Valve working on Counter Strike On the 360

Game trailers had an exclusive inside look at what valve has to offer this year which are TF2's new multiplayer map called Gold rush and left 4 dead the exclusive game on the Xbox 360 and PC.

But that is not all as Geoff talks with Valve co-founder Gabe Newell about the possibility of Counter-Strike 2
Which he says they are working on the Xbox version.

Have you even tried to play Counter-Strike for the original Xbox? It barely met mediocrity. It wasn't the sound or visuals, it was the controls! Only through the beauty of keyboard and mouse can Counter-Strike truly shine.

Epic should have concentrated solely on the PC version of UT3 and ignored the console(s) initially. Then they could have devoted all of their efforts to bringing out a totally new version and not just a prettier UT2004. UT3 tanked on pc cos of the consolized UI and design and sales weren't even close to spectacular on ps3, orange box pc outsold both ps3 and 360 versions combined despite it containing 2 games already released for pc running on a 4 year old engine and yet it was a new franchise for consoles and hence more value for money there. These so called trends as u put it are only true for sales on retail copies and does not even factor the huge success of digital distribution and ironically counterstrike is a steam game so your logic is heavily flawed, look a couple of post down on the number of css servers versus halo 3

^^^ do you have any idea what type of royalties are involved on making a PC game when compared to making a 360 game?...from a money standpoint, you definitely are 'sticking it to MS'...

only recently has MS started their whole "games for windows" campaign...and there are only 360 like licensing payments if the developers utilize the pay-for Windows Live for Games or w/e service...which has been completely rejected by the PC gaming community...

MS does very little with PC games, as far as licensing requirements...always has...that is what always made it more appealing than Apple...upgradeable hardware, and you only needed to register different advertising policies to advertise the game as something that can be run using MS windows operating systems...It is similar to other types of 3rd party software...in which you can go through a process to have it MS certified...but its currently not required...

MS is trying to change that, but they are not getting a lot of positive feedback about it...but the PC market is nothing like the 360, where there are all kinds of licensing and royalty payments in order to release a game on it...

way to 'slap him across the face with reality'...you obviously haven't looked into what is involved on making a PC game very much...why is that not surprising?...

CS relies on Mods, i dont know how thats going to work, CS got ported to the orginal Xbox, and it floped hard. To see them make CS on the 360 is just dumb. if the 360 had a standard HDD i would stop talking. if you played CS:S on the PC you know that the game relies on mods as well.

but many do love it. I was an RTS player on the PC before playing Shooters, but never really got into this game. I know people that would play on for hours on my school network.

Anything that is or was on the PC always has a chance on the 360 with the architecture so close.

Hey we all said the same about UT3 staying on the PC. Since it is on PS3, everybody wanted it to jump ship. I'm sure 360 fans will gladley accept this game.

I don't think CS has enough content to be released as a console title. they would have to customize/change it a lot.

Also, it would be hard to emulate the fast and precise gameplay from mouse/keyboard to controller in CS case.

But it is true. He makes the PS3 to be this disgusting pile of junk when Rockstar, Activision, EA (who he outsourced the dev of the Orange Box to, ironically), they have all expressed that they like the PS3 (Rockstar only cited the PS3 as a reason for the GTA4 delay, not a fault). Plus, his outlandish claim that they wouldn't sell well is false. They have outsold the 360 in January, and I bet they did in February (waiting for those NFD numbers to come out). This is what the rotund Newell has going for him.

Gee that's a lot of hate....and I think you contradicted yourself a bit there. Just to clarify Gabe didn't work on the PS3 port and neither did Valve (as you mentioned, it was outsourced to EA). Also I don't think Gabe said the PS3 (of L4D iirc) version wouldn't sell (although it didn't compared to the PC version), only that it wasn't really worth the relative time/effort it would take to port it (as we're talking about a completely different type of system). In fact, I don't think Gabe's programming skills have much to do with the ps3 version of anything.

I have cs source and had cs 1.3 and it is my favorite multiplayer game ever. All you above me, ill tell you why valve would want to do this. Cause CS source is free with HL 2 and this is a great way to sell more copies. Hopefully it has at least 20vs 20 like my favorite source servers. BUt yeah its easier to play FPS on a PC (minus the analog movement controls) than a console but sometims its more enjoyable on a big TV than at a desk.

Counter strike will NEVER work on a console, the key to the game is its speed and accuracy, something thats only offered with a mouse.

It's not a demanding game, the average PC will run CS:S quite happily, if you want it, get it for the PC and play it the way it's meant to (warning, you'll get your ass handed to you for a while).

PS3 has mouse and keyboard support plus it has something better than keyboard and mouse, it's called FragFX. But you're right it wouldn't work on the 360 because it doesn't have this.

Counterstrike is un-hackable, sure you can play it offline with bots but to actually play it online you have to have a legit copy or you don't get to play. Lets have a look at the numbers shall we?

Current Servers for...

Counterstrike (8 years old) 38,457 Servers
Counterstrike Source (4 years old) 31,739 Servers

Halo 3 has how many players? 150,000? Lets say there's 16 in each server, it works out to roughly 9,000 Halo 3 servers. So an 8 year old game in counterstrike has around 4x the amount of servers Halo 3 has...

Yeh, it'll never sell on PC, nobody is waiting for it and nobody has an interest in counterstrike... /end sarcasm.

One thing better be for damn sure....

They better implement a version of the source engine that is fully multi-threaded, unlike the current Source Engine 7 build that powers Half-Life 2 all the way up to episode one.

Episode 2 and Portal are powered by Source Engine build 14.....but even so, that engine isn't fully optimized for multi-threading.

In Source Engine 14, there are console options that allow you to FORCE queued multi-threading, but it is more often than not highly unstable and will cause game play to stutter.

I am shocked that Valve has not implemented it yet, even after that whole multi-core ruckus they carried on about back in late 2006.

Either way, I don't understand why the Source engine (which is extremely CPU bound), can't use the immense processing power of the PlayStation 3. Half-Life is now a game that is know for its characters and physics...which would be something that would look amazing and run in a highly accelerated way on the Cell.

It's unfortunate that we have to deal with that closed-minded dumb fatass, Gabe Newell, who hates the PS3.

I hate it when I blow something up in half-life 2....like a bunch of crates....and my fps goes down 40 or 50 frames a second because the engine isn't threading any particles or renderables or anything.

Any time I come across smoke or I blow up a whole bunch of crates, my fps takes a serious nosedive to near the 50s...where as for the rest of the game (including normal combat) I'm running at around 130 to 200 fps.

Now tell me something here.

If I can play Command and Conquer 3 on Ultra High at 1280 X 1024, World in Conflict on High at 1280 X 1024, Supreme Commander on High at 1280 X 1024....

Why must Valve feel the need to be lazy and hesitant on the implementation of multi-core threading into their engine?

I can play Half-Life 2 fine....but I can tell it's really only using one core because the game really slows down during 4 or 5 explosions happening at once and with particles flying everywhere.

Oh well.

For a game (half-life 2 and its associated mods) to remain as popular as it has since its inception, Valve owes it to us to keep the Source engine up to date and have it being able to run smoothly on current hardware.

Here's my PC specs, in case any of you had any doubts:

- Dual-Core AMD 64 X2 @ 2.5GHz

- 500GB Seagate SATA HDD @ 7200rpm

- PCI-E nVidia GeForce 8600GT 512MB GDDR3 Overclocked edition

- 2GB system ram

- Windows Vista Home Premium (I tried Windows XP for my games....the frame rate difference was less than 5 fps)

So anyways....

COME ON VALVE! You can multi-thread for the 360....what about the PC......please?
