The Euthanasia of a Gaming Icon - Sonic Must Die

Has our beloved blue hedgehog "run his course"? When a game franchise has been milked to death, and your favorite characters reduced to laughing stocks, when is enough, enough? Is it time gamers told the developers "Please, let them die" when something has just gone on far too long?

Within this article, the author discusses what made Sonic great, and why it might be time for Sega to finally put him to rest.

I agree. They haven't made a good Sonic game since Adventure 1, and many fans would even dispute that. They really had 8-9 chances on this one.

I completely agree. Just kill the character.

I remember liking Sonic Adventure 1... but I also remember liking Sonic Adventure 2, and I played that recently, and... ugh.

Genesis games all the way.

They dont need to kill him, just make a game worth playing, he still has his own niche in gaming. Perhaps a gta type game and drop sonic in, they need to leave the run fast down this path approach and let you do what you want with him.

1.3 - i loved all the sonic games
this newer crowd of gamer dis the history that sonic has. they should do hd remakes of the old ones, then release newer versions of the games. that would be the begining of the sonic revival

What they NEED to do is instead of making fully 3D games, make remakes (and sequels) in Bionic Command: Rearmed style and release them only on PSN/XBLA/WiiWare. The concentrate on new IPs, and occasionally put Sonic in Mario games (or whatever else).

This is a prime example of a great game concept and franchise being beatin to death by people who overly think what a next gen game should be.People seem to forget alot of what we liked about old franchises were their gameplay.
Instead people are to focused on making cross genre games, online, mulitplayer, graph ics,and special achievements instead of first perfecting the gameplay.

Especially in an old franchise from the golden age of gaming Sega among others should know that gameplay was the number one selling factor fro games back then.Sonic unleashed almost had it untill they thought about Sonic going all Teenwolf on us because they thought the game needed more.
Overthinking often leads to bad ideas.

3 - Stop anime'izing him.
Things that ruined Sonic:

1. His 'cool' voice in the games.
2. His numberous typical random 'furry-like' characters that turn up in games like annoying flies.
3. Changing Dr. Robotnik's name officially to 'Eggman' creatively just because he looks like an egg.
4. Putting lyrics to what would sound like cool tunes if it wasn't for the singing.
5. Trying to find a balance between 2D and 3D gameplay.
6. Having no-coherant plotline throughout all the games.
7. Taking him away from Moebius and plonking him on Earth with humans.
8. Not going back to the Green Hill Zone and ignoring the simple chequered patterns that made Sonic games so memorable.
9. Making a rubbish sequel to the great Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast.
10. Giving him stupid abilities.

4 - What would happen if Sega brought back Alex Kidd and gave Sonic a break while they 'fix' him?
I wonder how that could work out in a modern day scenario...

This site is talking nonsense.

Sonic on Master System was released after the Mega Drive version and (at leas the first one) was decent enough.

Not to mention, Sonic 2 sucks (the level design is so bad) and the co-op is just broken to all hell.

What about Casino Zone? I thought that was great level design.

Yeah, Cajun, I was going to say. Casino Nights Zone is one of the greatest examples of level deign, ever. When I think of great 2D platformer level design, I immediately think of CNZ, and I'm no Sonic worshiper. I was always a Nintendo fanboy back in the 16-bit console wars.

Most of the levels in Sonic 2 were superbly well designed. Although the precision jumping in a few of the levels has left me with PTSD.

I'll probably get a ton of disagrees for this.

I really, really hate Casino Night Zone... I mean, REALLY hate it.

There's two zones I particuarly loath in the side scrollers and one is Casino Night Zone and one is Labyrinth Zone...
