Nintendo Nixes AO Manhunt

Yesterday when news broke that Manhunt 2 had received a preliminary rating of Adults Only from Take-Two, Kotaku shot a quick email off to Nintendo seeking comment on the issue.

Today they've confirmed that if the game's final rating is Adults Only it won't be showing up on the Wii... or any of Nintendo's systems.

Just an hour after Nintendo of America reminded Kotaku that they don't allow Adults Only rated games to come to their systems, Sony Computer Entertainment of America has confirmed that the same is true for them.

For questions or comment regarding the rating of Manhunt 2, please contact the publisher, Rockstar. Currently it's SCE's policy not to allow the playback of AO rated content on our systems.

So Rockstar only has three choices now: They can either kill the game, rework it to try for a lower rating or submit an appeal to the ESRB's board and argue that the game doesn't deserve such a high, 18-or-older rating.

Well, I believe that if a game is rated M, than younger players can play that game with adult supervision in mind. If a game is rated AO...well, I think it explains itself :). But like you people, I was really looking forward to this game. I never played Manhunt 1, and with the controls that the wii offers, it would turn out to be a very interactive game.

This sucks, i actually looked forward to playing this. This was going to be the only other game rated higher than teen that i had ever played on a Nintendo console (Eternal Darkness being the other at rated M). I guess the question now is if Rockstar will delay and edit the game or if they will try to sell it themselves. Assuming that Nintendo or Sony(really surprised Sony said no too) doesn't try to block it from the console somehow.

the part that really bothers me is that Nintendo finally has this parental lock and its like they don't even mention it or forgetthat The wii has this function.

yeah the whole age thing is retarded 17 isnt diferent from 18 and not that much different from 21. but i know in US. its the whole/vote/smoke/join the army thing, at 18.

I think, Rockstar needs to rework it, and release it on the 360, and let MS buy them, arent they selling anyways. a great, original game on no platform isnt gonna look good for investors

the good thing bout ms is that there isnt one stand that is set in stone, if it means and edge or good business, ie profits, they will adapt. and an excusive r* title they will love. especially if its banned on its competitors.

not like bill and co. is unfamiliar with Jack Thompson and lawsuits.
Now that i think about it MS and Rockstar fit and make sense. a popular hardcore developer that makes games that everyone loves that is no stranger to lawsuits.

and MS, who has its own reserved courtroom, and is on Thompsons speedial number 4 right behind Rockstar. god. and the puritian coaition.

I can't believe this!
I wasn't originally going to get this game; I thought it would be too violent and to just act out the violence had me a little concerned, but I decided to give it a try.
What's wrong with Nintendo AND Sony? Sony markets to an older crowd to begin with. And now, they're saying that they won't come out with a game that is meant for eighteen and up? What older crowd are they expecting?! And, Nintendo is expanding their gaming radar to hit more and more adults. Adults, mind you, that aren't hardcore gamers but may occasionally enjoy a horror movie or two. Also, adults who are responsible enough to not play a game that may disturb them. With this new level of interaction, this game would sell huge in that market.
If the game is going to have that terrible of an image, just hope it doesn't sell; don't go blocking it from your hardware. Hollywood wouldn't do this to a movie coming out straight to DVD. What people do at home, privately, is obviously up to them. When will the console-makers realize that kids aren't the only ones buying their hardware?!
Alas, T2/R* probably saw all of this coming and were hoping for there to be a loud enough ruckus-an internet-implosion. But, Nintendo and Sony really dropped the ball on this one. What were they expecting the second-time around, a parody?

if u look at SCAN 4 it describes 1 level as AN ADULT MOVIE THEATER WHERE YOU FIGHT WHILE A ADULT MOVIE IS PLAYING ON THE BIG SCREEN..

i believe thats the ONLY scene in the game that made it AO from the start.. maybe if they make it SOFTCORE they can save the M rating and not loose the whole atmosphere..

but kinda weird cause GOD OF WAR had naked chicks that u had sex with no?

also in SCAN 6 if u look at FUNCTIONALITY it says WIFI, as well as A DS + logo.. whats that about? and it allows classic controller.. thats kinda lame

What's wrong with Nintendo? I thought they want to expand the wii to not only younger but an older audience!!! This is ridiculous. What's the point of having AO rating if nobody is willing to accept a title with that rating. This game is not a porn game so why stick it with an AO rating. It doesn't make sense. We have come to a point in censorship that nothing can be deemed safe to experience. Pretty soon all things people enjoy will be censored to the point where we have to hide it from others just so we can enjoy doing it.

ESRB and FCC and all other depratments that Censor our products are just a band-aid on to what the real problem is. There is no longer Parental supervision given to our kids and due to this fact we all pay the price.
