"Nobody ever cried over a videogame character's death" claims film critic

Having recently viewed Max Payne and written up a review for it, where it was discussed how the film is an insult to the game and loses all of the interesting aspects of the game's intelligent and thought provoking plot, TVGB went online to see what fellow film critics had to say about it. We were confronted with one of the most insulting and ignorant statements about gaming we have ever read: "As good as a couple of its action beats are, Max still suffers from the heartlessness that makes games emotionally inferior to movies. Nobody ever shed a tear over a video-game character's death."

Well tell him to play Half Life 2 Eps2 after he has become aquainted with characters. To me it was disturbing to see Alex's father die and to listen to her sobbing. I thought it was pretty sad.

JustinSaneV25679d ago

Both when Alyx nearly died and her father...

DavidMacDougall5679d ago

End of FF10 killed me same with MGS4

Bnet3435679d ago

Pfft ... crying? That's for sissy girls.

Dark General5679d ago

I didn't play the episodes of Half Life 2 even though i have them. But i did want that old guy to die. I forget his name but he was annoying.

As for crying over a video game characters death never happened to me. Came close with end of act 4 in MGS4 though.

solar5679d ago

i couldnt sleep the night after i finished Ep.2. nothing but a dark screen, hearing Alyx crying....it was very intense. i stared with my jaw on my lap not believing what i just saw.

@ 1.2

the ending of MGS4 would have been soooooooooooooo much more epic if SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

if Snake wouldve killed himself. when Octacon was explaining to Sunny about if Snake was coming back i couldnt help be almost ball my eyes out. i could only imagine have to try to explain that situation to a lil girl like that. very emotional.

JsonHenry5679d ago

Gotta say he is right. No game ever made me cry. Other than when I was a kid and I was so angry tryin to beat Mike Tyson's punch out I cried angry tears. (and broke the contoller as well as the Nintendo in the process)

Figboy5679d ago

i still haven't gotten around to Half Life 2, Ep. 2, so, yeah, thanks...

Ren5679d ago

I was really sad at the ending of FFX however that pain was gone when Tidus came back at the very ending of the credits and at the ending of FFX-2. :)

MGS4 the ending when Otacon is trying to explain to Sunny why Snake isn't coming back, after seeing Snake put the gun in his mouth , was the only time i ever shed a tear over a videogame/movie/song i have gotten teary eyed before but never actually cried......that is until MGS4. :)

player9115679d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

Aerith in FF7 had me tear up.

The first pass through I put a lot of energy into getting her beefed up as she was one of my main characters. When she died... I had a horrible party since I primarily played with Cloud, Aerith, and rotated a third.

Finishing the game the first time was really hard.

The second time through I got it on with Tifa.

LastDance5679d ago

I started getting pretty upset when the colonel told me i was a loser and fat and should go outside and play like a normal kid :(

shingo5679d ago

In Kingdom Hearts 2 when Sora cries while saying goodbye to his friends before getting into the train to start travelling through the worlds.. It was the "Roxas part" in him that let those tears roll down. That was deeply touching.

Cryos5679d ago

when jenny dies in the darkness.....

barom5679d ago

Okay I didn't actually cry and it's really weird game to feel sad about but at the end of DMC3, *SPOILER* when Vergil choose to go back down *END*. I felt really really sad. I thought the story was kinda wack but at the end, something just clicked and it was just awesome scene.

But yeah MGS4 was awesomely sad at the end.

vhero5679d ago

Aeris on FFVII dying man that made me tear up people really dunno what they talkin about

Bangladesh5679d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

I've felt saddened by a characters death in the story plot of a game. But cried? No.

@JsonHenry
lol That first 1:30 with Tyson was a b*tch.

Shepherd 2145678d ago

i admit i shed a small tear when Seargent Johnson died in Halo 3, he'd been a strong, funny character since the frst game and to see him get shot from behind made me feel pretty sour. The music that plays as he dies conveys the atmosphere of the situation, and the cinematography helped to build the scene.

Not too many game series can build good characters that the player can actually care about like Halo, Metal Gear Solid, and other RPG's and good shooters can.

When Aerith died,people cried.

When the horse(forgot the name) from Colossus died,my girlfriend cried

Harry1905679d ago

beating me to it everytime. Just what I wanted to say except that I felt nothing for Agro. I was rather chagrin for the Colossi that I was taking down.

Aeris come back.

