i was going to say the same thing, but you took my words for it, lol. nice to see this game being pretty diverse though.

LeonSKennedy4Life5578d ago

He's the token black guy because he's black. JRPG's ONLY have token black guys.

BlindMonkey5578d ago

Looks like some sort of captain. Maybe he pilot's airships?

Black Maverick5578d ago

Even though I'm black, I lol'd because that was the first thing I thought. I just hope he's a cool and important character and not just there for comic-relief.

hay5578d ago

In FF7 Barret was only black guy in the whole world as I recall, but he was pretty damn awesome. But this guy reminds me of RPG version of Afroman...

Danja5578d ago

wonder what they will name him now..

Mocha.....?

AAACE55578d ago

Look at the fro... reminds me of lionel from the jeffersons!

Well, I am glad they are getting more diversity in gaming(the blue and green people don't count).

Hahaha, but you can tell by the fro that the japanese developers don't get out much!

Dir_en_grey5578d ago

Barret wasn't black in the Japanese version, they just made him black when they translated the game into English.

I don't think there was any intention when FF7 was originally created that they consciously put in any "race" according to real life terms, they were just FF people like any other anime that is in their own little anime universe.

coolfool5578d ago

Do you have a link? I would love to see a white barret.

Anyway, on topic, I hope this guy isn't going to be as annoying has he looks like he could be. I also hope they don't stereotype the black persona........

Keowrath5578d ago

@ Dir_en_grey are you sure about that? I picked up FF7 on PS1 as soon as it was released and paid MUCHO bucks for it. From what I recall tho, Barrett was the same as how he appeared in the Western versions.

I say from what I recall because we're looking at a decade since I played the Japanese version (Not the international one) and seriously I don't remember there being any changes.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Dir_en_grey5577d ago (Edited 5577d ago )

I was trying to answer 1.6 on why Barret was the only black guy in FF7.

Back in the days I don't think Japanese were conscious of how westerners are sensitive to different skin tones. I don't think they were trying to make Barret black, if you compare it to any other anime or video games made by Japan at the time, if they were making a black guy, like people say you will KNOW he's a token black guy, and I think they kinda made him into one when the game was translated into English.
There were tons of other characters like Barret in other anime of the same time and they were just in the "big brute" catagory and they usually had tanned skin but still Japanese or what not.

At least for me I never thought about "race" when I saw FF7 characters for the first time, they were all just FF people/Japanese like any other anime. I was kinda shocked when I saw the character design in Advent Children for Barret, they really made him black but he was all small compared to the original FF7's "super buff" image.

Anyway I just thought that would answer the question why nobody else was black in FF7, since every body was just the same "FF race" but Barret was just tanned like any other "big brute" type that was tanned in any other anime and video game at the time. All this before Advent Children was out anyway.

The f*ck?

I have no qualms with a black guy being in FFXIII. I think it's pretty cool.

Settle down people.

DrWan5579d ago

that doesn't really fit the theme so far does it? Not racist, i mean..its hard for me to put Lightning and him together in one game, this guy looks like he belongs to GTA 4

Sony Rep5579d ago

What a stupid comment to make. What makes him look like he belongs in GTA?

Slam-Master5579d ago

so because hes black, he belongs in gta 4

im glad idiots like you never get taken seriously irl

lloyd_wonder5579d ago

You know nothing about the guy and you're stereotyping.

win/win, idiot.

pwnsause5579d ago

yea man thats kind of the wrong thing to say. that's like saying that Drebin shouldn't have been in MGS4, and he was one of the coolest characters of the game.

lonestarmt5578d ago

yeah but derbin wasn't as token looking as this guy... I hope he turns out to be as cool as him...

LeonSKennedy4Life5578d ago

Are you black?

If so...stop it.

You're being extremely racist. None of us have even attempted racism. It's people like you that create MORE racism.

He said he doesn't belong in this game. That's not because he's black though. If this was Dynasty Warriors, maybe...but only because that's set in oldschool Japan. (I hate those games.) This guy doesn't belong here because he looks like he belongs on the front of a cereal box. If they had put Wesley Snipes in the game, it'd be different.

