Nintendo issues dig at Microsoft and Halo 3
29
UK boss claims Wii Sports will be defining game of this generation.
Nintendo has launched a thinly veiled dig at Microsoft and its record breaking launch of blockbuster FPS Halo 3.
Speaking at a press conference this morning in London, David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK, said: "For all the recent talk of record breaking entertainment launches, it might just be that the defining and most influential video game of this generation is a simple game of tennis that the whole family can gather around and play and enjoy together."
Although Yarnton didn't mention Halo 3 or Wii Sports by name, the "record breaking entertainment launch" is obviously a reference to Halo 3 and the "simple game of tennis" is clearly Wii Sports.

1 - While there's...
While there is no denying the success of the Wii (we have a couple in our house), can you really compare a pack-in title to stand-alone titles? It does bug me a little (as an analyst) that all major statistic companies count Wii Sports in the attach ratios.

Well it's only a pack in for the US. That being said it's still a game. He wasn't talking about sales he was implying that the general word of mouth seems to have been bigger for Wii Sports than that of H3. In Halo marketing made sure we heard about it every other second. Wii Sports your buddy's neighbors first cousin was telling you how cool it is and everyone in between.
edit: on a side note seeing that this is Nintendo saying something about a Xbox thing I can only expect a whole lot of N sucks comments. Try and keep it tame. H3 is still a great game and sold tons just doesn't have the word of mouth that all.

Defining and most influential? Wii Sports? I think not, really. Fun yes. But defining and influential game? No.

That tennis game is actually really bad. Fun for someone who doesn't play tennis, but poc for someone who does. No strategy, bad ball control, no aim, no footwork, etc.

I just want to know if there has ever been a game.. where every single age group.. and i mean everyone, from the little toddler , to a teenager, to a college student (awesome at parties drinking games etc?), to yuppies, to middle age ( i have coworkers from age 30-50 who play this game at their gettogethers ), to senior citizes that can enjoy a game, this game is good for everyone,, and i mean everyone (excluding blind people and amputess or disabled people), this is why the wii is selling so god damn much, this one game.

But to say that Wii Sports is the most influential game? Naaaawwww. That's like saying that Wii Sports is GAMING - END ALL BE ALL. No it isn't. How do you measure "influential" ? Sales, reviews, artistry, word of mouth?

And just what the hell is so special about Wii Sports? Hey, assholes. You already played the game before... Mario Tennis (N64) & Mario Power Tennis (GCN). Man, just let the Wii die already. If you want a real video game console, I highly recommend the Xbox 360 & PS3.

its prove that Wii-Tennis got more people intoo gaming.
there is no such thing as REAL VIDEO GAMES, video games are video games, nothing more nothing less.
Its like saying " Barbie in the Nutcracker " isnt a real movie, but it actually is the only difference is the TARGET AUDIENCE.
i own a real video game console and thats a Wii( im stil need to get the other 2), i can play video games on it and its meant for games.so therefor its a video game system.

Wii Tennis didn't "get people into gaming." Wii Tennis got people into...Wii Tennis! You're telling me that the people out there, that play Wii Sports (and not normally a "gamer") play Zelda, Resident Evil? My guess is probably not.

8.2 - Wii Sports
@ binard328, Wii sports got me back into gaming. I saw Wii Sports advertised online and thought, that would be a good way to get the family to do something together. Stood out in the cold and managed to get a Wii right before christmas. By far the most fun we've had at christmas in a long time. I recently went out and purchased a PS3 to go along side the Wii and I'm now getting back into gaming.

Yes H1 was by word of mouth alone I'll agree with you on that. As far as H2 and H3 I never had anyone come up to me and say hey did you hear about Halo 3? No I saw more of it on TV and magazines and pop cans. Wii Sports had as much advertising as Nintendo does which isn't much. Yet you couldn't stop hearing about it from so-and-so down the road and you see it in the AARP magazine and News casters talking about it all of which Nintendo didn't spend a dime on.

Nintendo shouldn't be arrogant. Nintendo got arrogant 10 years ago and that's when Sony took over and dominated. Sony got arrogant and now Nintendo is dominating.
I do agree that Wii Sports is the most innovative game to come out in a long time. It's a brilliant game insofar that it brings people of all ages to come together to play. My mother, grandmother, girlfriend, sister etc. would never ever play Halo 3.

God, I hope Wii Sports is NOT the defining game of this gen or I'll be forced to abandon gaming. I still don't understand what people see in Wii Sports. It couldn't keep me entertained for 30 minutes. I played Rayman Rabbids for more than 10 hours and it's still entertaining.

Yes, playing it with other people is what makes it so fun, and, perhaps, what could make it the defining game for this generation.
People, together, if Nintendo has its way, is part of what this gen is about. If Nintendo wins, you better believe the defining game will be the most fun when you have some friends over to play with you.

what a retarded comment, did i ever claim that Wii-sports players are playing those games you mentioned?
Wii-sports = a game.
so what Nintendo did with Wii-sports is getting more people into gaming.
expanding their interest is not relevant to the case that Wii-sports got new gamers in the market.

15 - Wii sports can't define a generation
Those that want the Wii so bad are not gamers and will not sustain a platform through its life cycle. Mario and Zelda might but Wii sports is a one trick pony. People buy a Wii and only play the one game. I mean the new gamers coming in. Not the people that have been playing Nintendo consoles for years.

I don't think Wii Sports will be the defining game, but it might, when its all said and done.
The defining game for an era doesn't need to be the biggest and baddest game. Think of the great games, the truely great games.
Mario 64 took place in one single castle. Ocarina of Time had 2 lakes, a river, a field, a mountain, a desert, 2 towns, and a forest. Both are widly considered to still be the best of their respective genres, though.
Neither needed to be as big as FF7 to define a genre, or a generation, and, heck, now, FF7 looks terrible and is small by the standards of some games, but it's still the defining RPG.
Why couldn't Wii Sports define something, as well, be it the sports genre, or the whole generation?
