American Sales: 360 Outsells PS3 while Lair & Warhawk Enter Top 10

Sales across the board were quite interesting this week. Compared to last week, hardware sales were up significantly, and the three current generation consoles (Wii/PS3/360) saw pretty big shakeups in their top ten software for the week:

1---Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
2---Bioshock
3---Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08
4---Wii Sports
5---Madden NFL 08
6---Blue Dragon
7---Warhawk
8---Lair
9---Wii Play
10-Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08

-Metroid Prime 3 had a much better launch week than Metroid Prime 2 did - 314k vs. 139k. This is even more impressive considering GC had 2x as many users in November 2004 as Wii has now, and that Prime 2 launched in November, while Prime 3 launched in August. If Galaxy and Brawl show the same type of generation to generation growth (2.25x better sales), then Nintendo is going to make alot of money.

- PS3 is approaching respectable Americas (US,Canada and a bit extra) sales. If it can do 55,000-60,000 a week for a while in the Americas, the business ecosystem of PS3 will improve quite a bit - at least in the West.

Metroid is a famous Nintendo game ans Metroid Prime 3 a famous sequel on the best selling next gen console Wii and yet it's sdebut is weaker than a new IP like BioShock.
Both are superb hardcore games but this proves one thing: Wii is becoming more and more casual and less hard-core. In a few weeks Metroid will leave top 10 while Wii Sports and Play remain forever.

This is sales data for the week ending Sept 1st. Bioshock was released Aug 21st while Metroid Prime 3 was released Aug 27th (and actually in stores on Aug 28th). So while Bioshock was out for that entire week, MP3 wasn't. It began shipping on the 2nd day of the week and wasn't available in stores until the 3rd day.

Speaking on debuts, it would be more accurate to compare Bioshock's sales from Aug 21st-Aug 28th to MP3's sales from Aug 28th-Sept 4th (or even Aug 27th-Sept 3rd).

I don't get that statement for it's more than the 360 (78k), PS3(48k), PS2(around 50k), and PSP(around 50k). I guess maybe in comparison to the Wii (122k) and DS (111k) then it doesn't look to hot.

The sentence in article was:
"If these sales were sustained for four weeks, it would be a pretty interesting month - Wii would be at 490k(!), DS at 444k, 360 at 312k, PS2 at 220k, and both PS3 and PSP would see sales at 192k, while GBA slowly continues to slowly die off with sales of 81k. "

So GBA sales were only about 20k in their charts. He just speculated how much monthly sales could be according to these figures.

Agreed. I wasn't expecting Blue Dragon to make it to top 10 and was surely expecting to see Warhawk sell much more than Lair. But as Meus Interpretation said, these are retail sales and Warhawk's PSN sales might be way highers.
Still, I'm with you on both.

Another thing that surprised me was Metroid. I was expecting a half million sales at least for a sequel from a famous franchise on Wii, the hot chocolate console of these days.

It's funny how when I write a totally PS3 story people say I'm a PS3 fanboy while when I write a 360 story they say I'm a totally 360 fanboy.

My first title had all 4: Metroid Prime 3, BioShock, Warhawk and Lair but it was too long and I shortened it and made it more meaningfull. Write now the title means "While 2 PS3 games enter top 10, Xbox 360 and it's games outsell both while both PS3 and 360 are being outsold by Wii and Wii games".
I believe you both agree that it's way too long and unsuitable.

Also, I love both PS3 / 360 and if anything, I'm an anti-Wii fanboy.
End of my rant :)

Well, I have said before in blog and forums that I don't have PS3. Currently I only have Xbox 360 and I'm enjoying BioShock right now (Atlas is calling, gotta go).
But I do play Wii and 360 since I work at a local gaming magazine and we have the systems and so far, Wii has been the biggest disappointment for me except for the amazing Metroid Prime 3 and to a lesser extent Elebits and Rayman Raving Rabbids.

I don't have a PS3 but that doesn't mean I haven't chosen HD side. I'm with Blu-ray and that's why I made that comment.
Also, I like PS3 the most but I don't have one because I was waiting for Heavenly Sword and Lair. I'm planning to get both PS3 and Wii before end of September. (That sweet sweet Metroid Prime 3 finally persuaded me into getting Wii, everything about that game from story to controls to gameplay is awesome. The only better game I had seen this year that was better than Metroid 3 is BioShock which I play and worship right now :)

Xbox 360 software titles will more than often out-sell most PS3 software titles because there are 6 times more Xbox 360's in the homes of Americans than PlayStation 3's. So you can't compare the quality of games using sales figures as justification.

I feel at this point I should point out that according to VGChartz, The 360 has been outselling the PS3 in Europe for two weeks running. I was considering posting that as an article, but eventually decided against it, seeing as the European VGChartz figures are not at all reliable.
Still, it means there is no evidence that PS3 sales are higher worldwide. According to VGChartz, it's now just Japan.

I've read a few articles on how the 360 is beating the PS3 in sales in the UK, which is Europe's largest market. Yet somehow, you always see Sony fans claiming that the PS3 is leading the 360 in Europe, without any evidence to back up their claims. So far, Sony only has the Japanese market.

not even bad reviews of both Dragon games have slowed down the sales for the software. I was wondering if all the negative press online would affect sales but, it doesn't appear that IGN and the rest of the sites have that large of an impact on sales.
