First off the graphics really are that bad, second you don't judge a game by graphics alone. I'm not saying that that's what IGN did, but it's obviously how you judge games.

Uh oh what ? I mean seriously who cares about ign , gamespot or most of the professional sites jrpg reviews ?
I dont think a single jrpg nut should , as they have consistently churned the same generic comment over many jrpgs .

Take the tales of series , according to those sites and magazines , its always "oudated graphismes , nice fighting system but repetitive , genric anime plots with no twists " , as if they were trading each others the same word sheets and template , without actually properly playing the games . Now that "suddenly" tales are more popular outside of japan , and now that its "next gen" enough for them , magically the franchise is awesome , wich it always have been .

I dont trust such site to do anything besides following popular trends , and giving popular titles like FF free passes , while dismissing lesser known titles that way .

Wow... the graphics were definitely not quite up to par... but I was expecting more from the gameplay. Still, if you're like me and looking forward to some next-gen rpg's, 7.1 isn't that bad.. at least worth a rent.

well it is a Tri-Ace game... And let's not forget, unless your name is Final Fantasy, Fable, Kingdom Hearts or Mass Effect your RPGs are going to be grossly underscored. What will be interesting is to see what the two real reviews say; RPGfan and RPGamer. They're the only two sources I trust when it comes to RPGs. On a border line game like Infinite Undiscovery their review will persuade me to buy it, or hold off on it until I have the desire/time to play it. But right now, with Disgaea 3, and Tales of Vesperia I don't think I'll be adding any other RPGs to my collection until Fable II. ;)

PSN games are graded with being a PSN game in mind. Full disc-based games are graded with being a full disc-based game in mind.

Maybe Last Guy is better, but don't trust a review to compare an "arcade"-esque game to a full game. Unless they specifically say in the review "this game is better than _______."

Actually I do. I own Too Human, and as far as reviews go they are right about alot of the problems of Too Human, but at the same time the game is still enjoyable and is a good game. I really like the way silicon knights approached this game and even though they didnt nail the game with what they were really hoping to release to the public the game isnt that bad. I actually enjoy the game and think it is a pretty good game.

As for comparing too human to an jrpg that isnt a good comparison because too human is more of a rpg mixed with an action game like devil may cry. I think too human looks alot better then inifinite undiscovery and has more action then it and I can almost bet too human story is better then this game. Sorry man but as much as u might want to like this game and dont like too human, I still think too human is a better overall game despite the bad reviews. Just my opinion but hey I never said too human was legendary or anything, I just said it was a pretty good game which it is despite all the flaws it has in the game.

Perhaps clintos finds that IGN's tastes in games is the closest aligned to his own and therefore the best indicator of what he will like? Maybe he doesn't regard Gamespot or 1Up as having the same tastes as himself?

I know I feel that way. IGN seems to parallel my tastes more accurately than a populist average such as Metacritic. And I'm glad I ignored the "broader/populist view" because as a result I have enjoyed many titles I'd have otherwise missed including the fun but flawed Too Human.

Games just like films, books and music are as wide in variety as gamers are in tastes... One man's Mozart is another man's 2Pac. If you can find a site or a reviewer that shares similar tastes to your own, it's only logical to give more weight to his opinion than the average of everybody else's... if only cause MoPac sounds awful! :P

I dont take emm personally the way u think we do but at the same time it is good to check out reviews from a reliable source that is not biased over any console.

IGN is a great resource to check reviews for a game because they have seperate reviewers strictly for each system. That way they give u a more positive review instead of just having some guy who enjoys all 360 games also reviewing ps3 games. I find IGN a great game site to go for reviews because they have seperate teams who review for certain consoles and those consoles are the consoles those reviewers enjoy and will give u there unbiased personal opinion which ill take over opinions such as gamespot for example where they had a reviewer who only enjoyed sports games, review a platform game which he obviously didnt like and that game was Ratchet And Clank which was a great game. This is why I preffer IGN over most game sites because like I said they have seperate teams reviewing, 360, ps3, and wii and pc titles just so all there reviews are fair reviews.

Does that mean u dont buy these games? No, of course u can go out and buy the game as it is your free will to do so and u should never let a review ever stop u from buying a game u really want to buy. But if u are one of those like me who want to see the review for a certain game u want to buy and need a good unbiased source, IGN in my book is the best source and is a reason why it is the most popular game site on the net because that is where most people go to see reviews for games they want to play.

