Miyamoto: "Designers Should Be Looking at Humans"

Legendary game creator Shigeru Miyamoto has some advice for game designers: Look around.

Miyamoto said that today's game designers shouldn't get strung-up by technology, graphics and polygon counts. Instead, Miyamoto believes that designers "should be looking at humans" for inspiration.

Miyamoto elaborated on that idea: "As game designers, the trend is often for concentrating on pushing graphics, or other capabilities, or network features in new games…But I like to think that game designers would be better off trying to think about things such as health or mental improvement, rather than technology itself."

Great, can't wait for the Wii Back Massager, the Wii Sugar and Cholesterol Tester, and the Wii Dental Cleaner.

Seriously though, the more he talks the less it seems likely that he will give fans what they want. Nintendo might have to put a B team on those sequels.

See, when he says humans what region is he looking at? The fit Japanese market, the tubby American Kids, or the not really playing games European kids?

And lets not forget every human is fairly shallow and just looking for something sparkle, sparkle.

so there you have it. Nintendo are moving away from their core audience and they don't intend to change that... more braintraning and balance board stuff to come and don't expect them to push the graphics. great for hardware sales, but ultimately very bad for third party support. it's not going to be long now before this Wii fashion is dumped in the wardrobe alongside grandads bell-bottoms.

I don't know about improving yourself, but my theory about gaming is it's supposed to help you grip you psychologically, make you wanting to play the game, whether it be great graphics, or great gameplay. Unfortunately this generation you will have to pick one or the other, hopefully next gen we can have both.

I've never understood the idea that Good Graphics = Bad Gameplay.
To me, it's absolutely false

My PS3 has given me some of the best gaming ever. Not because of graphics, not because of gameplay, but because of a great combination of the two. The improvements across all elements of a game are much appreciated

My Wii is a good console, but I feel it's yet to reach it's potential, with the best games not making much use of the Wiimote... However, they've been enjoyable

I don't know, but try out metroid prime 3. That game just feels good as a hardcore game...try the shooter controls. They feel amazing to me. Now that wii motion plus is out maybe within 6-9 months we'll see some amazing titles. I'm not saying that the ps3/360 have horrible controls, but with some games I believe that the controls can be way better and more intuitive with the wiimote..

I dont know why you guys are hating on him.He uses experiences from his real life, then those experiences are used to develope new games. This has been his trend since he made donkey kong, mario, and zelda.

Just because wiifit and music came out doesnt mean nintendo is gonna make just those kind of games........besides wiifit and wiimusic what casual games for wii has nintendo made?(dont say wiisports that is a free game, and dont say wiiplay thats a free controller).

Big Brain Academy :P

The argument is with all the focus on the casual gamer, the core gamer suffers. This can be compared to the movie industry. How many movies a year do we see that are on caliber with The Godfather, Gone With the Wind, or Heat as compared to Superbabies, College Road Trip, Daddy Day Camp, Cats & Dogs, or 21?

There's a LOT of garbage now since people "just want entertainment."

I'd say the problem is that he's not actually telling designers to use the kind of approach he took to make those games that made Nintendo what it is. He's telling them to look at the gamers themselves and try to improve them: he wants more games like Brain Age and Wii Fit.

But after E3, I don't think many developers will be taking him seriously, especially not those who still believe gaming to be a form of escapism - for whom things like good graphics will be a real consideration. Sure, gaming can be a force for positive change in the player, but I certainly wouldn't make it a priority for all games or even most games as Miyamoto seems to want. Just entertainment is enough.

I don't see why Wii only owners don't think we can have both graphics AND gameplay. A lot of Wii only owners (i used to be one) still hold Ocarina of Time as the greatest game of all time. That game had amazing gameplay, and the best graphics available at the time. the tech behind the game only enhanced the gameplay, it can never hold it back.

So when I see games like Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and SSBB, all of which have great graphics and amazing gameplay, I love them. Then I see games like MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, and Bioshock that have just as good/better gameplay and better tech to further enhance the gameplay, I can't help but like them a little more, or at least just as much.

the best games have a unison of amazing core gameplay and great tech for the time pushing that gameplay to its limits.

12.1 - Gameplay innovating is risky
Usually games which are expensive to make, rely on tried-and-true gameplay formula. If innovation on the gameplay department doesn't succeed, and the game bombs salewise, it's a tough situation for a game company. Lair is a good example.

