Wii Developer: Hardcore Games Need to Sell or 'It's Back to Mini-Games'

Shacknews: "Those lamenting the lack of hardcore-focused Wii games need to "vote with their dollars" when Deadly Creatures is released in February, otherwise, Rainbow Studios designer Jordan Itkowitz says that "it's back to mini-games" for the developer."

1 - Don't get your hopes up. Poor fellah.
And please don't cite Supermario anything or Animal Crossing as "hardcore". A game doesn't need blood and bewbs and swear-words to be "hardcore" or "mature". It does however, have to cater to mature sensibilities, have interesting thematic elements, humor or questions. Some of the Pixar films are representative of this; made for kids, but still enjoyed by adult tastes. A plumber saving a princess for what, the 10th time now, isn't inventive or hardcore, just derivative.

Fragile looked interesting, till I saw the combat engine, basically you and a flashlight; inventive or utterly lame - you decide.

If you hardcore gamers don't think that Ninty doesn't give a crap about you by now, go play some more Animal Crossing Wii; you're a lost cause anyhow. Take a look at where the focus for the Wii is (casual), and where it's going (even more casual/ lifestyle: ala Wii Fit) and just enjoy it or move to another system. Sure there will always be those gems, Okami and Fire-Emblem and such, but they are the EXCEPTION, not the RULE.

On a sidenote, I'm seriously interested in seeing the next Zelda, though I have a sinking feeling it will be casual focused. Again, that's not a bad thing, just not my particular taste.

Cheers
-C

Brawl is a pretty hardcore game, and it smashed sales records.

I only buy games that are good. I'll see how reviews of Deadly Creatures turn out, what people think of it, and if gets mediocre fanfare, I may rent it to see whether or not it's worth it.

If people want good games to continue being made, then they should buy games like de Blob.

1.2 - Brawl is also First Party...
Another issue that keeps rearing it's head on Nintendo's systems. But yeah, Brawl is a fun game that can be enjoyed across the generations. The story aspect is lacking at best though, it's the game-play that is it's saving grace.

I'd like another Z&W too, but I'm not holding my breath.

@ 1.2: I agree on the Nintendo first party comment. If it's made by Nintendo, it will sell.

The problem Nintendo has is their new audience. I work Target - electronics and parents will from my experience 90% of the time rather buy 4 $10 games than 1 $40 or 1 $50 game. So they'd rather buy 4 shovelware pieces of garbage than buy Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Galaxy etc.

Again this is from my personal experience and I'm not saying it's every Wii game buyer out there but I think this is a significant portion. "Hardcore" games will keep getting price @ $40/$50 @ launch thus snubbed by a large portion of Wii game buyers.

History has shown that the so-called "Hardcore Nintendo fanbase" on the Wii would rather complain and complain about a lack of hardcore games all while ignoring several games staring them in the face.

They complain about a lack of FPS games yet they ignore Metroid Prime 3. Heck, they complain about a lack of online FPS games yet they ignore the 32-player Medal of Honor: Heroes 2.

They complain about "mature" games with blood and gore yet they ignore Manhunt 2 and No More Heroes.

They'll even complain about their own core franchises such as Twilight Princess, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Mario Galaxy.

In other words, the "Hardcore Nintendo fanbase" is full of hypocritical crybabies.

You should finish your post with......

that own other systems.
"In other words, the "Hardcore Nintendo fanbase" is full of hypocritical crybabies + that own other systems. These are same same 20 million that fail to buy the must have HD hardcore games, so only 1-2 million of these gamers agree on what is good.

Hardcore gamers are mostly talk right now... or better yet gossiping about games rather playing them or tell people about cool stuff that happened in a game.

5 - It's Going to be Tough for Hardcore Games to Sell
A lot of the hardcore players have moved on. I had a Wii almost a year before PS3 or 360. The lack of good, hardcore games is what led me to PS3 and 360.

I now haven't bought a Wii game since Super Paper Mario. I buy a WiiWare title every now and then, but that's it.

I've had my 360 for just over a year and have over 20 games for it.

6 - I already voted with my dollars, i got a 360 this generation for the hardcore games, if that "developer" thinks i would ever buy such a horrible looking game to support "hardcore" games on Wii, is at least dillusional
And boring at the same time

He better develop a 360 game that looks stunning and plays great if he wants me to buy his game

7.1 - Hahahahaaha, that was good
Exactly how i see it also, if they want to get the hardcore, juat make a Zeldas every damn year, no gamer will say no to that

Juts move work force from the 100 mario and 200 casual party games to a zelda game for christ, that will be really fresh, unlike the dissapointing Zelda TP

What are the most selling games on Wii? Wii-fit, Wii-play, Wii-sport, etc. That means people don't want core games. If people don't care then what's the problem? Don't make them and keep making mini-games collections.

