Xbox 360 failure rates worse than most consumer electronics

It has been clear for quite some time that there is something very wrong with the first batches of Xbox 360 hardware. Users have dealt with overheating and the dreaded "red rings of death" since the system's release, with many gamers on their second, third, and even fourth systems. Users came up with ways to fix the issues, while Microsoft offered quiet hardware updates and extended warranties before finally admitting there was a huge problem and pledging over $1 billion to fix it.

"Consumers are benefiting from amazing innovation in consumer electronics; however, they also need to be aware that products just aren't as reliable as they used to be," Abernethy said. He also shared some tips on how to keep your system running well. "Specifically related to protecting the Xbox for those who already have one, the key thing is to be gentle with it and to keep it cool. Our understanding is these units should be kept vertical when in use to get the best air flow and cooling."

lol this isnt really new if anything its good news for 360 cus they managed to get failure rates down from 30-16%. This does seem to be ps3's yr day. Success for titles such as MGS4, Killzone 2, LBP, resistance2, GT5 need to be high. Especially for mgs4 since that one is 3rd party. If mgs4 does extremely well it will restore all faith from 3rd parties in ps3. That being said none of you xbox fanboys should play haters and snub mgs4 jst cus its on ps3. I honestly believe that we will NEVER know the true failure rate of the 360.

MS obviously spins their numbers, as I can ask 4 friends how their 360 is doing.. 3 have failed, and the other is fine.

Obviously it's not as bad as 75% (I should hope), but there's NO WAY it's 16%. Game sites don't have the statistical ability to get a real number, MS will never tell us how bad it is, and actual business news providers like CNN, MSNBC, etc. are still learning what a 'Wii' is, so no dice there..

I would really like to see an NPD poll on the subject of console failure, but MS, Sony and Nintendo would never pay them to reveal failure rates, so that's an unlikely option as well.

Failure rates will forever remain a mystery to gamers.

after going through three 360's i got a PS3 at launch and gave my 360 away. i always thought i would buy another 360 when they fixed the hardware problems and dropped the price. but seeing how they still haven't gotten their act together i'm now leaning towards buying another PS3. i refuse to support a company that doesn't take care of their customers.

and taking care of customers doesn't mean 3 year warranty, it means making a quality product so that a 3 year warranty isn't needed.

lol yeah i have to agree...anyone who has a launch ps3 understands what we had to go through to get to the point we're at now, and we've come a long way. I finally bought a 360 in August and have 13 games for it already, but that was 10 months of torture I went through with the media while I had a PS3 only, especially starting with the Resistance/Gears comparisons and the media thinking all games should look like Killzone 2 or else it was a flop...I'm glad times are changing because that wasn't fair at all

Ive had 3 360's 2 where replacements for the original. 1 was covered free by a warranty the other I had to pay a $99 repair/replacement fee. I never bought a xbox. So this was my first dealing with MS and it proved to be a bit of an ordeal though worth it. Except I dislike the whole XBL subscription deal as ive said many a time before.

(Note: Never have had a RRoD it was drives scratching disc's for me.)

So even though the failure rate is high, their should also mention that Microsoft has done the right thing and is repairing them.

So really their is no need to talk about the failure rate.. it was just a design error which I'm sure will no longer be a problem in the future xbox 360's with the 45nm chips.

Xbox 360 really is a pretty cool gaming system even with all the system problems. I'm still playing Call Of Duty 4 all the time and it's been amazing. I bet even a die hard PS3 fan can find one or two games they would actually enjoy on 360.

Even with 2008 shaping up as if it will belong to PS3, their is no question 2007 was 360's. Either way it's a great time to be a gamer.
I'm loving the flood of next gen games. 2008 looks like it might be bigger then 2007..with a lot more games coming out. Can't wait.

