10 mil copies of Wii Play sold in US

Nintendo will no doubt be happy with the results of videogame sales for February 2009 in the US. The NPD Group's data showed that the Wii was the best-selling console with 753 000 units sold while the ever-popular Wii Fit was the top game with 644 000 copies sold.

Since then the publisher has announced that the latest NPD data shows that Wii Play has now sold more than 10 million units in the United States since the game launched in February 2007. According to the press release, Wii Play is now the "top-selling software on all consoles and portable systems in the United States."

Wii Play sold 386 000 copies to secure fourth place in February. However, its inclusion with the NPD data continues to be controversial. Most people believe it should not be included because it comes bundled with a free Wii Remote.

It's really not hard to sell a Wii game when you get basically a free Wii-mote included in the box. And for the majority of Wii owners out there, Wii Play, Wii Sports and Wii Fit comprise 95 percent of their software library.

Not really "free" you actually pay 10 dollars/euro's more. Compared to the Wii-mote alone.

Also this is the freaking second article about it on N4G >_>.

@sidar

You can get WiiPlay for the price of a standalone Wiimote in the US. I bought three copies just for the controller. LOL. Beats buying just the controller itself. The mini game was pretty good though. The tank game got me hooked for hours.

In the UK the Wiimote costs £27.68 but with Wii Play it's £29.96

So I guess a mini game compilation that costs £2.28 selling 10m on Wii isn't that amazing.

Especially if it's free with the remote in the US.

I think RE4: Wii Edition sales are more impressive.
A third party game that is a port from last gen, that is adult themed, has a mature rating AND it isn't casual or a mini game compilation.
And it has done really well. I think the Wii should get a port of RE5.
