Sorry to say it but this game looks pantaloons! Looks like a mindless button masher from this footage, will deffo be waiting for some reviews methinks.

3 - Meh
I get less and less impressed by this game everytime a new video comes around. I mean how can a stormtrooper take like five blows from a lightsaber?
It does look kinda fun though but I don't think it's a game that will keep me amused very long.
This game had such potential but now it only looks like a repetetive button-masher...

3.1 - " I mean how can a stormtrooper take like five blows from a lightsaber? "
I have to agree with that. It should cut him in half with the first blow.
Why can't games stay true to their origin?

Aren't games supposed to be fun? How fun would a game be with nothing but halved StormTroopers and *insert random Star Wars enemy here*? You'd prefer a game of 1 hit kills? 1 animation? 1 move?

It is like most fantasy like a character gets stabbed with a spear and lost 100hp instead of bleeding slowly to death.

It is just a game we don't want anything too real.

Hellz yeah!

I'd much rather have 100 of them come at me and fill the area with their split-in-two bodies than to "knock" down one guy with 5 blows, only to have him get up again. Call the game something else then. Don't call it Star Wars-anything.

this game would be a lot better if you could lop off some limbs. Storm troopers should fall with one hit of the lightsaber and should only be fillers here and there, they shouldnt be the main combatants in the game.

This guys should take on thousands of stormtroopers at a time ala heavenly sword.

It also looks like the apprentice can get shot a ton of times which makes no sense. It seems like the game is balanced weird. I dunno, with all the games coming out this fall this is a definite rental.

But seriously? stormtroopers are pawns, they should be cut in half.

3.6 - Humph...
Because having 100 Storm Troopers, rebels, and droids firing lasers at me, from a distance, while I have to press the block button in time to counter each shot in addition to battling another Jedi, who could kill me in one successful attack, sounds like a load of fun.

I dont know what you guys are complaining about. Force unleashed has always been billed as a god of war/ninja gaiden type action game with amped up force powers and an amazing physics engine. Thats exactly what I see in those videos. If you want to call it a "mindless button masher" without even knowing anything about the combo system or the controls, thats your opinion, but this game has always been billed as a third person action game, so I dont know what you were expecting. It looks great to me.

6.1 - hmm...
... and add Heavenly Sword to that list too.

This video looks realy cool (to me), but I have to agree... the combo system looks somewhat repetitive. At least IGN has some decent players though; I did see a lot of different moves showcased throughout these four videos.

But I'd be happy as long as this game doesn't downright suck in the end. Most Starwars games have sucked really hard except X-Wing/Tie Fighter and KotOR.

9 - The gameplay is a mixed bag...
Force powers are awesome though there is some danger that sending every object in the level flying might get repretitive, but I don't like the looks of the lightsaber attacks, it annoys me every time I see a ST take a direct blow and not get cut in half... but what will make or break this game is story. If the story is as Epic as its source material then it will be awesome, if not, then it wont be worth playing.

I know what you mean, but still, its a star wars game, so they're not going to make it into a gore fest with blood and body parts flying everywhere. Lucas (smartly) never allows anything more than teen rated stuff to be used in star wars products.

I feel like they could have achieved gameplay more faithful to the source material and still received a Teen rating. Both Lightsabers and Blasters instantly cauderize the wound so no need for blood, but it seems silly for random ST to be able to take repeated strikes from a lightsaber. I know its knit-picking but it bugs me I feel like Lightsaber gameplay was neglected in favor of Force Powers which basically make lightsaber combat useless, which jsut doesnt seem right... but like I siad I've got my fingers crossed for epic story.

I'm not impressed with the gameplay in The Force Unleashed a lot... I think that there needs to me more melee attacks or a lot of cool combos with the Light Saber or something.

While watching these videos, I just thought of something... the gameplay in this game reminds me of Infamous somewhat because of the use of electrical powers and picking up objects with powers and whatnot... but the major difference between the gameplay to me is that Infamous is Open World while The Force Unleashed isn't... but so far I've been more impressed with Infamous and Open World games are almost always fun.

And when the guy was fighting that big robot, it did make me think of Too Human too.

Looks ok to me. Hope they get it varied enough though, have to agree with you there. I really want a game of this sort, but i`ll wait for some reviews and opinions from this site before i make up my mind about it. So many good games coming out that i can`t buy them all (damn life`s unfair hehe).

I`m glad Infamous isn`t out before next year, we need some good game then too ;)

Well, isn't it to be obvious that StarWar:FU is a button smasher action game with all the footage we saw before this game play video.

and of course, combine sword attack and force move should dish out some kcik-ass movement. Plus there is finishing move to bigger enemy and boss I assume, what's not to like?

I mean when you hit the stormtroopers there is a second long dramatic pause. Game looks pretty boring. Anyway, don't lightsabers cut through stuff? From the looks of the video the light saber is just punching the stormtroopers.

21 - you know,
a part of me wishes the word "repetitive" wasn't in the vocabulary of most of the gaming populous.

i mean, games by their very NATURE are repetitive!

and not just video games either:

Basketball: the teams run back and forth down the court over and over and over and over again trying to score points until the time runs out.

