Will Wii Be Disappointed again?

Nintendo finally dropped the bomb on most of the remaining details on their upcoming console launch – Wii. Nintendo fans everywhere cheered over the low price point of $249.99, Wii Sports packed in, an easy to use interface, low priced virtual console games, and the fact that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will finally see the light of day at launch on November 19. While all this sounds great on paper, I'm still extremely skeptical. Even though I can't wait to get my hands on my own Wii and take Link through his latest adventure, Nintendo has a poor track record that still makes me nervous.

That's what made this op-piece interesting. He was able to show that Nintendo has a habit of coming out of the gates strong, but then game releases rapidly dwindle.

And it's true that the Wii is in a poor position for multi-platform games. Sony and MS have hi-def graphics and comparable processing...Wii doesn't. So I may pay more to develop for Sony/MS, but I have two platforms I can bring the game to. With Nintendo I'm making the game just for Nintendo.

I will still buy a Wii because I love the Nintendo games. But I'm not going to be in line on day one.

Develop for 2 platforms with incredible (and similar) graphics, or one with super-high-end graphics and one that looks last gen?

BIG problems for developers there. You'll see a lto of Wii exclusives simply out of the control scheme- Madden 07 on 360 and PS3, then Madden WII will be a different title. Meh.

First off, a guy with a name like this:

Just joking. On one hand it's bull because Nintendo made gaming for a large part what it is. And with the original games like Mario and Zelda, they have more then a PS3 which laks real great characters. I mean, MGS is the main game, but the character is not that a hype.

XBOX/360 has Master Chief from Halo and on 360 now get's Kameo and games like Viva Piniata which brings in the colourfull characters there.

On the other hand, I can understand a bit of it all. The Wii is just a supercharged Wii with a funfactor through the controller. But to pay 250 Euro for it to play lastgen games... Mmhhh. For 25.000 yen/170 Euro I would like to import one, BUT I just found out that it will be region locked while it first wouldn't be.

So actually first I wanted one from day one, that shifted to: I'll wait, get me some demopodgaming in a shop and sees when the price drops to get one.

Still the Wii will be fine I guess by getting new audience

First off, I really hope that isn't the guy's real name. I'd feel really bad for him.

Secondly, If you played mgs2 you'd know how disappointing it was to not get to play as Snake and to have to play as Raiden. Snake is a pretty awesome character. And I don't know if Kameo and Viva Pinata are real games to brag about. Kameo only got middle of the road reviews and I don't see anything special about Viva Pinata. They're not on the same level as Snake by any stretch of the imagination.

Lastly, while the wii might not get all of the same ports as the 360 or ps3, I think it will get the most exclusives out of all three because you can't replicate its controller on another platform. It would have been nice if they had upgraded the graphics some more and included at 720p support at least. Oh well, at least its cheaper so it can be the second console of people who wouldn't just buy it by itself can get it as their second console. And also, who can resist Link. Twilight Princess is gonna be amazing.

I've always thought Nintendo was always a good 2nd place console just because every half-a-year or so you get a great game like Zelda or a good Mario title.
I think Ninto would become a better company if they just became a third pary producer like Sega and only knept to handheld consoles

He makes a good point. Nintedno has good releases in the begining and then it dies out slowly. Just like the gamecube they produced no good games after it launched accept for a few. Mabby thats why nintendo is not launching super smash bros. so gamers have somthing to wait for... WHAT DO WE HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO AFTER THAT??????????????????????????

9 - I'm not worried whatsoever

If anything, this artical actually made me look forward to the Wii all the more lol. I'm so sick of the games I've seen from sony, It's driving me crazy. Originally when I got a ps1 it was for the Final Fantasy series, and over time I grew attached to MGS. Whenever I finally got ahold of a ps2 though, I was dissapointed by what I was seeing as far as games go. The Final Fantasy series ended up turning to crap once they made FFX and I ended up buying only several other games besides the MGS series. I recently recieved a gameinformer magazine and after looking at sony's games in it I thought "Wow, these games are crap". I just laughed as looked the games over, Devil May Cry 4, "Yay, a mindless slaughter game", Gears of War: Emergence Day, "Woo! another slaughter game!", Destroy All Humans 2, "Hahahaha, does it get any dumber than this?", Assasin's Creed, "Couldn't care less about that", WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007, "I've lost all hope I had in sony whatsoever". (And if I want to give MGS4 a go once it comes out, I'll be going over to my friends house to play it lol.)

Nintendo on the other hand has many games I'm looking forward to: Zelda, Metroid, Red Steel, Mario, Smash Bros., Mario Kart (I have no doubt that they'll be making it), Final Fantasy: Crystal Cronicles, Sonic, Star Fox, and not to mention the original games that will sprout from the system. Also people often look at nintendo's history as being horrible without even realizing that the NES and SNES were complete successes, and now that they've have 2 systems (N64,Gamecube) to look back at and figure out what went wrong with them and 2 systems (NES,SNES) to look back at and figure out why they did so well, Nintendo without a doubt will be just as successful as they were when they first started out.

if im not wrong the Wii has 512 flash memory( to save data)and there is a SD slot.
512 for save games and download content and classic games....and if it gets full......get out your 1gb SD card:P

I'm glad someone has finally said it. Nintendo's past two consoles: not so great. I'm not sure how I feel about playing games by waiving my arm around. If Nintendo uses virtual console to develop some new "classic" titles then I'd probably be in. Super Mario Bros. 4 anyone?

But it won't dominate. And that's what I think the writer is pointing to, Nintendo appears to be taking a similar path to what they've done before.

And you know what? It's not a bad place to be. They make money right out of the gate, as opposed to Sony and MS. They won't be the market leader but they'll satisfy their Nintendo following, make a profit, and do it all over again.

As Flaming Tide mentioned, Nintendo always makes for a great second sytem.

14 - After N64...

Nintendo's strategy has been to not directly compete with everyone else. They sell at lower prices, don't push the boundaries of CPU power (the DS has the power of an N64, while the PSP has the power of a PS2), but financially it works out. Instead, they drive themselves to innovate and carve out a market niche, along with keeping a grasp on their dedicated audience.

Sure, they were in third place for this generation of consoles Market-wise, but profit-wise they did very well for themselves, even more so than Microsoft (who lost $4 billion on the Xbox).

So they've taken hold of the low-end spectrum, while Sony's taken hold of the high-end spectrum. Microsoft's Xbox 360 doesn't really do either side, so I can definitely see the Wii taking over Microsoft's market share, and possibly putting Microsoft in third place this time around. Especially if they get more developer support for their system than with the last generation.

Microsoft sees this threat, which is why they've tried to use the Wii as a buffer (and openly support the term Wii60). They're scared that with the Wii offering high innovation at a lower price, PS3 offering superior power at a higher price, since the 360 doesn't offer either aspect they're in an odd position. Consumers might forget about them entirely in the grand scheme of things.

I must have posted in about 7 rooms and no one can anser about the online or the mic. Iv heard there will be a built in mic which is hard to beleave i heard the online wont start till 2007 man They need to release more importent things then just say "O we got all these new channels and Wii sports P.S. Wii sports? What is that for like 3 year olds MAN! We should no more about the games and about the online no one cares about the other stupid stuff or their to stupid to understand it!!
