it's still a rip-off though, considering i dont think any companies actually make 20gb HDD's anymore, and a 40gb 2.5" SATA drive (for the PS3, only comparison i can make) costs about $30 (im assuming, im from the UK and they cost about £20 over here, probably even less).

On a related note, just bought a 320gb HDD for my PS3, cost all of £50, about half of what M$ seem to sell there 60gb HDD's for...

What a deal?! I hope that was typed by fingers dripping with sarcasm. I just put a 320GB HDD in my PS3 for $110. That's about $0.35 a gig. MS, while normally raping consumers to the tune of $3.00 a gig for their propietary HDDs, has benevolently provided the option of purchasing a REFURBISHED 20 GB HDD for about $1.00/GB, still between 2 and 3 times as much as it should be.

I love my X360, but until they bring the price point of NEW HDDs into the more reasonable range of $0.50 to $0.75 a gig, you can count me out.

You buy what you can afford and go with your options. That's the whole point of SKUs. IMO. They allow frugal gamers,some that have no intentions or care about all the hooplas in the consoles themselves but just wanna play games, to afford a console that does just that. Eventually if you have the cash you can buy the Extras(Though MS doesn't make it easy with it's prices until now with this deal)

Now when you get 2 different SKUs and one can do something the other will never be able to do(when it comes to the sole purpose of the device) then you have a gimped model. Every 360 plays the same games.

I think the Core Xbox 360 SKU and a $20 is not bad at all. Even if it is a gamer that have no plans to go online/have no broadband or just can't afford the Premium/Elite.

I don't see anything wrong with selling refurb hard drives through a special offer like that. It shows that Microsoft is at least trying to make NXE accessible to Core/Arcade owners. I have a Premium 360 with a 20GB hard drive that I bought before the Elite ever existed and it doesn't bother me at all that they're doing this. I feel no sense of entitlement. I'm just glad to see people catching a break.

What I think PirateThom might be getting at with the phrase "gimped" is because Microsoft has a console on the market that can't handle an update. In the end equals a gimped stock-keeping unit on the shelf because as soon as you go online you're going to need to update or stay off-line.

At least every stock-keeping unit Sony has can handle an update straight out of the box. It's like buying a computer for cheaper, but ultimately having to buy something else to actually use it. Yes you can actually upgrade, but your incentive to buying cheaper is almost out the window.

I buy something cheaper now I have to go online to get a cheaper hard drive. How is this going to be known mainstream when casual gamers buy the arcade model?

I was trying to interpret PirateThom was stating when saying the XBOX 360 was gimped. If you buy the XBOX 360 Arcade model out of the box you can't even upgrade. You'll have to go on a website to get the storage devices or buy one at the store for full price. I brought up the PlayStation 3 stating that it has everything from the get go.

As far as I know Microsoft is competing with Sony so it's only natural to mention the two. Does it make sense to bring up wrestling when talking about Brock Lesnar in the Ultimate Fighting Companionship?

The Arcade CAN handle the new desktop. The arcade comes with everything it needs to download and install it. The issue is when gamers have their memory cards full from arcade games and demos...

But if you purchased an Arcade... and still use the included small memory card... then obviously you don't care much about hardcore gaming or new desktops.

Out of the box, the arcade comes with all the memory it needs to use the new XBE.

NOW aside from that, Microsoft is discounting the 20gb HDD for $20. Anyone who doesn't have a HDD now has the ability to comfortably afford a HDD.

This solves so many problems. Now developers shouldn't have to worry about making games without taking use of a Hard drive. Plus we all saw this coming when MS moved over to the 60gb models and selling the 20gb Pro bundles off cheap. Well now they're doing the same with the 20gb stock of refurbished parts. Big deal.

It's Win/Win/Win. Smart move MS. Now I suggest everyone without a HDD jump on this as I'm sure it won't last forever. Then everyone will have a harddrive and everyone will win.

A good idea would be to promote it on Live, you know, on the dashboard, instead of having an ad for an expansion pack or whateverit would say "want to get in on the new xbox experience but don't have enough memory for it? I think you need to have a gold membership and either a arcade or core to be eligible to get the discounted hard-drive im not sure about silver membership so dont qoute me on that....

You can buy a 20gb hdd for the 360 in the shops and its more than double the price so this is a very good deal from that standpoint.

Hard drives are like memory. They're expensive when they first come out, then slowly come down, then slowly get more expensive as they're phased out.