True. However, you should should keep your eyes and ears open for the rest of the reviews, as well. As much as I love IGN, I have disagreed with them on multiple accounts. Sometimes, I found them far off the mark. It just depends. You should sooner attach yourself to one particular reviewer than a corporate entity. Besides, most of the American media have yet to truly appreciate the JRPG genre.

I'll probably end up buying the game, but will remain on the lookout for fellow reader feedback. ;)

But I totally agree with you on IGN and you make a very valid point about their separation of review teams. 1Up letting an OPM writer review Too Human was laughable, and the Ratchet & Clank Gamespot incident wasn't much better! ;)

I'm around just not commenting as often, as each and every week the logic on this site appears to be continuing to spiral into an open zone abyss and I find myself wondering "what's the point?". I've found making, writing and playing games is a far better substitute anyway. ;)

That excuse "OPM writer reviews Too Human? Biased Review!" is horrible. Too Human is not good. People need to get over it. Yeah there are always some people that love games that others don't (the same thing happened for Lair). The fact is that this game seemed rushed, and it was not fun.

And to #3, saying that online reviews are bad because they are biased is not true at all. All reviews are biased, online or in a magazine. Movie reviews? Biased. Album reviews? Biased. There is no such thing as an objective view of something. That can also be said for anything in the world. No matter what, there will be some small thing that turn a reviewer in a certain direction. After all, we are only human.

There were no excuses on mine or clintos' part, we merely asserted our preference for one reviewer over another because they are more closely aligned to our own subjective tastes. As for bias, well the only one who used the word was you! lol

U say too human is not good? I mean how isnt it good? If people enjoy a game doesnt that mean its good? Yes these reviews may have downplayed the review and some of them had good reasons but that doesnt always mean a game is bad. Too human is a pretty fun game despite the flaws it has. Every freakin game that has been ever made has flaws. There is no such thing as a perfect game.

U may see perfect scores for GTA4 or MGS4 but that doesnt mean the game doesnt have flaws which both those games do have. Its just that those games in reviewers minds brought something big to the table which no other games have done in there genre and has set the standard and is why they got perfect scores but that doesnt mean those games are perfect.

I am not only talking about too human when I say it is a pretty good game, there are many other titles people enjoyed even though the reviews werent as great as those people thought it would be. I can name a couple games that I really enjoyed even though they had bad reviews.

Dynasty Warriors 6 is a good example, I have always loved the series and despite bad reviews I was going to buy the game anyways because I am a fan of this series. And guess what? I loved DW6 and thought Gan Ning was even more bad a$$ on this version compared to DW5. Alot of u may look at reviews and say because this game got this low score must mean its a bad game but at the same time if this is a game u have been anticipating since u first seen trailers and stuff u can almost bet the game will be fun for u despite bad reviews which was the same case for reviews for DW6 and Too Human and many other games like Crackdown, Heavenly Sword, even Folklore and Lair and Lost Odyssey. Alot of these titles may not be as great as people thought they were going to be but all these titles can still be enjoyed by people who love these type of games.

Also wanted to point ou that I know there alot of biased game sites out there but like I have said before on my early post above, IGN is prolly the best source that isnt biased towards most games because they have seperate teams reviewing certain consoles to keep it a fair review. And those reviewers enjoy games on those platforms they review, so there reviews to me are more reliable then most other sites because most of these other game sites let the same reviewers who review 360 games review ps3 games and yes if this certain person isnt a big fan of ps3 games they are most likely going to give a bad review. For example GameDaily. Biggest 360 fanboys on the net and they still review ps3 games. U really think im going to go to this site to get reviews for a ps3 game I really want to play? Hells no im going to IGN like I have always done and I been happy with IGN reviews since the first time I went on there site.

I agree that yes almost every game site may have some bias opinions but that is how we all are and if we werent then there wouldnt be any games to critisize and we would all be just playing the same old games but this is a good reason why its good to have reviews because it also helps devs see what mistakes they have made and correct those mistakes with the next project they work on.

To Superfragilistic I totally understand why u dont comment much and maybe I should do the same since it is really a waste of finger muscles to waste on people who cant get things straight in there head, lol. Anyways u keep enjoying your games, and many people on here should do the same including myself. Ill be there sooner or later though but u take it easy and ill see u around. :)

Actually, no, just because someone enjoys it doesn't mean it's good. No more than anyone not liking it makes a game bad. While taste is often subjective, the concept of "good taste" and "bad taste" exist for a reason. In regards to games, taking out the subjectivity of genre, graphical style and control scheme, there are issues that will, no matter who enjoys it, keep a game from being good. Bad frame rates, bad writing, bugs, and such. If these things persist from the outset, no matter how much anyone might enjoy the game, the game isn't good.