There are 2 more game consoles on the market that are almost hardcore completely. Want core games then don't buy a Wii. As simple as that. There's going to always be a core game here and there for the Wii but don't expect to rival the competitors on that aspect because even Nintendo himself have said that they want to keep expanding their market and we all know what that means... =0

Meh, doesn't matter to me anymore. Gaming used to take too much of my time. I'm free from my shackles, even if I play a hardcore game once every month or so. I get a feeling of emptiness whenever I finish a game, because it's time that is lost. If you are hardcore maybe you're looking at the wrong system. It has potential to make amazing hardcore games, but the market is not there.

yes because playing with spiders and snakes is so freaking hardcore..

get a life, notice they said "otherwise its back to mini-games"? thats because they wont move from the wii because they dont have talent. if they had talent, they would be making games for other systems and dont anyone dare say DS. Ds caters to both crowds, I love my ds.

But notice since the huge success of the wii, there have been 0, COUNT THEM 0!!!! truly great nintendo titles for the ds? sorry i got sidetracked.

12 - It's Time For A Reality Check For This Developer
Is that some sort of threat?
How about "make a game people want to play or its bankruptcy"

Excellent post my friend, bubbles for you.

Do you want to know why the Wii's first party games sell the best? Because they are always the best made and the the most highly promoted. Deadly Creatures looks like an interesting enough game, but your right it probably won't sell that well. Why? A.-It's been getting delayed repeatedly, which indicates there is some development problems. B.-It's an unfamiliar and slightly strange concept for a game. (not saying this SHOULD be a factor that will hold the sales back, but will.) And C.- Most importantly, it will be competing with many high profile games, all of which will be third party.

So, while this guy is getting his butt kicked in sales by other third party developers such as High Voltage Software, Platinum Studios, Head Strong Studios, Capcom etc. He needs to ask himself why his games aren't good enough and then put the blame on himself rather than making threats at us, the people who give him a job so that he can pay his bills.

13 - okay kids
guns+boobs+cursing+blood dose not equal hardcore at all.
thats a fad game.

Im a proud Wii owner. SO,
SSBB
SMG
LoZ:Tp
TvC
Tales 2
MoH2:Heroes
Madworld
Manhunt2
Conduit
Resident Evil
NoMoreHeroes 1+2
CoD
MH3
DQX
Tales of Ten
etc. etc.

The Wii has hardcore gams. They may not have the same *insert cover system, pop out and shoot* game that 360 has but that dosent make them less of a console. Personally, if a console dosent have the proper genres (fighter,RPGs,Platformers,Spor ts and Shooters) thn it isnt a hardcore console. Period and all of the new consoles have those genres. *back to TvC!! a real gamers game!!*

14 - I blame hardcore gamers for the lack of hardcore games on nintenod systems?
The N64 had lots of hardcore titles and even then it didnt sell well. So why do gamers say that Nintendo abanded them, hardcore gamers were the once who never supported Nintendo during the N64 generation. When Nintendo came out with great games it sold poorly and know that its selling great you guys say that they abanded you.

WHy would anyone suffer's nintendo idiocy when it came to the nintendo 64 ? It had but a few worthile games plagued by a console that lost by default in power and practical use . Nintendo gimped developpers with their horrendous and space limited cartridges and was strangling their developpement . Hence no final fantasy , and many other games and franchises that made the playstation a success with 10X more hardcore games available .

Let's not forget the horrible colors and the awful blur due to the lack of proper cache and memory . Nor the devs that sticked with it being force into relying unto constant tricks to do decent or sometimes awesome games .

Nintendo backed itself voluntarily into a corner , and its their fault back then .

So Rainbow honestly thinks that if a niche obscure risky "hardcore" title that is Deadly Creatures doesnt sell they are going back to minigames?
Sorry but having only one game judge whether or not to continue with hardcore titles especially it being a title such as this is setting themselves up for failure in the market.imo.

What is it some kind of black mail ? if i dont buy your possibly crappy spider game it's back to mini games ?
I know it's said in a more general sense , but still ...
I just can't agree with the "we did it but it didnt work , so we give up" attitude .
Especially when most of the wii's "hardcore games" arent really good to begin with (when already you find them wich is another debate) .

Some will most likely complete my probably short list , but outside of a few first party titles , we got the usual anime game garbage or average stuff , a tales of , fire emblem , no more heroes , a far too big amount of remakes such as resident evil 4 , and a bunch of yet to be released titles ...

It's funny I've looked at almost all the videos for this game and some are fine but it reminds me of a HD developer. We get talks about how cool it is and some footage.

So far this game is not marketed to gamers it is marketed to hype feed sheep the Wii players are not those people. They may buy different types of games but you don't see any of them buying xbox 360s or PS3 because they feel those games are not fun.

What is the first thing a person asks when you tell them about a real game or a sport.... how do you play it and what you can do..... The hardcore want controller layouts game play videos showing how different attacks can be used and why this game is different.

I will give this game a try as a rental but not too much about it is fighting very hard for my money when I'm waiting on my copy of TVSCapcom or conduit or T4, etc, etc...

Now if this is a true hardcore game it will have deep game play and lots of replay.
