Mario Galaxy just ripping off Insomniac's games

The charming Brits over at Kikizo sat down with Insomniac's Ryan Schneider the other day. Asked him a bunch of questions about Ratchet & Clank, and it sounds like Insomniac are rightly proud of their franchise. Also proud of R&C on the PS3, which I must say is looking pretty darn good. They're also proud of their originality as a company, though, and proud that it's influenced...Miyamoto and Super Mario Galaxy.

But I'm still sad about Psychonaut's ultimate fate. Ratchet games have sold millions and new Mario Galaxy and Ratech & Clank TOD will suerly sell millions but the game that truly deserved the sales simply flopped.

That's the problem with flamebait titles. They skew the whole article. (I'm aware it is a Kotaku title)

Many games out there take ideas from other games. I think the term "ripping off" is quite extreme. You can almost make a case for almost any game ripping off any other game developed before it.

If you think Miyamoto is some holy being that sits excluded from the world in some closet... I feel sorry for you.

The quote wasn't as malicious as some have interpreted it. This is just another case of someone trying to make sensational news where there is none.

Kotaku is slowly becoming another one of those sites. First it was the Nintendo fan club invasion, and now provoking flame wars.

From the article/insomniac:
"One that we're even extremely flattered by is Super Mario Galaxy, with their spherical worlds; we did spherical worlds in Going Commando, and Up Your Arsenal. It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy. Granted, he's doing it in a different way, but it's still a spherical world, so it's flattering to see those sorts of things."

How is that saying that Mario is ripping anything off or that Miyamoto is a hack? Awful title, but the article isn't bad itself I suppose.

he didnt really "attack" mario or miyamoto either. personaly I only dock bubbles for blatantly stupid fanboy comments.

However, I generally give and take bubbles based on if I want to continue to hear someone's opinion. Sonic 2 did the 3-D spherical world in video games I believe. (or was it the first sonic) Gotta give props to the Earth for being spherical itself though. If it was square, I think the conversation would be different.

the flat world in the sonic games is a long shot to compare to mario galaxy. the worlds [complete with objects and enemies] in going commando are much closer to mario galaxy. in fact the level design almost seems like they could be used interchangably.

All they were saying is that they would like to think that the work they did had influenced someone as genuinely brilliant as Miyamoto, its hero worship, they never said he definitely did "copy" Ratchet, just that they would like to think they had a hand in inspiring the grand master of game design.

That would be the case. Nintendo thought of that concept before 3-D even came around with Yoshi's Island. On top of that the Mario 128 demo they tried to incorporate it but couldn't get it to work to their satisfaction. This is not something that Insomniac invented.

While I don't think that the comment was anything derogitory at Miyamoto, they should do some research before making such claims. All those people who are now praising Insomniac for being such a "influence" should also do your homework. There was gaming before X-Box and Playstation, even if you don't want to believe it.