Lay off, dude. None of us are racist. You are.

Slam-Master5578d ago

LeonSKennedy4Life i am black, and i dont like the way people are so closed minded and how is addressing this being racist

TapiocaMilkTea5578d ago

I agree, he looks like he doesn't belong in the game, can't quite put my finger on it, but he looks more "realistic" than the other characters, he doesn't have the anime look.

NinjaRyu5578d ago

his facial hair. If they made him look more like an Anime character then I think people would see him fitting in the game more!

P.S.@LeonSKennedy4Life How is Slam-Master racist? He's not the one saying this character looks like he belong in GTA4!

DrWan5578d ago

If u look at that picture, he looks like a real person, thus he belongs to GTA4 and he looks like a Thug so he longs to GTA4, and since there is absolutely No dispute if u walk down to downtown LA u will more likily see a African American thug than say someone with anime looking face..so he belongs to GTA 4.

Hey when u have time, come into my E.R. I will show you records of who gets admitted most for gunshot wounds in LA. African American. Am I being racists? Hell no. Which part of me as a physician is being racists when I need to categorize my patient's ethnicity so I can treat them properly because I know that ACE Inhibitors doesn't work as well in blacks as it does in other people. So stop calling me stereotypical or racists, because I am not.

Come on, you put this guy and u put Miss Lighting or Mr. Tall blond guy or Miss Forest Tarzen Girl together, they absolutely look like they don't belong in the same game. Even the art style is different to be honest. This guy can pass off to be a "real looking dude" from a distance.

DrWan5578d ago

check the city's statistics, there are alot more poorer Blacks and Hispanics than there are other races in many many major USA cities. It's statistics, not racism. Don't be ignorant; if our nation is to advance, we need to admit the problem and not try to hide it or play "oh You are racist!" For god's sake our president-elect is half black.

NinjaRyu5578d ago (Edited 5578d ago )

I wasn't taken a shot at you, I just used your comment to make the point that it's kinda stupid to say Slam-Master racist when their were worst comments made! If that's whatever I said in a way to a shot at you, sorry!

"Hey when u have time, come into my E.R. I will show you records of who gets admitted most for gunshot wounds in LA. African American."

I never called you racists!

However I still think you were stereotyping to a certain point! I can understand if you say he doesn't belong in the game but damn dude saying he belong in GTA4 only makes it at(the very least) sound like your streotyping! It's like me seeing a pretty boy asian guy in a FF game & saying hey looks like he belong in a hentai game raping some underage girl. Just because your not trying to make a comment that sounds like your sterotyping doesn't mean you ain't doing it!

hay5578d ago

Don't want to offend anyone but look at FF13. There are dinosaurs, chicks changing into motorcycles, Final Fantasy stormtroopers, jet fighters, advanced technology, huge and unknown entities, magic and most probably other crazy stuff.
Even Bugs Bunny would find his place in this world... So how come you say this crazy looking mofo wouldn't fit? I mean, Drebin looked kinda funny, but he was great character. This guy can be also cool.

Xbox Street Gang5579d ago

Awesome. If he's half as cool as Drebin, then FFXIII will have been redeemed.

The 7 Best Final Fantasy Characters: Unveiling the Legends

While FFVII ranks highly, there's more to the series than one game. Here's Chit Hot's picks for the seven best Final Fantasy characters.

220°

The older it gets, the more I respect Final Fantasy XIII

Alex Donaldson: "Hindsight is a hell of a thing, however, and in the years since Final Fantasy XIII, my respect for the decisions its developers made has skyrocketed. In the two Final Fantasy titles since we see both the brilliance and the folly in alternative approaches - and in Final Fantasy VII Remake, we get a more nuanced understanding of what FF13 was trying to accomplish from many of the same development leads."

Einhander1972123d ago

FFXIII is actually one of the best Final Fantasy games.

