"it's certainly possible for Gears of War 2 to slip until 2009''.

What we heard: With over 2.7 million copies sold in the US alone, Gears of War has been an unqualified hit. So it would be totally unsurprising if the Xbox 360 and now PC shooter got the sequel treatment. After all, Epic Games' vice president Mark Rein has fueled rumours that a sequel was in the works. As far back as November 2006, he told readers on the game's official forums that Gears of War was meant to be a trilogy. "If we can keep making quality games that fans obviously love...then why would we have to stop at three? I don't see the Metal Gear Solid, Mario, Grand Theft Auto, or Final Fantasy series (among others) stopping at three."

At last year's Game Developers' Conference, famed designer Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski basically said his employer does "intend to do a sequel" to Gears of War. Though Rein has steadfastly denied that such a thought has even occurred to Epic executives, speculation has been building that the next chapter in Marcus Fenix's fight against the Locust Horde would be unveiled soon. Given the relative paucity of Xbox 360 exclusives this year, the latest rumors have the game's unveiling being a surprise announcement at the forthcoming 2008 Game Developers Conference.

Well I know MS will push the game to 08 but I just don't think it will come put in 08, because if it does will not be the game it would been if out in 09 I want a good game if it takes longer that is okay with me as long that is better than the first.

wageslave5927d ago

And, your quote is originally from the gamespot speculation. Epic has since said "we have not announced GeoW 2".

Here on N4G, the submitter changes the title from "Gears of War 2 officially confirmed?" to "it's certainly possible for Gears of War 2 to slip until 2009"

How does this get approved?

mikeslemonade5927d ago

If Gears 2 gets annouced in GDC it will have a release date of Q4 2008. It is clear that Microsoft likes to announce games that are coming for that year.

BLUR1115926d ago

In this article he says.. I don't see the Metal Gear Solid, Mario, Grand Theft Auto, or Final Fantasy series (among others) stopping at three." lol mario hasnt stoped after 100 games.. anyway i see gears coming in 09 and not this year.

pwnsause5927d ago

Gears of War 2 officially confirmed? Source: The cover of the March issue of GamePro magazine.

Today, two weeks before GDC, the fires of speculation were restoked by GamePro, which posted a cover touting an "Xbox 360 special report" about such games as Too Human, Ninja Gaiden II, and "Gears of War 2." Many sites, including GameSpot, initially literally judged the book by its cover, assuming a publication wouldn't tout news of a game that didn't officially exist.

However, shortly after the Gears of War 2 story was posted, GameSpot obtained a scan of the article from reader Steven Taylor (aka Terran499). Rather than official confirmation of the game's existence, the piece is purely speculative, laying out "what we should expect" from a sequel that "hasn't officially been announced yet." After running down a wish list of features, the article hypothesizes that "it's certainly possible for Gears of War 2 to slip until 2009, but we think Microsoft is pressing to Epic to deliver the game by the holiday season of 2008."

The official story: As he did following Bleszinski's comments at GDC 2007, Rein quickly denied the idea that Gears of War 2 could possibly be in the works. "It is complete nonsense," he said of the article on the official Gears of War forums. "We have not announced a sequel to Gears of War to GamePro or anyone else for that matter."

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that technically Epic Games has officially announced Gears of War 2. Not bogus that the studio, having been so enriched by the original Gears that Bleszinski can afford a $190,000 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, is planning a sequel to further fill its coffers.

The delay only means that Epic is preparing for the PS3 version of Gears of War 2. Good news indeed for PLAYSTATION® 3 owners. Epic is playing the waiting game to see if XBOX 360 will falter completely before '09 and it should be obsolete by then. Microsoft is on a downward spiral and developers have taken notice.

Rest assured, Dark Sniper gurantees you will be playing this on your PS3 soon.

OK, I'm a fool, the PofS3 is on a downward spiral. Dark Sniper is PMSing today really bad and the cramps are a killer.

Jump in, Xbox 360 FTW!!!

heyheyhey5927d ago

great another idiot imitating an idiot

anyway there is still a chance that gears 2 will come to ps3 since its a third party game developed by a studio which prefers the ps3... but its unlikely since M$ will probably be pissing money into epics pockets

call me a "dreamer" or a "wisher" all you want, but there is a possibility

Kleptic5927d ago

you guys are verging on 100% retarded...

Gears of War is an IP owned by MS...Epic developed the game, but does not have control of the franchise as far as platforms go...They do have rights to certain aspects, in which MS couldn't "fire" Epic from working on the next Gears of War, without a very large payout...But Epic CANNOT just make Gears of War 2 for the PS3 without buying out the franchise from MS...and as successful as it is...its obviously not very likely...

with all that said though, it is somewhat safe to assume this game is still pretty far off...Epic is notorious for not rushing anything...and a Gears of War 2 in 2008 is nothing but rushed...it would not have any of the visual impact that the first game had...

I still am expecting Gears of War 2 with a heavily revised UE3.x to appear as a launch title for the next Xbox...It is very likely that the next Xbox will splash in late '09...and with the Halo franchise quickly turning into a NFS series for shooters (halo wars, halo chronicles, halo tea-bagging, etc.), this franchise will easily fill that void for the next system...considering UT3 is still in development for the 360, with a rumored summer release...it makes Gears 2 even less likely to fall in 2008...and if a new Xbox is ready by late 2009...why would they launch their biggest game possibly ever on a platform they are hoping you replace within the year?...

with the confirmation of MS drastically trying to shorten console hardware lifespans in order to gain significant percentages of the market...what I said makes the most economical sense...I would expect Gears 2 sometime on 2009...if 2009 is the year for the new Xbox, it will probably release on that...if not...Gears 2 will be on the 360 I guess...I will be extremely suprised if Gears 2 does fall in 2008 though...

Pacific Rim Pinball comes to Pinball FX

This could be fun as they make great tables. Go big or go extinct. Prime your senses for a neural handshake and step into the cockpit of a Jaeger. It is on you to cancel the apocalypse when Pacific Rim Pinball comes to Pinball FX on May 16.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies2d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken2d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing693d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker3d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing692d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt2d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken2d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos3d ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto3d ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger883d ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies2d ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.
