Top 5 Mishandled Game Franchises

It was pretty amusing hearing die-hard Fallout fans whine that Fallout 3 was too much like another award-winning RPG. You don't know how good you've got it, guys. There's been a lot of other well-regarded game franchises that have become been completely derailed by publishers/developers through neglect, incompetence, greed, or some combination of the three. As a result of these mistakes, a hit game never becomes a hit series and a hit series becomes a shadow of its former self. Here are five of the worst examples

Although I would say that not releasing a game putting you on the list a la Duke Nukem means that you would be able to put Monkey Island on there.

It's sort of covered under the Star Wars entry but yeah. I'm not sure LucasArts has even expressed the slightest bit of interest in making another one.

ahhhh x-com, the old days of golden gaming are really gone...

i miss the good days... hope the next one delivers the same imersion as the old game did...

I was always curious about where people put their first base. I suspect most, like me, just placed it as close to their hometown as possible. Gotta protect my favorite bar from the alien invasion.

I loved that game. Simply fantastic and it's a shame computer games have gone to the wayside considering what they used to be.

Yeah, Tomb Raider is a viable candidate for the list. It started out as a repetitive, frustrating platformer with a bad camera that skated by on its main character's sex appeal and that hasn't changed in a decade.

MDK

I'd love the third game to actually be a reboot of the franchise and remake of the original with duck and cover mechanics and slight stealth sections with an excellent multiplayer, Tommy Tallarico making the epic music again and NO stupid bloody Doctor Hawkin puzzles, just balls to the wall actio and destroy minecrawlers by manually crashing them off cliffs into oceans and a real death count acting as a timer.

Yes, I ask a lot for a new MDK, make it happen Interplay, Planet Moon, NOW.

Personally I would accept the original on a new machine. It was so much fun and then my computer wouldn't run the sequel. Pesky onward marching technology.

Too true! But Sonic should be higher up on the list. Remember how that blue hedgehog melted our hearts in the early 90's? these days, every single Sonic game is a crapfest of epic proportions....

The Star Wars franchise, although admittedly generally weak, still got some good games. Sonic may be a sad story of misshandling a license but you can only do so much with the concept of a 2d scrolling game. I'm not even going into the rampage series. I can understand x-com series (even though it got some decent interpretations) and the coma struck duke nukem but...

I've waited for the third installment of Fallout since the second came. I've read the design documents of the original sequel. When the third one finally came I got an Oblivion repackaged. And I've seen a great deal of good game series going down the drain but when I saw what they did to my Fallout it really hurt (yes hurt). Fallout is dead and Bethesda, a company I actually thought could handle the name, killed it.

Let me just say this. If you don't see what's failing with Fallout 3 then you don't know how good you've got it.

Fallout 3 might not be exactly what every fan of the original wanted but it was still regarded by many as a good or great game. Some differences are inevitable when a license changes hands and there's ten years worth of new technology but a lot of people - including people who played and replayed the first two ad nauseum like myself - still think Fallout 3 was a faithful sequel and overall solid role-playing game.

Basically, the point is this: until Bethesda releases a Wii game called "Fallout Racerz: Wasteland Adventures!" with anthromorphic Brahmin driving go-karts around desert courses and tossing beach balls at each toher, Fallout is far from being the most mismanaged franchise around.

in regards to your opinion on fallout 3.

In this day and age there have been incredible advancements in the video game industry. if fallout 3 came out and was another isometric rpg, then only the original fans wouldve played it.

You wanna talk about mishandled franchises, look at Silent Hill, namely origins and homecoming.

989 Studio's "treatment" of the Twisted Metal series definitely garners a position for runner-up...

Personally, I say the Army Men series has been extremely mishandled.

By which I mean that the people who're planning on making another one have not been thrown off a cliff yet.

I'm not denying Fallout 3 as a capable game. I've played both morrowind and oblivion and regard them as good games. However, and I'm not talking isometric views or the ten year leap in technology.

What made the Fallout series was the atmosphere, and more important, the way it was portrayed. This does not exist on the third installment. In fact I'm afraid of travel to populated places in the game just for the fear that some of those lifeless drones will come up to me and say they say a mudcrab today. The dialouge, character portration and atmosphere is none existent in Oblivions take on Fallout.

Still it's a capable game but they didn't need to soil the good name of fallout for this one. Why I call it misshandled is because for all this time of hoping and waiting for someone to take on the challenge of taking the Fallout name out of the shadows, I realised when the game came that it's probably even less of a chance now that I will ever get a decent sequel. Now the name is owned by Bethesda and they didn't have the respect for the previous games I thought they had.
