Divnich Tapes: Xbox 360 Price Cut Should Take It Ahead Of PS3 In July

Interesting article that debates how much the price cut will be in play for sales in July.

Analyst Jesse Divnich gives his opinion on whether the Xbox 360 price cut will only be a short-term or long-term success story for Microsoft.

The article also talks about Nintendo's dominating role in the portable and handheld markets.

if the price cut does little damage that wouldnt be to good for the 360, but i bet it will sell a bunch of consoles just like a price cut should.

Isn't the $299.99 "price drop" just a firesale anyway? To clear out space for the new 60gb models.

3.1 - I wouldn't call it a fire sale but yeah...
It is a clearance sale for the 20gb models. After that, the price will return to what it was prior to the clearance.

7 - Current Amazon.com Stats
Best sellers in video games.
8. 40gig PS3 - $399
34. 20gig X-Box 360 - $299
(they update hourly, so it might change if you see my comment later)

In all fairness, it was trailing right below the 40gig for the first couple days of the sale, way up from where it normally is. It should also be said that Amazon.com is in no way the general stat holder of all retail, but I do believe it's the biggest retailer on the internet.

8 - Too little...
...

They are only having a price-cut for the 20GB version, and I'm sure it sells...

...but personally, I just want the Elite, which is still 370 euro and doesnt come with ANY games or built-in WiFi... :( , so that's still too expensive as far as I'm concerned.

End of august, I'll be getting a 80 GB PS3, hopefully a nice bundle, with built-in wireless.

9 - Oh no!
Now PS3 will only DESTROY 360 in 2 out of 3 possible world markets.

That's if the firesale (not price cut) has a huge effect on VERY LOW 360 sales (down week over week from May).

5 mil gap from 10 mil a year and a half ago, and closing FASTER than ever before.

I think their should be a short spike in US sales for the 360. The cut isn't much, but if you want it you need to get it straight away before supplies of the old model disappear, so the spike should only be for about 6 weeks.

I personally believe their should have been a permanent cut in prices to reverse the trend of the Ps3 outselling the 360 in the states. I think we can all agree that Japan and Europe are pretty much Sony territory, so its important for the 360 to maintain its big lead in the US and not continue to see that whittled away. I really expected a permanent price cut in the Us to match the price cut they had in Europe a few months ago. With a 80 gig model of the PS3 about to retail for $399, it could look to be better value for punters who are 'on the fence' about which next gen machine to buy.

Still, the boys at MS surely know what they are doing far better than me, and the spike produced by selling off the old model will no doubt give some figures for their PR guru's to launch a new round of spin! :)

Let the games begin!
