The Nintendo's core worried, can Red Steel 2 help?
32
Nintendo Dpad writes:
"Many third parties this generation just are not hitting the target with their core games. Many are changing genres and core mechanics to satisfy the casual audience who might buy the game. Most third person shooters are going on-rails, sports games are getting "stylized", and ports -although getting better- are still ports. Sales are starting to show that Wii owners are getting sick of it, but can Red Steel 2 change this?"

Red Steel 2 just needs to correct where others have failed. Why more third parties haven't done this is the question.

Well even if a game was made from the ground up for the Wii, the install base is not doing their job in buying great games. They are spending more money on Wii Sports and Wii Fit than on games like Mad World, Goo, Muramasa, Red Steel, Dead Space: Extraction, and even Metroid 3. The same goes for DSi, more people spend money on Pokemon than on GTA: Chinatown, The Day Ends with You, Kingdom Hearts, and Professor Layton.
I'm going by sales figures since the article fails to mention that with such a huge install base, the question should be; Is the Wii failing to sell hardcore games instead of the other way around of developers making hardcore games.
Square Enix has made more games on the DSi and Wii combined than any other brand (Playstation & Xbox) this generation and yet those sales are pale in comparison to games released on other platforms.
Where is the money?

Your first problem is going by sales figures. You should be looking at profit.
You don't find it odd how Nintendo first party games not only sell the most, but keep their value the longest with no price-cuts and high trade in value?
To get Nintendo first party sales you must, as EA's John Riccitiello once said "rival Nintendo on their own platform"
Are third parties really doing this?

FarEastOrient you may be right about the Wii but not the DSi. You should know the sales figures of Dragon Quest IX. It's sold over four million and is expected to do five million by the end of the fiscal year. Which means it will outsell both the Playstation Dragon Quest entries(it's already passed VIII in Japan). You can compare it to Pokémon but Pokémon outsells nearly everything, no game on the PSP has matched Pokémon numbers.
Also Professor Layton has sold a couple of million and happens to be Level 5's best selling franchise.
The one thing Ubisoft need to do for Red Steel 2 is advertise it, which I doubt they will do. I'll be picking up the game anyway.
But just to address the title, I'm not worried, there's plenty of good games coming in the near future.

I actually just recently played The Conduit, and funny enough, I didn't even like it as much as the first Red Steel. I expected to really like the Conduit, but it was kind of lackluster. The level design was just really poor. Very generic and empty with repeating corridors over and over. There were some really awesome weapons, though. But the game had some serious design flaws. I'd give it like a 6 or so.

FarEastOrient, The biggest problem with your opinion is it is based off of a lack of knowledge of how gaming has worked... You act as if install base matters. You do understand that with 100 million consoles God of War 2 only wold to 2% of PS2 owners? Or that Rugrats for PS2 outsold God of War 2? Of course you don't know that, but its a perfect example of why you are wrong...
I also love how you pull up million sellers and call them failures... Anyone can spin sh!t. Hey more people bought Wii fit than bought a PS3 console. Guess Sony is letting the hardcore down right?
Then you actually want to bring Square up and act like they've offered nothing but AAA must own with a DS por on Wii and a Choco dungeon game.....Do you even own a Wii or play Wii games? No of course not. You just name off 1 5 hour black and white game that PS3 owners wouldnt support either and a Rail shooter in a long line of Rail shooters and act like Both should be selling 20 million copies because you some how think that is how console gaming works. It doesnt and it never has.
You do know the best selling PS2 game as only 15 or so million out of 140 million consoles right? Look before you post any more BS you made up. Take an hour or so to look into what you are talking about.
You'll fit in good with the idiots of this site, but they'll be the only ones to take you seriously when anyone who tracks sales and games can see you are clueless...
BTW DQ9 is otw to 5 million in sales,, So much for that point too...All that text and not a valid point to be found because you cant be bothered to get a clue.

yes there is some gems like batman:aa but having like 1 game a month and claim to have the best line up ever is wack.
plus now when you play a game , its so easy and if you press start the game is over. and people are really proud for paying 60-70+tx for this

Silent Hill, FF:CC, NSMB and the COD4 port make for a stacked end-of-the-year lineup on Wii.
In addition to RS2, we'll get Other M, NMH2, Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment 2, Gladiator A.D. and Grinder next year...and that's just the stuff we already know about.
If you're a core Wii owner, now is a good time.
As for RS2, it looks good so far. Ubi could still screw it up, but it's good that they're taking their time with it.

