Final issue of EGM to be viewable online

Following the massive layoffs at 1UP.com, former Editor-in-chief of EGM magazine, James "Milkman" Mielke, details in a recent blog post:

"This is actually not "that" blog, either, but I wanted to give you guys a peek at the final day of EGM's proactive existence. I know it will live on in everyone's memories as the best gaming magazine of the last twenty years, nearly as old as this favorite hobby of ours, but as of now it is no longer in publication or circulation. That said --and to clarify on what I stated in my previous blog-- the final, secret, unpublished issue of EGM will show up here on 1UP shortly in the near future. You will be able to read every hi-res page, ads and all (last time I checked at least) on 1UP, to see the beautiful job that crew did, even with the guillotine hanging over our heads every minute of the day. I'm only posting the cover to it for now, but as you can tell, it's quite an eye-catching, dynamic cover. I hope you enjoy the full, final issue."

The rest of the blog post details the last day of the 30+ journalists who were laid off following 1UP acquisition to UGO.

I stopped subscribing to EGM a LONG time ago. That magazine started getting worse and worse and then went downhill FAST!

well, it's not like your opinion means anything. You're just another anonymous ******.

/on topic

I've had a spot in my heart for EGM since I was a kid, it deserves some respect, even though it had it's good times, and it's bad times. I'll be buying the last issue for good old times.

2 - You guys know what would be ironic?
If the final issue of EGM had the Killzone 2 review and it scored perfect scores.. I say ironic because anyone remember that issue EGM did a couple years ago with the cover showing a picture of the PS3 with a tomato being thrown at it and the title was "battle station" and it had a tomato splattered all over the PS3? what irony that would be if the final EGM issue had a perfect killzone 2 review

BTW my heart goes out to those laid off, i was laid off a couple months ago.. so yea

7 - I remember when I was growing up
EGM was really the de-facto publication that I would look to when researching games. I didn't have the internet when I was younger, so I had to rely on magazine reviews and game rentals. This was back in the days when the SNES and Genesis were in full swing, and you could rent the respective games from Blockbuster Video.

Sad to see them fall like this, though to be perfectly honest, the magazine hasn't really been the same for a while. I currently read Game Informer, as I can get my multiplatform fix without much bias being injected into articles and reviews.

egm was the first gaming magazine i ever bought, i was about 9 years old or so and saw it on a rack in a used game store when i was spending birthday money on some genesis games

I ended up being a subscriber until i started college and was moving around a lot, i canceled all of my mag subscriptions to cut down on the hassle of mail forwards but still picked up the odd issue from news stands

its very odd to vividly remember things like that but looking back on it i'll go as far as to say that buying that magazine set me on a path to put me where i am

love for the games industry and love for the hobby that ultimately lined up my career path in several ways

while i'm not at a development studio yet, just working inside the circle of very passionate people that are in the games industry is amazing

gaming is what other industries strive to be, filled with people who love to be there and genuinely love their work

while my interaction with egm and their staff has been minimal i have had the opportunity to talk to a few of their writers over the years and they always seem to be great people

i'm genuinely sad to see the magazine go and even more to see these people out of work

now approaching my 24th birthday a full 15 years has passed since i picked up that issue, and here i am an artist on the fringe of the industry trying to push my way in deeper

to paraphrase a quote from stranger than fiction:

"life is filled with moments both significant and mundane, but those moments remain entirely indistinguishable"

i wish all of the egm crew much luck and perhaps i'll have the pleasure of crossing some of their paths again one day

With by the hour updates on gaming sites. Gaming magazines may soon become extinct.

That's sad. They should have let them go balls-to-the-wall for their 20th anniversary/final issue. Release it like one of their old super thick mags.

11 - Remember the Monthly Envelope Artwork?
hahah yeah, I use to submit my envelope artwork in every month, but it never got posted. The winner would win a joystick.

Somewhere towards the end of the magazine, there would be a sweepstake to fillout and submit $5 for a chance to win a huge tv, stereo system and almost every console available at that time.

Going futher back during the earlier years, there were a couple of pages dedicated the Die Hard Games ads. You would see screen shots of what looked like some really cool import games from Japan for different game systems. Several yrs later, Die Hard would release their own gaming magazine which eventually died out, but that's a different story.

Oh the memories...

Yeah, I want to know this, too, since my subscription still had quite a few months left. They're going to piss a lot of people off if they don't offer refund options.

I have so many fond memories of bringing an egm to school during the snes genesis wars. We'd always gloat about what was coming for our systems. Then i'd drool over pictures of games i'd never own. Shame it fell so hard. It's funny the last issue will be online. seemingly assuring the company that bought it out wont make a cent off distribution.
