Yes Crysis should be number 1. But halo lol. It looks good in that video but I think Bioshock and Uncharted are far better than Halo.

Edit: funny thing Bioshock and Uncharted vids are not even in HD.
Check out the HD vid for Bioshock and judge your self!

My list:

1. Crysis
2. Uncharted
3. Gears of war 2
4. Bioshock
5. Halo 3

How GTAIV even earned a spot on their list is beyond me, it has the ugliest water effects (except for the rain).

@Panda

Your comment is valid but then

Have you played UC1?

EDIT: I hit the article. Obviously written by a PC fanboy.

Crysis video 8 mins long, GTA4- PC mod (WTF?) 4 mins long. Console videos some few seconds. Come on. Why not to title the article: Look at Crysis and moded GTA4 water effecs?

Cryostasis also had some nice water and physics effects.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

But that's about the only good thing about the graphics in the game.

Yes, I have play Uncharted.

Graphics were fine, but not on Crysis' level.

What the hell difference does it make if the videos were longer? Lots of people make videos just to show off Crysis and custom Crysis maps running in high settings.

And all that GTA IV mod was a flooded city. It's the same water on the 360 and PS3.

@raztad

Why do you think it was written by a PC fanboy? Crysis deserved first place, and the writer doesn't have control of the length of the videos. And Uncharted doesn't come close to Crysis water (and yes, I used to have Uncharted). But imo GTA4 shouldn't have been there, I didn't like the water in it.

Hey no. I didnt mean Crysis dont deserve the top spot. What I said is clearly too much effort was put in showcasing (f*ng 8 min long video) Crysis, and almost not love for the others.

BTW, Uc1 did pretty well to be a first gen PS3 title. The water is plain beautiful, and the interaction with the main character was nicely done.

Crysis does not deserve #1 as they just place alpha textures on top of their ocean to "simulate" water interaction. Gears of War 2 should have been included as it has probably the best water ripples I've seen in a game so far. That said, Crysis still belongs in the top 5 due to how good the ocean looks when you aren't trying to interact with it.

1.17 - This Gen?
"This Gen" is short for "This generation of gaming consoles" so pc games and mods should not be included in this list.

I disagree, the topic needs re-titling. Top 5 water effects in gaming.

1.18 - My List
#1 & #2 : Drake's Fortune and Crysis
They have great water. Crysis' water looks better, But the way the water interacts in Uncharted is much better (e.g. the waves in the jet-ski levels and soaked clothes) So they tie for first

#3: Bioshock

#4: Resistance 2 (moves and looks real but has some jaggies and is always brown)

#5: MGS 4

I played Crysis and it is good but Uncharted is better. Water effects are more than just reflections and color tone. In Uncharted, when Drake gets wet he drips and his clothes actually dry out over time.

Besides, ignoring the water in Call of Juarez Bound in Blood is just wrong.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

@raztad, if you don't give Crysis the top 5 spots he is going to burn up another bubble expounding upon the shortcomings in your powers of observation. Never mind that you might have fallen asleep trying to get through Crysis ho hum generic paint by numbers predictable story.

1.21 - Worst water effects....
Infamous. It was sad that such an impressive game, would have such terrible water. When you hit a guy into the water, he dies on top as if it were the ground; No floating, just dead on top. Electricity effects KING!!!

But when I play GTA4 after playing Infamous, it hurts my eyes!

3) Halo 3 (Best water physics, objects and bodys floating down stream)
4) Bioshock
5) Gears of War 2

What's the matter? Your feelings hurt because I won't bow before your game?

Very few titles have mechanics that are so good you do not care about a story. Crysis isn't one of those. I guess I am one of those smart people that realize Crysis was nothing built a glorified tech demo built buy a group of people that do not know how to market a game engine.

Brain dead people might be able to stare at the "purty lights" and be amazed but I for one expect the story end of the production to hold up it's end of the table.

If thats the case tehn I guess Zelda belongs on the list too, because when link jumps in the water his clothes get soaked and they dry out over time...

Seriously the water in uncharted looks great, and I would have put it higher in the list (maybe second), but it dosnt look better than the water in crysis.

its very obvious that this article has no grounding in the technical side of real time fluid rendering...as both halo and bioshock, on a technical level, are not impressive at all...it still looks good, and does its part in both games...but neither game has real time reflections, and bioshock doesn't have 3d layer manipulation...halo does though, which is always impressive...

Uncharted by far has the most impressive water rendering of any console game...and Crysis overall still has the best overall I would say...but its debatable in way, as only uncharted takes the water effects onto characters...but both games have complete physics based layer manipulation...both have full real time reflections (even of NPCs and things that you can change...not just a static reflection)...both have the effects of bodies floating (halo 3 does that too)...

Killzone 2 was impressive in terms of the waves and a few layers of textures moving in the water (it wasn't just a solid color, there where several layers of 'current' or whatever you want to call it moving independently)...and it also had floating bodies and stuff...but it had zero layer manipulation...and GG commented on that before the game released, that they wished they had time to add that 'uncharted' like effect to the water...because there was actually a good amount of it in the game...

Gears 2 should have been on this over Bioshock...gears 2 finally had the layer manipulation and real time reflections added in its upgraded version of UE3...bioshock did not...but Epic barely used it in gears 2 anyway...as there was one boss fight that was water based, and just a handful of other spots in the game where water was present...

Resistance 2 had all the new effects put into water, but it was poorly done overall imo...the viscosity of fluids in that game were all wrong...it looked and moved like jello...

7.4 - Bubbles to Kleptic For a Great Reply
Other games have good looking water but not like Crysis and Uncharted and you stated why. They have something extra like how you can see the real reflections on the surface while at the same time seeing the bottom under with refractions happening and even the little light flickers of sun when it hits it right plus flow and response to player movement all in one. Halo, Bioshock, Gears 2, GTA IV, and others have nice water but not like that.

If we're just talking nice looking on the surface with reflections then I would throw Far Cry 2 in there as well. Overall I give the #1 award to Uncharted. Crysis make look better but I can't find a $300 computer to run Crysis so Uncharted gets it for making the most of what its got.

yeah there were several other 'best water effects' articles over the past few years...and Uncharted almost always won it...it is very impressive, and there is not one thing that any other game does over it tech wise...Crysis does the same things, but the differences between the two games are simply aesthetic...its just a matter of liking the greenish water in crysis, or the darker blue water of uncharted...the tech inside the rendering in both games are almost identical...and no other games yet stand toe to toe with either...

Uncharted 2 is supposed to take that tech and add it to snow...something MGS4 sort of did already (which by the way also has excellent water effects, the reflections where a bit wonky though)...

honestly this list is a bit failed. only Crysis and Uncharted are worthy of mention. Ok, granted water looks cool in all five videogames shown. but they don't react that much realistically. Except for Crysis. Wonder how Lair's water effect would have fared.

Halo's water?? Garbage??

Honestly the water was fantastic. I remember Frankie always talking about how amazing the water was... and it didnt disappoint. The stream on Valhalla was beautiful and watching the objects float downstream was an amazing spectacle to embrace.

The halo hatred is so ridiculous on this site.

Half Life 2's water was alright, but it didnt react to you standing in water current like Halo's.

I think Resistance 2 has severely underrated water effects. The game as a whole is nothing special graphically, but the first time I started playing around with the water in the beta, I was very impressed. It actually moves around when you interact with it, it doesn't just throw up some 2D splash frames.

As far as this list goes, it fails because Uncharted isn't 2nd, and BioShock isn't 3rd. Uncharted won an award for water effects if I remember correctly.
