.K. Like the Gamecube which had a price cut here early on in its life as well. I am from the U.K and they love sony products, nearly everyone I know is waiting for the PS3, the xbox 360 has not really taken off here.
