Patent pops up, possibly shows Zelda will become more casual

A patent was discovered today that was apparently filed away with Shigeru Miyamoto as the inventor. There has been no confirmation that this patent is anything new, and if not, there's no clear indication about how it is. A few people have been doing a bit of investigating though. Interestingly, the details may be related to Zelda and might show that the series will take a more casual approach.

1.4 - It is being made for casuals, if this is true. See the below text taken from the patent document:
"[0158]As described above, in the present embodiment, when a player cannot find how to solve the “puzzle” which is set in the game, the player is allowed to view, in the scene, moving images for indicating how to solve the puzzle when the player desires to.

Therefore, a player that cannot find how to solve the “puzzle” may not become stuck with the game, and reduction, due to the puzzle being unsolved, in motivation for clearing the game may be prevented."

Translation: "If you get stuck on a puzzle, you can call upon a movie that will show you exactly how it is done."

It gets worse - or better, depending upon your viewpoint - the more of the patent document that you read.

Funny thing is that I got blasted the other day when I said that a casual Zelda was likely in the works.

From yesterday, I think:

Ain't life funny? :)

P.S. The phantom disagrees strike again! Terrifying disembodied specters bent on bearing their negative opinions on the living! Seriously though, this place is supposed to be a forum for discussion, if you disagree, say "why". It's called a conversation, you phantoms should try it sometime.

no way will there ever be this sort of "pic which level to start" Zelda game......maybe a unlockable after you finish the game but no way offered at the start.....that would defeat the purpose.

Start the flame and rumors.

Hints are nothing new. Most Zelda games had both visual hints and hints from navi/tatl/midna. I just hope that if "hints" are included in the next Zelda, they don't give away the answer.

No, just no Nintendo. There are enough casual games in the market, I haven't pick up the Wii because there are not enough hardcore games to justify the purchase, this is giving me fewer and fewer reason. I want a challenge not mindless swinging and button mashing.

Nintendo doesn't care about you or me or the hardcores

why should they, they've won this gen by casuals
so they have their new target audience now.

Nintendo has already accosted the Zelda series of a true "next-gen debut". Nintendo's audience is a lady that shoved credit cards in the Wii disc-slot. It's no surprise that the words "casual" and "Zelda" can exist in the same sentence at this point given Nintendo's Wii-track record.

This sounds so stupid. I sincerely hope that if Miyamato does continue to go through with this ridiculous-sounding plan, he actually makes it turn out good. I doubt it, though...

7 - if you actually read the story
its states that hints will be for those who require it. like an in built walk-through. some people will use it, some wont.

i wont.

and it doesn't state it is a zelda game. its just a patent for an idea.

Why do you assume that interface would be on the screen at all times?

The pictures are hard to interpret, since they're crude concept sketches, but I assumed that interface would only pop up when the player turned it on or selected it.

9 - Misleading Titles Strike Again
Wow, what is it lately with N4G and legitimately interesting news stories with titles that totally misrepresent their content and start needless flame wars?

If you read the title and the comments, you would think this article was about how the next Zelda would be a Young Link Goes to the Hyrule Carnival mini-games collection.

In fact, it is about a patent that may have nothing to do with Zelda or "casual gaming" (whatever that means now). (Although the pictures are clearly using the Zelda series for their example.)

My best interpretation of my crude skimming of the patent is that it is for a picture-in-picture video walkthrough function for games that would allow players to view movies instead of verbal hints. There may be the capacity for users to create their own custom video walkthroughs and share them. There may also be the capacity for players to use these movies to skip forward in the game, avoiding undesirable sections.

Honestly, the most "casual" sections of this patent have long existed in the form of cheat codes and walkthroughs. What is really interesting, to me anyway, is the potential for custom content. Being able to record and share portions of your gameplay, presumably through an online network, so that others can use them as a walkthrough, admire your record time, or even resume the game from where you left often, is a lot more interesting to me than unsubstantiated speculation about whether or not the next Zelda will be "casual" (once again, whatever that means).

We'll see. One thing about N4g is a lot of the stuff reported here or "rumors" and up not being true. This is just flame bait for people who want to bash on wii. The next Zelda game is going to be awesome. Wii Motion Plus + Zelda= BadA$$

12 - exactly
its just a patent for a gameplay mechanic. a visual aid or hinting system that could be incorporated into ANY game.

if you get stuck you could select the visual aid and a box appears on the screen literally showing you what to do. obviously for beginner gamers.

thats how i understood it anyway.

NOTE: ITS NOT ABOUT ZELDA, THATS JUST A CHEAP AND SHAMELESS PLOY TO GET HITS.

OK I guess I'm boxing this console and keep it as a collectable item for storage. So instead of wantng to promote your fanbase you're basically spitting on our faces.

I'm going to go hug my PS3 and Xbox 360 and have them keep me warm through the winter. :(

this is just how people create games. all zelda beta are like this so the programing can be done. have you ever seen beta from ocarina of time it is very simaler to this. there are different scenes you can choose from ex scene 78 could be fight ganon where seen 12 could be the temple of time. trust me this has nothing to do with zelda turning casual

You guys are all idiots, did you even read the patent?

It's the normal Zelda game with the ability to make it easier if you want, but you don't have to choose to.

also the idea is innovative, learn2readstorybeforecommentsc rubs

If ever, my money would've been on Nintendo making the next Zelda the most hardcore 3D Zelda game ever. With all the backlash from longtime fans and the tons of money they are already making on endless casual games on both Wii and DS I would've guessed Nintendo bringing one of their most hardcore franchises to the real hardcore level.
If this is true then my 23 year old relationship with Nintendo (which has already been wounded since after the release of SSBB in March 08 due to a lack of games!) will be officially over.

Wii has enough casual games. at least they should leave something to the hardcore so they can win both sides. If nintendo make a casual Zelda then I wont support them anymore.

you guys really read the article? it's a OPTIONAL thing, the hint system will only be avaliable if you turn it on, you don't need to use the hint system os the scene selector...

and if i assume you guys really read the article... so you guys don't want a option that makes the game more acessible? think about how many ppl got out of zelda because that thought it was hard... with a hint system, kids and older ppl will be able to enjoy zelda too, and for the hardcores, you just turn it off and nejoy your experience...

you guys seems to lack gray matter sometimes...
y'know, this is not like wiimusic...

It's not making sense, they want to do better than OOT( although i think WW is bette)...so how doe this make any sense?

It will be a fine Zelda game, i'm not worried.
You guys are stretching stuff.

Basically according to the thing, this will be a much harder zelda game with an option to ease it out IF you want to. At least that's what i'm thinking, i mean if there is an option to make things easier than the base level of the game must be much more difficult from TP.

i mean starting with Ocarina there has been a "hint" system per se. first there was navi then tatl then in windwaker the boat and so forth and so on. I doubt it means anything more or less.
