Americas Sales for the Week Ending August 30, 2008

Hardware sales were up slightly this week on the debuts of Tiger Woods, Tales of Vesperia, and Mario Baseball. The next few weeks should be quite interesting as the impacts of the Xbox 360 price cut become apparent.

After a quiet week in the shadow of the latest Madden, there were five new titles which sold over 40,000 units this week. EA, Nintendo, and Namco-Bandai led the charge, with a new Tiger Woods on multiple platforms, a Mario baseball game on Wii, and Tales of Vesperia for Xbox 360. With the new releases for the week, total hardware sales were up slightly from last week. DS saw the biggest increase for the week, as bundles were introduced to counteract the typical early fall decline in portable sales after the back to school rush. PSP, which had no such measure this week, saw the largest drop of all platforms. In the ongoing PS3 vs. Xbox 360 battle in the Americas, PS3 outsold its main rival another week, though it is important to remember that this is the last week unaffected by the Xbox 360 price drop. Next week, the Xbox 360 should see a slight boost (the price drop went into effect September 5th , VGC data will be through September 6th ) followed by a larger boost the following weeks. The larger boost should jettison Xbox 360 above PS3 once again as the price advantage widens.

For the record, I approved it more out of respect for free speech than belief in the statistics.

Also, I think VGC uses a rather flawed system for computing their sales charts, but a) they're a high profile site and their information is news worthy, even if only because it is bound to be the subject of debate and controversy and b) I don't think their numbers are intentional fraudulent, just incomplete.

N4G is not a forum for 'free speech'.

The fact that you and I and others are empowered to approve or disapprove stories emphasizes that there IS a want, by N4G, to have some controls on content so that it isn't flooded with SPAM and HIT TROLLS.

VG Chartz has done PLENTY over the last year to prove that it is a complete waste of bandwidth to click thru and as a MOD you should consider filtering this kind of crap post. The fact that 12 of your peers indicated fake/spam/lame BEFORE you approved it is worrisome imo.

No one is denying VGC an existence or their right to free speech...but N4G doesn't have to provide a free advertising platform either.

Yes, and I read their reports prior to approving the story, but they didn't convince me that it was not news-worthy. If I had just clicked "approve" on the topic without reading its contents or considering the reports, you would have reason to complain, but beyond that it is up to my judgment. (Or, at least, it is until an admin officially bans VGC or decides to can this article.)

First of all, VG Chartz is not overt spam. This article is not openly selling a product, and it does contain information.

What is questionable is the accuracy of that information. If this article were a flamboyantly transparent lie, then it could be flagged for inaccuracy, but this isn't the case.

What is questionable are VG Chartz methods, but, in my mind, that isn't enough to counter the fact that these numbers are, in fact, news. Actually, the fact that their information is so controversial makes it more news-worthy in my mind, because it invites debate and attention. Look how fast this thread jumped to "hot" status and how many comments there are debating VGC's legitimacy.

You are quiet right and I agree with you 100%.

I'm not suggesting that VGcahtz are the most accurate figures out there, but they usually show the trend accurately if not the exact numbers and are a useful discussion point for people who are genuinely interested in whats happening and not simply winning some silly sales argument. For a region like Europe, they are the only region wide figures available, and previous statements from the three manufacturers suggest that their figures are very close to accurate overall.

As long as a weekly figure is not accepted as being the gospel truth, the indications coming from the weekly data are interesting and certainly news worthy enough to be included here. They just can't be quoted as factual figures - but thats obvious and the articles always stress they are estimates. Some times their data set reflects reality better than other times. Its always interesting to me though.

Its how people interpret the figures used here thats the issue more than the figures themselves..

@kspraydad You are completely and utterly wrong. N4G is not about users censoring what gets posted here.If it meets the guidelines then it should be approved weather you like it or find it interesting or not. Its people like you who have hijacked the approval process on this site and turned every news item into a political statement. Your mindset is responsible making this site less than it should be.

Dont expect N4G to follow their own rules. Blog posts are not allowed but let some kid post a random blog about how bad the Wii sucks and they will let it be on the front page all day long. Rules are only observed when it goes against Sony. Anything else is ok though.

I don't know why VG Chartz started getting approved again, but I would rather wait for official numbers.

I guess VG Chartz should only be used for "amusement" from now on because I'll admit that I used to take the VG Chartz numbers too seriously but after they screwed up BIG time in July, it's obvious that nothing from VG Chartz should be approved again because everything is just estimates.

I guess VGC gave their estimate to the PS3 this week, but then prepped us for more inflated 360 numbers next week. Oh well, sales don't particularly matter anyways, but VGC has truly become comical now.

You want a translation for that comment?

"yeah the ps3 outsold the 360, but that's not gonna happen when the price drop comes! yay 360 is the roxorz!"

time goes by and they eat their own words or pretend they never said it at all.

But yeah i agree with you on about that site. All i ever hear is how wrong that site actually is. It's flipping hilarious to see xbots squirm about their blind hope.

well even by there numbers it shows that the ps3 has been going up over last year, while the 360 has been declining in numbers. Even if the numbers can be a bit off, they can still show a hint how things are going in the world of the console numbers. Microsoft needs to do something pretty good in order to get their numbers up.

8.1 - true.
I think they might just release another system and screw previous system owners once again. The only thing i think they're doing now is that mii-clone thing and their camera/song game ripoffs from the play station. It's like some weird generic off brand crap.

Whatever they do they need to be a little original, at least with their approach instead of a concept.

US SONY FANS are actually buying the system anyways, a system that still cost more when the 80 gig bc system came out. We don't make excuses we state facts.

So ps3 sales are.

40,000 higher per week in eu.

20,000 higher per week in usa.

60,000 per week if we take vg-chartz in all terrortries.

so that's 240,000 per month.

ok, i know alot of this is bs and guess work.

Either way, PS3 is outselling 360 enough now. and soon enough it'll be very close indeed and going into 09, well it's ps3 ftw.

No it does not matter to me, but annoys me when people seem to knock how well the ps3 is doing and how fast it will catch up and overtake the 360.

wii is a different matter, but how long will the wii keep selling, most people i know, don't even play the thing anymore. and are selling them on.

I noticed a pattern here. Most of the people complaining are Sony fans.. Why does it bother Sony fans so much? SOmetimes they show you winning sometimes they show you losing. MS fans dont cry every week they get shown in last place, but Sony fans just cant seem to handle anything that shows the PS3 as anything but the best. I'm sure they would have no problem at al lwith VGchartz if it just lied and always had PS3 in the lead.

12 - Accuracy
I've been following that site for sometime, their accuracy is tangent at best. I'll explain briefly:

Software: They are usually off by 5-20% sometimes 5% can seem huge when your talking about millions of copies sold, they do not update their archived data and the smaller the number of units sold the less accurate that number tends to be, again within the 5-20% range.

Hardware: They are usually off by .2-3%, I've been tracking that site for almost 2 years; I find it reliable enough to quote as long as it's within the same breath as "estimated".

For the record, NPD and Enterbrain and many others also make marginal errors and frequently correct them. As for their methods, they track sales to customers which is why they can't be directly compared to NPD's numbers. Figuring bandwidth or in english bought by retailers then bought by customers by using NPD's numbers and the Chartz.

Of course that would be an estimate but a fairly reliable one.

these VGchartz articles always get the sh!t-st!k from all sides of the fangirl battle, yet their articles and numbers always gets a top spot in the section who hates them most usually... lmao !!!
