A Conduit to better control - G&M examines The Conduit's controls

Globe and Mail's Chad Sapieha writes:

"...I couldn't shake the feeling that the reason all of these customization options existed in the first place is because the Wii's remote and nunchuk interface is less than ideal for this sort of game. Here is the evidence:

Normally, a significant leap forward in precision and control would necessitate more intelligent enemies, otherwise your ability to nimbly dance about the environment and target baddies with pinpoint accuracy would make a game too easy. But in The Conduit our enemies are noticeably denser than those in most other shooters. They prance about in the open, often fail to take opportune shots, have a tendency to simply charge the player, and seem to think they are well covered when in fact their heads--and, indeed, sometimes their entire bodies--are in plain sight.

And yet the game is still challenging.

That means players need their foes to be stupid to compensate for their inability--however well masked--to dexterously move about and quickly target enemies. If they were as intelligent as or had marksmenship equivalent to, say, Gears of War's Locust forces, we'd still be twisting our wrists to get into position as alien drones peppered us to death with explosive bugs..."

"Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the reason all of these customization options existed in the first place is because the Wii’s remote and nunchuk interface is less than ideal for this sort of game."

So the reason for all of the customization options for a PC shooter is what, then? That line of reasoning makes no sense. I don't see how having more control options is a bad thing.

And I don't have any clue how anyone would prefer dual analog over IR pointer controls. Diff'rent strokes, I guess. But I knew after playing Prime 3 that I would never go back to loving dual analog in a console shooter. I loved Bioshock, but I played it for the story and atmosphere, not the controls.

That is some lame reasoning skills. Ok did he play metroid and has he beat it you can set up the same control set up as that game and it was way harder.

I think what he is realizing is that he needs some practice because I quit half way in the game because I had 88 head shots in one level and I realized my skill level was beyond what the game was going to approach. So I log in online and realize people had way better set ups then me... then I tweaked my set up and now we get it on!

The author is really trying hard to find reasons not to like this game and it really shows. I'm not that much more impressed with the so call smart AI of the HD systems either. Try going online and saying the controls are not good and you will see what people can do with them already. Seriously the competition is very challenging and closing in on PC mouse like kills.

What is funny is gamers like this will not jump on the bus till the HD console do it and they have no choice yet the Wii guys will be pretty good at it by then.

I hadn't played much FPS lately, so I've been tuning up in the single player. Went online tonight and had my ass handed to me. It is TOUGH out there. I prefer a rectangular dead zone, but that really doesn't cut it online.