The reason is because of business servers. Servers don't get replaced as often as workstations, especially if its working like it should. Older hardware can only support older devices, like 72Pin Memory chips.

My buddy works for a company in Texas that takes old memory bars and replaces the chips with higher capacity chips (turning a 16mb stick into 1gb stick).

Hard drives are the same. With Terabyte drives coming out and becoming the norm, lots of older;smaller drives are getting expensive. I don't think it would even be easy to find a new 20gb drive. Most consumer drives readily available start at 80gb I think and up.

So technically an 250gb drive will be cheaper then an 20gb if you bought both of them today.

Microsoft can get away will selling them so cheap because they bought them in bulk years ago. So they have all these 20gb drives laying around. They can't do anything else with them except sell them. With the end of the year coming up, why not get rid of them?

I think your right and I think it's only the people who purchased those system are able to get that deal.

If I'm reading this correctly the people who buy the $199 system today are not able to get this deal since the system comes with a 256mb memory card which is enough room for the NXE so most likely these owner would have to pay full price for the 20gb HD and or memory card.

Sure you can say the HDD should have been standard from the begining, thus there would be no need for this solution, I agree but obviously the paid market researchers over at micro don't agree and for whatever reason their analysis shows the Core/Arcade sku's are indeed wanted by consumers so its just spilled milk at this point.

Now this is a pretty consumer friendly solution micro came up with, sure it was born out of neccessity(for the update) but its just good to see they took the high road instead of making Core users interested in the NXE pay additional costs...if I brought a core sku I wouldn't hesitate to get the $20 HDD but then again you have to remember that there are a small minority who brought the Core sku simply because they don't care one bit about online gaming/services and frankly even at $20 they won't upgrade, cheap bastards!, ha ha j/k but how can you argue with a free memory card?...I mean when you brought the console you knew exactly what you paid for so getting a "free" accessory is a bonus. This is also a very good PR move from micro since they can promote the NXE being available to all 360 owners (Core users) without any additional expense.

That's a great offer. A free 512 is just too good of a deal if you want to stick to your regular Arcade/Core usage (Not needing a HDD) but want to enjoy the new xbox dashboard.
The HDD deal is even greater because it helps you greatly for Live updates, demo and the such.

Correcting this mistake is a great sign of dedication on MS's end.

Also, it's funny seeing the PS3 fanboys held in a corner and beaten for their extreme stupidity.

ya, if they hadn't released the core/arcade version, this wouldn't be an issue, but they took steps to resolve it, so props to them.

i guess the people at Microsoft figured that a cheaper core version was need back in 2005 when the system came out. remember how every1 was freaking out about the $399 price point for the premium system? it allowed them to price the system at the customary price for a new system of $299. you have to remember that the system came out in 2005 and what the mentality was back then. they probably had tons of focus groups and decided that it would be to their advantage to release the $299 version.

Ok i entered the serial and console id of my core model and it gave me a msg saying congratulations your consoles seems to have the required hardware to experience NXE. WTF??? How can that be if its core? Although i used my premium hdd on it couple of times to play games and update it but it should register it as a core model. I dont know if they had replaced the insides of my console with a premium model after i had sent it for RROD last year.

It's like the vision camera. If you attach it to your console even once, it'll flag your console as having had a hard drive at one time/access to a hard drive. Try calling Microsoft tech support and they might unlock it for you.

I have a original core system(shut idiots it was all that I could get on launch, and it died 3 times. I put the info into that site and it says "Congratulations! According to our records you have the necessary hardware and storage space to enjoy the new Xbox Experience. " So there you have it, core systems are not eligible for this upgrade, so that must mean that no system is eligible. Nothin but a scam to get new people to buy the arcade\core system and think they will get this program. Dont buy into this BS I called customer support spent 45 minutes with a person that had no idea aabout the program, and went on about how I needed to buy a hard drive or memory card. So as a launch customer I am very upset with MS and all the problems over the past 3 years. I have had over a dozen calls to MS over that time and never once was it a good experience. The first replacement took 3 calls and a lot of frustration to get it fixed. the second one took 1 call and about an hour on the phone. All other calls have been for other problems, never resolved. I dont like sony but I think its time to jump ship.

MS should just sell the 20gb as an accessory for $20 so all core owners can just buy it then have to go through check to see if they qualify for a 20gb or 512 mb and advertise it as an option. This way "eventually" all 360's will have HDs in them and as HDs get bigger and cheaper install the 20gb on future 360's as a minimum for all arcades as live gets better and bigger. Just my opinion.