DeZimatoR5679d ago

Anyways, I didn't cry, but I was like 'ah f#ck.... >.<' when Otacon told Sunny that Snake needed to rest when she asked him where he was going...

And then a major 'Noooooooooooooo!' when Snake pulled the trigger and the scene faded to black...or were these scenes in the opposite order?

Bah, can't remember, but they were both pretty intense :)

arvfab5679d ago

Yeah that's the same part were I had wet eyes in the ending of MGS4. The music, the story, Otacon's words.... The only other time I was "sad" by viewing/playing something was at the end of Armageddon, when Bruce Willis talks for the last time with his daughter.

How can these people say that games are emotionally inferior?

DiabloRising5679d ago

Yeah, tell them to play MGS3, MGS4, FFVII, and Shadow of the Colossus.

Then tell them to eff off.

ReTarDedFisHy5679d ago

Those are my games of choice when it comes to... erm, crying.

INehalemEXI5679d ago (Edited 5679d ago )

FFVII Crisis Core added salt to the wound.

When dudes daughter died in Lost Odyssey too.

FFX

FFVIII - Themesong and certain moments in the game.

MGS4

I don't cry during games or movies really but there are times when Its harder to hold the tears.

/sniff

Maldread5679d ago

Agree with MGS3 and FF7, but i havn`t completed Shadow of the Colossus, so i can comment on that. As for MGS4, i didn`t like the ending at all, but thankfully a new one is coming before christmas.

TheZippo5678d ago

The death of his daughter really got to me also. Along with some of the memories that he had. That first one with the little girl may have been the worse though.

I thought the remakes has been in full production for a while now

Skuletor2d ago

You mean the game that already released almost 200 days ago now?

ravens523d ago

Be another Alan Wake 2 situation if not. I hope they're not that pigheaded. Like really, if they're that petty I won't even wait for a physical release.

LucasRuinedChildhood3d ago

They have a different publisher for Max Payne than they did for Alan Wake 2 (Rockstar instead of Epic) so there probably will be a physical release for Max Payne 1&2 at least.

ElaBosak3d ago

Rockstar is publishing. There will be physical release.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

No physical support no buy .. do not screw This up

neutralgamer19923d ago

Sure Alan wake 2 still hasn’t recovered development cost

ElaBosak3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

What does that have to do with digital release?

neutralgamer19922d ago

Ela

There are many gamers who will not buy a game if it does not have a physical release, especially for Big blockbusters. So not being on steam and not having a physical release definitely has a lot to do with the fact they have yet to make that development cost back

I myself want to buy it on steam and I will also buy a physical version on PS five or Xbox if it becomes available but I will not spend a single penny on epic Store. I just want one storefront and one game launcher. I have no other reason to hate on epic or any other storefront.

ElaBosak2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

You think the physical games market is big? Have you looked at statistics from publishers between physical vs digital sales? Physical sales are almost irrelevant.

Neither Steam nor especially physical release have anything to do with it. Alan Wake 2 is inherently niche and not mainstream by any means. It would never have gotten a big audience and that's fine. Remedy and Sam Lake got to make the game of their dreams.

neutralgamer19922d ago

I am sorry I disagree completely. Yes physical market isn’t as big as digital but it still accounts for almost 30%. On top of that having the game on steam would have meant a lot more sales. These 2 points are facts and can’t be argued

To lose money again? Do you want them to close?

ElaBosak3d ago

Wdym lose money? How big do you think the physical games market is?

darksky3d ago

Max Payne is a far better franchise than Alan Wake. This should be good.

Following the remake announcement of the Max Payne remakes, the internet exploded with ideas of what it could look like.

Just look at Alan Wake 2, it quite literally has the exact same character. This model in This article looks nothing like any rendition of max

FPS_D3TH38d ago

I don’t think about what he’s going to look like so much as I wonder as to what he’ll sound like after James Mcaffery passed away suddenly last year. He was the voice of Max Payne and it’s hard for me to imagine Max voiced by anyone else.

mkis00737d ago

Why would they need new voice-overs? I imagine the lines will be the same. It's story is part of the appeal and the delivery of the dialogue, especially during the comic scenes is iconic to me. They may have had the idea to add more lines, but I think the path is clear with him gone now.

FPS_D3TH37d ago

It’s a remake. Not a remaster and it combines both games. I’d be willing to bet $100 a lot changes.

Auron38d ago

More like max will be changed to maxine