I worded it wrong. I was talking about the excuse that people used like "OPM writer= bi a se d!" didn't make sense.

And yes I have reviewed things before (used to for school newspaper). And everyone knows that there is no such thing as an objective review. It's the same thing with breaking up with a girlfriend (or for juuken, a boyfriend... or a girlfriend if that's your thing). Can you break up with a girl and not feel a single feeling about it (and don't say Jerry Seinfeld did)? No matter what there will be some personal taste that will change a review to something else, regardless of if you review things.

I'm not saying you personally (or clintos) were making excuses, but I was just trying to say that IGN and 1UP should be trusted as reviews. Unless they have some scandal, saying they are biased is true, but not a good reason for distrusting them.

Of course, I say just rent stuff for like 5 bucks then buy it if you want. Reviews shouldn't decide anything except if that is the type of game you would like.

Some people can't formulate an opinion, they rely on others to tell them what path to take. These people are know as eternal followers, you would be surprise how many people like this exist. Some don't even know they have this personality flaw.

I use reviews as a guideline to tell me about the game, but as for judging whether or not I would like it, I usually play a demo or rent it to make my own decision.

Sometimes game reviewers get to caught up in technical BS that doesn't really matter to the gamer. Other times, they are unable to fairly judge a genre because the don't favor that particular genre. I wonder, do their bosses select them for reviews based on their genre favors or do they just put them on the next thing that comes out. Because it will affect the scores. I have played games before that I really loved and later looked at a 1up or IGN review and noticed that they gave it a very poor review. Oh well, I like it and that's really all that matters in the end.

I hear what you are saying but, who determines what excellence is, the buyer or 50 reviewers with different opinions the mostly talk about things and lower their scores base on things that you don't care about such as framerate drop during cut scenes.

Would you rather spend 60 bucks based on reading good reviews just to find out that you don't like it, or 5 bucks for a rental which saved you 55 bucks because you found out that you don't like it.

I'll spend the 5 bucks. Unless It is a must buy, first day buy, I tend to always rent it first. And if it is a short 8-10 hr game, I'd rent it twice and just finish it over a ten day period(video games at our blockbuster is 5 days for 5.99)

I don't listen to reviews. If there's a game i find interesting, then I'll buy it, or maybe just rent it. In fact, there's only one game in my life, that i preordered because of the reviews(do i even have to say it?) yeah, GTA IV.

I'm not much of a RPG guy, and to be honest i dont have a X360. I only play Xbox at some of my friends. But i'm gonna get one someday (I really like Halo)

Now and days.....it seems a 8.0 or higher is called the "good" rating. Whereas 7.0 is "acceptable" pretty much hit or miss depending on the customer. If you have below 7...it means it just plain sux bigtime.

I didn't have too high hopes for this game after I heard it was only like 20-25 hour game.

Id rather stick with my Disgaea 3 (298374982374 hours) and Tales of Vesp (60-100 hours).

The complaint on too many characters and not enough information of them in the story is very valid, but if you look at previous tri-Ace games - Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean and Radiata Stories - it's very similar. Those games are also 20-30 hours. I loved their previous games, so it's a must for me, whether or not the critics enjoyed it.

Ive really been wanting to hear more about White Knight Story, it kinda seems like it dropped of the face of the earth. Level 5 have made some pretty great games as developers and some of the early gameplay looked pretty promising.

Valkryia Chronicles scored some pretty good reviews from Famitsu, 34/40, so im definitely looking to seeing what a few other sites and magazines have to say about it closer to release.

But since I am a PS3 owner im really looking forward to Eternal Sonata when it releases in Oct. I was pretty jealous of 360 guys last year! looks quite beautiful and has a lot of character. But overall it should be a pretty decent fall/winter with plenty to look forward to in the spring

Score are and should be the mirror of the reviewers opinion about the game period . Reading into it more like if "tales got 7 and too human got 9 , they means too human is better" is silly . Such comparison might only occurs between a game and its sequel ...
But no one is going to act like a robot and grade a title according to past score from games of the same genre and other big databases . Or what should they spend their time grading a doom titles 0.5 points each time , if they actually found a little better each sequel ?

To address your point, it's considered a flop because with a low score, you won't see MS or whoever bragging about the game. This entire year and before Too Human and Infinite Undiscovery were two games you couldn't get MS to stfu about as part of their "reason to own an Xbox 360 in 2008". With a low score, they will basically try to keep quiet and try to act as if the game never happened when you hear them talk about games from now.

