Microsoft dropped the ball this time, last generation they had a first party that really pushed the system to its limits, (FASA, Bungie, etc). They had a equal harmony of console pushers and gameplay pushers, now that balance has been overthrown, if PD2 is real it will probably be the console pusher in my opinion.

If anything the DVD factor really hurts the console, HD DVD was a perfectly reasonable option and Microsoft was set to gain greatly if HD DVD won. (licensing fees from their codecs and the HDi interface)

Problem is, HD DVD would have increased the price of the console and probably delayed its launch bringing it very, very close to the PS3 and Wii, probably killing the jump it had to get developers on board as well as consumers.

To be honest, it doesn't really matter. There were a ton of games that could only run on the Xbox, yet the PS2 still demolished it in quantity and quality. In the end only the games matter, the graphics are just a plus.

I take it as PR talk, nothing more. I own both, I have a superb hdtv and I just don't see this graphics gap between the best looking 360 games vs best looking ps3 games. Then again I don't have x-ray vision and I never counted the pixels on screen. So I guess me and my friends are just normal gamers that laugh at those who swear this or that game can't be done on the other console.

Pirate: The drives were relatively cheap at the time and Microsoft was apparently already making a profit on the 360 at launch. According to various ex HDi team members Toshiba had given Microsoft prototype HD DVD drives in mid 2005, they could have easily set things up without delaying launch, worst case by a few weeks. Given the PS3 was delayed Microsoft would still have a lead, how much? I don't know.

They may have taken a hit at launch but it could be assumed the format war would have lasted longer or even the scenario that HD DVD would have won had the 360 ensured success at a good pricepoint. Every Blu Ray and HD DVD that uses the VC-1 codec Microsoft makes a cut from, had Blu Ray also used HDi Microsoft would be making a even bigger cut. In the long run if Microsoft did something with HD DVD they could have stood to make a more money in the long run.

This is all just bullshit from all the game developers. Ofcourse Killzone2 might not be playable by X360 in its current form, there might be some effects that it cant handle, but same goes in both sides.

Games can be developed for every platform, within limits of that platform. There might be some things that X360/Ps3/Wii cant handle, but it doesnt make it imbossible to do similar game on these consoles.

Wiis wiimote is no exception. Ps3 and X360 could probably both handle similar gamepad without any trouble. USB:s are very versatile when it comes to things like gamepads. Same goes for PC games, gamepads can be inserted to PC and Keyboard and mouse can be inserted to consoles so no genre is imbossible due to "hardware" limitations.

Killzone does include really nice graphics, but thats just to cover of the book. If X360 cant handle some of the effects or graphics do something else instead what it can do. Same goes with Gears of war.

I remember when 360 was launched, some publication took one apart and added up the costs of the components, just like is dome with most electronics nowadays. The cost to MS of a launch 360 (pro model) was around $550. Adding an HD-DVD drive would have almost certainly put the retail cost of a 360 out of the reach of most people at the time. Fortunately for Sony, the power of the Playstation name allowed them to launch at a very high price point more successfully than any other company that has ever tried to launch a high priced console.

I disagree. The comments we're talking about were comments from developers talking about their product, and who would know better what is required of their product than the people making it? If anything the ones who seem to be in damage control mode seem to be the 360 camp.
It's all very confusing to me. As someone pointed out earlier in another news thread, no one argued the Sega Genesis could handle Dreamcast games, no one argued that the PS2 could handle original Xbox games - it was just common sense that new hardware would outperform old, and we've seen this continue with the PS3 vs the 360. No one's taking anything away from the 360, it's a great system, it's just older, using older tech and we've seen the PS3 pulling away with exclusive game after exclusive game.

Why is this so threatening to 360 fans? It was only a matter of time before something better came along, just like it's only a matter of time until the PS3 is replaced. This does nothing to negate what these systems have to offer gamers. Everyone knows the PS2 isn't as powerful as the current crop, but we should dismiss what the PS2 still has to offer gamers who have never experienced it, and true to form it's still immensely popular.

So what's so special about 360 fans? I'm a 360 owner and fan and I don't have any illusions about the 360 being the best game platform because it's simply not anymore. It was my favorite console by far back in 2007, but it's not 2007 anymore and the gaming world moves on. PS2 fans aren't flooding the forums with talk of why their console is the best, they're content to simply game. Why can't 360 fans? As a gamer there's something in every single console out there, and I don't care if you want to game on a 360, Atari 2600, a Wii, a 360 - I rejoice at every new gamer entering the fold but I don't understand people who have turned gaming into corporate cheerleading in the face of the facts.

Also, to those using multiple accounts to reduce my bubbles, nicely done. Down from 9 bubbles to 6 in only a matter of days. Take a bow. You strike a blow against gamers for fanboys everywhere.

Unfortunately, the ongoing inferior ps3 multiplat saga continues and, after all is said and done, the 360 has weathered the storm that was supposed to be the ps3 dominance.

Most of what is left of the diehards are the remnants that cling to the 'potential' argument, while ignoring how close the battle really is and continues to be.

Let's face it, both the ps3 and 360 are now somewhat dated, in terms of hardware. To say otherwise is getting sillier by the minute. (Of course the real debate centers around which of the two is ever so slightly better, in dated terms)

I bring up the multitude (hundreds) of proven inferior ps3 multiplats, others bring up kz2 and uc2.
Yadda, yadda. round and round we go.

Ultimately exlusive developers will hype their own gravytrain. Can you imagine Aaron Greenberg associating with anyone who speaks in less than stellar terms about the 360? What about Ken Kutaragi/Kaz Hirai? Would they admit to their loyal fans exactly how well the 360 has really done?

An exclusive developer will hype his chosen platform until the cows come home, and the starving fanboys will lap it up with glee.