5 - This gen does suck and i am an original launch day Ps3/Wii owner.
I have about 20 Wii games and about 14 PS3 games. Wonder Why?? Because alot of the HD era games are just eye candy.
Yeah Uncharted, KZ2 and MGS4 are great, but so are Twilight Princess, SMG, SSBB, Metroid Prime 3 and Muramasa. My problem with this gen is that devs DO NOT take a risk period anymore. On PS3/360 you have shooter after freaking shooter. (Wow) and on the Wii you have crappy 3rd party support.
This gen ruined RE5, which was okay but felt horrible compared to RE4.
They wanted it to feel more like a damned shooter instead of a RE title.
*on topic*
Successful 3rd party Wii games do over 1 million in sales which is good for the Wii. Red Steel 1, GH, RockBand, Shaun White, CoD: W@W, RE4, RE:UC have all done great numbers on the Wii so it is possible to sell on the Wii.
Wii owners just got Dead Space Extraction and Muramasa, and upcoming Silent Hill and RE:DC so were cool. Plus NSMBW is coming. To me that is more than Im getting for PS3 this holiday after Uncharted 2, Demon Souls and Tekken 6.

bigjclassic -- There have been some risks, but on Wii they've been hit (NMH) and miss (MadWorld).
I think we may have been spoiled by last gen. Console FPS really came into its own, the sandbox genre exploded, and we still had developers making things like Shadow of the Colossus and Killer 7.
We've had some classics this gen, no doubt. The last few hours of Metroid Prime 3 were an almost religious gaming experience for me, Bioshock kept me up on all nighters, 70 hours of my life were spent on Twilight Princess, and I loved Batman: Arkham Asylum.
But on the whole...you're right. FPS after FPS is boring. Developers haven't brought their A-game to motion controls.
OTOH...I have high hopes for a few Wii games.
RS2's swordplay looks promising.
And Other M will be the first old school, third-person Metroid since 1994, not to mention the first true 3D/third-person console 'Troid.
[TBH, this might be the last truly big classic series to have its classic gameplay style go 3D. The Prime games were awesome, but I've been waiting for a third-person, modern Metroid...well, since 1994.]

not only this but a lot of game get good high score like 9.3 out of 10 and people talk sh!t about this. and when you play the game, its feel like it deserve less
back then when a game gets like a 9, it a must buy absolutely. and if it got a 7 it was a good game.
but now a game that have a 7 is mediocre and a 9 is not good enought

I agree completely, there is a complete disconnect between main stream game 'journalists' and the main stream consumer. Which is why generally I take what IGN, Gamespot, and the like with a grain of salt. Read reader reviews, I feel they give a better grasp and opinion on games.
@Evil: If Other M is anything like Super Metroid then it just might end up being game of the generation...IMO, with only The Wii Zelda having the potential to outdo it..which would be a tall order even for Nintendo.

Arius -- I honestly wasn't too hyped for the game at first. But then I kept going back to the E3 trailer, and the more I watched, the more I liked what I saw.
This has the potential to be a watershed game for Nintendo. Not only for being the last of their "big 3" to go third person/3D, but the added plot and voice acting are a really, really big risk. We saw aspects of that in Corruption, but this will exponentially expand on that. This is big N's gift to the "mature" market segment.
It'll either work and be a possible game of this gen, or it could fall on its face. The track record for both Nintendo and Team Ninja is on the side of the positive, though.

8.1 - Killzone 1 sucked
But did Killzone 2 suck? This game looks as though the whole process has nothing to do with the first one. Motion Plus is a requirement and Ubisoft has had enough experience (I believe) to make this an enjoyable experience.
I never played the Red Steel 1 so I don't have an opinion of it either way. Did it suck? maybe. Did it not suck? Maybe. Do I care? Nope. Because Red Steel 2 looks pretty bad ass and I'm looking forward to it.

Tastunoko vs Capcom, NMH 2, Sin and Punishment 2, new excitebike, and New Super Mario Bros make me laugh at the author. I don't have time for all these games and my backlog. If I get COD MW it's even worse. Muramasa, MP Trilogy and A Boy and His Blob just came out too and the former already took 30 hours from me. Red Steel 2 is just icing on the cake.
We're doing fine. Wish I had more time to play all my wii games. The only time I choose the ps3 is for sf4 or blazblue or lair or LBP. I have 41 wii games in comparison. The only core that worry about nintendo don't have a wii or never got into theirs. New gen values vs old gen values are what distinguish nintendo's core from the modern hd console users and most commentaries like this focus exclusively on new gen values in their assessment. \

Yeah, COD4 with fully customizable IR/pointer controls could be a problem for me. I mean, I haven't even gotten through the Prime Trilogy. At this point, I just want to do a ton of exploration in those games, not a speed run.
Add in COD4? With the control options of Conduit (I'll pick better control over eye candy any day)? FPS isn't even my favorite type of game, but that could be too good to pass up.

Sadly without the gameplay videos I can't decide whether to get COD. Or even the conflicting options of wii speak (in a team game it's much more important to me, skipped for the conduit). And the aim in Quantum of Solace was awful so I gotta see if Treyarch actually succeeds. If they do the game will rule, sadly lack of info has me waiting. If I get it I'll msg ya my wii name. next time I get into the conduit I'll send my wii friend code ;)
Yeah, speed runs just shorten the game. And I gotta get 100% in Wario and then MP trilogy then mushroom men then dead rising then deadly creatures...gamefly 10 dollar sales are awesome ;)
My friend and I got 20th on a geometry wars multiplayer map on the online leaderboards too and we wanna get in top 10...then I gotta get my Cammy skills down on ps3...I have no time for all these games!