With how things are shaping up, their 3rd party lineup isn't shaping up too nicely and a lot of critics suggestions that all 360 really has this year is Halo Wars and Gears of War 2 looks like it's coming true. Microsoft put all their money in the wrong places.

So lets put it this way Baka-akaB, at the end of the year when the manufacturers - Sony, MS and Nintendo - give their year end PR statements as they always do, don't be surprised that MS will leave out Too Human, Infinite Undiscovery (depending on how the rest of the reviews turn out) simply because they can't use that as a reason to own the 360 if the game gets bad scores.

I really dont understand whats with all the exclusivity hype on the 360 when the games are mediocre at best. I mean, Ive yet to see a game like Metal Gear on the 360. Too Human had as long of development and look how that turned out. its an action rpg. If you consider this an rpg then I will consider God of War an rpg and thus I would have to say that the Tales games and Infinite Undiscovery are the crappiest games Ive ever seen. JRPGs all suck, the Japanese are stuck in the gen before last as far as game development goes. They are now the worst devs in the business when it comes to inovation.

With the exception of Uncharted, all the Japan made PS3 exclusives have been just pretty PS2 games. MGS4 was an exception as well since they actually innovated and improved that game in some areas.

The only reason JRPGs did well in the past is because they were on PS2 and most reviewers are Playstation fanboys at heart, so they pretty much slobbered over anything that came off as uniquely Japanese or Playstation brandish. Now that 360 is the home of the JRPG, suddenly reviewers are starting to see how lame, repetitive, and weird JRPGs really are. So no don't listen to those idiots, judge the game for your self.

With the PSP, you get 2 great GTAs, Final Fantasy Agito XIII, and Racing games.

Now, PS has the best FPS (Resistance2, Killzone2) and the 360 has the RPG's and i couldn't be happier. 2d fighting and FPS's best on one console! Enjoy FF13, versus, IU and all that stuff guys and gals who like RPG's. Last RPG i played and finished;

last i checked a score 0f 7.0 (+) is still quite decent, NO im not trying to spin this in a certain way but, just think about it i'm sure many ppl received a 70%-ish at school at some point, was it a fail? (no). So why are ppl still writing this game off like it's shovelware. Do ppl want every game to be released a AAA title? cmon its the same way ppl like those B-movies that are just fun to watch. Same with this i'm sure its fun to play as the fighting engine sounds interesting to me, just don't play it expecting a "masterpiece"

I already have this game preordered... but I must say that score is rather discouraging. I won't be running out to cancel the game or anything, but IGN is my most trusted site for reviews. It's rare that my opinion differs far from theirs. Quite rare in fact. I'll wait to see some more reviews and hopefully it looks a little brighter. As it stands though I'm a little worried over the fate of my $60.

I really do hope this game is enjoyable though.

I do agree that you really shouldn't say any console's in bad shape based on a few recent games with around average scores. However, you have to remember how N4G fanboys work. It's almost always made into PS3 vs. 360 more than it is about the game. I think what we see going on here is some PS3 fanboys getting on about how the 360 fanboys were shoving these RPG's in their faces saying "Haha, you don't have any of these." Basically it's like there's always a greater war going on and every review for a particular game is somehow a battle won or lost. So I do agree with you there.

I must say though that I do not believe that ONLY fanboys care about scores. $60 is a fair bit of money... and with so many games coming out it can be difficult determining which titles to go for. In that way I think review can be very helpful... at least in deciding which games to go for first. I don't believe you should call a game 'crap' or anything without first playing it, but I don't think there's anything wrong with being a little cautious should fall lower than expected. Also, while again I think you should play a game to form your own opinion, I do believe reviews can effect the sales of a game. Not in all cases... but I do think there are people out there who are swayed to buy or not to buy a game based on its score. How many is hard to say.

If you take a game like MGS4 which received many 10's for example... that likely made more than a few people say, "Hmmm... maybe I need to give this one a try." due to the high marks it received. Review scores can generate interest. I think everyone should come to their own conclusions in the end... but I do think that reviews are an important part in the gaming society.

Well, I don't think 7.1 is 'bad' at least. I've found that I've enjoyed more lower scoring RPG's than games in other genres getting the same marks though so I don't think it's quite as detrimental as it would be say it were an action game or something. RPG's due tend to get lower marks... at least J-RPG's. I'll admit there hasn't been so much 'evolution' in them since past years, but I do think they often receive lower than deserved scores. At least by a little in most cases.

The abundance of characters does concern me as well. Establishing an emotional connection with the player is alot more difficult to do with a shorter game as well. But we'll see how it works out I guess.