Low budget game makers can afford the risky way of innovating on gameplay mechanics. One good example is Zack & Wiki.

@ the artguy

"There's a LOT of garbage now since people "just want entertainment."

thats the way its always been..........thats why movies such as Memento,Gattaca, and even THX 1138 do horrible in the box office.Their ideas are so deep and creative it only touches a small amount of people
Just as say Killer 7 or No More Heroes did horrible for Suda 51.

the bigger the market the more money you make.Im just worried that in this day and age creative people(who make games or movies) get scared and take new routes when their ideas dont make them as much money as someone who makes a Disney film.

Look at the creater of Memento,Christopher Nolan, went from making a truly creative movie to making what...yea you guessed it..Batman.What a switch.

15 - despite the lameness of the comment...
you got to admit that ps3 fanbois are only obviously interested in graphics (seeing as the next games they are looking forward to are FPS so you can't even say that variety is in their agenda). So as much as I hate miyamoto for sucking at his new position as emperor of Japan, he should go back and design vg that people who are willing to shell out money wanna play, not only people willing to shell out money for a system.

And so 360 fanboys absolute only care about gameplay right?

Let's all conveniently forget the hundreds and hundreds of "Gears of War looks better than..." articles then.

Both sides of the fence do it. So stop acting as if Sony fans are the only ones guilty of it.

And I won't even start with Nintendo. WiiMusic!? Seriously...

15.2 - yeah but the fanboys for 360...
may be as annoying as any other fanboy, but at least with this site, I have to give it to ps3 fanboys as being the most overwhelmingly annoying bunch. I am a Nintendo fanboy, and admit to its lack of productivity and won't get offended when people say something true about the company... for instance the lack of ingenuity in them-wow who doesn't know about that. I am not saying 360 fans (or x-bots as the cool kids like to call them) don't do the same, but ps3 fanbois are right up there with politicians in there nonsensical overview of the gaming world. See Sony is awesome with its graphical stand point, and it is doing great strides in attempts to do great, and I suppose the same can be said for M$ (see the cool kids do that too), but their fans are just the worse. Nintendo fans can be up there (I can't name them but I am sure that I have been in the lot once or twice) but I pick on sony fanbois because personally, on this site alone they are the biggest douches out there.

15.3 - all fanboys regardless of console just as bad as the rest
Having said that nintendo's need to find something worthwhile to brag about, because games on the wii ain't it. And since we are being fanboys here, when the wii decides to have a respectable online system and a practical storage solution it will be acknowledged as a next gen and not merely a gc 1.5 with a new control scheme

Ps3 fanboys only looking forward to fps, btw if your going to stereotype get it right 360 owners are fps/tps only crowd.

Lol nope drone this fanboy is looking forward to mercs 2, motorstorm 2(pacific rim), rfom2, lego batman, star wars tfu, little big planet, bioshock, ff13, ff versus 13, white knight story, eternal sonata, fallout 3, killzone 2, god of war 3, rac quest for booty, bionic commando rearmed.

I know it is hard for some nintendo fans to understand but some people find shooters enjoyable, like people find other types of games enjoyable.

Now the ps3 fanboys(not fanbois) are only interested in graphics, okay this is just a stupidass statement, which gives a large clue as to how much respect ps3 gamers, should show you. Despite a few exclusive on either side here and there, ps3 and 360 games are the basically the same, so your also attacking 360 owners in that statement.

Look at 9.2-9.3 for some gamers discussing graphics vs gameplay, because yours is just sad.

Its all about the graphics, uh no there is alot more than merely graphics, there is the physics of the game look up star wars the force unleashed. Artificial intelligence is another important feature having the game adapt to what your doing and forces you to reevaluate your actions/strategy.

In uncharted probably the best looking ps3 game out at the moment, one of the thing i enjoy more than the graphics(woah the mountain looks great). Was the quality of the voice acting and the animation of the characters and how it brought the characters to life, they felt real to me, and not some soulless android, or generic main character.

Mgs4 is another top notch game that had superb sound as well as great animation, has a very interesting and twisting story, and despite access to many types of lethal weapons. The game rewards you more for being stealthy and not killing anyone, rather than going guns blazing and killing every enemy in sight.

Let me clear this up for some people that don't understand this, when you have a hdtv and regularly view hd content you get accustomed to having that level of detail. Then when you watch a non upscaled standard definition content, it usually looks like crap due to the lack of detail, it all depends though.