Football: the teams throw a football in an attempt to get it into a goal on the other end over and over and over again.

even in games like Clue, Monopoly, Tetris, Life, etc, the gameplay mechanics and rules are the same.

what MATTERS is if those gameplay mechanics are enjoyable to begin with.

first example being God of War. it's combo combat. all you do in this game for the most part is kill wave after wave of enemies.

another example: Ninja Gaiden. it's combo combat with an extreme difficulty level. all you do is kill wave after wave of enemies.

Devil May Cry: ditto.

Heavenly Sword: ditto.

Halo: first person shooter. you kill wave after wave of enemies from the first person perspective.

Resistance: ditto.

does this stop any of those games from being FUN? no.

here's my thoughts on what make a game fun, and what we connect to as gamers with what we consider a "fun" game:

1) controls: without tight controls, the game would be unplayable. destroying fun (see: Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness for an example of SH*TTY controls that ruined what could have been a great game).

2) visuals: don't always have to be groundbreaking, or the best in the industry, but art design goes a long way. examples of games with excellent art design: Bioshock, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, Team Fortress. all very different games. all arguably showcasing some of the best graphics in the industry in terms of art design.

3) sound: simple, the sound should match the game. end of story. i'm not a real nitpicker for sound, but i know when the audio enhanced the mood of a game (see; Silent Hill series for excellent use of audio, MGS4 is another).

4) game design: this is a take on the "gameplay" category, but gameplay is a bit broad and vaguely used these days. a game with quality game design, and featuring the above qualities will probably be a pass. there's also individual team's talent. for example, i don't know if Insomniac could make an MGS4, or Kojima Productions could make a Super Mario Brothers, but there's no denying that they are two of the best development houses in the industry.

why is it that we forgive certain games for having some things, but condemn another for having those EXACT SAME ELEMENTS? (see; the recent brouhaha over Killzone 2 and other new FPS titles seemingly borrowing gameplay elements from Call of Duty 4)

the answer is the above four elements i listed.

why is it that having an over the shoulder camera in Gears of War is considered "new and fresh," even though Resident Evil 4 implemented it first, but when Uncharted uses the same elements, it's "ripping off Gears of War?"

why is it that God of War, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry can have the same, "enter a room; doors close/get sealed off; enemies appear; kill enemies; unlock door; proceed; rinse repeat" formula, but Heavenly Sword gets nitpicked for following that same tradition?

ALL GAMES ARE REPETITIVE.

what matters is what developers do with those repetitive elements to make them fun.

The Force Unleashed is looking like every other combo bases action/adventure title, and as long as taking out enemies is genuinely as fun as it seems in this video, who gives a flying fizzle if it's "repetitive."

yeah, play through Gears of War, Resistance, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Devil May Cry, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, and try to tell me those games aren't repetitive either.

in Gears, the primary gameplay mechanic is still shooting hordes of enemies while stop and popping out of cover.

in Resistance, the primary gameplay is still point a gun at enemies and killing them.

in MGS4, the primary gameplay is still sneaking around avoiding combat, or stealthily executing your enemies.

in Legend of Zelda, the primary gameplay is still wandering from dungeon to dungeon, collecting keys and fighting foes.

etc, etc.

does that stop ANY of those games from being a god damn good time? hell NO!

controls. visuals. audio. game design. if those core elements click, you will have a great time with a game more times than not, even if you ARE doing the same thing over and over again.

this constant complaint about "repetition" is quite ridiculous, ESPECIALLY when referring to video games.

21.2 - great post figboy
I fail to see how anything in your post is disagreeable.

As to the people complaining about a lightsaber not killing a stormtrooper in a single hit, so do you play all your games on don't hurt me setting.

Yes fine a lightsaber can go through armor, flesh and durasteel like a hot knife through butter.

As for the waves of troopers how do you think they killed the jedi masters during order 66, so if the sabers are realistic why not blaster fire, explosions hence dead in one or 2 shots.

So i don't want star war the force unleashed to feel like cod4 or rainbow 6 realism, yes fine they could have made a stormtrooper randomly lose s limb at death. Which would have been nice it still looks like a kickass game regardless, this and mercs 2 will have me oocupied for some time.

As far as the lightsabers cutting the Stormtroopers in half or whatever, you can't beat the various saber mods for the PC Jedi Knight titles. It wasn't uber realistic, i.e. that every swing cut off a part, but it was rewarding when you got a great swing in and an arm or hand went flying.

As far as TFU goes, not much to complain about. I will know more after the demo hits. But just going by the videos, I'm not a big fan of the life bar over the characters' heads. I hope you can turn that off.

Also, a while back I got my nephew a few of TFU Star Wars figures and in one of the cases was some code for the game called "Super Saber." Going by the details it might be possible that this code would allow some sort of lightsaber dismemberment.

25 - really looking forward to this game
I must say I loved the Jedi Knight series and the epic lightsaber battles. And this game reminds me of those times. But I must say that a few chopped off limbs would give this game the little extra. Even the old Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast had limbs being cut off. Would love to see it in this game as well.

Yeah, I sort of agree about the camera. The fighting did surprise me, I thought it'd be different, Either way I'm getting this game. The combat doesn't look bad at all, just not how I expected. But Euphoria and DMM will make this game awesome. Hopefully it has some sort of Multi-player or challenge mode to make it have a lasting appeal.
