IGN: Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of New World Review

The real-time battle system is fun, but slogging through hours and hours of awkward dialogue in an on-rails undertaking isn't. Dawn's visuals are sufficient, but don't look like anything that couldn't have been done on the GameCube. Being the only RPG on the Wii's horizon, this doesn't feel like a relief -- it feels rather depressing.

Man I really enjoyed the first one on the cube... its a shame this one just looks like a quick cash in on a great RPG series...

It looks better than the first one. What you have to look at is that not only did this guy not play the first one, he does not like Jrpg's in general.

This game was made for those who played the original, and those who read the story after the fact. Since the reviewer never played the original, it says alot about how the game fits in quality-wise in the grand scheme of things, but on the flip side of the coin, he could never understand much of the allusion to the original that plays such a huge role. If you loved the first one, you'll like this one. Though everyone will have their individual issues regarding little things here and there that have been changed. It's no original ToS, but it's what you've been waiting for in most of the ways that matter. That's my opinion anyway.

"The long-running "Tales" series of Japanese role-playing games (JRPG) has a rabid fanbase – but for newcomers to the series, it's hard to see why. Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World is a run of the mill, standard JRPG without a single original idea in its head. Sullen country boy with a bad haircut destined to save the world? Check. An awkwardly translated, incomprehensible story? Check. Monster hunting? Check. This entire package -- from the story to the gameplay to the visuals -- feels like a relic we should have grown out of by now."

The reviewer and I must be of different tastes, because that's pretty much exactly how I like my RPGs.

Thats nice that you guys are going to play it, still doesn't change the fact that it's not a high quality game. I haven't played it but I' thinking this game probably got the score it deserved since we've seen a million other rpgs with the same problems.

Like I said, what you call problems, I call a good time. Cheesy music? No random encounters? Requisite of having played other games in the series? All of those are pluses in my eyes. Convoluted, nearly incomprehensible story? Excellent. The way I see it, the more convoluted a story is, the better.

"An awkwardly translated, incomprehensible story?"

Actually GT thinks its a well written story...

@nowayguy
"still doesn't change the fact that it's not a high quality game"

You are so full of it.
Would your mindset towards this be any different if this wasn't the IGN but the GT review? since they gave it a 7.8?

GT already said that the story is actually written very well.
And by the looks of it it has better animations and a cleaner look to it.

While is still uses the base elements of the first series, i really don't see how this is not "quality".
Why don't you go play the series first?

And thats fine.

You can like it but you've still got to look at it from a proper perspective and realize that just because you like it that doesn't make it a high quality game. Thats being ignorant not to acknowledge it's faults.

I had a blast playing Bad boys on the Gamecube and that game is pure garbage. While TOS2 obviously isn't as bad as that I know it probably won't be a great game either. As long as you realize that, more power to you.

Sounds like you're the one with the issue. One bad review does not mean a game lacks quality.

Well, whether or not it's a great game isn't really that much of a concern to me, since greatness only means that other people recognize it as such. I don't really have the time or the money to spend on great games so much as I do for games which appeal to my tastes.

Famitsu also gave Lair and Haze great scores, so I wouldn't put them over IGN, but that's just me.

8 - This Score...
Sucks, this review method fvc|<ing sucks seriously, wtf? blaming the game for being RPG and for having a complex history? This are the same bastards that 8.0 something Eternal Sonata (wich can be blamed of each of these claims, even graphics).

Did he expect the story to be simple? did he expect this game to feature some Strong Bald and Kick-ass-and-chew-gum with big guns saving america hero? a unique and amazing not ever done before cover system? and 5 hours of lenght? and HD this-gen graphics?

"10 years ago this would have been a great game but now we have grown up" wtf? I mean WTF? Jesus Christ.....

Do not listen to this lame a$$ review, go buy the game, I assure you this is an AMAZING game, support JRPGs on wii, or any console.
