Microsoft Comments on August NPD

Following the thoroughly impressive August results from The NPD Group, Microsoft was the first of the big three console manufacturers to chime in on its performance for the month.

The main highlights were outlined by Microsoft as follows:

# Xbox 360 unit sales are up 63 percent, versus an 18 percent decline for PS3 and 5 percent decline for Wii month over month

# Xbox 360 outsells PS3 more than 2:1

# Xbox 360 software sales are more than PS3 and Wii software sales combined

# Madden NFL '08 on Xbox 360 outsold all other versions of the title, including the PS2 by more than 250,000 units, and PS3 by more than 560,000

No they were not bragging about ripping anyone off. They are clearly stating that sales for the system have remained strong because people think they are getting a value out of the system, as a result of positive demand they were able to keep the starting sale price. You look at the PS3 and they aren't doing so well with sales even after dropping the price.

IF this was the PS3 and Sony saying this you would be all about it. Sheep.....

3 - Thats what I have been saying for months now....

What is amazing to me and beautiful for 3rd party developers, is that regardless of who's numbers you believe in regards to total console sales....VG charts, NPD, Nextgenwars, ect.....THe fact remains that the 360 has sold more games than the Wii and the Ps3 combined....Think about that folks....let that sink in....

360 3rd party games consistantly sell more copies on the xbox 360 than the PC, ps3, ps2, and Wii.....

What do you think that tells developers? LOL.......

Thats why the 360 gets the most exclusives and the superior 3rd party games....Its simple math....

So we can debate of total console sales all day long....What we can't debate is which console has the best games and sells the most games....Its not even a debate...its a land slide in the 360's favor clearly. WOW

And Halo 3 will doubtless rake in some buys for the 360. Not to mention the best-selling game of the month (if not year).

Still, the Wii is looming over the 360 like a tidal wave. The 360's strategy is good, but MS will have a very difficult time holding off Nintendo this holiday season. We'll have to see.

What I THINK you were trying to say is that the Wii isn't a next-gen console in that it doesn't compete with the 360. The way I see it, for every consumer that says "Will I buy a Wii or a 360?" the two are in the same market. Saying they're not competing- while done frequently nowadays- is complete BS.

Wii is next-gen but developers are "not" going to think to themselfs how can we make this game- thats going to lead on the Wii(because it sold more consoles) work for the PS3 and 360.

Its hardware is last-gen thus it being in a different market(like the PS2 or Xbox).The Wii fanbase is in a different demographic and will not effect the power house market, even if the Wii's demo was the same its hardware will cause the devs to adjust their stradigies to cater to two leaders at once so to speak.

The xbox 360 did keep its price for quite a while....

But hey, at least it had a pretty reasonable price unlike the ps3 and the wii. The wii was selling for £210 with a game, while I bought an xbox 360 for £300 with a game, I won't even mention the ps3....

So in the end I thought the 360 was quite a steal.

great news for the 360 and an incredible response to the 360 price cut plus the release of Madden and Bioshock. I am sure that Sony are very envious right now, as their 'price drop' (aka price switch) did not drive up demand for the PS3 as much as they wanted, or needed. I do expect though that the PS3s sales will increase next month with the release of Heavenly Sword, IF they market the game well.

Everyone knows that things only are looking up for the 360 from now until the end of the holiday season. A great games lineup and a price drop means that the 360 is in a great position to do very well this holidays, which is extremely crucial for the future of all consoles.

It sure as heck drove up demand, because the PS3 60GB is all but sold out. Which is what they wanted. I'm pretty sure they did that to reduce costs by getting rid of the EE for backwards compatibility, instead switching to the cheaper software BC.

the 360 is aelling more games than Ps3 and Wii combined. Thats what its all about. I said along time ago nobody buys games for the Wii, they are going to by Mario games(Kart, Smash Brothers, paper) Zelda games and Metroid games then a straggler or two a year (Wii Fit). The360 is a game console so the people buying it are buying games. The Wii is bought buy girls and people that dont really play video games that much, thats the Wiis major consumer, those people dont have no idea what FinalFantasy is or Metal Gear Solid, Halo, or Kotor, or even GTA. And on the day that they do they are gonna want to play it on a Ps3 or 360.

that MS should be bragging about keeping their price point the longest considering they didn't have competition for 12 of those 21 months. Since, the price of components drops over time, it should have been easy for them to drop their price a mere $50 or am I missing something here?

