ELSPA praises ratings system following Manhunt 2 ban
9
ELSPA director general Paul Jackson has said that the decision taken by the BBFC to ban Manhunt 2 from sale "demonstrates that we have a games ratings system in the UK that is effective".
Earlier today the BBFC said it had rejected PlayStation 2 and Wii versions of Manhunt 2.
It's the first time a game has been banned by the BBFC since Carmageddon in 1997 - a decision that was subsequently overturned on appeal, which is an option still open to Manhunt 2 publisher Rockstar.

Banning a game does not show the worth and power of a rating system, it shows its inadequency and weakness in giving propeer rating. And banning a good game like Manhunt 2 is bad for industry and so, its bad for everyone.

Agreed, If you don't have a rating for a game then you should make one. People should be allowed to buy what they want and limiting that is just a ridiculous. Let people know what kind of game they're getting but don't ban people from getting it.

I won't comment on the legalities of it. All I know is I won't be buying it. Games like Gears of War and Resident Evil 4 have all the violence I care to look at.
Video game motto for life: Gameplay over gore.

Gameplay over gore, yes, but violence just happens to be part of some of the best games ever created. You mention Resident Evil 4 as if its gameplay was bad, when it fact it was a breath of fresh air to the franchise and received several reviews highly praising its gameplay. And the original Manhunt was original as well. Definitely not everybody's cup of tea, but original nonetheless.

Yea that's a good point. If the "rating" system can't give a game a rating what's the good of it?

4 - ELSPA? What are you talking about?
A ban on Manhunt 2 does not show an effective rating system at all. It shows an "effective" censorship system.
Movies like Hostel & Saw Trilogy are no less intense that what is in Manhunt.
The guys & girls at BBFC clearly misunderstand the market they are assessing.

6 - There seems to be a concensus on this forum
that the rating system in combination with parents common sense is the best way to prevent kids from playing games like Manhunt2.I respect that view, but disagree strongly and this is why.Taking the view that its o.k for games devs to push any level of violence and gore they like towards the kids; and believe me the publishers know under age kids are the big market, shows a total lack of corporate responsibility and Rock star is at the forefront of this.As parents its important we take such issues seriously, but equally so should the developers of such mindless violence.I'm all for freedom of choice and speech, but with these rights comes collective responsibility, parents and the rating systems can only do so much. Also i have read a few posts suggesting that these games do not harm kids, let alone adults.I would suggest, that this is very difficult to prove since it would require a particular set of circumstance and situations to arise before the game scenarios may be acted out.It does appear however, that it is happening more frequently.