Its clear that its Microsoft's fault that the 360 has this big defective rate. All electronic equipments are tested thoroughly before they are released and then they have to give the quality control department a visit to get tested again and make sure everything is OK. I am pretty sure Ms did know of this issues before they released their system, because if they did not know of it then they have some real issues in their quality control departments. Issues that call for government agencies to step in and investigate..
This is a very serious matter and things like that that kill companies reputations.
You are saying that you laughed when u got PROD, But 99% of people will be damn pissed off. People pay money for this machines, and not 10- 20 bucks its around 400 dollars. Sure they have warranties but name an electric equipment that doesn't. You say they extended the warranty to three years, and I say this is a step in the right direction but not good enough. The warranty was not in effect yet. And Microsoft charged me, I was pissed but I paid and was later refunded when the warranty was announced. So for me I was just happy to see Microsoft own up to the problem. But I see your point.

While I can't say I'd buy another 360 like replikka if I had my time again I'd still buy the 360 as the one year headstart the 360 had ensured that while it was working there was far more for me to play on it.

Having played a mates PS3 extensively recent (he’s MIA in Mass Effect) I'm not that impressed with it, aside from Drakes I haven't found the titles very appealing or likable and graphics aside most are not significantly better than what's come before.

This gens been a real letdown so far only aspect I really liked was XBL and I'm getting tired of paying for it because no one uses teamwork or has any honour (specifically Halo 3 and CoD4).

A game console and it's games are linked like an iron chain supporting an anchor. The console is the link attached to at the anchor and the other links are the games.

If that one link in the chain closest to the anchor is defective and breaks the whole chain is defective.

I hope you see the logic in my explanation. What good are all those games if your console is in the shop because the main link (console) needed to play them is broken or has a high probably of breaking.

This is the simplest way to point it out. If the console breaks it doesn't matter if you have every game in the library. Your still on the wrong end of a defective chain and sooner or later that going to bite you in the butt.

i mean, the X Box 360 sold 10 million 33% failure rate units during the 2006.

the X Box 360 sold an additional 7 million units last year.

my roommate's 360 didn't Red Ring, but it broke down nonetheless (it stopped outputting video, and there was nothing but a black screen). Microsoft wouldn't cover it with their warranty, and he reluctantly ended up paying to have it fixed, but not before buying a *SECOND 360.

he since sold that second 360 to me. i haven't bothered to check and see if it's the Falcon chip-set, but i don't believe it is. my 360 is practically a ticking time bomb, and i'm just *WAITING for the moment when it craps out on me (remember, *ALL older 360 motherboards have that warping defect, but only 33% of them actually fail). i've had the 360 for about a month now, and so far no problems, but at least i have my PS3 to cover the gaming slack just in case it decides to go Red (or any number of the other issues the 360 has).

back to my point, can anyone tell me when the Falcon chipset 360's were shipped out?

i mean, i'm sure more than 80% of the current 17 million 360 owners are using the older chipset, simply because i don't think Falcon was released until sometime late last year.

Im on my 3rd one, its ridiculous. You wanna know what i do when theyve crapped out on me? I go buy a brand new one and then swap out the new console only and place the broken one in the new box, return it back for a refund. Problem solved, its worked everytime and im sticking it to MS in the process. I shouldnt have to do that, but they leave me no choice. Dont get me wrong, i love my PS3 and Wii but most of the 360 games do have that slightly better edge in the graphics department because developers have an easier time programming for the 360. I wish this wasnt so, but that seems to be the case right now. Personally i would like to see the PS3 kick some @ss, im getting a little sick of returning these faulty consoles back. I wonder what MS does when they receive the faulty 360s back with non matching serial numbers. lol, f@ckers. I wanna see more games like uncharted for the PS3, that game dominates. I would have to say Mass Effect, Bioshock and Uncharted are the best games and if it wasnt for those 2 games i could prolly live without the 360. My suggestion to you is that if you are gonna try the old 360 switcheroo trick, you only do it at Target or Walmart. Bubbles please, hehe.