I guess the same can be said for the PS2, whose record of 19 months, they beat. They also were out a year before the competition.

18 - Couple of things I notice.

These two things happend to me last week. 1st- A buddy of mine got married and on their wishlist was a WII. I ask him damm you going down to a WII, (he is 29). He said "it's not for me, it's for my wife. She works at a high school and all the kids talk about it and now she wants one".
2nd- A guy at work, hardcore sony fan told me today "Hey I might have to get a 360 soon" I was shocked. I ask why? "because all I see on commercials is 360, 360 games, and at the end of every commercial is a big 360 logo with that titiin noise at the end". I ask him if one of them was bioschock, he said "yeah that game looks crazy, and I hear its a good game". I told him I've only played the demo and I really really liked it alot. (Haven't bought it yet) I also ask him what he thinks of halo3, he said "Oh man I hear it's coming soon hu" I said yeah, he said "thats why I want a 360 soon" the last thing I ask him was, wazz up with ps3, he said "to much money and no games I want to get"

Point being is that WII attracts other types of gamers, from the never play video games croud. To the NIN hardcore Mario loving Crowd. Just like DUCK Hunt did back in the 80's. Which I was proud to be a owner of back in 86 for me. To the 360 which attracts videogame players in general from casual gamers to hardcore gamers. Of course priced at 350 and up doesn't help much. To the PS3 which I think has kinda forgotten the crowd that made them #1 in the first place. And by looking at sales at NPD with just 1.7million in 10months is hard to swallow comparing to the PS2 which in their first 10months had sold over 6million consoles in NA alone. WOW how the tides have changed.

It might have been different if Sony wasn't trying to sale BLURAY and if they could have transitioned away from the PS2. While it's great the PS2 has this killer library of games and is cheap with a huge install base, it takes away from the PS3's sales in addition to the whole BLURAY movie marketing. The other major problem is they didn't show developers much love. Let's not forget the pure arrogance of the executive administration for the company...
Wonder what will happen if BLURAY loses the war with HD?

The funny thing is MS has been dropping it's killer apps. I was movied by Advance Warfighter, Oblivion, Dead Rising , Gears of War, Forza Motorsport 2, Saints Row, Crackdown, Fight Night Round 3, and now Bioshock (Which I wasn't going to get but I'm glad I got it killer game, killer graphics.) this is just to name a few I own have have had fun playing.

So why would I want to wait for the PS3 and Sony to get their act together? Microsoft is delivering now. If Sony doesn't drop there top guns soon Microsoft's install base is going to be too large for Sony to catch and we all know how that card plays out. (Xbox costed MS a lot of money Dreamcast died out. PS2 crowned king.)

#2 binkery, bless your heart lil fellow you tried to spin this news but really that was pretty weak, better luck next time, for all the negative bs sonykids throw at the 360, it still kicking the ps3 ass in hardware sales and most importantly, I'm just glad to see that 360 fans do more than talk, we are buying videogames and although the Wii outsells the 360 its still very clear that 360 is where the games are, the market that the wii caters to is huge, but they arent likely to go out and buy many games, 360 library is strong and 360 fans are very passionate about games, micro knows this and you can bet those greedy bastards will continue taking advantage of us by delivering great games= call us crazy but we will continue to buy those great games, its a shame us poor "xbots" dont know any better=

I agree that is interesting. I think it shows how EA is shooting themselves in the foot with their advertising. Unless you went out and looked, you wouldn't know Madden was on any other console than the 360.

I also think its interesting that so many 360 owners are buying a casual game. Most people here say the 360 is a hardcore system, but sports games sell like crazy on it, and sports games are anything but hardcore.

I wonder if we'll see EA changing their stratgy soon and advertise their games on all consoles, because Madden is so lopsided, its not even funny.

360 gamers buy games. Sony gamers surf the net and watch movies. I wonder what big name developers think of that. If I was a dev why the hell would I waste my time f-ing with the cell and getting low sales. I rather spend my time and make a game on the and max my profits by making the game for 360 and porting it to the PS3. OMG sounds like xbox1 and PS2. I know when I had my xbox1 I got tired or playing tired PS2 ports. If I had a PS3 I would be tired of playing tired 360 ports. SONY GUYS GO BUY SOME GAMES AND SUPPORT YOUR CONSOLE.