I also sort of was disappointed at the time, never as much as the bandwagon. But really all the fantastic 3D rendered cutscenes and I actually liked the characters and the story though convoluted was actually fantastic and the ending was extremely emotional. So much budget and time were put into that game Square had such big plans, I actually have always felt kind of bad for how things played out.

I have been thinking for years how great it would be to get all three games on one disk for PS4 or 5.

Nyxus123d ago

I always liked this game, and I agree, a rerelease for current gen would be nice.

Shane Kim122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

Gotta take off the nostalgia glasses. It's the worst FF. Shiva as a bike, I mean come on.

Elda122d ago

Shiva as a bike is strange but saying FFXIII is the worst FF is not at all a fact, that's simply your opinion.

Terry_B121d ago

*One of the 3 equally bad FF's

DivineHand125122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

When I got my series X a year ago, I bought FF13 for nostalgia reasons but ended up being disappointed. When I first played it around the time it launched, I didn't have a lot of experience with final fantasy games, so I enjoyed it. Fast forward to when I played it again, I found that the game had many unnecessary filler moments instead of just giving us meaningful content.

The game is also very linear and a quote on the article said it best. "It is like a sewage pipe that leads to the ocean until it opens up on Grand Pulse."

The story didn't make much sense either and I believe it is my mistake as I played the FF7 remake on PS5 prior which is a night and day difference in terms of pacing, storytelling and likeable characters even though cloud is aloof.

FinalFantasyFanatic122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

Probably was a mistake to play any of the golden era FFs first (e.g. FF6 through FF10), it makes it harder to enjoy some of the FFs that aren't as good. I think FF12 was where major issues with the series started becoming apparent, and it just got worse from there.

FinalFantasyFanatic122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

I didn't really care for it that much, the only saving grace was that it had a better story than 15 (overall it was better than 15) and possibly 12, and even then, you had to read some of it through primers, like reading a book. Plus the battle system was reasonably fun for what it was, even if it was more the spectacle that was exciting for me (e.g. summoning). And to be fair, the 13 trilogy got better with every games, I still don't like Snow though.

Gamingsince1981121d ago

Ff13 is only good if you haven't played a ff before, or any other games that are decent for that matter.

-Foxtrot121d ago

It is in fact no way the best Final Fantasy game, it's one of the worst

Linear corridors, Cutscene, Fight, Cutscene...rinse and repeat

Dialogue and characters are pretty bad, especially Lightning as the main FF hero, they literally said they tried to make a "Female Cloud" and they failed.

Story was pretty awful

I could go on

I think the only alright thing that came from the game was the music.

Elda121d ago

That's not a fact that's your personal opinion. The game sold 11 million copies between its 2009 release up until 2014 including critically reviewed as an 8 out of 10 or an 80 out of 100. The game does have some issues but it's not at all a fact as one of the worst FF games.

-Foxtrot121d ago

Not just mine mate

A large majority

So….

Traecy121d ago

N4G commenters such as yourself aren't the majority. The game was well received.

i liked the game alot but i didnt like how they handled the terminology.

i dont mind reading data logs but it had soo many.

but i always loved the music and how it looked. the battle system wasnt too bad either.

but i like 13-2 more :)

i still dont understand why we never got a remaster of the trilogy

Eonjay121d ago

Xbox kinda did. Besides the video files of course which are still best on PS3 due to bluray.

Snookies12123d ago

XIII is a pretty solid game, but XIII-2 is WAY better. XIII-2 was one of the few games I decided to go for a Platinum trophy in, early on. Had so much fun the entire way through getting it too!

Eonjay121d ago

Totally agree. FF 13 was okay but 13-2 is my favorite FF game ever.

shinoff2183123d ago (Edited 123d ago )

I hated this to when it released. I haven't much liked a ff game since ff10 as much , aside from ff7remake. I decided to give it another shot on my series x since it's not on a current ps and was liking it quite a bit(just takes me some time to get over things ) until star ocean 2 remake came out I was all over that.

Square should definitely remaster it or something for ps4 ps5

KillerB122d ago

my favorite jrpg trilogy ever