O.K. I understand xbox was around when no one else wasnt and because of that we got a glimpse of what next gen was supposed to be. Hell xbox 360 games are great. But!!! this peice of crap system is the worst! Which led me to believe that if I dont support the system anymore that those same great games will come to a ps3 eventually. Its all microsofts fault for this because they dont give a dam until the media starts asking question and then they try to fool everyone. Its the games that have been holding together xbox 360. Thats It! If they pay money not to get this machine recalled, then a boycott is in order. I mean its 2008 and their is healthy competition now people. Dont put up with it and have multiple boxes for gods sake its plain robbery.

Is that there's stuff that breaks MORE than the 360. It's hard to believe really. All but 2 people on my Friend's List (99, I think) have had at least 1 failure.

The year that the XB360 was released. And then the media attack on the PS3 to try and sustain the XB360 lead. It all failed... when the Wii and PS3 was released - because within the first year of the competition being released, the XB360 fell behind in sales. And the heavy hitters from its direct competition - the PS3 is not released yet. It does not take a genius to guess that the Playstation brand loyalty, the RRoD problems, the Blu Ray victory - are all factors contributing to the simple fact that the XB360 is in for a lot of hurt this year. It lost the war - and the competition is just warming up.

But the biggest effect will most probably be to the successor to the XB360. It will launch in a cloud of distrust. The early killing off of the original XBox will not help also.

So to sum it all up - the XB360 was leading - and then the competition was released - stable consoles with nearly zero failure, cheaper with innovative motion control that captured the mass market, Blu Ray to capture the higher end market. In the end the XB360 is the odd one out - the one with no new tricks - and with a massive failure rate to boot.

Maybe they will learn from this. The fourth XBox will have a chance to challenge again. The next one will have one mission - to restore respect in their capability to deliver.

You know, I think I may just have fond the reason so many 360’s are over heating. Some times when a game is loading you get a disk read error with the 360, which is a problem in it self. But the thing is every time the 360 thinks it is about to get a disk read error (you can kind of hear it) it first turns the fan off.(this you can definitely hear) The big problem is that some times the game does not get a disk read error but it just keeps playing (with the fan off) now I knew about the overheating, so every time my 360 goes dead silent I know some thing is up. Obviously playing a game on the 360 when the fan is off is bad, if you don’t notice its even worse.

When I still had my 360 that happened to about 8 times and I had an Elite with the Falcon chip set, I will admit it ran cooler and was not near as loud fan wise but the DVD was still just as loud and after 2 months it started not reading Disc's and the DVD drive just stopped working, overall the 360 is poorly built the parts such as the DVD drive are cheap and poor quailty the cost for a the new BenQ drive in the 360's is only 29.99 the bearings and Disc tray are very poor quailty and yet MS still sells this console for 349.99 and SONY with the PS3 for a 40GB 399.99 and it has far better quailty. MS does not care as long as people keep buying them. All consoles go thru a upgrade thru their life span smaller chips and production cost reduction but the 360's is for a poorly designed console from the start. They maybe better with the Falcon board but the DVD drives and other parts such as the GPU and the cooling fans are still lower class electrical parts and are subject to a higher failure rate, its not a matter of if your 360 will fail but when!!!!

just received my replacement 360, my 3rd console, and it won't even turn on, called them up, got an american guy, and he said they shipped me a brand new console, it was built on january 14th, 2008, and still doesn't even boot up at all..what bullcrap.

2008 is definately Sony's year, and I expect 360 fans to get their faces rubbed in it for sure. It was definately hard having to wait for games to come out for the PS3 when I bought mine last February(07), but at least I was able to play SOCOM, which is still better than most shooters today on any platform, and it got me through the dry period. I've had absolutly no issues with my PS3 at all, and there has been stretches where I've left the thing on for 2 weeks at a time.

I still don`t understand how can some people be happy with the warranty! There`s still the hustle of calling MS, posting the thing then waiting for weeks to get it back. My box rrod`d on me twice but i could`t be bothered with the warranty hustle and just bought new one everytime. I do like the games on the 360 but as a tech kit is the worst in history, and i hope MS never makes any hardware ever again.
And RROD is not the only problem the x360 has.
16% failure rates is still to high for any standards. I just hope the ps3 gets some good games soon so i don`t have to touch that piece of sh*t again.
