Iwata Explains Wii Storage Solution

A quote from Satoru Iwata, from N-Europe.com:

"We will make it so that, when there is not enough room on the Wii's internal memory, you will be able to purchase and download Virtual Console and WiiWare software directly from the Shopping Channel to an SD memory card. We will also make it so that you will need to go through just one process in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it. We would like to deal with this issue utilizing two methods. Since the updates to realize these new structures will require significant revisions to the Wii system, and these changes need to be made by taking care of a variety of different angles, this method will become effective beginning next spring. For some of you, this may be considered late. But please know that we really appreciate your cooperation and understanding. We are working hard so we can begin the service as soon as possible."

One process?
i better be able to click one button and the game starts playing without load times from an sd card.

you won't and thats why i dont think this is a solution.
You still need to swap channels in order to play them.

" in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it"

Meaning that you need to transfer back and forte the channels(games) before you can play them.

You must almost think that this isn't the ultimate solution but it seems that this is it. (for Nintendo that is)

Why did anyone disagree?

If you think you can directly play games from your SD card you can't read obviously.

If this allowed users to play Virtual Console and Wii Ware games right off of the SD card (and the Wii supported SDHC 16GB), then I could consider it a solution.

Maybe Nintendo could add additional pages for channels when a properly formatted SD card is inserted. This way they could use a secure encrypted filesystem, and lock the content on the card to the console it was purchased on.

That would provide for the optimal solution with the existing hardware. SD cards are pretty cheap, and this would allow Wii owners to have massive VC and WW game collections right at their fingertips.

understanding? WTF?
It takes you guys @ nintendo at least 6 months to write a piece of code to access the sd-slot; or to find a way to charge customers for this? which of the two is it?
they're gonna have to re-write the whole system for this, ridiculous.

If you can't figure it out... just ask the homebrew community....LOL
they've been doing for it free also.

it got nothing to do with that, they are just scared of more piracy.
You just don't do stuff in a finger snap.

But how worse can it get?...i guess it can't

Guys, you need to read this very carefully and take it literally.

"We will make it so that, when there is not enough room on the Wii's internal memory, you will be able to purchase and download Virtual Console and WiiWare software directly from the Shopping Channel to an SD memory card."

In other words when you go to download some software, it will give you the option to save to SD card or save to internal memory. It doesn't necessarily mean that you can play it directly from the SD card...

"We will also make it so that you will need to go through just one process in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it."

This implies that you still have to transfer it to the console to play it. All he means here is that they made the process a little less clunky. Instead of having to move an old game from the system to SD to free up space for the download, you can download direct to SD and when you want to play it you have to transfer it on to the system. I imagine rather than deleting/copying and such, they will have an exchange feature that will do all the manual work for you and will simply swap the locations of two games. Eg if you have an N64 game on system memory and a Wiiware game on SD, you could choose the exchange feature and it would automatically copy the N64 to SD, copy the Wiiware to console and delete the Wiiware originally on the SD.

This isn't a solution, it's an insult.

Exactly, this is not a solution.
This is the exact same problem only on this time the games are saved in a different place.

@jorgeanaya
No not HDD, just the SD card would have been enough.
Its not a media hub anyway.
But they are just scared of piracy.

Hmmm I guess we will have to wait for the full product to get happy or not. Sounds like The SD card is going to be a library and you just trade the games back a forth to the Wii or maybe it's some type of initialization of the rom in order to play it from the SD card.

This is also a translation. It seems the interface will be changing also because if I have a 2 gig card there is no way in hell all those games will show up as channels.

If it's faster than what we have to do now then cool. I think it's a good idea to stream the games though.

Curious to see how all this works out though.

Oh yeah here is a freebie from a strange place!

Didn't Nintendo say that they would increase the number of available channels too?

If that is the case then it wouldn't be too bad. Then you'd be able to see all your games without having to leave the main menu and go to a separate SD menu.

I'm sure they've got it sorted.

9 - i wonder
why can't they just make an external hard drive that works through those useless usb ports on the wii? Come on Big N your smarter than this. I have a wii and a ps3 3. Big n is making me upset. I/m not the only one. I could on and on but I won't.

" Come on Big N your smarter than this"

You are missing the point, if they just wanted that they used the SD Slot fully. HDD is no different from using the SD port to its full potential.

They are scared of piracy.

How could it be piracy? Please explain to me. I want to know why you came to that conclusion. If they are wanting to fully use the sd slot than why doesn't it support 16gb sd cards? They should have been smarter. Putting a system out that is coming out with channels upon channels and tons of downloadable games should have had more than 512mb of internal memory and an sd slot. They should have seen this problem coming.

My point isthat if they activate direct feed from a SD card Piracy will be a breeze.

Wii content is'nt that big and SD cards come really cheap.
Why do you need 16GB for if 60 games fit on a 2gb.

Wii is not a media hub like PS3 or 360, no reason to have a HDD of 320 GB.

Piracy s already a breeze though...

and the point about HD's over SD-cards in piracy is being able to load full ISO images from a big Hard_drive, where loading from an SD would be too expensive and hardware restricted to a certain mount, eg: 4 gigs.

if you read my comments, you can clearly read that i already said that.

But going Full SD, its just less clunky