Their console costs more, their multiplats aren't always as polished, etc. If Sony doesn't push their hardware, then they would never have managed to sell 23 million of them, and the 360 would already be the victor. I've always said this. The 360 is capable of a lot more than Unreal Engine 3 can offer. I don't think there's any limitation with the 360, I think it's UE3 reaching the end of its life that's the problem. Even Capcom's MT Framework engine gets better results on 360, in my opinion.

All of you are correct and it's a shame that Microsoft does not have a single internally developed game that can act as a graphical showcase for the 360.Rare actually has a good engine that was used for Banjo:nuts and bolts and viva pinata 2,the only problem is that they have not been able to produce a game that is deserving of such and engine because in my personal opinion Banjo: Nuts and Bolt looks better or is at least on par with Gears 2.Lets see if they can pull some wonders with PD2.

Resident Evil 5 looks so much better than Gears and it kind of shows that the 360 does have more potential. If FFXIII runs the same on both platforms it will show that the 360 hasn't been utilised fully in the past(even though FFXIII may not be a technically impressive as say KZ2). I think the 360 needs it's own "The Conduit" something to push to the console.

I do think that "xx can't run on the 360" is getting annoying though. They say it for preety much every game and a lot of the time their developers who only work on the PS3 and they phrase it the same way.

The Halo 3 engine is surprisingly powerful, I think Bungie really dropped the ball designing the environments. I'd love to see another Halo NOT done by Bungie and their ass-ugly environments with the same engine. There are moments in Halo 3 where the outdoor lighting is stunningly realistic.

Looking over the deferred rendering doc for Killzone 2 ( http://www.develop-conferen... I don't see any rendering techniques that aren't standard in DirectX, so it's pretty likely that if Guerilla Games had to work on the Xbox for another game, they could manage something equally spectacular.

Developers live for challenges. To say that something can't be done is pretty close-minded; it's most likely just marketing BS.

I agree that you'd see much better 360 games graphically if their 1st party wasn't practically nonexistent. Most 3rd party games get bogged down in UE3 territory, so they can really only go so far. The best you'll get on that engine is from Epic.

I also agree that Resident Evil 5 is the best looking 360 game on the market, and that Lost Planet 2 boss fight footage looks really solid, so the power is there, it's just not being utilized very well. They need a 1st party dev to dig deep into the console's guts and pull out a custom engine the way Sony does, but they just don't have the resources.

Bungie was able to keep the charm of the gameplay that made the first two title so successful, but they weren't able to keep up graphically with the rest of the high profile games that where launched for this generation.

I don't remember seeing anything in Halo 3 that was graphically impressive, but if your right and Bungie just didn't put their engine to proper use then maybe we will see something cool in ODST or some other title using the engine.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is seriously one of the nicest looking games I've seen. And yes, it is on par with Gears of War 2. And it's because they used a engine specifically made for the 360.

Guys not trying to bug or anything, but I highly recommend playing the full version of Nuts & Bolts. Especially on a HDTV.

It's a very enjoyable game. And, in my opinion, is highly underrated.

When you see games that are specifically built on the 360 such as Fable 2 and B-K.. You know the 360 has more potential than just the UE3. Because both of those games in my eyes, top Gears of War 2 in environmental detail (without a doubt on that), texure detail, polygons, etc.

It was mainly the lighting quality that struck me in Halo 3's outdoor environments. There were a few times in one particular stage of the campaign (it was the stage where you come out of the jungle and out onto a Covenant base) where I looked up to see dropships landing and the lighting looked just like a global illuminated shot from a CG movie.

It's impressive tech, just wasted on Bungie.

I think that has more to do with marketing philosophy Microsoft doesn't bash other console when marketing their games I'm sure they encourage all devs to do the same.
Its a stupid thing to say when that game could be outdone soon after in different ways of course I'm not saying what road a dev takes makes these claims untrue but the end result will be outdone. I can think of 4 games that will be on par or have a more realistic art style.

Considering the fact that Sony released second this time round, it has almost been a paranoia of theirs to establish the PS3 as a powerhouse of a console at every opportunity but given the complicated architecture, this has been hard to prove until more recently.

In fact, with all the early multi-platform games looking better on the lead platform 360, Sony have had to fight hard all the way to appeal to and convince the power-hungry gamers to get onboard.

Regardless of this fact, games are not only enjoyable for their graphics (as movies are for their special effects) and the only way to enjoy all of the good stuff is to own all the platforms required.

You provided an excellent example of Microsoft using the same type of tactics, but one thing that's being missed is it's not Sony making claims of the PS3's power. That's not what we're talking about here. We're talking about developers who are making these types of comments, and then usually as a direct result of someone asking them the obvious "Which console is better to develop on? Is this possible on the 360?" Terminal Reality was pretty damn vocal about the limitations the 360 version of Ghostbusters was putting on them, claiming they could have twice as much going on on-screen if they didn't have to worry about a 360 port later. Back then Sony wasn't anywhere in the picture so it's not like they were coached to say those things.

Kameo has over 3000 individual enemies with physics/AI onscreen at once. Show me one ps3 exclusive that has done that......shouldn't be a problem if "teh cell" is so powerful.

For the most part it depends on what engine is being used and the skill of the devs that is why you judge off of multi platform games.
Uncharted 2's hand painted visuals look great but I think there are games already competing with it if not beating it. We have not even seen the heavy hitters like Alan Wake, Beyond Good & Evil 2, Splinter Cell, Warhound etc.

And Gears 2 is by far not the best looking game of the bunch. MGS4 cleans the floor with gears graphically and with game play.Gears 2 was good looking and fun but in no way does it hold a candle to MGS4.

The uncharted one is not cutscene, its a in-game interface, as for the other two, there both fully in-game.
