Miyamoto responds to harsh criticism of Wii Music

They do some things in between, read this quote from Miyamoto: "Number one is that we continue to work on the same types of games that we have made for many, many years. Beyond that, we have branched out and we are creating additional products aside from those that, like “Wii Music” and like “Wii Fit” are very different in tyle and have a very broad appeal. The way that our teams work, as I mentioned earlier, is that a lot of the team members, let’s say for example from a “Mario” or a “Zelda” team, will swap in and out among different teams. And so I think internally for us, the ability to have people who have been working on the same game for many, many years and to be able to take a break from it and work on a product like “Wii Music,” where they’re able to look at design from a different perspective and broaden their own perspective in terms of the types of things that you can do in interactive entertainment [is good.]."

Doing something unusual can bring up good results, look at wii sales...they did something different. All their hardcore games they brought out in 2 years, what do you honestly want? Remember that Nintendo is only a video game company, while the other ones sell TVs to Software, and even make movies.

Ape, those games are epic, but they're the same games we've been playing with the same controllers for 10 years.

Overall, I'd have to say that I agree with you. I like Nintendo's stuff from say, 10 years ago, but little they've done lately really interests me. And you're right, we (gamers in general) have been playing these same games for years. Nothing's really 'new' about them except the Wiimote motion controls. No doubt that Wii Music is a new entry, but it targets mainly casuals and won't appeal to the mainstream gamer. Just my two cents, but as a mainstream gamer I can safely say that this season I'll be playing Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet, not Wii Music.

I've read the article as people have suggested and what I can say is...OMG!! the next mario and zelda games will need you to do balancing acts on Wii Fit board and you'll need to conduct an ochestra to defeat bowser or whoever the the bad guy in zelda like playing an RTS!!

ok...in a serious note, Miyamoto is feeling bitter towards the critism of Wii Music but what actually did he expect from "GAME" reviewers? they review "GAME"s and Wii Music is not really a "GAME"! he's like saying the reviewer didn't like Wii Music because he's a 'core' gamer but the casuals will totally love it! now he's started to feel like everything he touched should turns out a gold! get over it Miyamoto and all of you who praise this guy like god! Well nothings really new bout Grand Theft either, run around jump in a car, do a mission. The only thing that has changed in ten years is that it went from looking down in 2d to free roaming 3d. But hey even zelda did that.

Mainstream to me are people that bought the ps2 for hanaha montanah and bratz, singstar and buzz etc. (i think u got it mixed up with what u call "casual"). They buy the systems. Dont believe me>? With every top ten bought list i have read (from at least psONE), has all these crap games that i wouldnt touch with a ten foot pole trouncing the charts.

They range from ninja turtles, to singstar to horsez and petz...all sorts of crap. Sure somewhere in there is a actual good game. But mainly those games are popular with kids and familys. Thats why the wii sells. Thats why the ps2 sold. PsONE, same deal.

If u think im crazy thats cool, i dont blame u really. But plz if u really wana argue my point...at least look back thru top ten games list (once with the most sales) of the last say 6 years (if u can find em). Look at ps2 lists, see what games sold the most.

Coz from what i rememeber, those singstar games and buzz games sold thru the roof.

I think it's common knowledge that people learn stuff when they get out of their comfort zone. I bet Nintendo employees were like WTF when they get told to do this. Also if this fails which it looks like it won't (I'm guessing it's short of what they expected though) they can look on it and know it didn't work. Notice how he replied when they were talking about a headset to wear when playing games, I don't have it on hand but he said they weren't planning anything like that.

People wish Wii-music not to sell, but no one is benefitting from it!
They wish it in hope they will make ZELDA/MARIO etc etc games...but if Wii-music fails he will just try something else.

The way to become wise is to realize that people aren't stupid, at most they are uninformed. Therefore you inform them. That and it's more likely they want other people to agree with their opinion, so they go to these sites where there is a concentration of like-minded people. Like-minded groups never get as much done though, because they never look at arguments from other perspectives. I just think they don't know what they're talking about fully, and just hop along a bandwagon so they don't have to question anymore.

Yes but they are earned their reknown, in actual realistic sciences/arts.

Miyamoto made a couple of successful franchises the nes and snes game were good and fun, but it doesn't earn him genius or god status to me unlike alot of people here.

Comparing a game maker to some of the great scienetific and artistic minds is streching it to put it mildly.

He has not disgraced gaming, although him understanding not every gamer out there thinks everything he makes is solid gold, to everyone might be a step in the right direction.

I wouldn't say he's disgraced gaming. Lord knows he one of the fathers of gaming as it is today. But I will say that he really should work on something outside of the Mario/Zelda/Nintendo mold that would attract core gamers to the Wii. Wii Music? Doesn't cut it in the long run with core gamers. Not core Nintendo gamers, I mean core gamers outside the Nintendo mold that don't eat up every new iteration in Nintendo's established franchises.

Midi got nothing to do with the actuall wave(sound) data.
Midi is just a tool to send and recieve data that is made for music.
The software than uses this data to manipulate the instruments in the soundbanks.

Wii-music just uses a really cheap SoundBank.
if you can download ModTracker and load the gm.dls in your system32\drivers folder you can see how it works in a way.
in Modtracker( or any other software that is able to import DLS files) you can see the actuall sound samples. the GM file is only 3mb and thats why it sounds cheap.
Professional soundbanks( they can come in any format) can take up to 40GB.

World of Warcraft music is also made with MIDI.

Also glad they used Midi in zelda, because it made the overwold theme to change. A nice detail.

Wii Music certainly isnt his highest glory (far from it really), but does that no mean everything else he is done is 20 year old crap. Coz mario 64 really wasnt that long ago....and what about wind waker, galaxy, twilight princess, phantom hour glass, mario 3, pikimin, orcana of time.....there all crap now are they.
