Square Enix: Nintendo saying no to cross-platform MMOs

Given Nintendo's spotty online gaming support for the Wii so far and the lack of a hard drive, owners of the system likely aren't especially optimistic about controlling massively multiplayer online role-playing games with the motion-sensing Wii Remote anytime soon. Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka further ruled out the possibility during his keynote address at the Austin Game Developers Conference today.

Cross-platform MMOs just isn't how Nintendo rolls.

Nintendo's main strategy with the Wii is to do something different than the competition. That's why I expect we won't see a CP MMO on the Wii unless it's made by Nintendo.

That, and using the Wii remote in a game based around leveling up would be very, very tedious. Mouse clicking on PC is bad enough; constant arm waving would be downright painful.

I think there strategy is to sell a cheap out of date machine in order to gain market share in the console race. So far, it's working fantastic.

Man I still can't believe its winning. Come on, it isn't even that big of an improvement from the Gamecube. Not to mention that there are only 3 major titles worth looking at and one is released already.

1. Metroid Prime 3- proven to be good.
2. Super Mario galaxy- still need to wait.
3. SuperSmashbros Brawl- another to wait for.

Well, I don't really know how you can play a MMO when you need friend codes and everything. Nintendo needs to come out with a better system, but with sales going the way they are, they really have no motivation. Now Sony, being in third place, is really making an effort. Microsoft is also making an effort, extending the olive branch that is the RROD 3 year warranty. Nintendo has no need to move fast cuz their console is selling like hotcakes even when there are no new games on it.

I don't think its much of a loss, really.

MMOs on PC are for me. I'll never have one for a console, and if this takes away development time from a genre I wouldn't want on my Wii, anyway, and pushes it to something I might want, I'd say that's good for me. Other Wii owners might not like it, but to each his own.