As for finding the game for cheaper online... I really couldn't tell you for sure. I wouldn't expect you could get it for much cheaper than $60 with shipping. Perhaps on Ebay a short time after the games release but at this point I wouldn't THINK so. Could be wrong though.

Anyway I guess that is my biggest (perceived) gripe with the game, though I must say it has actually been used to great effect in games such as Suikoden.

I don't have the luxury of getting Tales of Vesperia instead though, cause it's not coming out until 09' in Aus.

There they also always tell you the move you are doing if it is a special attack. So thats nothing new. For me it is ok. The only thing I am not sure about the game is the camera. What I have seen in videos the camera will maybe not help in your fights ....

I agree what your saying but what I was trying to say is that a score means nothing . Its cosmetic.What matters is what is written about the game, the good points and bad points of the game not the score.Too human is a good example because alot of reviewers said very very very good things about the game and they listed all the bugs but it seems that the score is reflecting more on the bad than the good. ! of the sites gave too human liek a 7 something or a 6 something but only really complained about 1 or 2 bad bugs the rest of either good things about the game or just explaining what its about so if someone sees a 7.1 and they might say wow 360 is dead or another crappy jrpg. without actually understanding the game

And I agree with most of what you say there. I actually did read the whole review as I do with most of IGN's reviews on games I'm interested in and they don't seem to talk to bad about it. Hopefully it was just taken down mostly for its length and lack of side missions and such. I don't mind those things as long as the story is fairly solid and they didn't seem to have many gripes regarding that.

I understand where you're coming from though. It can be frustrating to see people coming in declaring 'flop' and saying your console is doomed or whatever. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way of avoiding those kinds of comments with fanboys intent on getting back at fanboys at every turn.

I rent most games anyways especially RPG's. Alot of them are far too time consuming and if there's a problem i don't want to have to spend 60 bucks on mistakes made. with rentals I can simply return the game without hassle and focused on finding something better!

I must must admit i do read online reviews and are sometimes convinced that a game is mediocre when its not. I know ppl that liked (too human) and didn't agree with igns low score and couldn't justify it as they had "Actual fun" playing the game. Really now.... I can find out if a certain game is crap by renting it for and hour usually that enough time to experience texture popping,frame rate issues and the like.

Bottom line: rent,play then judge for yourself.

If I like a genre then I will play decent games that come out the GENRE. If I have not played the game, obviously I can't rely on just REVIEWS.

Especially when it comes to my GENRE, I'm a big fan of JRPGS. The only one I have not played on the 360 has been Blue Dragon(cause of time constraints).

They said Lost Odyssey was lack-luster and that's the BEST JRPG I've played in awhile, remenicent of Final Fantasy 10. Scores didn't stop me. That's my Genre. Not every JRPG gets great scores and even some that do get great scores don't sell very well and only to niche markets.

Outside of likes.... of Final Fantasy waiting for some tru AAA JRPG averaging 90+ is somewhat unfair looking at history...We hold FF series and Square Enix with such high regards, every other Jrpg lies just in the shadow and seen as decent. Think about it, how many true JRPGs sell like Final Fantasy numbers world-wide? You do have your niche JRPGS as well, that will sell hot out the gates but still struggle to reach 1 million.

How many decent JRPGs have sold over 1 million on all the consoles this gen? How many are we really expecting to sell better than FF worldwide?

We have seen a few x360 exclusives come out in the last 2 months, and not get great reviews (good but not great). But were the hell are the PS3 exclusives? The last one i heard about was MGS4 in June. The next one i think that comes out is LBP in September (witch some magazines, are not praising as much as the were before).

It's going to be interesting to see the PS3 exclusive reviews in the near future. PS3 fans are hammering the x360 games now. Let's await a couple of months to see the PS3 exclusives.

I enjoy Too Human, Tales of Vesperia looks great and IU is still a good JRPG as the review stated, it's just not the best in the genre. Still a very good trilogy of exclusive games, which at the same time the PS3 has nothing!!!!

Put it this way, I enjoyed Eternal Sonata and Diablo 2 and these last few games resemble them so I'm happy with them and I'm sure most others will be to.

Buy Too Human, don't belive the (negative) hype! ;)

The review doesn't sound bias, but the point deduct is bigger then usual.

JRPG has always been linear story design, that's not something will change. 18 usable characters that game itself push the player to use them all (base on review) maybe annoying. Few voice acting during CG is pure choice from developers. The real problem seem to be the frame rate drop when fancy magic/skill used.

All of this problem/sub-problem caused the game 2.9 points?

Maybe IGN overhyped the game since it's from Square Enix...
